We had a great stay at Alkantsee. We were very disappointed when we got there and found out that the braai area was not available for us (this was one of the main reasons why we decided on the self-catering unit). Fortunately, the hostess gave us a Weber to use in the driveway, so we could grill our meat. Not ideal - but grateful nonetheless. We should also mention that the shower's water pressure is not fantastic. Apart from the barbecue and the shower, our visit was very nice. We were warmly welcomed and the hostess went out of her way to make our time in Struisbaai comfortable.

Alkantsee is truly one of the most beautiful places I have ever slept. On arrival I was warmly welcomed by Beatrix. The unit is spotless with the most beautiful view from the porch and bedroom on both sides. Beatrix made sure I had extra blankets and recommended a way to the lighthouse and also warned me about the dirt road to Arniston. I will definitely return to Struisbaai and book this place again.

The name Alkantsee is very appropriate, as one can really see all around the sea. It is walking distance from a path along which one can walk along the sea. The swimming beach is approximately 4/5 minutes drive by car from the accommodation.

"Not what we expected VS the website advert."

Arrived 19:30, Friday 26 March and was welcomed warmly by the host, Beatrix. Immediately requested to keep doors and windows closed due to insects. We were granted permission to bring our small dog along. Beatrix departed to her house which is attached to the "self-catering accommodation". This is not communicated in the advert. I did a sweep of all rooms/areas and removed a total of 7 baby scorpions. Not an ideal situation for my wife, pet or myself as "Where is mom scorpion?" and "How safe is it?" was at the top of our minds. The accommodation is advertised as a 5 sleeper which creates the impression of space VS what we encountered which was the total opposite in that the accommodation is tight and lacks privacy. As you enter the apartment you are in the main bedroom, no privacy. From there you enter a small open-plan lounge/sitting/kitchen area comprising of 2 couches which double up as the additional 2 beds accommodating the extra 3 people. Again what privacy? It is a thoroughfare from entrance to back door. Next is a small dining table positioned between the sitting area, larger couch and kitchen, it is cramped. Directly off the kitchen is a small shower, hand basin and toilet, but who wants to be in the ablution adjacent to a kitchen? Saturday morning I advised Beatrix that we were leaving and the response was that she would contact die website to find out what she should do. Beatrix made no attempt to contact die website from Saturday when we departed and Tuesday mid-morning when I contacted them, the agent who that Beatrix had made no attempt to contact her even though the website is available 24/7. How pure were the intentions even though I made a point of saying "Beatrix, I have paid in full, however you look like an honest person and will do the right thing. I leave it in your hands." Let me just leave it at that as at no time did I insult her or her accommodation which is more suited to a overnighter looking for somewhere to bed down VS spending a week in lovely Struisbaai. We prefer our privacy and were under the impression that is what we were booking. I made a follow up call to the agent on Thursday whilst returning to Cape Town to be told that "Beatrix contacted me to say that she could not find other people to take the nights". Outcome: Beatrix failed to contact the website as she said she would. I am out of pocket whereas the website could quite possibly have been able to do the job that they are contracted to do. The Alkantsee experience is an unpleasant one, especially after the great holiday in Elandsbaai booked via the website.

It was truly lovely to arrive from Cape Town and be greeted by Beatrix with a friendly smile and have our accommodation sparkling clean and fresh. Beatrix and her hubby were the perfect hosts! Always on standby should we need anything, ready to assist and very approachable. The consistently had our best interests at heart. I loved the airiness of our little flat. We were 3 adults and there was more than enough space to sleep, relax, and just hang out. We had everything that we needed for our stay, including coffee, tea and sugar, toilet paper, plenty of fresh clean towels which is always a 10 on my checklist, because I always forget to pack it in. The bathroom has enough space for your ablutions and all three of us are on the large side. There was no difficulty in terms of space in the shower - lovely hot water throughout. The location of Alkantsee is perfect, close to the ocean side, the small seaside town of Struisbaai and L'Agulhas. We had the opportunity to spend some time with our hosts and they are two truly beautiful people. We would like to thank Beatrox and her hubby for being great hosts and awesome human beings!
