Bethulie Guest Farm
Bethulie Guest Farm
Bethulie Guest Farm
-
Designed by the renowned architect Sir Herbert Baker, the house comprises 5 large and elegantly furnished rooms, each with an open-plan bathroom. It has been lovingly restored and stylishly furnished with the original wooden flooring throughout and traditional South African ‘stoep’ on which cocktails and sundowners can be enjoyed whilst overlooking the wide open spaces.
On the farm itself, there are hectares of pecan nut trees while homegrown, seasonal vegetables, salads and hearty meals are served fresh from the farm kitchen. Meals can be planned and catered to individual requirements on request.
The small town of Bethulie offers several historic sites and a number of small restaurants. North of the town is the Bethulie Dam boasting holiday resorts on its shores and a nature reserve which is home to indigenous antelope. Enjoy the sunsets on the shores of the dam or, for the more adventurous, take a game drive yourself or use a tour operator in the area.

156 guests' feedbackLovely. The staff was incredibly friendly, the room was cosy, the bed was very comfortable, and the breakfast was delicious. Perfect BnB experience.
A very special stay in Victorian splendour. Our hosts and chef were lovely people who looked after us and made sure our dogs were kept in treats. Bethulie is an interesting place with historical and modern landmarks, and I hope with the efforts being taken by establishments like Bethulie Guest Farm and their hosts, this village experiences a regeneration.
Very nice! Hospitable management, delicious food.
One of the most beautiful guesthouses! Well equipped. Super friendly reception! Would love to visit there again. Put a smile on my face.
Superb hospitality and wholesome meals. A walk back in time staying in a Herbert Baker-designed house.
What an amazing experience to stay at Bethulie Guest Farm! It was just a stopover on a longer trip, but staying in this old farmhouse was simply wonderful! The dinner they offer is also simply incredible - proper South African farm food!
Bethulie Gasteplaas's ostrich unit exceeded our expectations. Clean, tidy and well appointed. Yard around unit was fenced and definitely pet friendly for our four legged child. The Herbert Baker historic main/guest house with antique furniture was very impressive. We really enjoyed the breakfast. Owners and managers were very hospitable and friendly.
Beautiful house and very friendly hosts. The dinner was also top class and nice to chat with the host and hostess.
What a beautiful place with the friendliest welcome and helpfulness we experienced on our 6582 km tour. The house is beautifully furnished and the room is equipped with everything one needs. Breakfast delicious. Can recommend Bethulie Guest Farm freely. Will miss the three friendly sheepdogs.
The most beautiful guest house. Victorian furniture, Cape Dutch gable house designed by Sir Herbert Baker. Friendly people. Delicious food! Karoo chops, vegetables and marshmallow pudding!
Very relaxing, blissful, peaceful place to be, historic and valuable. Will definitely stay there again.
Very good sleep, delicious dinner and breakfast, thank you Jess.
From the moment you arrive, you are swept away by the old world charm. The house is steeped in history and tradition. The furniture, linen and decor take your breath away, not to mention the dinner and breakfast served in, and with, the most beautiful cutlery. Received us kindly and hospitably and is simply a gem. Her food is top notch - I haven't tasted a lamb chop the way she made it in a long time! The stay is an experience that one cannot really describe, you have to experience it yourself.
The host was accommodating and friendly. The breakfast and dinner was delicious. The rooms are spacious and beautiful. Beautiful garden with farm animals. The host was great.
From the moment we drove in we felt welcome. The rooms were spacious, well appointed and comfortable. The animals around the property are great to see (farm dogs, ostriches, meerkats). The location is ideal, just outside of town. The hosts are accommodating and friendly. The breakfast was delicious. The only strange thing is the open bathrooms with a screen in front of them.
Very highly recommended.
Damn blerrie nice. Soft, cozy beds, delicious mattresses, enough old-world stuff to fill a museum. Spacious rooms with exquisite furniture; friendly, cute dogs; Historic farmhouse to dream of; spacious surrounding garden and farm area pleasant and attentive staff. The ideal disembarkation place for an overnight stay or more on a trip through the Free State.
We had a very nice stay. The host provided dinner on a Sunday evening even though we had not arranged in advance. The food is excellent.
