Blesfontein Guest farm

The guest farm has 10 unique self-catering units which used to be old buildings on the farm. The stone units are all basic but offer the necessary facilities and amenities for self-catering. Some units have communal kitchens but each unit has its own bathroom and most have an indoor fireplace or a braai outside. Each unit has been categorised to suit all individual travellers needs.
Dinner and breakfast are served on prior arrangement. At night, visitors have the option to go stargazing in the armature observatory. During the day the freedom of the farm is to be enjoyed. Guests can bring their own 4x4 or hire the guest farms to take a scenic drive to the view point at the escarpment. Here guests may see blesbuck, zebra, springbuck, grey reedbuck, steenbok and black wildebeest, not to mention the meerkat family, the tortoises, the skunks and several bird species.

I chose a particularly wet weekend for my visit to Blesfontein, but it was still a special experience. Nicol and Marina are excellent hosts. The entire area was without power for about 24 hours, but still they made an effort to make sure that the WiFi stayed up, that guests could charge necessary equipment, that everyone had gas equipment and light, and that everyone was comfortable. Fireplaces provide heat and furthermore there is the incredible tranquility, safety, natural beauty and for the energetic, various activities.
Incredible experience. Owners are extremely hospitable. Ideal getaway if you are looking for silence in nature.
Excellent stay.
Blesfontein Guest farm is beautiful, the accommodation is clean, comfortable, well equipped and the hospitality of the host and hostess, Marina and Nicol, is extremely pleasant. Sunset at the escarpment viewpoint is a must. We also had fun swimming in the farm pond. Would love to go back in the winter time to stargaze.
Great hosts, good food and gratis stargazing.
'Rustic' farm visit in a breathtakingly beautiful place.
The bathroom of house no. 5 does not smell good. Look at the outflow of the water. R160 for a chop and chips is way too expensive.
Was so nice and peaceful, clean air and people are so friendly and helpful. My dad and I will definitely go back and stay longer.
We spent a lovely time on the farm. It is incredibly beautiful on the farm. The host and hostess went out of their way to teach us what was happening on their farm and nothing was too much trouble for them. Feel free to go stargazing on this farm, Nicol can tell nice stories and likes to share his knowledge about the stars.
Thanks for a great overnight stay, won't easily forget. Stars and moon look through the telescope - what an experience. A visit to the escarpment is a must and make your mark by packing a small pile of stones and remember to take your location when you go back for the next visit.
Everyone was excited to be able to go stargazing with Nico. Put all our vanity into perspective.
Cannot get enough of the openness and beauty of the farm. The owners are real people and their staff are well trained.
Nicol and Marina are hospitable and very friendly. Stargazing in the evening was a highlight and you just realize your insignificance once again. The peaceful farm life with chickens that wake you up in the morning and even the teenager never complained once that she was bored. I would definitely recommend the guest farm and will definitely come back for "peace and tranquility".
Very warmly received and welcomed by Marina and immediately and fully informed about all the activities on the farm. We had a great time and stay. Electric blanket was a bonus. When you turn off the main road to Sutherland the road is a challenge, but doable with our Suzuki S-Presso. Thanks for the tip on the best route. The stargazing session with Nicol was so informative. Drive and view from Eskarp for sure worth it. Feeding lambs and interacting with alpacas was unique. Good luck to you there on your "fat spot" in the Karoo. Never knew you had a flower season too, would love to experience it.
Since it was just me and my companion, we chose the rondavel. Very suitable for 2 people, but 4 can sleep here. Our stay at Blesfontein far exceeded our expectations. The 4 km drive to the escarpment is absolutely worth it! A fantastic view of the Tankwa. Nicol's free presentation of the sky was very good, more intimate and better than at SALT. Highly recommended. The road between Sutherland and Blesfontein was only "rough" due to the very recent rains and washouts. A 260 km Sightseeing Circle Route that includes the Ouberg Pass, Tankwa Nature Reserve and Gannaga Pass can be driven comfortably within a day.
Nicol and Marinda are very friendly and make you part of the farm with all its activities.
