29 guests' feedbackWe had a lovely stay and would love to go back.
The rock cottage at Bokkraal Waterfall Valley was lovely with absolute privacy and a beautiful location, surrounded by huge trees and shrubbery. Hiking trails are great and the waterfall was beautiful to see. If you want a relaxing stay without any distractions or technology, this is the place.
We enjoyed our stay, the views are spectacular. We stayed in the Bokkraal Waterfall Valley and were tucked away in nature with an awesome natural pool. The main bathroom in the house could use some updating.
Again a remote place away from everyone and everything. Lovely view, surrounded by trees and a babbling stream, silence, wow, thanks again. However, can I offer some constructive advice? The place needs TLC, some attention, and clean utensils are a must.
Good break from city life. Totally off the grid. If you want to break away from television and your cell phone and soak up what nature has to offer then this is the place. Think of it this way, you have your own cabin on the mountains next to a river and waterfall. There is no sound pollution, only nature in her fullest beauty. There are hiking trails where the path guides you through wooded forests next to the river and then to open areas that have spectacular views of the valleys and surroundings. You might even see an eagle gliding in circles as the warm air escapes the valley. After a good walk, a dip in the pool above the waterfall is the perfect ending. I do recommend that you go with a 4x4 or alternatively a high-rise vehicle. The roads are challenging if you are not used to gravel roads. There are natural undulations and therefore your low-level vehicle might get damaged. Side note, the tar road from Swartruggens has not been maintained by the municipality in years resulting in many potholes. The caretaker and his family were welcoming and helped wherever they could. They even brought us some mielies from the farm.
Our visit was absolutely wonderful. Lots to do and away from everything. One thing you need to have there is an off-road vehicle to handle the roads. I will recommend this holiday area for everyone that wants to break away from technology and just enjoy nature.
Nice, quiet environment with breathtaking scenery.
We got hot water and cellphone network coverage was perfect.
The entrance to Bokkraal is not clearly marked but the owner kindly accompanied us to the stone house where we would stay. The problem is that the place's water pipes and donkey for hot water are not maintained. When we arrived there was water leaking from the donkey and we could not draw hot water in the bath at all, the water that drew from the cold tap was full of rust/dirt and also flowed very poorly until it ran out. The next morning we tried again to turn on the donkey to draw hot water in the bath but still no hot water came out, only cold water. However, we could get hot water in the kitchen so the problem is definitely the maintenance as it is clear that there is a lot of rust (sediment came out of the taps). The owner offered to see what the problem was but we had already decided to pack up instead as this is the type of problem that needs to be sorted out before guests arrive. The cottage is beautiful and in a forest with a steam running past the cottage with a coal stove in the sitting room so it is definitely a perfect getaway for a couple who wants to be alone but unfortunately the lack of regular maintenance has weekend soured for us.
Awesome for a couple that wants to do some work on their marriage. The unit has the bare minimum, no electricity, no cellular network, has a camping freezer, gas stove and donkie for hot water. If you don't know what a donkie is, it may be not the place for you. Hiking trails are great, the Tufa Waterfall is beautiful. Wood cabins looks more upmarket but maybe not that quiet with a noisy neighbour. We fully enjoyed our time at the Rock Chalet.
We had stayed there before so it was a shock to us to arrive and see how the place had deteriorated. There was a terrible bad smell in one of the bathrooms. We then realized that it was the toilet that smelled like that. There is no real water running through to the toilet - the water drips behind the toilet onto the wooden floor (which was already soaked from the water) The one room cannot be locked from the inside. Sunday morning the power was off and we wanted to use the gas bottle. It was empty. There were still many small things but maintenance will definitely need to be done. Won't go there again.
The atmosphere was peaceful.
Peaceful, quiet, isolated. Very nice!
Bokkraal Waterfall Valley is a beautiful, unspoiled destination for the nature lover with plenty of birds, lovely waterfalls and swimming that can be done in the river. There is a large variety of butterflies to be seen, from the fat old Monarch to the tiniest, loveliest little grey ones with tiny little pinprick dots on their wings. For the young, fit and energetic there is a not-to-be-missed 12 km walk (or 7 km for the not so young and fit) through the valley. Or you can go horse riding if you bring your own horse. Our accommodation was in a wooden chalet near the Tufu waterfall. The chalet was clean, comfortable and functional with a beautiful view from the bath and from the veranda. On the down side; on arrival we had no water in the chalet. The next morning, when we got to see the owner (a very friendly guy) he had the water turned on again. Problem was, the water pressure is so weak that it was impossible to shower and it took about half an hour to get 5 cm of water into the bath. On Sunday morning there was again no water in the taps and we had to fetch water with a bucket from the next chalet if we wanted to use the toilet, or make a cup of coffee or brush our teeth. I think visitors should be warned that the roads on the farm are best suited for 4x4 transport, especially when wet. If a bit of bundu bashing and a nice, quiet time is what you are after, I think you should go for it at Bokkraal. If the water problem can be sorted out, this can be a perfect place to unwind for a weekend or longer.