We only stayed one night and it was lovely. Our breakfast the next morning & hospitality was top notch! Decor is stunning. Highly recommended.
Very nice stay. Meals were top notch.
This is an absolutely beautiful place, and absolutely value for money. We were also received very hospitably and helped with cutlery for our barbecue, etc. The website does not clearly state that the room and bathroom are in the same room, but it is visible from the photos and the guest house also has an extra toilet and the corridor if you want privacy. Beautiful house with wooden floors and the most beautiful decor.
The stay and room were wonderful and more than satisfactory. You truly get value for money as breakfast was comprehensive and delicious. The staff are proactive with check-in and helpful with suggestions.
Neat peaceful place to spend the night. Neat and clean, it's a peaceful smallholding that borders directly on the town, so very quiet area! Will stay there again.
It was a perfect stopover. The lamb chops for supper were well worth the little extra it cost!
It was probably one of the most beautiful places we have ever stayed. So neat and so clean, smallest detail was present to really make our sleepover so wonderful. The most delicious dinner and breakfast was served to us. I can definitely recommend this guest house to everyone.
We only stayed for one night, but it felt like a whole week of peace and quiet. Excellent service, 5-star breakfast, amazing bed, and superb facilities.
The dinner and breakfast are absolutely fantastic. Friendly and good service.
From arrival to departure we always felt welcome. Accommodation and meals were of the above quality. Many thanks to Alex and Jesse. Absolute gem in the Karoo.
There are many beautiful historic houses in South Africa. When it's well maintained, you're on to a winner, because the right people will also pamper you with care.
This is our second time staying here. We had to attend a family funeral. Alex and Jesse made our stay super comfortable during a difficult time in our lives. Loved seeing Einstein again. Jesse, your cooking is amazing. 5 star accommodation in my opinion.
I would drive all the way from Durban any day to come back for a visit. . Alex was so helpful and welcoming, and was happy to talk about the long history of the Guest House which is a Sir Herbert Baker circa 1923 house. Jess provided a delicious dinner (available on request for an extra charge). I would highly recommend it and look forward to exploring Bethulie and the Gariep Dam today. Thank you to the website for assisting me with this booking.
The antiques in the house are very well cared for and contribute to a unique stay experience.
Nice overnight stay. Good breakfast! Right for the long haul. Definitely see us again.
The guest house is unique and makes you feel a little nostalgic. The rooms are very well equipped and the shower is great. Enjoy a nice dinner and breakfast there.
Wayne and Riana are the perfect hosts. They made us feel as if we were home. They went the extra mile to make it possible for us to spend quality time with our parents who reside in Residentia in Bethulie. Thank you for making this a special few days for us. Will definitely visit again. Your home is beautiful and so are your hearts.
Very neat place, very good service really recommended if you want to experience the Bethulie area!
Wonderful weather experienced with lush green lawns and surroundings. Lord's house is superbly furnished which makes the stay very special. Old world charm contributed to a wonderful stay as well as the friendly customer service.
The owner is very hospitable. Dinner delicious country food. Antique furniture gives the guest house character.
Service was great. Food was delicious! Everything you need is provided: WiFi, water bottles, coffee, tea, tissues, towels, hand cream, electric blankets. Clean and tidy. We would recommend it to anyone.
This guest house is unique and so well kept, great dinner and breakfast and top quality bedding.
The host were friendly and very accommodating and loved the entire atmosphere.
Thank you for a pleasant overnight experience. The food was delicious and the hospitality was warm.
See stars.
Fantastic place!
The reception was very good, the room was beautiful and very well equipped and the breakfast was delicious. Very good value for money.
This is a unique guest house. Top hospitality and delicious breakfast. Our dinner was Karoo quality.
Beautiful old house. Lovely bedding. Tasty breakfast. Will definitely stay there again.
The breakfast was excellent.
It was like stepping into a time capsule.
Truly a special house and location. Beautifully furnished in original antique furniture, service was outstanding. One of the best guesthouses we have ever stayed at.
Bethulie Guest Farm was the most pleasant surprise. From the friendliness of the hosts to the old world décor that really took you back in time. The farm house is quite old, but still has all the modern amenities that you need. They make an amazing, delicious breakfast spread. They are a working pecan nut farm. You can buy some pecan nuts from the mini bar. Our son really enjoyed the impromptu tour of the young ostriches. We would definitely go back.