I was impressed by the genuine warmth and hospitality of Marine and Nico who made us feel very welcome. We were blown away by the views from the top of the escarpment, which is a must-see. I loved all the farm animals, the horses, alpacas, and resident cats who are all very curious and friendly. The farm boasts the best spring flowers I have ever seen. A bit disappointing that we never had more time to explore the farm due to poor weather and our short stay. We will be back to experience the night skies and do some walks around the farm.
There was no wood available in the unit to make a fire. It was not clear how much the crate of firewood would have been, had I fetched it myself, while the prices of all other consumables were shown on pricelist on fridge. There were no dishcloths available in a self-catering unit?
Friendly, genuine, fantastic stay. Loving people, down to earth.
One of the, if not the best view from the escarpment.
Beautiful farm life full of healthy animals, 30 mm of rain with thunderstorms, beautiful sunsets and one night over a short period saw all the beautiful stars. For our first visit to the Karoo, we brought a lot of rain with us over the 3 days we were there, but every moment it rained we enjoyed the farm, the smell of rain coming, the sound of thunderstorms, the various cloud, sky and landscape colors had been breathtaking and at night there were periods when we could see the stars in between the various rain fronts that came in. All the farm animals were friendly and funny to watch all day. Nicol and Marina were very kind to us. We will definitely visit the farm again.
Nicol and Marinette received us warmly and made us feel very welcome. There is a lovely farm atmosphere with zebras, alpacas, horses (big horses and a little pony that keeps up too cutely when they run), chickens, geese, dogs, cats, a springbok and even Peppa the (big) pig. I might have forgotten something! The sheep were still on another part of the farm. And the flowers! People, they do not stand back for Namaqualand, it is so beautiful! Watching the sunset from the escarpment is a fantastic experience. It overlooks infinite mountains and the Tankwa. Then Nicol has his star talk and we looked through the big telescope at Saturn and many more, it was very interesting. We also saw other wildlife while driving around the farm.
Children did not want to leave. They enjoyed the animals on the farm so much. Stargazing in the evening was a highlight! Nicol and Marina are great hosts. Thank you very much for a wonderful visit!
Marina and Nicol are incredibly friendly, the house was comfortable, tidy and the fireplace helped to keep out the cold from the snow. The stars were amazing.
Had a great time and will definitely be back.
Nicol and Marina went out of their way to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Stargazing was special and interesting with Nicol. The sunrise and the sunset are beautiful from the plateau. It was a pleasant experience.
Upon arrival, you think: "What have I gotten myself into?" But with every minute the place grows on you. The ancient way of life, the clock that stands still, the owners who share all their knowledge with so much love! Nicol van der Merwe who hand-picks you to learn about stars. To drive away from there, you leave a great longing behind. The only truth is, you'll want to go again!
Hendrik and Rinkals spoke highly of their experience with you, it was very instructive and informative for them. They were also very satisfied with their stay, Rinkals said (as the teenagers speak) it was "legit".
Nice for kids to experience the farm, very good star-gazing experience and good hospitality.
Very hospitable and in a peaceful environment. The Stargazing session very nice - all on one premises.
Marlene welcomed us and quickly made us feel at home. The farm is a must-stop-over place. Soon you are swallowed up by the beauty of the farm and tranquility and you just regret not sleeping more days. Stargazing world with the open sky and fresh air. Would recommend anytime and go back for a few more days.
Baie aangenaam! Beslis aanbeveel.
Nice walking, cycling and farm life with good stargazing and information and very friendly people.
It was a wonderful place to stay. We will definitely go again. There are many animals to see, and the owners are very friendly and hospitable.
Typical Karoo experience with incredible hospitality.
The owners are very friendly and helpful. The accommodation is clean and tidy. Nice breakfast. The swimming pool is a winner and the Alpacas too cute! Would stay there again anytime.
Very friendly service. Stargazing is worth it.
It was one of the best weekends of the year for me. Blesfontein will see me again in the future.
A must for nature lovers.
Thanks for the nice visit and talk about the sky. Had a great time in the old farmhouse.
Wish we could have stayed longer here and listened to the stories of the stars and the stories of the animals they lovingly take care of. The view from the top of the hill over the Ceres Mountains is even better than Gods Window. We hope we can visit you again.
Had a great time. View is special. The owners go to great lengths to make you feel welcome. Would love to come back.
