Staying at Calvinia Guesthouse for two nights was the highlight of the most amazing trip in the height of the Flower Season. We felt that we would have liked to stay for a week as the accommodation was not only clean, comfortable and quaint, but also right amid the most amazing flowers. Day trips to villages in the region were also very rewarding. The owner of Calvinia Guesthouse made our stay even more worthwhile as we felt as if we were 'family'. She went way beyond the requirements of an owner of a guesthouse. Her input towards our outings, the walk she took us on, her love and knowledge of the flowers in the Calvinia region and her amazing food was the cherry on the cake for us.

After many years of touring and staying in a large variety of guest houses and holiday accommodation, I unfortunately have to completely reject a place for the first time. We booked in advance and paid for our accommodation almost a week in advance because we stayed at several guesthouses on our tour. Maybe room 4 that we specifically originally booked looks nice as in the photos, but room 1 that we got felt more like workers quarters. We were also immediately advised upon our arrival at 4pm to get something to eat at OK or Spar and informed of the times they close. We wanted to braai, but there was other guests' luggage in the braai area and we had to wait until they came to collect it. At 19:15 the guests collect their luggage and leave there by 19:30. It was a little late for us to barbecue because we were already very tired after a long day of travel. The room's furniture, especially chairs, are not antique, but rather old and neglected. The room also had a faint stale urine smell that no deodorizer could get rid of. The entrance door is so low that I bumped my head against it 3 times (I'm 1.78 m tall so not terribly tall). The "garage" door is extremely difficult to open by hand and is actually a canopy with a garage door that cannot close either (make sure valuables are removed from vehicle). For the price, room 1 is absolutely not worth it and I hope other visitors have a better experience.
Friendly and competent hostess who immediately made us feel at home and even put the garage at our disposal. Very comfortable and cozy apartment with a lovely bed.

Take advantage of reserve and good cycling. Meals at Blue Naartjie excellent, museum worth close to Tankwa National Park and Blue Mountain Pass, as well as Ganaga Pass very special.
We had a lovely stay at Calvinia Guest House. The hostess, Talitha, was very nice and went out of her way to see to our needs. The cost was very reasonable and the room had more amenities than I expected. We stayed in room one, it is conveniently close to a nice barbecue place. It has a microwave, fridge, gas stove and cutlery. The market in the church hall was one of the highlights of our weekend, eating delicious pancakes and enjoying the rural hospitality. It is also worth visiting the museum.
Such character. The part where we slept was clean and had all the basic necessities. Hostess was friendly and accommodating.
My only negative comments are: (1) The entrance is at the "back" and not as in the photo. Old car debris is on the pavement very close to the entrance; it looks like a scrap yard. My immediate thought was, "what have I gotten myself into". However, when you go inside, you are pleasantly surprised - it's a spacious unit with beautiful old furniture. (2) The bathroom only has a shower.