5th time we've stayed here on the way to the Cape, and every time our experience is top quality!
Everything was great, from the reception to the greeting! Breakfast was excellent! Felt like being on a farm, yet so close to town. Next time more than one night!
The house is a an original Sir Herbert Baker, with furniture to complement the period (including a four-poster bed). Lovely local hospitality, and lots of books and telescopes available for guests to use. An excellent breakfast to top-off the delightful experience.
Nice old house, interesting collection of antiques. Lung licorice. Swimming pool for tired bodies in hot weather.
We had a wonderful stay in this extremely spacious house full of exquisite furniture and other decor, surrounded by a farm yard with all kinds of animal life.
Very good service, delicious breakfast. They have a generator so no problem in load shedding.
Enjoyed the old farmhouse and beautiful furniture, nice overnight stop.
Very friendly and inviting upon arrival. Very 'feel like home' atmosphere.
The guest house is very neat and has large spaces in the rooms. People were very friendly and breakfast was definitely worth it. It is definitely a good place to spend the night between the Cape and Gauteng.
Great little gem. Highly recommended.
We slept at Bethuli Guest Farm on Christmas Day. We arranged in advance to use their kitchen and prepared our Christmas dinner there. It's a beautiful place and an ideal place in between to stop on the way to your final destination.
The service is extremely great with very friendly service. Our room certainly had the nicest bed I've slept on in a long time. The breakfast was amazing.
Rooms are very spacious and we had a great stay. Alex, the manager, made us feel very much at home and we had a delicious breakfast. The dogs on the premises are also very calm and create a warm, homey feeling. He recommended the Ou Kar restaurant to us for dinner. It was also a pleasant surprise that we enjoyed.
What a little gem. Can't wait for our next trip.
This is a wonderful renovated old mansion, with the most amazing collection of antiques in very good condition and on route between the Cape and Johannesburg. Good service and a very nice environment. Nice Palatine hospitality and tranquility.
The lovely old farmhouse has been beautifully appointed with period furniture and is well looked after.
Our stay was a very pleasant experience in the quiet just outside Bethulie. We experienced peace and tranquility. We are so grateful that our host called us earlier in the morning to ask if we would like to enjoy dinner as well. It was definitely a good choice to say yes. There was a proper hanging out with the food, which was served in style. The included breakfast was also an absolute winner of a buffet breakfast. Want to go back to this place again.
Nice old house with a very good host. Breakfast was excellent and the price very reasonable.
One can squint at all the beautiful things in and around this gem. It's very clean and the rooms are spacious and so neat. You feel like you are visiting old friends. Kobus carries a person on his hands and was a dream host. What an experience to sleep over here. The food exceeded all our expectations. Nightmare is magic in that kitchen! One night in Bethulie is definitely not enough.
Bethulie Guest Farm offers great value for money. It was nice in the middle of our journey between Pretoria and Wilderness. It's about 5km from the longest road/rail bridge in the country that was built over the Orange River - I suggest taking a trip there at sunset when you spend the night at Bethulie Geust Farm.
Beautiful place with excellent breakfast. The rooms are spacious with beautiful contemporary furniture.
We were very pleasantly surprised by the house and our accommodation. The house is beautifully furnished in a Victorian style, rooms are air conditioned. The guest farm is located just on the outskirts of the town. Unfortunately the town appears to be very rundown. I cannot comment on the breakfast as our travel schedule required an early departure.
Do not hesitate. Book here immediately. This was not just a place to stay overnight but an amazing experience. The food was out of this world, the sunset over the Orange River incredible and the hospitality on another level. We listened to some beautiful music on the piano, we sat and spoke for ours over drinks. We will be back at the drop of a hat. Thank you Kobus for a memorable night.
Warm welcome, beautiful house, neat facilities.
We had a lovely stay at Bethulie Guest farm. Kobus went out of his way to make us feel welcome. Beautiful rooms! Will definitely stay there again!
We had a great time with Kobus and other guests. The house is beautiful and very tastefully furnished. Breakfast was delicious! Kobus we enjoyed your hospitality and good food so much! Hope to see you again soon.