Was warmly received. Slept warmly. Everything was neat and clean. Marina went out of her way to make us feel at home as well as to come and show us the new chicks. So appreciated. Nicol made the star gazing very interesting. We sat warm under blankets and enjoyed it very much. Driving to escarpment is a must. We'll definitely see Blesfontein again. Definitely recommend it for those who love quiet farm life.
We had a fantastic stay at Blesfontein. We were initially a bit uncertain about the distance from the town with the gravel road, but the versatility of Blesfontein surprised us. We spent more time on the farm. Cycling, game viewing, farm animals and breathtaking vistas ensured incredible accommodation. Nicol's stargazing sessions in the evenings were also informative. The breakfast is very nice and the staff friendly. The cottages are clean and tidy and the braai/fireplace in the cottages is perfect for winter evenings.
We enjoyed everything from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. I particularly enjoyed feeding the Alpacas and driving up to the escarpment to watch the sunset - highlights of my weekend. Our hosts were friendly, the breakfast and dinner provided were yummy and bountiful, and the stars were just gorgeous to look at. I will definitely be going again.
Marina and Nicol were the perfect hosts. Our stargazing experience with Nicole, and his wonderful sense of humour, will never be forgotten.
Lots to do, great horses, people, the pond's water is very refreshing. Plenty of room to jog, walk, the stars are special.
The farm is located in a fantastic spot (although the gravel road in areas not good). The hospitality, stargazing and view from the escarpment worth the effort. Will for certain be back.
See stars.
Call endroit. Mais le Rondavel n'avait pas d'eau chaude à cause d'une fuite. Pas facile quand il ne fait que 3°C la nuit.
Visitors should only be informed about slippery road if it has rained. Had a great time.
Friendly owners and comfortable accommodation. View of the Karoo breathtaking! Telescope extra bonus! Very nice time among the stars and planets.
We were not so lucky with the weather and couldn’t see the stars, but everything else was very nice. Our hosts were very welcoming and involved us in some farming activities, like helping a newborn alpaca. Even being busy, they made time for us. The place is beautiful, far from the city and we liked it! Having the animals around us was also a nice experience, especially for the children. Awesome view at the escarpment at sunset time. Good food. A birthday for our daughter that we won’t forget now that we are back in France.
The stay was very enjoyable for the whole family. The children really enjoyed interacting with the various animals on the farm, from the meerkat to the horses. The views from the escarpment is breathtaking. There is opportunity for various levels of mountain biking from rough jeep track to easy dirt roads. The accommodation had everything we required.
See star-rating.
I really enjoyed it. Will come again if I'm in the area. The quiet and the stars make it peaceful for someone to recharge. The host and hostess make it warm and welcoming with the farm animals. I enjoyed my chat with Nicol as well as the stargazing.
Nice and quiet between the ground and the stars, switched off from the hustle and bustle of life! The stargazing was special and we had so much fun, the aunt and uncle are incredibly friendly and go the extra mile to make the children feel "at home"!
Very neat units. The conversation about the stars and the stargazing was definitely the highlight of the experience. Will stay there again when possible. Will recommend it to others too. Thank you for the hospitality.
Was top shelf for real farm life, children really enjoyed swimming in farm pond, horse riding and feeding lambs. Star gazing on the farm was very instructive with Nico. Just dirt road to farm lots of corrugated iron.
It was a home away from home. The farm is stunning and the hospitality was real.
The owners, Nicol and Marina, do everything possible to make their guests feel welcome. We experienced a wonderful sunset at the "lookout" point on their farm and thoroughly enjoyed the evening under the stars in Nicol's company. We will definitely stay there again, this time in the winter!
What a great experience, clean and neat accommodation. We learned so much about the stars and gained perspective on our insignificance in the greater universe. Strongly recommended. Thank you also to our host and hostess.
We will come back for the stars and company in the dark about things that are bigger and further than we can ever think! In daylight the farm life is nice with the animals around every corner! Marina and Nico are wonderful hosts and we can just praise them for such a wonderful establishment!
This is the 2nd year we visited Blesfontein, and it still remains the most beautiful place in the world. Marina and Nicol are the friendliest people you will find and nothing is too much trouble. They will definitely see us again next year!
Blesfontein is one of the most beautiful places that I have ever been. The farm is perfectly situated. Nicol does a stargazing night with you when you stay there. The rooms are beautiful. Blesfontein will see me again before the end of the year. But this time I am staying longer.
