Don't be put off by the condition of the old town of Winburg, which is sad to see. The guesthouse itself is secure and well run. Only thing to be aware of is that there are no functioning restaurants anymore in Winburg for supper. There are two takeaways but we didn't use them so can't comment.
Just a pity the restaurant has closed.

The fact that Winburg is a small, very quiet town is definitely a negative for the guest house.
Our first stop of our trip. Lady pointed out our parking space, it was not near our room. After that she took us to our room which was spacious and tidy with only a bath. However, the room was on the first floor of a very old building and the stairs were so narrow that only half of my foot fit up them. My wife and I, both 78 years old, then had to struggle up those stairs to get into the room. We started to think that maybe we shouldn't have made the trip.
Winburg is a good overnight stop for travelers from the Cape on their way to the North or vice versa. The Bougain Villa Guesthouse is a beautiful historic building and offers a safe and friendly atmosphere in a quiet rural setting.

I would definitely recommend it to travelers for a place to stay that is affordable and safe with good service along with it. Just one recommendation, replace the curtain between room and bathroom with opaque material.
Neat with everything needed for a good night's rest. Hot shower, coffee, small fridge and winter sheets. Slept cozy and warm. The guest house is located close to the main route with secure parking.

In the Free State, and this guest house is super nice. And the staff family too - just about everything about it. So, guys, if you want to stop over like we did, stop here. We will hopefully be back! We found our accommodation very pleasant. The women's bar on the same premises is a winner, especially if one can order meals that the staff will pick up from the supplier. The security parking is adequate and sheltered. We only had a problem with the operation of the TV which was not serious as we were pretty tired after the long day on the road.
It was a wonderful experience for me to spend the night at Bougain Villa Guest House in Winburg. The room was very neat with air conditioning as well as TV and bathroom facilities. It was my first time in Winburg and it's a beautiful little town in the Free State.

Value for money. The restaurant at the guest house doesn't exist. Warn prospective guests, no alternative restaurants are available in Winburg. The lighting in the rooms are weak. Can't read. Would've like channel 144 and 101 on TV.
After day driving one looks for quite place and good nights test. Safe parking for car and friendly staff.
Winburg's location is good if you are looking for a stopover that allows you to drive a good distance from north to south (and vice versa) before another long distance the next day. The town offers the basic services, but most close at sunset. The torrential rain that hit us on the way there caused water to leak into the double room where we slept, but it did not cause any significant inconvenience. For our purpose, viz. to sleep over after a long day on the road, and before we hit the road again early in the morning the next day, it was sufficient.
Very disappointing, we booked this 1 night, overnight accommodation, as a resting place on a long journey especially as it was advertised with a restaurant, just to find upon arrival that it has been closed since 2018. We had to travel out of town to a Game Ranch to have a sit down dinner as it is the only place around other than takeaways. Had to go search for someone to book us in and although the rooms were fairly decent, the bathrooms had mould and the staff not too friendly. Will not use this establishment again.
The people are very friendly and you feel like family that you have known for years, even if it is your first visit. Rooms are extremely neat and stylish. Really value for money! Thanks, enjoyed it and will definitely come again!

The guest house is probably the place to stay if you're in Winburg. It is central, comfortable, and the service is friendly. The restaurant however needs attention - my steak was perfect. My wife's chicken was very poor.
Very accommodating and understanding. Managed to change our room last minute, helped us move in swiftly. An ideal spot to stop by when travelling in SA. Could be improved with heater in the room especially when very cold - but we were provided with ample bedding to warm us up.

I was stunned and I rate this as one of the best guesthouses I've ever stayed at. I travel a lot by motorcycle to small places and sleep over. Winburg and the guesthouse now take the no. 1 spot. The owner and wife are absolutely present and have fun and chat with the guests. The guesthouse dates back to the 18th century and is beautiful. On the premises there is a nice pub with outdoor seating area, I will definitely visit again in the summer. Please visit the guesthouse, you will surely be surprised, and do not miss Winburg, it's a beautiful clean place with a lot of history. It was nice to brush shoulders with young farmer boys and farmers as well as Winburg residents and share history. I give the place 10 stars. See you soon again.

