116 guests' feedbackYes had a very nice stay. In the forest, among all the trees.
Fantastic stay. The host popped in to check if everything was running smoothly as soon as he saw smoke coming from the kol kol chimney, which we highly appreciated. The hot tub was warm on arrival. Friendliest pets that follow the host around and keep the area safe. Distance between cottages is perfect for outdoor shower area and hot tub privacy. I would visit over and over again, calm and quiet surroundings perfect for a relaxing getaway.
Great stay! Can't wait to go again!
Ewald showed us to our house on the farm. He gave us complimentary coffee and biscuits on arrival. He explained a few things regarding the area and the facilities, and then we were left in private to do as we pleased. It was a wonderful experience to break away from the busy city life and rush we face every day. I would recommend anyone to have a break away like this.
It was really a good experience. Very peaceful location.
The stay was lovely and had an amazing hot tub with awesome views. The accommodation had not informed us that the road to the destination was flooded, so the drive took a bit longer as we had to find an alternative route. The place itself was quite cold and a slight wind came filtering through the door. The geyser also seemed faulty as there was no hot water available from the second day. The braai grid was also quite burnt and not very usable. I thoroughly enjoyed the amenities, and there was ample firewood for a cold weekend in winter.
Lovely stay but rustic. Better bedding, linen and towels would go a long way to improving the stay.
Amazing, the hot tub was fired up and heated when we arrived. Great place and beautiful surroundings. Would highly recommend it.
Excellent and private. Amazing.
Was awesome, loved the remoteness and the host was awesome.
It was very nice. We enjoyed it very much.
We stayed at the accommodation for 5 nights. It is located in a very nice place. You can enjoy the sunset every night from the hot tub. The place is neat and clean, and has everything you need. It is also very safe. The only two things I can complain about are that there were an awful lot of flies (for sure the time of year) and that they might install blinds. In the room at the back, the sun shines directly on the bed in the morning (for the late sleepers) and also on the hot tub. With the afternoon sun it gets very hot in there and shines straight in. Other than that, we really enjoyed our time and it was really a quiet, peaceful break away from it all. Will definitely visit again.
Avani is located in a beautiful region with wonderful views and mountains. Hermanus, wine estates and the Elgin Valley are just around the corner. The kol-kol was also wonderfully warm in the cooler evenings. Unfortunately we had to return home early due to an emergency issue. All improvements I can suggest is a bit of refurbishing regarding one of the water pipes.
My husband and I had a great experience at Avani Lodge.
Peaceful, quiet and beautiful. Just what you need for some time out. Watch the sunset over the mountains and stargaze at night is magnificent. The jacuzzi was hot on arrival with wood stacked for it and the fireplace. The place was neat and clean. I would highly recommend it for future visitors. A load shedding schedule would be nice if it was made available. Flies are abundant and off-putting.
We had a very nice stay. We did struggle with flies. But it wasn't that bad at all, nothing that could fix doom.
Rustic and escapist.
The Kol Kol and view were amazing, but the cottage is a bit tired and needs attention, especially the doors and the bathroom as it has a very musty smell that permeates the room. The fridge and especially the freezer part had a particularly bad smell and we therefore did not want to use the fridge.
Hopelessly overpriced for what you get. The furniture is old and looks terribly bad (no leather sofas as advertised, it's 'pleather'). The walls are dirty and it shows no maintenance. The 'dishwasher's' soap lies in an old bakkie to one side and has already deteriorated with time and melted. The second room's bed wasn't even made up and didn't even have a duvet cover on it. The shower is clogged, the whole bathroom is under water when one takes a shower. The sliding doors are all a pain to close, the wind blows and there is no place to hook any door either, you just have to find a stone and sit in front of the door. No curtains or 'blinds'. Everything is open and anyone can look into the house if they want. The world is full of fly swatters, but no other effort is made to catch or keep flies away. For this price it is not worth it, maybe R600 per night - but not a cent more. We did enjoy the hot tub and view, but other than that, never again will I use the services of this so-called 'lodge'.