Ideal unique stop between North and South. Bethulie also has her own reasons for stopping there.
Staying at Bethulie was more than just a place to rest your head. It was a time travelling experience. We loved the authentic decor and genuine hospitality. We were served a delicious breakfast and all at a really reasonable price. Thank you for having us, we will definitely come again!
Totally loved this stay. The house was easy to find and was absolutely wonderful - I think that sumptuous might just cover as a description of the rooms. Kobus was an excellent host and made me feel at home immediately. And breakfast is included in the price, not an optional extra. I can really highly recommend as stay here and will certainly return one day.
This stunning old house took me back a an old era. I could imagine how they entertained in the spacious entrance hall and formal clothing were demanded for dinner. A piece of culture heritage where I was able to share in.
We slept very well in the guesthouse with antique furniture. The host was very friendly and we immediately felt at home. Breakfast was delicious. By far worth it to sleep over there. Very safe and peaceful. Super clean and neat.
We received a friendly welcome. The house is beautiful! The facilities were perfect. The breakfast was heavenly!
Probably one of the best B&B's I've ever stayed at. The decor is beautiful and the house almost looks like a museum. Attention is given to the smaller details.
It was a wonderful guesthouse with the friendliest service. Good value for money, the food is fantastic, you feel safe, it's very peaceful and a real experience. I'll visit family in Cape Town more often just to sleep at this guesthouse!
Lovely night rest after the long road.
I really enjoyed my night's stay and only wish I could have stayed a few days longer. It was so welcoming and peaceful. Time for the cellphone to be turned off and just relax in luxury. Not only is the place beautiful, but the company was fantastic and the food was amazing. I highly recommend it as a stopover between Cape Town and Johannesburg.
Wonderful, historic guesthouse. The host made us feel welcome the first minute. Lovely stay and rest.
We enjoyed the stay very much. The rooms are beautiful and clean. The breakfast was also very nice. Sonika is very friendly and helpful! We will definitely stay here again if our route passes Bethulie!
Accommodation that includes everything: excellent service, stylish decor and good value for money.
The accommodation is interesting and the host, Kobus is a pleasure at the end of a long journey. We were provided with dinner, on request, and it was excellent.
On arrival we were warmly welcomed. The rooms are spacious, clean and beautifully decorated. Even better the beds are very comfortable, even for a very large man like me. Sonika is definitely an asset to Bethulie Guest Farm and has ensured that everything runs smoothly. She is a wonderful hostess and quickly makes everyone feel comfortable whether you are young or old. The breakfast was also excellent and worth it.
What can we say, Kobus. What a beautiful place and, yes, we want to single you out for the fantastic time in Bethulie. The house is one of the best we have used if not the best. The owners do an awful lot to preserve the place's authenticity and make your stay exceptional. We really can't think of anything that went wrong and the friendly dogs welcome you every time Kobus. This is not a guest house or hotel, Kobus makes it your own home with a butler.
Guesthouse's interior decoration is truly exceptional. Room is well equipped. Friendly hostess and breakfast was very good.
I would definitely like to visit here again!
What a find! Sonika welcomed us and made us all feel very much at home and phoned a restaurant to tell them to expect us for dinner. The house is beautifully furnished from the reception to the bedrooms and is spotlessly clean and comfortable. Will certainly stay here again when we are in the area. Loved the dogs.
Enjoyed our stay, beautiful facilities.
The atmosphere of this beautifully furnished old house is really something to experience. We had a friendly reception and Sonika's service was very good. Don't miss out on the place if you stay in Bethulie. Thanks again.
One of the most beautiful sleepovers just a short distance from the N1 with country hospitality and definitely your home away from home! Lovely spacious rooms, a delicious breakfast and good conversation let you extend the visit.
Many thanks to Sonika. We were kindly received and dinner arrangements were in place. Lovely clean, cozy and very nicely decorated rooms. We're just sorry it was so short, would definitely recommend Bethulie Guest Farm!
Beautiful and neat accommodation in Bethulie. Beautiful rooms with very nice furniture.
Friendly reception. Beautiful accommodation that is very stylishly decorated. Delicious breakfast.
