The main lodge central complex has a very large wooden viewing deck that partially extends over the famous Olifants River which is home to a veritable multitude of hippos, crocodiles, fish, and water birds.
The reserve offers a multitude of potential activities for guests including but not limited to, birding, self-driven game drives to view amongst others nyala, zebra, giraffe, impala and the many other game species that proliferate the reserve. For the fitness conscious, there are also several walking, running and trail running routes and a mountain biking route is also available.
The chalets and the main lodge have both reliable Wi-Fi connections and working areas which makes Bushriver Lodge the ideal venue for remote work. Guests can enjoy a sundowner on the deck overlooking the river.
Being centrally situated, Bushriver Lodge is the ideal venue from which to explore the nearby Kruger National Park, the Panorama Route, and the surrounding Lowveld. We were very disappointed in the whole business. We saw it as self catering but apparently there was a kitchen that we had to share but we didn't know about it. I can't imagine paying that much for just a very nice hotel room with a nice view. The nearest eating place is 17 km away. There is only a small bar fridge and kettle and 2 cups. Nothing else. Really hard to spend the night there. During power outage there was no light. There was a candle without matches. If I can compare it with the previous night's stay in Ohrigstad, which was a terrible experience for less money and breakfast included with just such a nice view, the place was poor. Sorry.
We rested very well and the veranda with a direct view of the river was the icing on the cake. The unit was neat. I think by just paying attention to a few small things, it will be able to get even better. Our room was not cleaned every day (even though it was advertised as such under the review). One roll of toilet paper for 2 people for 2 nights is a bit skimpy. The sound of the septic tank was quite loud when the tub plug was pulled out (not sure if anything can be done about it). I think the bar fridge can at least hold 2 water bottles, a soft drink and maybe a sweet treat. We wouldn't mind paying for it at all. The lodge is quite far from the nearest town and that would have made it just a little more convenient. A nice cushion for the chairs on the stoep would have kept us on the stoep even longer. It's only small things and was certainly not a 'deal-breaker'. We would definitely like to stay there again in the future.
Familiar with lodge, holidayed there years back and it was excellent. Unfortunately extremely disappointed. Definitely not 4 star. Thankful it was only for one night. The facilities are still good, but a lot of repair work is needed. Rooms were not clean to standard. I believe the new owners will certainly do more renovations and have plans to improve it. But currently for sure not worth the money.
