85 guests' feedbackWe loved our 2 nights at the Stone Cottage! Small, quaint and simple - so peaceful and relaxing! We loved sitting outside at the cottage watching the eland, wildebeest, zebra, warthogs, jackals, bee eaters, eagles, and so many more birds/game. The trails were great as well - some better taken care of than others, but overall, good fun and beautiful! We would have liked to have been told about the slow & rough road (17km to the entrance gate) and the road condition getting to the cottage - we made it in our small car, but would have chosen a higher clearance vehicle had we known. A few small issues arose during our stay, but were very quickly addressed and sorted by the staff.
Peaceful and quiet. Restful.
If you are looking for peace and quiet with basic but comfortable accommodation, look no further. We stayed in Stone Cottage number 8 with a beautiful view of the valley. Every morning, impala and wildebeest surrounded the cottage, and we saw eland, giraffe, and warthog as well. The hiking is pretty technical but well worth it. There are a few maintenance issues in the cottage, for example, some broken tiles and missing curtains, as well as the outside light needing to be replaced, but otherwise it was clean and had everything you would need for a weekend away. Will definitely be back! Thank you for a wonderful stay!
It was perfect. Had lots of fun.
Everything is perfect. I just suggest coming with a van or something like that, the road can get rough, but on the other hand you have to think it's in the hills. Beautiful view, comfortable beds. Great service. Thank you Susan, Walter and Levy and of course Janeatha.
Had an amazing stay! Even though we got rained in, it was really beautiful! Got to spend some much needed quality time together! If you want luxury go to Sandton, if you want peace go to Bateleur!
Well marked hiking trails, safe environment. Secluded from the world yet only two hours drive from Gauteng.
Nature and silence.
The geyser was broken in the cottage. Although Wouter made arrangements for us to shower in another cottage, it was a bit inconvenient to boil water for dishes. But otherwise it had been a nice walking weekend.
Reception is non existent. Carpets and curtains are filthy. We had to drive to look for signal to buy power and charge up. There are rats in the house. There are not enough utensils in the kitchen to cook comfortably. The freezer door keeps opening. The kitchen cabinets are loincloth. The scenery is really special but I would not recommend the stay at all.
It was very clean and tidy.
Had no power all weekend. There is solar but did not work. No toilet paper in bathroom. Please also sit wine opener in the room. The reception is just an old building where you can get wood but never saw anyone. The specific unit is a bit expensive for the amenities, especially if it doesn't work. On the plus side, it's very private. Gas geyser very nice. Simple the way we like it. Will go back to the simplicity and tranquility and privacy.
There were cigarette butts, old chicken legs in the living area. Was really dirty. Braai area also not cleaned ─ beer bottles and stumps littered the entire world. Accommodation spacious but again not clean. Bath dirty and full of insects. The rest of the house also has insects, as well as rats in the kitchen cupboard. No fans and in summer heat it gets unpleasant. Needs renovation work urgently.
We were not greeted by the owners on arrival. In fact we did not see the owners once during the weekend, a courtesy visit would have been nice. The place is too small for the price we paid. The road is terrible. It not suited for a normal sedan. Only SUV's or similar. We only found out about the swimming pool, late on the second day. A map was stuffed inside on of the bedside tables in case you would wanted to go hiking. The place is peaceful and the houses far from each other which was nice and we had a beautiful view.
It was a very nice getaway. There is no one near you. It's so good you pitch a tent in the middle of nowhere and it's just you and the field. So for silence, scenery, seclusion it is perfect. Please take mind you, it's not luxury. You can also sleep in a tent in the field. If you are a city person, or a "glamper", the place may not be for you. It's basic. The unit is furnished with the absolute basic necessities. Take a book, board games and walking shoes. TV and cell phones don't work, and that's exactly the point of Bateleur. For a break from the noise, the city, people, technology: 10/10. The price per night is a little high for what you get in terms of a well-maintained self-catering unit if you have to compare. Finally, read the website and make 100% sure you know what you're getting yourself into with your expectations.
Everything was very nice and clean and the variety of hiking trails was great.
Perfect retreat that provides serenity and peace. The establishment thrives in all aspects it gives you the luxury of an exquisite hotel yet in the wild. Only regret is not booking longer.
Bateleur offers a comfortable stay for a city wary traveller. With 10 different hiking trails there is lots to do. We walked the Escarpment Trail which is a deceptive 6,4 km of scrambling up and down rocks through the Waterberg Biosphere. The views, the diversity of plant life and the surprise of seeing the Wildebeest, Baboons, Impala, Zebra, Blesbok and Warthog make it all worthwhile. The Game Trail is an easier veld-hike. The little dams offer a more rustic swimming pool and a great way to cool off after a day of hiking. One of the best things about Bateleur is however the limited mobile reception - making it a great place to switch off and just be. We enjoyed our rustic, bush break and I look forward to another soon.
