Set high on the slopes above the village, 800m walking distance from the beach and the lake below, Boardwalk Lodge Self-catering is a lovely lodge and popular retreat situated in the tranquil seaside village of Wilderness on the famous Garden Route. The lodge’s innovative design, exclusive features provide the ultimate Wilderness experience.

The accommodation comprises lovely self-catering units that can accommodate between 2 to 4 people. Each of the units is furnished with comfortable beds, and offers a full bathroom, a fully equipped kitchen, as well as a beautiful lounge area with spectacular views of the ocean and wilderness village below. Each unit also offers a TV with selected DStv channels, as well as Wi-Fi access, and guests have the option to choose a unit with either a gas fireplace or a gas braai, while some of the units are equipped with both.

Blending into the backdrop of beautiful indigenous forests and overlooking the Indian Ocean and surrounding lagoons, the lodge is built on a forested slope with stairs to reach the various units.

The area offers a variety of activities such as horse riding, fishing, bird watching, cycling, paragliding, game drives, game viewing, guided walks, mountain biking, and swimming.

Climbing of stairs will be required to get to the studios or chalets, you must be physically able to do so. Please check each room specifically to see the amount of stairs to climb. The lodge is not wheelchair or disabled friendly.

"Beautiful sea view!"

The Studio 4 room was beautiful with everything you need. Upon arrival, the friendly porter immediately came to collect our bags and help us up the 40 steps. Unfortunately, the air conditioner worked very poorly and did not warm the room.

"Just getting better and better!"

We love coming back to the Boardwalk every time. It is certainly the place with the best service, the most beautiful view, the most beautiful clean and tidy cabins. Wesley and Matilda's standards are high, but they stick to them and it's a great pleasure to work with them. Wesley was always available on WhatsApp to chat with us, even if it was early in the morning or late at night. We might ask if it would be possible for electric blankets on the beds, because the cabins get very very cold in the winter, especially on rainy days. We can't wait to return. You guys remain tops and our favorite getaway spot.

The stairs were good exercise, but absolutely worth it (people who struggle with knees etc. might think twice). The service was great and helped immediately with any problems or queries. The WiFi was a problem though, and for the price I feel they should sort it out.

Everyone wants a cottage by the sea, and Boardwalk Lodge gave us that privilege for a short time. The sea view is breathtaking with the crashing waves lulling you to sleep at night. Long white beaches are walking distance away with many restaurants in the area. The mattress on the other side was old, worn, which compromises the value for money a bit, but I will definitely visit again.

Beautiful surroundings in a very safe area. The drivers went out of their way to help and make our stay as enjoyable as possible.

"Boardwalk" was most accommodating when a change of accommodation was requested (150 steps to 40 steps to the front door). The number of steps should definitely be mentioned in the advertising. It would have been disappointing if alternative accommodation was not available.

We had a wonderful time at Boardwalk Lodge. We would love to go back. The stairs through the trees created a wonderful feeling of living in a treehouse! The service was fantastic - probably the best communication I have ever received. Practical things were in place such as a gas stove and kettle during load shedding. The view was breathtakingly beautiful! 10/10!

"It is incredibly beautiful and the unit fantastic. The load shedding and many stairs were a problem."

There were over 200 steps to the unit which is not recommended for people over 55. There were people to carry our bags up and down but the rest of the time we were on our own. With load shedding, the stairs were not lit and we had to get flashlights for the exercise. However, the view and the unit are unbeatable. I would recommend a gas stove. With load shedding we could not even make tea and had load shedding 2 to 3 times a day.

Nicely close to town, but far enough for peace and privacy. Only positive criticism is cupboards in Studio 4 a bit high for short people. So if you don't want people climbing on your furniture, don't bring glasses down. Excellent service. Even running out of gas late on a Friday night.

Wow, what a view. Yes, you work hard for it, but as long as you have the knack, you should try this. The cottage was very comfortable, and had everything you need for self-catering, including a gas Weber and a daily cleaning service. The on-site restaurant is top notch and a must, and you'll share a ten for one lunch with the Knysna peeps! Despite the climbs and steps, it's still very easy to walk everywhere, it's close enough to everything in town and the beach. Definitely recommended!

If you are looking for accommodation in Wilderness with an amazing view of the beach and town, you won't find better than this. The customer service was just so good. The team is available 24 hours a day to help and advise regarding activities in the area. We will definitely return!

The "suite" is very stylish and neatly furnished, with beautiful art on the walls and a particularly nice bathroom. The view from the balcony is very beautiful over the western part of Wilderness and beyond to the other side of Victoria Bay. All that is missing in the place is salt and pepper.