Great reception. The staff were so friendly and tried their best to make us feel at home. But we feel we they should have let us know beforehand that there is an issue with the electricity and that it has an effect on the water. We had to climb wooden stairs to get to our room. We are senior citizens and we didn't get any help with our luggage. My wife struggled to ascend the stairs. And because of the power issue the food wasn't ready. We don't blame the staff because the circumstances were not under their control, but in future we won't stay at the same guesthouse.
Meals of a very good standard. Bar has a bad smell of smoke, but too cold to sit outside. Then sat down in dining hall. Place is very tasteful and interesting.

We stayed at Bougain Villa Guesthouse for a night when my husband had a triathlon race at Aldam the following day. The room was a little small, but otherwise well set up and clean and tidy. We were given great service, and really enjoyed both our dinner at the restaurant during the evening, and the breakfast pack we were given because we had to leave before breakfast the following day.

Bloem was just to far so we stopped at Windburg at 19:30. Half an hour after the warm welcome by the host lady we were treated to a delicious meal, and the rest of our accommodation was also very good (1 night). We love guesthouses in small towns and we can really recommend Bougaun Villa.

Oasis for the long road with neat and comfortable rooms that have been beautifully restored. Off street parking behind locked gates. Delicious meals in small in-house restaurant. Friendly staff, very helpful. Breakfast included and if you want to travel early before breakfast you get a breakfast pack with you. Would love to stay there again in the future.
Convenient place to stop outside of Jo'burg. The room was all that we needed and we were made very welcome. The evening meal was one of the nicest steaks for a long time but the red wine could be warmer for my taste. Would recommend to anyone travelling for an overnight stop.
The guesthouse is very neat and the staff (the owner even received us) went out of their way to be hospitable. Just a pity that the guesthouse is advertised with breakfast (included). On our way to Windburg I was told that breakfast is only served from 08:00 to 10:00. As we were overnight guests we couldn't wait till 08:00 for breakfast. We were the only guests in the guesthouse (5 people) and the owners could have catered an early breakfast. They did give us breakfast packs the previous evening though, consisting of a brown bread sandwich with a frankfurter and yogurt. I really think that if we are only 5 people and only stayed overnight, they could have provided breakfast at 06:00 (we left at 06:30). We paid for the breakfast as advertised knowing that we wouldn't have to buy breakfast on the road then.

The young lady at reception was very friendly, and also when she personally served us a wonderful dinner at great value for money, and in a quaint, intimate, little restaurant. The room is dated but very clean with fresh white linen on the bed and loads of cupboard space. The bathroom was 5 star - classy. One small negative was that there was only 1 towel in the bathroom and one bar of soap which had been used by the previous occupants. However, on pointing this out to one of the maids working in the kitchen, there was nobody at reception at the time - the shortages were replenished. I am sure we will stay there again.
We arrived on Sunday afternoon, rang the doorbell and no answer. We had to wait outside the place while we called the owner who in turn contacted someone on site to let us in. We were not welcomed and were requested to pay the balance owing before we were shown around. Our room had only one towel and was not made up for two people. Breakfast the following morning was cooked, no cereal or baked goods, no choice of how would you like your eggs done. Bacon was stone cold and fat congealed! Not at all recommendable!
What a surprise to find such an old renovated house when you enter. Rooms are comparable to any 4 star hotel. Delicious food.

Place was clean and tidy, the room is stylishly furnished. The accompanying restaurant offers very good value for money. The menu offers choices for everyone's taste. You can't go wrong if you want to spend the night here.
The rooms' decor is themed and very tasteful. The guest house is very neat, clean and comfortable and has an old world feel. It would help if there were reading lamps in the rooms with bright bulbs for those who don't watch TV. We arrived in the early evening after many hours on the road. Although the restaurant was closed (Mondays) the staff did not hesitate for a moment to prepare for us from the menu. In fact, they insisted on it. I have to make a special mention of the sparkling young girl who exudes friendliness ─ she is an asset to the guest house.

Good guesthouse. clean and comfortable room. The optional evening dinner was very good and affordable. But the breakfast was skimpy with one fried egg, a sausage that wasn't good either, baked beans and one slice of bread. No options offered. Service was unfriendly without any words spoken. This downgraded my rating of Bougain Villa Guesthouse.
Very tidy, the hostess and her staff were very friendly and they make an effort. The guest house gets full marks! We used the facilities at the restaurant and had a great time. The food was great. Definitely going to visit Winburg again. Thank you for allowing us to spend the night there.