Second time I stay overnight at Buthulie Guest Farm on my way to the Cape from JHB. Nice luxurious room with fireplace for the winter cold. Then nice to travel on back roads to Gariepdam after a delicious breakfast and then take the N1 again.
Our tour ended in this gem, it truly surpassed everything. All change that can be done is that the gate is mechanized. Alex thank you very much for your kindness and helpfulness with everything we asked, We know you may only be there temporarily but you are an asset to the place. Thanks for the privilege of sleeping over there this weekend.
Phillip was an excellent host who, despite tick fever, welcomed us kindly in the beautiful guest house and served us a delicious breakfast.
I can highly recommend Bethulie Guest Farm.
When I think of Bethulie Guest Farm, I also think of Sonika. Please give for Sonika a special Christmas bonus this Christmas season. Sonika, your kindness and hospitality made me want to stay longer. Your advice about the sunset on the DH Steyn Bridge, dinner at Die Ou Kar and meeting you arranged for me with the legendary Trudie made my getaway weekend the highlight of the year's adventures. I still wonder about the mysterious pink dress in my room, would like to meet the woman of that dress one day.
A beautiful, characterful house in peaceful surroundings. The rooms are spacious and comfortably furnished. Sonika exudes friendliness and quickly makes you feel at home. The breakfast she serves is delicious.
Peaceful Bethulie beauty.
We were greeted with a picture-perfect sight when we arrived at Bethulie Gasteplaas at dusk on 27 August 2018; lit homestead and boundary walls. Friendly sheepdogs at the gate and hostess on the porch awaited us. However, our disappointment was great when we had to learn that the room with the fireplace in which we had booked, and received confirmation, had been allocated to other guests. We communicated our disappointment with Lekkeslaap and a few days later we received an email from Bethulie Gasteplaas apologizing for the misunderstanding and offering to refund us the full amount. However, we chose to spend the night with them again for free on our return trip, because our only complaint was our disappointment about the fireplace room in which we could not spend the night. Breakfast is served from 8 o'clock, but since we wanted to drive for 6 o'clock this morning, September 6, 2018, we told Sonika last night that we would not use breakfast. However, she texted us this morning before 6 to say our takeaway breakfast was waiting for us in the lobby. Bethulie Gasteplaas offers truly warm farm hospitality.
We were warmly and kindly received. The manager painted a good picture about the history of the house. The breakfast was delicious. It was no trouble for him to help us with personal arrangements. He was also well informed about what was in the area. Recommended restaurants and places to visit. Will definitely go back again.
Sien sterre.
We only spent one night here. The room was clean and tidy. We were particularly impressed by the architectural style of the house.
We really enjoyed the historical nature of the guest house and the service was excellent.
See stars.
The house is beautiful. Wooden floors with decor to match the style. Restful. Philip is an excellent host.
Philip was very kind and the guesthouse is unbelievable!
Great and stylish accommodation, heaps of hospitality with a personal touch like we've never experienced at any guest house. We will definitely stay there again.
We were greeted at the car by deut Phillip and he carried all our luggage down and took us to the best room in the historic house. When we walked into the kitchen we caught the delicious aroma of the lamb stew he was preparing for dinner. We then toured the entire house and admired the beautiful Sir Herbert Baker designed home, furnished in style. We also heard the history of the house. After a rest he called us for dinner and the food was very tasty prepared. The fireplace crackled cozily. The highlight was when Phillip tapped the hot tub for me and I was able to relax wonderfully in the hot water. The breakfast was very interesting, just too much! While we waited for breakfast, we warmed up in front of the fireplace with the most beautiful crocheted blanket thrown over our legs. Thank you very much for the special attention we received. It was special!
Couldn't have asked for a better host than Philip. And the owners were just as hospitable and friendly. Be back soon!
What a surprise! We can recommend it for a sleep over or three, even if it means a short detour from the N1. The host is friendly and the accommodation is the best. They see to small details that differentiates the place from other places.
No one has to be wary of booking a stay here. It is beautiful and really neat. To top that the hospitality is top notch.
Bethulie Guest Farm is an experience. The original woodwork inside and comfortable room was very special. Beautiful view from the veranda, friendly service and delicious breakfast definitely made this a remarkable experience.
Will definitely sleep here again.
Signs indicate "die withuis" and not Bethulie Guest Farm.