Abundant wildlife and birds make it an unforgettable experience.
For the nature lover it is ideal.
The accommodation is very basic with a donkey for hot water (he chops and cooks wood himself every day). It was also very hot. We brought our own fans which helped a lot.
No cell phone reception within 15 km radius. Would never have booked accommodation if we knew there was no catchment. Day 2 there was a signal 4 km away from Mispel cottage. Not value for money. Not even allowed to drive yourself to look at wildlife. Was not welcomed or received. Bitterly disappointed by Batelateur. Would not recommend this place to anyone.
Was peaceful and quiet, very tidy, if you want a break from city life and cell phones and computers, this is the place. Lots of wildlife seen using the footpaths, not too far from JHB and PTA, roads are dirt roads but in good condition. Felt very safe, just longing for the tranquility of the field. Thank you thank you, my soul is filled again.
The reserve is an unforgettable peaceful place, with abundant wildlife and walking trails. Ideal for deep thinking and reflecting on life.
Very neat place. Hospitality and the silence is the reason why I will definitely go back.
We arrived at Bateleur Natuur Reserve on Friday night and received a friendly welcoming. The wood we bought at the reserve was first class. The peace and the fact that it felt like we were alone in the reserve was like heaven. The animals that came to our unit and that crossed our paths during the weekend was very exciting. The hiking route we did on the Saturday was very comfortable, yet a challenge for our unfit bodies.
The natural scenery and quiet at Bataleur Nature Reserve is the ideal setup to recharge. Not far from Johannesburg and Pretoria and not breaking the bank. Even though the house needs a bit of TLC, everything was clean and neat. Staff are friendly and helpful. Thank you for a great weekend.
The Mountain Villa was very suitable for us as a group of 9. We just had to pay close attention to the little ones so they didn't fall down the stairs. Eliza provided good service and was on time every day to wash the dishes. The bedding was very clean and tidy - thank you. The house needs attention - faucets that leak and showers that need a proper cleaning.
Dusty and cobwebs!
For what you get, the place is way overpriced. The fireplace in the house leaked smoke so everything later smelled of smoke. If we were 6 people, the blankets would have been hopelessly too few. Luckily we could have used some of the extra room's blankets. The mattresses on the beds are laid like this and make the unearthly noises. Everyone got up with a sore throat.
Maintainance, bath tubs rusted, spider webs all over the house, borehole water is brown and dirty, last day we slept without electricity.
It was truly a peaceful weekend, we really enjoyed the stay, hospitality, silence, hiking trails, I will go back again and again.
We would give anything to stay longer! Next time we will definitely plan it that way. The cottages are wonderfully spacious and comfortably equipped and far enough apart that it almost feels like you are alone on the farm. Thanks to Wouter for all the assistance ahead of time, so that we could get there easily and knew exactly what to pack, so that we could visit comfortably.
You can not bring your Ferrari here, because there is a small piece of rough dirt road. But if you leave your fancy car at home and drive here unpretentiously, you'll end up being so close to something heavenly that the road is absolutely worth it. Our stone cottage was beautifully clean with everything we needed. And then the abundant silence ... If your head is just too busy and you have to reboot, then this place is for you! There is no entertainment, not even a swimming pool. But, at your own speed, you can braai, walk along the footpath or the old wagon trail, read a book, lie in the bath (as you watch the goats through the giant window), sleep, wake up to the breathtaking sunrise, turn around and sleep on, play games and drink hot chocolate in the evening in front of the fireplace. Truly heavenly.
What a wonderful, peaceful setting to relax in. We enjoyed it immensely. The hiking trails are a plus. Note that this stay is not for someone expecting a spa and five-star hotel treatment. It is for the people who live close to nature and want to enjoy complete silence, rest and peace. We will definitely go again.
I recommend Bateleur to anyone who is tired of the city's noise and bustle. It is clean, tidy, quiet, safe and the service is good. Thank you very much for an invigorating 2 days.
Great place to take a break from city life. Beautiful surroundings and hikes. Very peaceful. Will definitely love to visit again.
My mother and son was very impressed and just want to go back.
This was a very relaxing and quiet trip. Clean residences and a book lover's perfect getaway.
At Bateleur very kindly received by Wouter. Although the Mountain Villa is old and may need some attention, the place was spotless and women were impressed with the crisp white linen. The place is big and there was enough for us 12 adults as well as two babies. The house has everything you need and you only need to bring water and ice as well as your own towels. Over the three days we used a cleaner from Bateleur who worked very thoroughly. The braai place was a very sought after place in the evening as there is a braai pit as well as a slab with sunken braai place. The bird life was excellent as well as the wildlife was plentiful and we just stayed at the house, swimming pool was spotless. If you are a nature lover, this is the place to come and stay. Wouter stopped by again on Saturday evening to make sure everything was in order. Will definitely stay there again.
