We had originally booked the Lavender Room but on arrival were offered an optional upgrade to the more expensive Karoo room at no extra cost, which we chose after examining both rooms. We had selected the venue as an economical no-frills overnight accommodation, and it met that expectation except for the very fancy shower, which was something of a disaster and needs attention (the different settings did not work, and the water half-dribbled out). We only discovered that in preparation for an early morning departure and so were unable to report it.

The bathroom door didn't close properly. Cooking facilities were limited to a microwave oven. We appreciated the wide veranda in the hot weather. The road to the venue is in poor condition. The place is difficult to find as the streets are not marked.

Was really comfortable, I would only recommend gas heaters for the rooms. It's terribly cold and the panel heaters don't really help.
Anker guest house is more of an overnight stay than a guest house. The facilities are clean but basic. The owners were very helpful in helping us cook (I didn't realize there were no cooking facilities, which is odd as plates and cutlery are provided). There are some basic items missing, such as soap in the bathrooms and maybe newer towels. A small table in the house will be useful to eat at.
Was comfortable. They brought an extra fan for my mom. Owners were friendly. Relax by the pool. Remember to put toilet paper in the bathroom. Thank you.

Lovely quaint place. Host was very friendly. The rooms need a bit of attention, paint is peeling in the bathrooms. Dustbins were not cleared before our arrival so we had previous guests rubbish. The towels did not smell clean. Otherwise it is a lovely place especially for the rate you pay.
It has been a very nice halfway stop for us between Robertson and Tzaneen. The most beautiful was the dirt road from Gariep van Philippolis between all the farms - was very beautiful! The place is perfect for an overnight option, but has all the amenities you need for a longer stay. The pool was a winner with the kids who had to sit in the car for so long.
We regret that we only spent one night there. It was a wonderful experience. Friendly people and beautiful place.

I was travelling with an 8 week old puppy and where really welcomed and our stay was very comfortable. Really loved the iced cold Karoo Ale they serve after a long trip. Clean and wonderfully set out. All that one needs to enjoy a stay exploring or passing by on route to the deeper Karoo or Cape Town. We basically wanted overnight accommodation, a bed with clean and warm bedding and basic amenities. Plus secure parking. Nothing fancy. We got what we hoped for and what we paid for.

The stay at Anker was very pleasant and peaceful and the hostess, Elaine, went out of her way to make our stay a memorable one in clean, nicely decorated rooms. We almost didn't want to leave when it was time. Would like to stay a little longer next time. The restaurants that Elain booked for us served a nice plate of food with friendly hospitality that you don't find everywhere.

I was very impressed that when I got there we were immediately informed that we had to make reservations for dinner and the owner made the reservations himself, which made it very easy since it was my first time there. If you do not know about the advance reservation at certain places, you will be without food that evening, because the villages are small.
We stayed at Anker Guesthouse as a halfway stop between Cape Town and the Drakensberge. The rooms were well-equipped, clean and neat. It was very cold at night but we had a good night's rest.
The Anker was ideal for what we needed, all that was a bit bad was that the toilet was detached from the floor, and that we couldn't close the windows properly in the children's room, so for safety we have them with us let sleep Furthermore, the bed was nice and soft and clean, and we could park the car inside which was great.
There were just too many little things that weren't right, e.g. the sink faucet in the bathroom was completely loose, the fan in the room won't turn off and other obvious little things that aren't right. With all these little problems out of the way, the stay there can be very pleasant.
The rooms and house needed maintenance. A coat of paint is also needed. Bedding is not up to standard.

The Anker Guesthouse provided a welcome "pitstop" and was a welcome respite during a long trip. From the outside it does not look like much, but once inside we were quite surprised by the decor, neatness and all the basics in the kitchenette. The only facility not available was a TV, but this was not a negative as the whole purpose was to have a place to freshen up and sleep.

We would recommend Anker Guest House to anyone looking for accommodation in Philippolis. It is definitely value for money. The dinner arranged for us at one of the local eateries was an experience and a half. The company of the lady who runs the place was informative and very interesting.

From arrival to departure was great. Safety was so different from what we are used to. Elaine dropped by and brought more blankets without us asking. The guest house was clean and tidy with a nice spacious room opening onto the veranda. Elaine is a warm and friendly person and made us feel right at home. She recommended a local restaurant and we thoroughly enjoyed the food and company there. We were fortunate to have the local "band" there who spoiled us with their musical talent. We felt as if we had been living in the town for years.

The two beds in the single bedroom have electric blankets, but the switches are not easily accessible. The two bedside lights did not work. There were only 2 towels for 3 people. The owner is building on it so it looks a bit messy, but we slept well.

Anker Gastehuis is tidy and very good value for money. It's nicely laid out and the beds were very comfortable. It's one of the few times I've had a peaceful night's rest at an overnight facility.
Philipolis surprised us with its charm, full of interesting history and with much more to see and do in the area than we had expected! It was a unique experience, which we were able to fully enjoy, mostly because of the owners of the Anker guesthouse who made themselves available for our any need, and who took us around to see/be able to appreciate the whole area at no extra charge!! The accommodation was lovely and perfectly suited to our needs as a family with children. Thank you so much!
The road to Pilippolis is not very good, but the place to stay is very neat and the owner is very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend the place.

We stayed there when it was very hot - 35 degrees plus. Owners are very friendly and did a great braai for us which we loved. However, the room was very hot and could do with some air conditioning. We cooled off in the reservoir, though think a proper swimming pool would be a great added feature!