We were very warmly received by the owners, Wayne and Riana and they made us feel right at home. Will not get better in Bethulie.
Rooms have beautiful linens. The fire in the fireplace was just too delicious.
We enjoyed the accommodation a lot, the guesthouse was clean and neat and the reception very friendly. Thanks, Jan and Marinda, for the hospitality. A pity we didn't have any hot water in the main bathroom over the long weekend. Will definitely visit again.
The hospitality was excellent, but the bed was outdated and the open toilet in the room didn't do it for me. Breakfast was no waffles at all.
The rooms are very spacious and nicely furnished. The service is excellent and luggage was dropped off in the rain! I can fully recommend this guest house as an overnight stop and will definitely stay there again. Dinner can be ordered from a restaurant in town but was cold and didn't quite know what to expect. It's better to eat at one of the two restaurants in the town itself.
Wonderful little town, and by little I mean little. The people of the little town is what makes it what it is. Had a wonderful stay at Bethulie Guest Farm and the owner took us to the local pub that has delicious food and always entertaining characters to chat to. Definitely advise this as your next stop over.
It was a wonderful guesthouse, the old historical building is beautiful, the facilities are big and clean, and everything outstanding! Johan is a great host, he met us at our car and went out of our way to make us feel at home, recommended restaurants and sights in Bethuli. I can really recommend the place. Again, thanks for everything.
The rooms are spacious, very neat and the breakfast good. Johan is a friendly host and has a lot of information about the area. Would return.
We had a friendly welcome. It took us back to the old days with all of the antiques and ornaments, big and spacious rooms and wooden floors that creak when you walk. We will definitely make it our yearly stop when we go on holiday.
Photos on the internet can be deceiving, but here we were very pleasantly surprised. The place is pretty and the facilities were really beautiful. We can definitely recomment this guesthouse.
Beautiful rooms and friendly service.
The only thing I think can be improved is the time breakfast is served. If you are not staying over you must be told upfront what time breakfast is being served. There are not many breakfast options in Bethulie.
Very hospitable, pleasant overnight accommodation.
To stay in a Herbert Baker designed house is truly special. It is more private than Gariep Dam. Each room is stylishly furnished and also has aircon. The open plan bathroom is not ideal, but the owner plans on changing it. We ordered dinner and even though it was tastily prepared, the cost was a bit excessive. We as a family will stay here again.
We travel to the Cape every year - and it is the fist time we stayed overnight at Bethulie. Please remember to do a proper signboard as we were looking for the board. It still belongs to the previous owner and hasn't been updated yet, we had to travel up and down to find the house. Your dog is such a beautiful and friendly chap. Well looked after guesthouse - cannot say anyting negative.
Despite this stop was planned as a neccessary break into a long driving trip, we keep this place in mind for a future use! I think there is more to discover in this region!
The house is beautiful and the accommodation was very nice, but a few things here and there need attention, I'm sure the owners will sort it out soon. I look forward to see what the new owners are going to do to beautify this place. Johan was the perfect host - he prepared a delicious breakfast. Will definitely book again!
Very nice stay.
The attention to detail is very special. Daleen is a very good hostess. We stayed in many places on our tour and it was good to sleep on a good mattress and to have a functional shower.
The house takes you back in time and has a lot of character.
Thank you very much for excellent service. The house is beautiful and the hospitality we experienced was outstanding. The double room is very comfortable and luxurious.
Lovely. Sociable.
The place has character and takes you back in time. It's a must for people who like beautiful architecture - it's a unique experience.
We were very well received and made comfortable by the host and hostess. They made an effort to see that we could enjoy dinner at a restaurant even though it was a holiday and had to be specially prepared. Breakfast was tasty and no effort was spared... we will definitely stay there again.
It was lovely and felt like home.
Whitehouse Guest Farm is a beautiful, clean mansion with a heartbeat, and a very friendly host and hostess who are happy to share their knowledge of the area with you. It is rounded off with a tasty breakfast before you drive on. Thank you very much!
Well maintained and pleasant stay.
Beautiful house with spacious rooms.
Our short visit was very pleasant, and Daleen went out of her way to bring us a packed lunch for breakfast (because we had to drive very early). We would recommend that they build a pool - Bethulie is a very hot place!