Unfortunately, Avani Lodge is not worth the price. The houses are a bit neglected. The doors and windows cannot be locked and privacy is very limited. Ewald was very friendly and came to make sure we were comfortable, but unfortunately that was the highlight. We had a lot of trouble with the hot water, which was very disappointing as the bath/shower was one of the things we looked forward to the most. Although I missed the e-mail that said to bring your own fire lighters and matches, I feel, for the price one pays, it is not unfair to expect these tools to be provided. Especially since everything works with gas and you are quite dependent on fire to stay warm.
Problems that have been discussed by many people are not addressed. We also had the gas issue empty bottles but had to move bottles ourselves only to see that the kitchen's bottle was also empty. Place not clean know it's rustic but it doesn't feel clean. Curtains will provide some privacy, doors can't lock and grills are just rusted but falling apart. It needs a little maintenance and at least a corkscrew. Had to bring in wood myself with a wheelbarrow. Braai is packed just like that, do something decent or leave it.
My husband and I celebrated our wedding anniversary at Avani Lodge Private Nature Reserve. The owner of the farm, Ewald Groenewald, met us when we arrived. The fire bath was already heated. We had the most amazing views of nature. We were surprised with biscuits and coffee filter. The Sunday before we had to check out, the worst storm we have ever experienced hit Botrivier. Our kitchen area's roof blew off and numerous trees broke around us. The river rose so high that both exits were washed away where we had to stay for 4 days longer - at no extra cost. The owner put us and 2 other couples in a house on one of the neighboring farms and went out of his way to help us with food and water. Even with the storm and the damage they suffered, Ewald and his wife always remained positive and immediately set to work to make the roads accessible and provide food for his guests. We will definitely visit again and definitely recommend them.
If you struggle to relax, Avani Lodge is the place for you. The tranquility of the farm and nature leaves you no choice but to take in the beauty around you. My partner and I enjoyed the heated pool the most. If you sit in the heated pool in the evening with the lights off, you can see the stars shining bright (I would definitely recommend it). Avani Lodge also has a walking trail that can be followed by following the red pebbles. The walking route to the river has a beautiful view. The owners are friendly and left a cute gift. I recommend Avani Lodge to everyone.
You can't get any closer to silence and nature. It's little things that make a difference like the jacuzzi which was already hot when we got there. We will definitely go again!
Absolutely stunning. Would definitely want to go again.
We got engaged here in 2021 & came to enjoy our short honeymoon in 2023. We will cherish the memories of Avani Lodge forever.
If you're needing a break in nature, definitely have a look at Avani! Nestled in amongst pine trees, the most noise you'll hear is the breeze through the trees. We stayed at Oyster Cottage and absolutely loved being able to just unwind with a book under the terrace, relax in the hot tub and braai our nights away. We left Avani feeling relaxed and revitalised - definitely recommend it!
We had the most amazing experience at Avani this past weekend. Absolute tranquility with nothing but the sound of birds and the wind blowing through the pine trees. We wanted for nothing as we had all the comforts we needed. We were supplied with more than enough wood for the weekend and received a wonderful gift from Ewald (the owner) who is a most gracious host!
A lovely relaxing few days in a clean place with everything you need and an exceptional host. Really worth visiting.
Very pleasant and beautiful wood is brought in every day for a hot bath.
We celebrated our first wedding anniversary there and couldn't have chosen a better place, peaceful, beautiful and the hot pool was a winner, will definitely go again.
They should change the bed. It is uncomfortable.
We loved our stay at Avani Lodge Private Nature Reserve - we stayed in the Oyster Self Catering Unit. Ewald was friendly and welcoming - he brought some lovely coffee and rusks. We celebrated our 1-year wedding anniversary and really enjoyed the pre-heated wood-fired Jacuzzi on Friday. There is sufficient wood for braaing and to heat the Jacuzzi. It's fully self-catering with all the basic amenities, which we loved. Our only issue with the stay was that there was mold in the bath and on the floor of the shower, and as the unit is open-plan, it smelled like mold.
We had a lovely time in a beautiful private cottage. Views are stunning and are high up in the mountains. Cottage is enclosed with pine trees. We enjoyed the outside shower and the hot tubs in the evening! It is a special place and we will definitely visit again!