We had a great time in Mispel No. 5 - never any noise like loud music - only nature. We had a great time walking, watching birds and taking pictures and will definitely go again. The accommodation is, as clearly communicated, clean and tidy, but not 5-star lodge type. The linen is spotless and our dishes were washed very nicely as agreed. We drank the water and nothing happened. The road there was bad (Saturday), but when we drove back on Tuesday it was scraped and much better. In the rush to get away, I didn't read my last email, so we were held up at the gate for a while. Although it was my mistake, was in a suggestion: once first-time visitors call or text from Bela-Bela to notify you, maybe send an SMS with the pin code.
Beautiful authentic farmhouse on a peaceful game farm. Limited mobile phone reception, which ensures that one can properly relax and enjoy quality time with friends.
Bateleur is a great place for hiking, birding and experiencing nature in the traditional way. It's low-key and fairly basic, but that's exactly what we were looking for. We stayed at the farmhouse, enjoying its great 360 degree views and stoep, and as we were two families, each with 2 small kids, we liked the spaciousness of the 3 bedrooms plus "granny flat", and the total of 3 bathrooms. The hikes were beautiful and it was very special to see roan antelope and a huge flock of bee eaters around their nests in an old dry dam wall. Some other special moments were the sunsets over the grass plains and a huge kudu bull silhouetted on top of a hill one late afternoon just as we got close to the house after a game drive. The beautiful "plaasdam" looked very inviting but it was just not warm enough for a swim. Go there, get up early, drink coffe and watch the sunrise from the stoep.
Scenery is beautiful!
Bliss for one's soul is found here. Vaalboom Cottage is tidy and has everything you need.
Good location. Accommodation met all needs: comfortable place to sleep with clean bedding. The bees in the house was a problem on the first day (my wife sustained bee stings). Owner offered alternative accommodation on our second day there. Walking trails are easy and doable for the whole family. Pamphlets with walking trails/animals on site would have been handy. In general we really enjoyed the natural scenery.
The farm is well managed and we would like to return. Just 3 things: 1) The water is not drinkable, merely dirty with sand in it, so you can't even take a bath. It needs to be fixed. 2) The braai grid was rusted. Equipment like that should be maintained or replaced. 3) Out unit is for 3 persons and there were exactly 3 of everything: plates, cups and cutlery. That's ridiculous as we had to wash the dishes after every meal. Surely they could make more utensils available - I doubt anyone would steal it.
Basic facilities and accommodation. Everything is in working order but more pots and pans will be appreciated. Maybe make a game drive available, or maybe a horse or three for visitors who can't or don't want to hit the hiking trails on foot. It is such a beautiful area and location (and the drivable routes are very limited) I believe most visitors (hardened hikers excluded) won't be able to enjoy even a third of the potential.
The paths to the reception are a bit rough. Our gas bottle was practically empty, we didn't know there was a full bottle in a cupboard that was locked. the maid unlocked for us she has the key. The cauldron inside looked hideous. We didn't want to boil water in him. The servant brought us another kettle. Curtain in my room was notched at the top and without rings. I took pictures of everything. Furthermore, we had a great time, the children and grandchildren had a great time swimming. We don't care at all about the age of the house, but it could be cleaned decently.
The way the place is marketed on the internet is completely the opposite of the physical and practical situation. We found the cottage (Vaal - Boom) which we occupied almost inhabitable and lousy without tidy pots, clean dish cloths, microwave, proper working fridge, daily changed bedding, daily room cleaning, sufficient toilet paper, proper room service connection and proper floor carpet. Also, no clean and attractive swimming pools are available and other interesting amenities except ordinary handful wild animals.
We had a really nice stay and the hiking trail we walked was well marked with beautiful views (and we saw many different goats, zebras and even warthogs). The cottage was very simple but had everything we needed. Plus, we really enjoyed the boma outside. If you are not used to this type of break, just remember to take everything you will need with you... towels, soap and salt included! Just also remember that there is a reasonable dirt road before you get to your destination if you are planning which car you want to take.
Help and personal attention to our needs were given - something not always found at guesthouses or farms.
We really enjoyed the tranquillity of the farm as well as the beautiful hiking trails. Nothing luxurious, just clean and neat with everything we needed. Thanks Wouter.
Affordable accommodation in a wonderful setting.
Wonderfully peaceful. It is a good destination to just relax. Please note that guests are prohibited from viewing wildlife with their own vehicles.
We really enjoyed the peaceful atmosphere. The swimming pool close to Mispel Cottage was definitely a winner during the heat wave. The cottage is equipped with everything you need, but bring your own salt, soap and towels. There is no TV, so bring a book to read. The cellphone reception is also limited. Maybe Bateluer could consider installing insect-repelling gauze screens in front of the windows so that you can leave the windows open on a warm day. We will definitely stay there again.
