Lovely neat and well equipped place to stay. A treat for the soul and flesh after a long day on the road and border post. Rooms are beautiful and well equipped and air conditioning and roof fan are available. Public area has swimming pool, boma and large dining room where everyone can relax.
This was a very nice place for us. Unfortunately only slept over one night on the way to Botswana. I would like to spend two to three days here to relax. We booked the dinner and the food was very nice. We will definitely stay here again.

The accommodation we were provided at the retreat was outstanding. Pool was clean. Waterhole near accommodation attracted plenty of game - kudu, eland, nyala, impala, warthog and lots of birdlife. Braai facilities excellent. Staff we met were excellent, courteous and helpful.

We were in a pinch and needed a place to stay for a wedding. The whole Buffalo Thorn team was so accommodating and friendly and helped us in a flash. With nature on your doorstep, you can't help but take in the beauty of the forest. And the fact that they are so close to the wedding venue was the icing on the cake. The next morning we had the most delicious breakfast before we had to take the drive back to JHB. We are so glad we came across Buffalo Thorn and will definitely be back for a longer period of time.

My wife and I chose Buffalo Thorn as a place to stay overnight before heading to Botswana the next day. It's close to the border and the chalets are such that you don't have to worry too much about unpacking etc. not. It is a comfortable and easy place to stay overnight with a clean kitchen/bathroom and bedroom. The braai is also welcome if you would like to braai or cook yourself.
I would recommend it to any person, personal or business purposes. Comfortable and tidy accommodation, will stay here again.

Milton and Chef Janina are top quality. Their friendly service, helpfulness and food made us feel very much at home.
It is full of bushes even around the houses. They need to ensure that there are no rodents crawling inside the chalets. We had to ask for towels, they don’t replenish stuff.
Physical manager and chef very helpful, but that's where it ends. The admin staff unfortunately unprofessional, unhelpful and not up to standard for a 4 star lodge!
Our booking was for 2 Delux Chalets. However, we were accommodated in an old house, which did not have all the necessary facilities. The change of accommodation was not discussed with us. The breakfast for R100 p/p offers bad, 3 strips of bacon, 2 eggs and a toast. Which is not value for money. The accommodation and amenities we were exposed to are not up to 4 star standard as advertised.
I booked 3 units for 3 couples and then I got an old farmhouse that we had to share.
Milton the Lodge Manager helped us so nicely and even offered to carry our luggage. The chalets were incredibly clean and tidy and even more beautiful than the photos. Anne and Allen showed us so well where everything was, what to do or not to do and also came to warn us when the hunters were out that we could only go for a walk in a certain place. Smiles were definitely one of the most beautiful welcomes. We are already planning to go back.

I booked a family room for 2 adults and 2 children (11 and 7). When we arrived at the lodge they only prepared one room for us with a king size bed. I then spoke to one of the staff managers and mentioned that this was not what I had booked. They then gave us a second room, but the two were not against each other at all. My husband and son then slept in one room and my daughter and I in the other, around 100m apart. Not really what I had in mind for a weekend away. The children really enjoyed their time there throughout the day and were able to walk around comfortably without feeling scared.
This is a great place to get away from it all and rest. We spent a lot of time in the plunge pool and just relaxed. There was not a lot of animals at the waterhole but we did see Nyala, Eland, Jackal and African wild cat. Danie also took us on a Game Drive which was very enjoyable. We stayed at The Retreat previously and would highly recommend it. We self catered, but meals are available if booked in advance. It would be an advantage on the website if you could select which unit you wanted to book. Our Unit 5 had an outdoor shower which bordered on the car park which was not ideal. Other units had their own plunge pool which is more pleasant and convenient. We had to use the boma plunge pool which, while very pleasant, was not as convenient. We still had a great stay.