Wow, this is a jewel! We had a lovely stay and Nicol and Marina are very hospitable. The stars was unbelievable and Nicol told and showed us some fantastic things about the sky. It was a n unbelievable experience to see all the different stars and planets through the telescope. We really enjoyed it and can't wait to go back! There a lot of different animals and we had a nice jog to the plateau. The view of the Tankwa is breathtaking. Would definitely recommend it.
Very good, excellent value for money, very friendly.
We had a great time on this real Karoo farm and there is so much to see and do. Star gazing with Nicol was such a highlight and the horse ride was also very nice. The kids had so much fan in the dam and they helped to feed the lambs. The road is a bit rough but if you have a bit of patience it is definitely worth it. And they spoiled us with a huge farm breakfast! The few days we spend there was so special.
We had a great time at Blesfontein and looked at the stars.
This guesthouse offers the ideal accommodation to influence anyone's perception of the Karoo. The Roggeveld offers so much to see and if you're on the escarpment you can look down on big parts of the Tankwa Karoo. Accommodation completely satisfied our needs and we could even look at the stars through the host's telescope. This is the ideal place for those who want to fully experience the Karoo.
I am in a wheelchair and this farm had a wheelchair room.
We had a great time and you are very friendly and helpful people.
The host and hostess make a lot of effort to make you feel at home. The lecture on the stars by the host is an absolute must and was the highlight of my visit to Sutherland and surrounding area.
For someone interested in stars, this is the ideal place to spend the night. The owner offers a special stargazing session for visitors, which is very interesting. The approximately 26 km dirt road to the farm is in fairly good condition, but not suitable for hunting devils.
See star rating.
On arrival we waited for more than 5 min for someone to come and help us at reception, a young man who was there informed the housekeeper and she took us to our accommodation. We also had to sort out the gas stove ourselves and pay for braai wood which was not discussed with us in advance. The farm animals are at a pile of "scrap metal" at the back of the accommodation, which is not pretty to the eye.
Nicol and Marina simply went out of their way to make you feel at home and to help. Our vehicle broke down in town. They came to pick us up and were prepared to take us back to town the next day where we could get transport back to the Cape, but then it snowed and the pass was closed. Nicol didn't hesitate to take us to the bottom of the pass so we could get on other transport to go home. And the way he presents the "stargazing session" is also very interesting and to be recommended. The view at the escarpment was fantastic. Here we go again!
Accommodation is part of an old barn. Roof is made of reeds, right next to the area where the sheep are dipped. Bedding and curtains are made of the same material, nothing matches, and the upholstery seems to be coming out of the beds underneath. Was extremely disappointed.
Will recommend it to anyone!
The accommodation was spacious and comfortable, with every necessary amenity. The owners made us feel at home and Nicol's star performance impressed everyone, even the kids. The kids really loved the animals and feeding the lambs. It was an incredible experience to go jogging on the farm.
The hostess is welcoming and helpful. She let our boy help milk the lambs. Excellent stargazing facilities. The accommodation is 'rustic' and peaceful. Nice indoor barbecue for bad weather. The view point has the most breathtaking view of the Tankwa karoo and is definitely worth the effort. We will go back again for sure.
The goal of our visit was to switch off after a busy period. The peaceful farm atmosphere and lovely, comfortable accommodation made this possible. The little house where we stayed was extremely clean, very comfortable with everything that we needed for our stay. Marina and Nicol are excellent hosts for their guests. We will definitely go and visit again.
We had a nice stay, but I just think future guests who drive regular sedan cars should be warned if the condition of the dirt road is poor.
The owners went out of their way with their hospitality and time for their guests. The clean air, sitting on the escarpment and topping off a stargazing session through a telescope was more than we expected. The horses, chickens and birds also made you feel at home. In summary: take the road to Blesfontein and see where lies Karoo beauty, fresh air and beautiful people. Would we go again: definitely!
Als was great. Will visit again!
Very nice stay. Convenient and comfortable. Real people-people.

This is the most spacious unit on the farm. It used to be the communal kitchen and restaurant dining room. There is a double bed, twin beds and a double sleeper couch. The unit has a bathroom with a shower and a separate toilet and a large inside braai area.
