We had a wonderful sleep over!
Lovely big room with more than the requested number of beds inside. Air conditioning. I loved that the restaurant was on the premises. Clean linen. Coffee and tea facilities. No minibar. WiFi. My only criticism is the door locks, as they can still be pushed open from the outside. There are no doors in the bathroom area.
It was good. Rooms are comfortable and cool.

Just stayed overnight. Room was well appointed. Breakfast was delicious.
We had a great stay at Calvinia Hotel. The room had everything one needs for an overnight stay. Our particular room did smell of smoke. However, we understand that it is difficult to prevent guests from smoking in the rooms.

Breakfast was nice. Just wished I had more time to spend and explore Calvinia. Thoroughly enjoyed The Blue Nartjie and NG Kerk "Onse Mark".

We stayed in the family room and it's looking amazing after it's renovation. However, it is still a work in progress and should be finished by the end of May.

After first night form filled in about half blocked shower drain, almost slipped, no repair or refund until departure three nights later. Condition controls of TV and air conditioning sometimes work, reported. The small TV and limited DSTV channels can be left. Staff at reception and dining room friendly and helpful. WiFi service good.
Hotel is part of the Country Hotels group and is currently undergoing extensive refurbishment, therefore it is extremely difficult to give and accurate assessment. Accommodation was good but not finished. Our room had no mirror. Food as per group menu which was adequate.
The hotel room was very spacious, but the floors were dirty and the shower water was cold. Our room was right above the pub and deafening music played until the wee hours of the morning, until we complained. Disappointing that bar patrons' needs are put before guests, especially as it was just an overnight stop where we wanted to rest. The breakfast that was included was very nice.
As mentioned above, we only learned during the room showing process that the hotel is under repair. So we are in a newly renovated room, but the room has not been tested if it works or if something is missing. For example, the shower sprays as hard upwards as downwards, there are no containers in the shower to put soap or something like that, the sink doesn't have a mirror, the toilet leaks so hard that you wake up. 4 o'clock in the morning people arrived in rooms next door, and a lot of noise (loud knocking on doors with a shout for someone inside, etc.). Not a good experience at all for us and just wanted to get away next morning.
Not what I expected after the Calvinia Hotel was upgraded. A few things can be greatly improved under the denominator of a hotel.
Friendly reception but poorly or not at all informed about WiFi. Shower heads and shower and sink drainage poor and clogged - not cleaned in a long time. Parking gates were never closed during the night and you feel your car is unsafe. Location not ideal with a lot of traffic noise. Meals below average and poor service.
Calvinia Hotel is neglected. Paint shell off. Towels old. Very impersonal.
Doesn't look like much when you stop in the street, but once you're inside your first impression of the hotel changes completely. Nice people. Carrol, at breakfast, told interesting stories about the area.
There was construction taking place around and in the hotel and the place was dusty and unappealing. The carpet in the room was worn out and dirty. The experience was so unpleasant we only stayed one night even though we had booked and paid for two nights.
Attention should be paid to the little foxes that scratch.
The unit was big and spacious.
The hotel is old and could do with upgrading. The room was dark and very basic and in need of upgrading and renovation. Just a bath, no shower. No lamp shade around the light bulb in the bathroom. Old carpets.
Hotel was neat and clean and the food was very tasty. Rooms had been a disappointment. Rooms definitely need attention. Rooms felt dark, cold and impersonal.
The hotel is in a busy part of town and it doesn't exactly get quiet enough for you to rest well. TV didn't work well either.
Hotel tends to neglected. Poor lighting. WiFi very erratic. At dinner, the food supply was exhausted and only three dishes were available. The highlight was the very friendly member of staff in the breakfast dining room.
Water restriction in Northern Cape (no water in pool).
The staff were not very helpful, the rooms were not very clean, are outdated and the whole place needs an upgrade. Our air conditioner leaked into the room and after I informed the staff, no one even bothered to come check. I understand with the water shortage that the pool is not in use right now, but take that away from the ad.
The pics as shown on the website do not reflect the reality of the state of the establishment. Poorly maintained. Tidy, but not clean.
People friendly, hotel poor.
The photos on the website and the room itself do not match, small dark room, directions to parking and room poor, gets the feeling of a nursing home, everything in room dark and cramped. One simply does not feel welcome. I did not stay there and reported it by phone. I hope I get my money back.
The place is not at all what the pictures show. Sloppy and dilapidated and definitely not worth the price. I expect at least 50% back and have quite a few pictures if you are looking for them.