I would recommend this lodge to people looking for a place to stay the night; whether it is for travelling or attending a wedding nearby. Just take a lot of mosquito repellent!
We had a comfortable one night stay at Buffalo Thorn Safari Lodge. It was easy to find right off the main road. The chalet was well equipped although we were only supplied with one portion each of coffee, tea and milk. The lodge is well situated for the wedding we attended at Bordeaux Lodge.
Elize, Danie and their staff made us feel at home from the moment we arrived till the day we left. They made sure we were always taken care of and made it really special for my daughter on her birthday. I would highly recommend this establishment for anybody who wants to unwind and relax. The rooms are spacious with great views and everything is geared towards you relaxing and enjoying nature. The breakfast and dinners were amazing and Willard and Milton made sure we were taken care of for anything we needed. Thank you for an amazing experience!
Stayed briefly on our way to Botswana and was even received after hours. Would recommend it. I should have booked in advance for dinner, but it escaped me and there is nowhere else to buy food quickly so would recommend bringing food or booking dinner in advance.

After a long day on the road, Buffalo Thorn Safari Lodge was an oasis in the dry winter forest. The chalet is stylishly furnished, comfortable, beautifully clean and tidy. The animals that were fed in front of the chalet and came to drink water were a bonus. We were generously received and sat down to a delicious dinner with generous portions and the service was unbeatable! Next time we will definitely visit longer than just an overnight stay on the way to Botswana!

Spacious accommodation that is well equipped with everything you'd need and more. Lovely, peaceful atmosphere and it's safe here. The only negative was that I paid in full and was asked to show my proof of payment twice, which might mean that there isn't great communication between Buffalo Thorn and the website. Other than that the service was good and they have friendly staff.
The accommodation was excellent as well as the food. However we where very disappointed with the game drive. There is no game to view. Game can only be seen when they feed them in the afternoons at the lodge. Other than that we did not see any game on both game drives.

We booked three chalets and only got one family chalet with two double beds in one room for the same price as three chalets. When we pointed it out, they were only told that nothing could be done about it, without regrets and discounts.

We were received very late in the evening with open arms and kindness. The unit we stayed in was modern, neat and comfortable. We would have liked to stay longer to explore the beautiful grounds more, but unfortunately our travels did not allow it.

My husband and I enjoyed Buffalo Thorn Safari Lodge a lot. We were treated well by staff and owners from arrival till departure. It is a tranquil lodge where you can rest and catch up with your soul away from the busy life. We had delicious food with dinner and it feels like you are visiting family on the farm. We were also able to walk in the veld everyday. Will definitely come back again and bring our friends and family with us.

We really enjoyed the stay, the view from the porch and bedroom over the feeding area for the animals is excellent, many photos were taken from the porch. The facilities are highly recommended, will have to stay longer next time to take advantage of everything. The dinner of cooked plate food was delicious. The protected covered parking is very neat and it was good to get the car and trailer out of the sun. I can confidently recommend this lodge, will definitely stay there next time we pass through Martins Drift.

What a pleasant surprise Buffalo Thorn Safari Lodge, aka Blinkblaar-wait-a-bit, Lodge! From the friendly reception and integration by Milton and his able assistants, throughout the stay to the farewell, nothing could excite our family. From your porch you can watch a variety of plains game less than fifty yards away. If you walk out the front door, the impressive herd of buffalo is right next to you and you can quietly watch them from the comfort of a viewing deck. The facilities vary from overnight facilities to a facility for large groups where a wonderful bushveld holiday can be arranged with all possible facilities. Barbecue and kitchen facilities are excellent, rooms spacious and comfortable and the bathrooms clean and equipped with complimentary toiletries. The lovely outdoor showers with decent sized shower heads deserve special mention. The website and photos of amenities really do not do justice to this particular accommodation. We will definitely go again!

This is the 3rd time that we used this lodge as a stop over to/from Botswana and it has always been up to 4-star standard. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The rooms have everything you need, especially the kitchen that has all the utilities you need, to the lounge that has very interesting books to read. This is a very highly recommended lodge for a weekend getaway or travel stopover, and well priced.

