8 on Penguin at Melkbosstrand has become my yearly retreat from the hustle and bustle of Johannesburg. It never disappoints, and it is central and close to areas worth exploring. It has an amazing sea view from the apartment to enjoy a drink and is extremely close to the beach.
Very nice stay, close to the sea, close to the shops. Maybe there should be milk in the fridge next time. Some people only stay for one night and don't pack everything, because they think the place will already have what they need, e.g. milk, coffee.
My partner and I enjoyed the stay to the fullest and definitely recommend it to others as well.

The stay was very nice, however we had a problem with the WiFi connection. It kept on going off, and the toilet had an issue where the water kept on coming up when flushed.
We stayed there 2 consecutive weekends. Although we arranged for an early check-in for the first weekend, the key was not available. The garage is not very spacious, and my double cab pickup would not fit. Luckily we were there with my wife's car. Hand arrangements will be quite handy on stairs, because the stairs get wet when it rains.

For sure value for money. The apartment has everything you need and a lot of space, so if there is a rainy day, you can just hang out there. Have a good barbecue inside. The sea is within walking distance of the apartment, but it is more pleasant to drive to the beach's picnic area. The windows of the apartment also open wide, so you know for sure that you are by the sea. And our hostess was very helpful with anything on WhatsApp and also recommended us places to eat. Michelle was very hospitable. The unit was neat, clean and well equipped. The view was breathtaking and the beach was really close. I could hear the roar of the sea every night. We were lucky with good weather and could go jogging and walking on the beach in the morning and evening. It's very private and if you're looking for a break from the city noise and just want some peace and quiet, this is the place for you. The unit was within walking distance of the main beach with several restaurants, but be warned, it's a bit of a walk, especially if you're not used to walking far. Most restaurants are full on weekends and must be booked with Dineplan, but fortunately not all. Quite a variety of eateries to choose from depending on the "vibe" you're after. The shopping centers are small, but provide the essentials, at least there was also a Woollies. I will visit 8 on Penguin in Melkbos again, my type escapes the hustle and bustle of the city and the area is not so commercial.
Even though there is not really an outdoor play area for the children, the nice lot of space in the apartment makes up for it. Very peaceful and just what you need. Incredible view and nice close to the beach. We really enjoyed it and will definitely go back.

We needed accommodation to attend the Imagine Dragons show. After hours in traffic after the show, we arrive at the apartment in the morning hours. Load shedding caused us to be unable to open the garage door to access the apartment. We felt very bad about having to call the owners awake in the morning hours for help. Yet they still kindly helped us open the door from the inside. Many thanks for a nice and clean place to stay and their helpfulness.

It was really nice, but unfortunately it was only for one night.
We had a wonderful stay - family with 2 children. Children had fun swimming. If I have to find fault - we love animals so the dogs didn't bother us, but the dogs' mess was on the grass when we sat there, quite a few that hadn't been picked up.

The apartment is huge. Lots of space, equipment, etc. But needing a makeover. Needs to get rid of the rust, cracks, and fittings that need painting. This would suit someone needing lots of space and classiness is not a requirement.

8 On Penguin is the perfect apartment for a small family of four, lovely braai area, living room, large rooms and secure parking means you can slip away from the city's hustle and bustle and enjoy the tranquility with a beautiful view, without stepping on each other's toes or having to worry about safety. It's a lovely apartment that was heated when we arrived (it was a cold day when we arrived), which is a very special extra that makes you feel welcome at your destination. This accommodation offers a comfortable break for 4 people who are looking for the peaceful part of the Cape. Yet you are close to many attractions such as Darling and Paternoster. The unit is very neat and well equipped. The indoor grill is of course a bonus against the Cape winds.

As a party of 2 we stayed comfortably for 7 nights, nice view of Table Mountain and the sea and the enclosed porch with indoor braai was a winner with the South East blowing. The owners were friendly and helpful. Would stay here again anytime.
Everything was very convenient. We rested well. Little things like a microwave lid and broom short. The website says there is DStv, but there is NETFLIX. These things didn't bother us, but could be fixed.

There was no instruction on how to use the TV and TV box. On my arrival the previous guest's footprint was visible in the flat. I travel a lot, due to Covid I would expect a deep clean is mandatory and handwashing soap in the bathroom will be something to add.
Great place to stay however, the Netflix kept on loosing connection.
We booked 4 places through the website in October and can therefore compare well. The communication with the landlord was difficult. The day of our arrival I could not reach her at all. This is not acceptable. The description on the website is wrong and it's not just something small. There is no free WiFi. We had to do work and counted on it. There is also no DStv. The second bedroom has actually been converted into a bedroom that closes on one side with a sliding curtain. There is not really the view to Table Mountain as the advertisement says. I have pictures from a digital camera facing the sea to confirm this. The apartment is spacious and safe. But the musty smell coming from the one fridge made the stay unpleasant. To give this apartment a high rating, as many reviews do, is unfair to owners who have made their accommodations really neat and well equipped, like the other three places we've stayed in the past month. Sorry about the negative comments, but this is how we experienced the stay and will tell others about it.

I wasn't there often, just slept there. The two apartments are right next to each other so if the people moved around, early and late, you could hear everything. I'm a very light sleeper so it's understandable.