We stayed in wooden chalet 1 and were very impressed with the accommodation. Got plenty of water on the long hike which was refreshing.
We enjoyed it very much. The chalet is pretty with everything one needs.
Even though it's a pretty environment and we believe that a person can have a good time there and walk around in nature, it was an nightmare for us as a family. On arrival the place was cold and had a bad odour. According to them we were upgraded, because the house we were meant to stay in had sewage problems. However, the carpets in the one we were allocated to were wet and there was no warm water for us to take a bath. We had to drive back to the owner to ask for assistance with the warm water. The geyser wasn't switched on and the switch is outside up high where we weren't aware of it. After 2 hours we still didn't have proper warm water and we were forced to put our children and ourselves cold and dirty into bed. There's only one blanket per bed and a light duvet even though it was extremely cold. They asked us why we didn't bring heaters along, but we weren't aware that we had to do that. Also nobody informed us that we had to bring our own blankets and duvets. All they mentioned was to bring our own towels. Before we made the booking, we emailed them to find out what the condition of the road was since my husband had a heart operation and couldn't handle rough terrain. Needless to say, the road was worse than worst and a terrible corrugated road. Not to mention the road to the house. We let them know that we were going to be late, since we could only leave after work and it would take a good 5 to 6 hours to get there. The gas bottle for the stove also didn't work and we had to ask for gas as well. The owner assured us that the gas bottle wasn't empty, but it didn't work when we tried to use it. According to us the bottle was empty. My daughter could pick it up with one hand. Very disappointed in the attitude of the owner and the lady working with him. My husband asked her whether she thinks we're complaining unnecessarily, and she replied with, "I'm staying out of this". The next morning the man pitched up again to hear whether something else was wrong. My husband informed him that we won't be staying a second night and would rather find other accommodation in Zeerust since we didn't want to sleep in a cold wet house again. He sarcastically replied saying that we should feel free to go to another place at R7000 per person per night which might meet our requirements. I don't think it unreasonable of us to be upset with what we had to put up with. There is a big coal stove. Since you knew that we were going to be late, make a plan to heat up the house a little bit before your guests arrive. My husband spoke to the man the morning before we left for the accommodation. Why didn't he inform us then that we had to bring enough warm blankets to make our stay more comfortable? It was also the first time that we had to be in the area and we were really disappointed with what we got. We also paid our accommodation in full in advance and regret it now since we didn't receive the value for the money spent. It's the last time that we make such a mistake. Rather just pay the deposit then you won't lose sou much if you cut your stay short.
No plugs, one pot and two pans, fridge warmer inside than outside, no microwave oven!
We will visit again!
The perfect place for a getaway from everything and everyone. Nature at its best. Hospitality from management and owners are wonderful.
Quiet and in nature. What more can you ask for?
Cabinets in wooden chalets are necessary and they need some maintenance work, other wise everything you need is to your disposal. If you like nature, this place is paradise.
Just found the road was bad for a regular vehicle and ad doesn't mention there is no cell phone reception, but otherwise it was very peaceful and walking tours very nice.
Unit we stayed in had ceiling fans, but they didn't work. Otherwise everything you need is there and it is spacious and comfortable. Beautiful area, we already booked for 8 nights in the school holidays.
Vacation was very nice. The nature is picturesque.
Everything was beautiful, just needed a woman's hand. Maybe closets for clothes in the rooms. Arend was very helpful, will definitely visit again.
The wooden chalets are very cold in the evenings, but will be lovely in the summer. But it's beautiful and very neat.
Don't expect 4-star or 5-star. Natural people go to stay comfortably and relax. Nice view. We really enjoyed it and had a great time. Place a little bit of a woman's eye and an oven will definitely be a recommendation. We enjoyed nature. Don't know if there are fish in the ponds because we haven't even had a bite and you can't see any movement of fish.
The chalet we were in is by the pool and braai area. The area was taken over on Sunday by people from the area without us as guests having a chance to use it. The day before we had a leisurely stroll around the pool. It was noisy and left the rest of the peaceful weekend with a slight aftertaste. I feel guests should know in advance that they are staying right at a public area, if I had known I would not have booked the place.