The owner upgraded our unit at no additional cost due to bad weather. However, the gas tank was empty and we had to endure a cold shower. Otherwise, excellent stay in rainy and cold conditions.
The roof was leaking, the windows were cracked and leaking too. There was not always water available in the taps and it was not hot either. So we couldn't take a shower. There is a lot of counterspace to make on food and it made me feel like I was camping. The place just didn't live up to my expectations because the price. I expected a romantic getaway. The walls were also dirty and chipped. There are no curtains. Not in the bedroom either and the guests of the other houses can walk past and look in. What is positive is that they get the hot tub ready for us.
The place was ok, but on arrival there was no hot water. It must have recovered after a few hours when the hot water system was repaired. We also sat without water for a long time, about 3 hours, before it was restored. There were no lights provided during a power outage, and on Sunday there was no water. When we left at 09h00 there was still no water. No, I will not book there again.
Was very disappointed in the cottage, apart from the beautiful surroundings and the "hot tub". Everything is run down and feels neglected. One small "bar fridge" for an entire weekend's food is not sufficient. The site is neglected with felled trees and dead branches everywhere along the roads and between the houses. I am aware that it is in nature, but the flies in the house were unbearable - so that you can't even put anything out to eat and enjoy with a glass of wine. The shower's hot water is off every now and then, then the tap has to be turned off to make the "pilot light" work again, so you have to keep jumping around between the cold and then blazing hot water. The kitchen just feels gross! The grill for the braai is very well done.
Our car suffered damages due to the gravel and damages caused due to the flooding. I love Avani but my 2nd visit was not very pleasant. I feel that a discount should have been an option.
Great place at a great price.
If recommendations can be made, we would think a key to lock the doors would help with peace of mind as all your valuables are in the cottage. Air cooling on a hot summer evening can work ideally.
They should just ensure that the gas tanks are full and see that the swimming pool is clean in case visitors would like to swim.
No television and wifi. Only the peaceful nature and the company of your partner and of course the KolKol hot tub on the stoep make everything perfect! We got delicious biscuits, olives and filter coffee. I would definitely recommend this romantic spot!
Very quiet, hot tub was amazing, nice walking trails, loved it.
We had such a good time! We were met with a warm KolKol and spent most of our visit in it. It was peaceful and we could just relax. Will definitely go again.
The house was fully stocked and clean. The views are to die for. The staff were super friendly. I wanted to take Sebastian the cat home with me. He is the cutest thing on this planet. We will definitely be back. Was so peaceful and relaxing. They really have done an amazing job.
The scenery is breathtaking.
The views are breathtaking, the customer service excellent and we are in love with the giant Sebastian cat. We will definitely visit Avani Lodge again. A true hidden gem.
Was vreeslik lekker gewees.
What an amazing place. Owner very friendly, made you feel so welcomed. Loved Sebastiaan the cat who stayed the whole weekend with us.
It was an experience, the tranquility and nature was amazing and does one's soul good. The frequent visits from Sebastian the cat was a plus. It was a great weekend and everything we needed was provided. I would definitely recommend Avani again.
This place will offer you peace and tranquility. It is a rustic setup with beautiful views and the farm's animals will come and greet you. No amenities were provided(as advertised), but plenty of wood is provided for the hot tub and braai. The area is safe and hidden away in a forest like setup. Some houses are closer to one another than others, thus if you want complete privacy, I will recommend that you choose the bigger option chalets. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
My husband and I went to Avani for our honeymoon and we couldn't have asked for a more ideal and romantic experience. The outdoor kitchen, the hot tub and the 'bottomless' wood supply are everything that people could wish for for such a special occasion. I would advise future visitors to pack enough repellent for the flies (they have a bit of a party there during the day) as well as your own pillows, if you prefer a firmer pillow. An incredible experience and brilliant value for money.
The owner made sure he gave the best bed and good quality bedding. So 10/10!
Extremely beautiful place, offering so much tranquility. This is definitely a hidden gem. We enjoyed the hot tub, pool and fire area. They are also very generous with the wood. Thank you for an amazing stay. Would definitely come back again.
I would love to come back again soon, its such a special place, it was my third time there, and actually my favourite of the lot.