The booking we made - and as advertised on the website - was for detached units. Our unit was part of units separated by sliding doors. Not only could we hear every word the neighbors spoke, but their little baby woke us up crying at 5am every morning. There was only a wooden stacking door between the different units. This is not mentioned on the website. The units are advertised as detached. Misleading advertisement. The breakfast was very disappointing. The standard was definitely not 4 star as advertised. The cutlery was substandard and the breakfast consisted of egg and bland sausages with toast that had been made long before. Not 4 star at all. Extremely disappointing experience.
Looks like the place is on a game breeding farm. However, we are not informed about what the place has to offer. However, there is pleasant accommodation. The overnight accommodation is well equipped with a built-in braai area. Would prefer an open bushveld fire where one can sit and visit. We did not use meals, a bit expensive. There is a game feeding place in front of the chalets but we didn't see anything wild there

It's a beautiful and comfortable lodge. However, we were very disappointed with the breakfast we ordered. We only got two strips of bacon for 8 people which is totally ridiculous. It was definitely not enough for 8 people. The fruit juice also tasted watered down. When we inquired about it from the people who prepared the breakfast, they just shrugged and said that was all there was. The staff were very friendly, but not very helpful. Had to sort it out myself with the owners who were at least somewhat accommodating. I was in a very big embarrassment as I had international guests with me. So be very sure of what you will receive for breakfast should you ask for it. The faucets at the sink in the bathroom at the family unit are also a mess. You can open it neither big nor too small. It sprays water all over the place. The faucets are definitely not working normally. Furthermore, we had a lovely peaceful weekend surrounded by beautiful woodland.

The unit overlooked a watering hole and we woke up to game right outside our bedroom. Sorry it is so far from where we live as we would have loved to spend weekends there. We will definitely recommend this accommodation for at least an overnight stay, but stay longer if you can.

The place is lovely, but from the check in nothing was explained properly. All I was told was to ask the lady. The communication was not good at all because I had to ask more than once for dinner and breakfast, and never got breakfast and it seemed like as soon as we have dinner the guys will sit and start to change channels on TV. I asked to check out at 7 am but the guy was late. We had to phone him and there was a misunderstanding with the bill as I had paid R700 deposit which took longer because he could not understand when I showed him the proof of payment.
We were lucky to be the only guests for the first two nights - the bushveld silence and tranquility was wonderful and the accommodation was excellent! The best self catering I have ever used by LekkeSlaap for a very good price. We asked for dinners and breakfasts and the food was tasty and well served. The resort manager, Hamilton, is very accommodating and helpful. Highly recommended.
We arrived late at night and therefore experienced little.
Good accommodation if you pass through Groblersbrug the next day. But facilities look very good and believe one will be able to keep oneself busy for more than a day. Away from the city for a weekend.

House Rules
Guests, please note that late check-in after 20:00 will be an additional cost of R150 payable directly to the property.
Breakfast and dinner can be provided by prior arrangement and at an additional cost.
Please note guests arriving on Saturdays are permitted to book in at 11:00 am.
Children aged between 0 and 2 stay free.
Children aged between 3 and 12 pay 50% of the sharing rate.
Guests can buy wood at R20.00 per bag and firelighters at R10.00.
An inventory is taken the day prior to arrival and again on the following working day. If any items in the room, be it crockery, linen or towels are damaged either by sunscreen, peroxide or by any other means which permanently stains such item or if any item is missing, guests will be held responsible and be billed for the replacement of such items. Guests will be notified within 3 working days after check-out of such damages and the cost of replacement thereof.

This Retreat Overnight Chalet offers a king-size bed that is made up of 2 single beds and an en-suite bathroom.
R1 190R 1 190R 952Accommodation is available in 20 different units. All units have en-suite bathrooms. Some units have well-equipped kitchens or kitchenettes and a patio with braai facilities overlooking the waterhole.
The main building with its fireplace, lounge with a TV and selected DStv channels, Wi-Fi access, and dining room, leads out on to the spacious verandah, overlooking a waterhole. The verandah also leads to the swimming pool and boma, forming the perfect place to bring family and friends together around a crackling fire. The spacious, well-equipped kitchen also leads onto the verandah.
There is also a second entertainment area and boma. This entertainment area is well equipped with a bar, a TV with selected DStv channels, Wi-Fi connection and leads into a boma where communal dinners can be served.
The restaurant offers healthy breakfasts and home cook dinners for travellers and weekend guests alike.