Excellent place with friendly helpful staff. View magnificent. Accessibility for older people not good. Very steep steps which meant that every time you needed something you had to get into your car to drive to the nearest shopping complex. The breakfasts were good but unfortunately no variety. Every day the same.

"The best booking we've ever made."

We stayed at the Broadwalk Lodge for 7 days in peak season. We were always kindly assisted with all our requests. On Christmas day we even received a gift from the lodge. We couldn't have asked for a better unit. It was spacious with an excellent view. Facilities in the unit were luxurious and provided more than what we needed. We will definitely visit the lodge again when we are in the area. The night before we left, we asked if we could entertain our family and an area was prepared for us and cleaned up again. It was definitely special for us. The days when the beach was full or closed, we could use the pool which was an added bonus for me. It was an absolutely wonderful experience to stay here. I was also almost fit with all the stairs.

As advertised the Boardwalk Lodge will take you over the roofs of Wilderness and you will be able to enjoy the amazing view over this town towards the ocean. Very private, generous space, all kitchen equipment for self-catering.

Our guesthouse was beautifully equipped and had everything we needed. The gas fireplace worked wonderfully and also the heater in the room. We were well treated and very comfortable. The view is wonderfully beautiful from here and you could properly see the whole Wilderness area. Would not recommend our stay for guests over 55 years old as the stairs are really steep. However, we enjoyed the exercise. Our vehicle is parked within the guest complex and was safe under conditions. Wilderness offers plenty of restaurants and places to visit.

The experience at Boardwalk Lodge was much as expected by others' reviews. The view over Wilderness is very beautiful, as well as our houses, 1 bedroom, no. 11, was more spacious than we expected. Lovely big dining area as well as a really big TV room area with gas fireplace, very nice outside deck, but maybe they should consider a bit of an upgrade on the set of chairs outside. And yes, the stairs that everyone warns you about, they really are. Fortunately, we were well prepared for it and it was not an issue for us in any way, the location of the house completely overcomes the fatigue of climbing the stairs.

For sure one of my favorites to date! The accommodation is just beautiful! Private (which we kind of always want) with each unit standing alone. The stairs to our unit were quite rough, especially if you have a lot of heavy luggage. We did stay in one of the highest units, but there are units that are not that high. Despite all the stairs, we are not complaining at all, because it was the most beautiful view! The linen was all pure white and clean and everything you needed in the kitchen was there! Boardwalk Lodge was also within walking distance of all the best restaurants. You will definitely see us again!

150 steps are nothing, because when you reach the top the view is just breathtaking. Me and my husband thoroughly enjoyed the private weekend away. Excellent service and despite all the steps all our needs were met, even extra ice delivered to our house. Beautiful, clean, with everything you would need, if only you manage to force yourself away from the beautiful view from the deck.

Lovely, large self-catering units with wonderful views of the town and ocean. Well equipped with friendly staff. A few small things were broken but nothing too serious.

We stayed here for two nights as part of our honeymoon. There were a lot of stairs to climb, but when you got to the top the view makes it worth it! My fiance and I quickly fell in love with the place and its beautiful view. Will definitely return!

View from the website was delivered for real, fantastic. Chalet had all we needed, although thin towels were a let down in an otherwise high quality resort. Staff always at the ready to help. Info pack on resort and area was appreciated.

The position of the houses located on the slopes of the Wilderness hill is excellent. The units are wonderfully spacious and well equipped. It is a pity that the reception and cleaning services are not in the same category. Much of the equipment is old and needs to be replaced. WiFi and television did not work, as well as the gas grill on the deck. One certainly expects a better service for the cost of the unit.

The rooms are spacious and modern. There is everything you need to stay a while longer. The location is great and walking distance from the main town. The hump back is just a bit steep, but the view is totally worth it.

"Poor service, but nice view."

We are dissatisfied with the poor service. (They didn't clean room twice.) So we ran out of toilet paper. When I called the first time (15:30) reception gave an excuse that they thought we were sleeping, but we weren't there and we didn't put up a 'do not disturb' sign which would give rise to their reason. I requested that they clean the room and the manager said that the staff had already left the premises. We did not receive any clean towels one day. For a 4 star place this is not good service. At least they gave us a discount (R100). Reception did not always answer calls. They were also 2 times late to open their kitchen for breakfast (which should have been 08:00), so we just went to have breakfast at Wimpy. Room is neat but we paid too much for what we got (R15k for 2 people and a baby, for a one bedroom room for 7 nights). I would have thought half the cost would have been fair. View was nice, except for highway. We will not be coming to Boardwalk Lodge again. Just too expensive for what you get.