Our host was very friendly, thank you to Ewald for always coming by to check if we were OK, with his friendly dogs and friendly cat Sabastian who visited us, The place was super clean and tidy, loved the bed and bedding. Loved the indoor/outdoor living area. I will recommend the place to anyone. We had a wonderful weekend. The photos we saw are exactly what we saw on arrival. Equipped with everything you need in the place. Thank you Ewald, your place is stunning.
So quiet and so peaceful. The bed sleeps well. Furnished with everything you need.
Incredibly interesting architecture, very neatly clean and comfortably furnished. Beautiful views. Wonderful hot tub, barbecue and social area.
All negative feedback I can give is the braai and Jacuzzi area is directly in the sun. It would be very nice if there was a canopy or at least umbrellas or something outside. We got so hot in the sun. Fortunately, we took an umbrella with us, which at least helped a little. Other than that we had a wonderful stay.
Great value and definitely interested in visiting again.
Small unit, with gas shower and stove. This means loadshedding does not have too great an impact. Firewood is provided free of charge and the owner made sure the hot tub was hot enough on the 2 days we weren't there to do it ourselves. Just be warned, the dirt road to Avani is not in the most amazing condition.
Nice and quiet, fresh forest smell every morning with a cup of coffee. Very quiet, best place to relax and switch off.
Apart from the damp issues (terrible smell in the kitchen and main bedroom/bathroom), it was really lovely. Will definitely return, but to another cottage.
Avani Lodge is quite isolated, it was a surprise for us to see that it is quite in the "boondoes", owner is busy with updates to existing units, he might just consider adding a bit of light to the entrance to the premises too spacious
We would recommend fly catches. Lots of flies around.
From the initially booking, we were very excited to stay at Avani, which is advertised as being in the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley. To prevent a long review, the following will be of the highlights and lowlights. Highlights: Fantastic view of the Botrivier Wine Valley. Excellent and efficient hot wat tub. Plenty of wood for hot water tub and fire. Central to the various towns with beautiful drives to get there. Lowlights. Abrupt bordering on rude host. Very rustic accommodation with no cupboards in bedrooms and minimal facilities. Inconsistent kitchen facilities. 3 glasses, 6 plastic tumblers and 12 mugs. During summer the West facing Parrastoel is extremely hot with no blinds or curtains to shelter from the direct sun the whole afternoon. During the day there is an influx of house flies and two of the four nights we had rats in the roof during the night. Although more poison was put out, the replacement of the hot tub water offered and a basic level of hospitality offered, we were disappointed with this stay. Especially as we had to book a minimum of 5 nights. Also, unless I am wrong this is definitely not situated in the Hemel-en-Aarde wine valley.
Flies ruined the time, causing unnecessary stress and tension. Millions of them! Pool was dirty and unusable. Quite sad as it's a really lovely location with lots of potential. Major disconnect between price and offering.
The area is amazing! The mountains and nature are beautiful! Avani is recommended for privacy and romance, but it is not quite so. Give the customers the choice whether they would like to close their windows or not. No curtains are in front of the windows of the rooms or the showers. Residents of 2 houses were able to watch my daughter while she showered. No curtains to cover the windows. My rondavel didn't have curtains either. Or fence every little house with decent walls that can't be seen through. There was no gas stove or microwave in my unit, which made cooking a problem. Privacy and an incredible amount of flies was a big problem for me. Sorry that this is not the review I wanted to give, but I have to be honest.
I would add a TV or a microwave but other than that the place is perfect for couple who want to relax and do very little.
The cottage was perfectly situated amongst the pine trees, with the heated bath under the canopy by the braai definitely a winner. Neat bedroom and bathroom laid out in stone, with a comfortable bed.
Ewald was an amazing host, came out to main road when we got lost. Very friendly and attentive to our needs. Word of advise check geyser setting outside before taking showers, as it is a freezing cold awakening if it's not turned up. Plenty of wood and Gas. Hot tub at Hen of the Woods.
It couldn't be more perfect! Avani Lodge will always have a big place in my heart. It is very peaceful and beautiful. We can't wait to go again!