Very peaceful - here you can relax and rest in the silence. The road signs could improve. Would definitely recommend it to people who want to enjoy the silence and nature!
Great spacious house with ample space for all. Enjoyed the weekend with my family. Wish we had more time to explore the trails.
We stayed in Gumtree Cottage (cottage with two bedrooms, sleeps 6 people). The furniture is very old and the concrete floor is painted green in some areas, which does not make it feel very cosy. You have to bring your own towels and toilet paper and do not forget to get the pin code for the entrance. Saw a ghost appear on several occasions during the night. One bedroom window was broken when we got there and somebody could easily climb through there. We left one day before we were supposed to and booked into Nylstroom Lodge. Lost R1200 but I didn't care, just had to get out of there. There is no cellphone reception. The place is full of ants, especially the terrace. The surroundings are scenic, we enjoyed some hiking and the birds were good. It is sure worth a daytrip for hiking and maybe the other houses are in a better condition. We found it overpriced and basic compared to other accommodation in the area.
Our accommodation was basic and very private. It's so quiet you can hear the silence. The nature is breathtaking, outside our accommodation there was a salt block and the animals came to lick it on a regular basis outside our accommodation, brilliant.
We enjoyed every moment at Bateleur Nature Reserve! The house is BIG and neat. Very happy that there were 3 full bathrooms for our 10 people. Was really a nice woodland weekend with a nice campfire. The rock pools were nice and refreshing on such a hot day. I'll just say the attached photo doesn't look like the pools we were at.
Great and beautiful environment. Great bed! Delicious, warm water. Bring your own lights too! DELICIOUS!
The drought is just something freezing. We couldn't walk very far because it was incredibly hot. We pray for rain for these people.
Directions by Wouter 100% - accommodation comfortable even if it is not (as previously warned) five star. Beautiful well marked hiking trails. Wouter was very accommodating with arrival and departure times. Recommended for people who want to spend a nice quiet weekend in nature.
We were a group of 12 people, a youth leader group, and stayed in the Mountain View house for 2 nights. What a pleasure. The farm has nice walking trails, and is perfect for youth groups. The only downside is the 16 km long dirt road to the farm, and then the 4 km long road on the farm, must be driven with a 4x4, especially if you are towing a trailer.
All I want to say is: if you are caged, caged, excited and crowded in our every-day-maze-around-the-waist life here in the city: GO BE HUMAN AGAIN! Go experience the beauty, the patience and the absolute peace and quiet of nature again!
My friend and I had a great time. The hospitality is amazing, the service is wonderful. I would most definitely visit again. Wouter really knows how to take care of his guests.
The place is very peaceful and there are nice hiking trails that you can walk. Enjoyed it a lot.
We had a great stay, its perfect for peace and quiet, great hiking, not another soul in sight. The accommodation is clean, with absolutely everything you need. Service was great. I definitely recommend giving it a try, and we will be back.
Wouter, thank you very much for an incredibly peaceful and private week. Nature is incredibly beautiful. We will definitely visit again!
See the stars below.
What a wonderful experience to break away from the city and come back to nature and silence. I would definitely like to come back for a few days to rest and tackle some of the other hiking trails. A big thank you to Wouter and his team who made me feel right at home and for the friendly service.
We had a wonderful weekend in the woods. It was amazing how we hardly saw or heard any other people. Nature, unimproved and at its best. Feel free to go, but try to buy everything before you get there, it's a fair drive into town and the dirt road can get uncomfortable in places if you're driving a car.
Awesome getaway. Will be back.
One can delight in the animals and the tranquility of nature. There are pools of water to swim in. The walking paths are an absolute must. I would like to make a special mention of the Porcupine Walk which we also walked. It was the ideal getaway from the city, suitable for people with a need for silence, tranquility and nature. In the evening you can listen to a fox while roasting meat and reflecting on the day's events.
The nature is beautiful: the mountains, water pools and hiking trails. Unfortunately we saw very little wildlife. We stayed in the farmhouse, although the farmhouse is very spacious and cosy, the bathrooms need urgent attention.
We had a nice stay. Accommodation is affordable, but not luxurious. The unit was neat. However, the road to the houses needs attention.
Well, we had a time of our life here and the network issue made it even more special. It's the place to be when you want to get out of this world, and forget it all.
We got lost which was not so pleasant and we arrived late at night but the journey was enjoyable. The guest house was clean and well catered for. A community pool would be a nice to have because not everyone wants to swim in a rock pool. My family had an amazing time at this nature reserve and we definitely will be coming back.
Was looking to get away to the bush and just relaxed, and Bateleur offered just that. Perfect location if you need to escape the city. Didn't see a lot of game though.
Lots of walks, clean accommodation.