Awesome place to go and have some alone time relaxing in the jacuzzi with the fire going. Wine farm as well as you get on the dirt road on the way to the reserve as well Hermanus about 25km away for activities during the day. Great walking and hiking trail at the reserve with amazing views.
The cat was a treat!
It's an amazing place with great views of nature. Definitely somewhere I would stay again.
We stayed in Pine Ring, the only thing I would change would be to put up a screen on the one side of the outside area, as I did feel a little uncomfortable walking around in my costume and the other places could look down onto us if they really wanted to. But besides that, it was absolutely breathtaking and we had a glorious time and Sebastian, the resident cat, was a delight
See stars.
Very nice. Would recommend it.
If you want to break away for the city noise and just want to relax, Avani Lodge is the place to go. The stars at night are amazing.
My partner and I would like to give a huge thank you to Oom Ewald for his genuine hospitality and warmness upon our arrival and throughout. I would honestly give Avani a 10/10 rating and my partner and I will definitely be returning in the near future. Stunning, rejuvenating and a happy experience are all we can say to sum up the weekend. Thanks a lot!
Perfect place to recharge. Close to nature, beautiful surroundings. Accommodation is comfortable has everything you need.
The location of Avani Lodge is perfect, you won't find a better place to rest. We will definitely be coming back to switch off.
Staying at Avani was exactly what we needed. The tranquility was amazing. Thank you to an amazing host.
The cottage was well appointed and the hot tub is a winner!
The best destination to find inner peace. Natural beauty as far as the eye can see, very beautiful and worth visiting.
Great break from the hustle and bustle of the city.
Facility needs attention. Many doors are difficult to open. General finishing and renovation in and around the house must be done. Comments should not be seen as negative, just to help owners.
Great winter getaway! Everyone was very friendly and helpful. Only feedback I have is that the unit needs some renovations and upgrades.
All in order, was peaceful and good for my soul. Got a pleasant surprise of a bottle of olives. Very dear.
Power not working, cold water. Rails for towels needed. Home should be made private.
The accommodation is average. The bath was painted and peeling all over not as per pictures on web. The kettle had a crack in spout and dripped as you poured. Frying pan cover had to be retrieved from the back of the cupboard as it was lodged in the back and never used. Local barking dog that runs around the chalets and barks continuously when in area. Was awoken 7:20am on Saturday morning with dog barking at my door. Manager showed an attempt to retrieve the dog during the day supposingly reported from another chalet. The surrounding areas around seems mostly under construction with pipes, cement, building goods and rubble spread all around which does not give that pleasant feel when trying to walk around in nature. On entering the reserve one can notice the deterioration in the entrance area and surrounds. The place is lovely if you walk away from the accommodation area and stroll into the mountains with lovely views. Going back again, unlikely. I braaied stepping continuously over a 20 mm black hose coming from the kol kol only to have it removed on the last day when leaving. Overall I personally with wife would not return as you can experience other places way more maintained and at a lessor rate.
Very secluded, peaceful environment and the accommodation is very basic almost like camping. We enjoyed our time there and then also visited several wine farms in the area. The splash pool on the porch was also lovely.
We had a fantastic stay at Avani Lodge! It was secluded and private. We'll definitely be back.
Great getaway place for a small family or a couple. Walking trails, swimming pool/hot tub, very nice place to sleep and for me personally the braai facilities. Fantastic.
You will definitely see us again.
The host was very thoughtful and went out of his way to make our stay memorable. Avani is more than just a tourist destination - it's like a family reunion. We will definitely come again.
The hospitality was amazing, Ewald is a super host, as well as everyone there. We saw baboons, different beautiful bird types, rabbits and different types of lizards. I would definitely go again.
Kindest welcome and farewell from Uncle Ewald. It's really a romantic place for any couple who just want to enjoy each other's company in the open nature and get away from the everyday hustle and bustle! Jacuzzi was already hot on arrival and the fire could burn all night. Going back for sure.
Such a lovely place to break away for the weekend!
Brilliant customer service and going the extra mile, definitely the nicest place we've ever stayed. Will definitely go there again.
A lovely, quiet and peaceful setting surrounded by nature. No noise, no hustle and bustle of the city - pure bliss. The privacy was absolutely amazing. Ewald is a great host and always happy to assist. Just recommended the addition of a large comfortable lounging chair for readers and day sleepers. 3 nights was just not enough, wish I was there for another week.
Our stay at Avani lodge was just what we needed. A beautiful, peaceful place with a wonderful owner who is very accommodating. There's an outdoor Jacuzzi in a stunning forest setting. And the best wine farms a couple of minutes away. A must for couples needing a quick breakaway.
It's beautiful there. Quiet in the mountains. Will go again.
Best place to switch off and be peaceful or just to escape from the city and spend time in nature.
From the booking, everyone was very friendly and made us very excited to break away from there. Upon arrival we were welcomed by Ewald and immediately felt at home and began to relax. The only downside is that we couldn't stay there an extra day.
The overall experience was great! Host was very pleasant, friendly and helpful. The hot tub is excellent. We were worried that it might not be warm enough in the cold, but exceeded all expectations. Will definitely go again!
Very peaceful and would like to use it again.
Everything was very nice and tidy. We stayed in Magic. When we got there, the hot tub was already very hot, but we couldn't get in because of the heat. All we can complain about is the 2 wooden garden chairs were loin lame and couldn't dare to sit on them. The other negative thing was the barbecue grill/s. It was rusted and burnt and falling apart. For such a beautiful place, they could have already invested a few Rand and bought a new grill. I would definitely not recommend the access road up to Magic with a car. There are some rocks in and on the road. Luckily we were driving a van.
A small stone house with a lovely outdoor jacuzzi, which works on the donkey system and was already lit for us before our arrival, welcomed us. Ewald showed us where everything is and how things work and told us about activities on the reserve. He was friendly and helpful and available at all times. There was a lovely braai next to the jacuzzi and just a few meters up the hill on a swimming pool with a sauna next to it. We also did the walking route around the reserve (it's about 6.2 km), with a beautiful view. It was a lovely visit and we will definitely go back again!
The place was neat and clean. The host was friendly and the area is safe with beautiful scenery, but I was very disappointed that there was no hot water for a bath or shower. There is a lovely bath with a view (the draw for our booking) but we didn't get to use it. The water pressure was very weak and as soon as we opened the tap more the water went from lukewarm to cold, we even tried to boil water for a hot bath but the induction stove took more than 15 minutes to heat one kettle boiling, causing the water to turn cold again while we waited for the next kettle to boil. Sunday was very cold and rainy and a cold shower was very unpleasant. We asked if the geyser could be set hotter or if the gas might be running out and was only told that it was. The place has a lot of potential, but we consider enough hot water for a shower/bath as a requirement for a weekend getaway. The Kol-Kol hot tubs are delicious, but one has to be able to get clean after the time.
Avani Lodge exceeded all my expectations. The cottage and hot pool were very clean and comfortable. That there was no TV, was nice so we were forced to talk to each other. Uncle Ewald is a very pleasant person and makes an awesome Pinot Noir! The location is nice and nice hiking trails.
We were warmly welcomed. The cottage has everything you need. We immediately made ourselves at home in the wood fire hot tub. The view and nature are breathtakingly beautiful. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to get away from the busy city life.
Place was perfect, other than the fridge which was not working properly, kept freezing over. Ewald was a great host.
Owner is very hospitable. Place is beautiful and peaceful. Wonderful break from the busy life!
Negatives: For the price I expected more in regards to finishes especially on the porch area where it looks like flanged together workmanship. If it wasn't for the hot tub the overall experience would have been negative. Porch area floor was still dirty with sticky spots that attracted many flies. Outdoor chairs' cushions need a good cleaning. Toilet had difficulty flushing and had to pour buckets of water in to help with flushing. Unit's thatched roof needs attention, because grass is coming loose. Shower has two large venters facing outside ─ so no privacy if you want to shower unless you shower while it's dark and all lights are off. Positives: Owner was friendly and surprised us with a bottle of red wine and pot of olives. Location is good, view breathtaking, I believe the place has a lot of potential if maintenance is done. Unit was clean with neat bedding and towels.