Very basic and run down. My bedroom window was directly on the street, but no burglar bars.
They claim they have a pool. It's been empty for more than 4 years. The family room has no WiFi reception. The staff are very friendly and try hard. The owners sell one thing, but what you think you are booking is definitely not what you get. Very weak. We are very understanding of the drought, but the group should not advertise something that does not exist and then charge a premium for it. The hotel is very poor compared to the rest of the hotels in the same group in which we stayed. They also did not respond to my emails at all. Very disappointing.
Stay was disappointing, we were kindly received by the receptionist but mentioned that we were leaving very early the next morning and someone would have to unlock for us. We are assured we can call the specific number and the person will come and open for us because we wanted to get in the way at 4:00. Needless to say, no one answered the phone and we couldn't get away until much later. The accommodation is not worth the money.
We really enjoyed staying at Calvinia Hotel. Friendly service, delicious dinner and breakfast, and neat clean rooms all contributed to this.

My husband and I stayed one night and found everything very comfortable and pleasant. The staff were friendly and helpful and the room tidy and everything was in working order. We enjoyed dinner and breakfast at the restaurant. The food was delicious although we were disappointed that there were no pies in stock.
The bathroom's roof is full of vapor and makes it feel dirty. The door is old, dirty and looks bad in comparison with the new tiles. The shower in the bath is very small. Th bedding was nice and clean. Breakfast was nice, but limited - you can't choose what you want, you just receive a plate of food.
First, they need trained staff, especially the day-to-day staff who have to make sure everything in the rooms are there and is in working order.
Bedding was yellow instead of white. (Age). Keys were given to us at reception but we had to find a room ourselves. No WiFi password was shared with us. Relaxation area is quite large with pool table. Breakfast was nice.

Then had me checked into the Hotel, but again in a large room on the outside. They should tell the customers that the rooms in the Hotel are fully booked and that they have rooms outside the Hotel, if there is no room. This will save a lot of confusion.
Nice stay. Feel that some upgrades could be done especially in the bathrooms. It appears primitive. Hospitable and otherwise nice stay.
First, we stayed in apartments behind the hotel. Our room looked like an office they were trying to convert. There was no security for our vehicles and anyone could open the roller gates. The beautiful swimming pool on the website would have been very welcoming after our 4 hour drive from Augrabies, but it was completely empty.
One of the bed lamps were dead and the water in the toilet runs constantly! We are from the Cape where we have to save water and it was quite uncomfortable.
We expected a little more. We had a delicious meal. The photo on the website is misleading.
The rooms are dirty (dusty and walls and roof are stained). The rooms don't look like the photos. They are also right next to a beer garden which means it's really noisy during the night. I will never recommend this place to any traveller.

The hotel is a good starting and ending point for the Tankwa Karoo Camino. Unparalleled customer service. They drove up to the Camino's first overnight stop to get my vehicle keys - the window was open. Thank you very much again!
The parking is safe and food was very nice, service is very good. TV channels may be increased as only 3/4 are available. Overall worth it and would go again.

We were just looking for a place to stay the night on our way back home. We had a welcome reception, it's just that the receptionists don't trust you. Before you are shown the place, your bill is shoved under your nose. There is probably nothing wrong with that, but if it were me I would first make the customer feel at ease and then pay the bill. There was nothing wrong with the room, but there was food on the menu that wasn't available, and, believe it, they didn't have ice cream.
Found it to be an oasis in the Karoo!
Calvina is an old town and so is the hotel. If you expect luxury and modern, the hotel is not for you. Certain sections are and look run down. But if you are willing to look beyond the surface and feel like getting more involved with the spirit and culture of the people of Calvina, this little hotel is definitely the answer. On Saturdays it is the meeting place for the young men of the area and we also visited with them for a while. People with hearts of gold! So in short - we enjoyed the evening in Calvinia AWESOME! And yes - the bed linen and towels are spotless and of good quality.
The rooms seem to be done ours and our friends were good, obviously there is much work to be done. The walk to the main hotel for meals is a bit of a schlep, but as it was the Vleisfees we were happy to get accommodated. Calvinia is steeped in history a synopsis of which is to be found in the hotel info book in each room. My only regret is that we did not have time and that it was a Sunday, to visit the places mentioned or the museum.
We had to walk between paint cans and cement bags to reception. Building is being renovated and there is no lounge or bar available. I paid the balance of the accommodation costs against my will, and there was no change. After payment we are informed that due to maintenance work we will be accommodated at their Tankwa Lodge. The Lodge was also then under the painting contractors and it was a dead building with no service staff. Dinner in the hotel's curtainless dining room was also below standard. The room we then slept in was barely big enough for a double bed, there was a Bible, but not enough space to open it. Calvinia Hotel dragged LekkeSlaap's name through the mud.

Calvinia is about 1000km from our home but well-worth the drive. It was nice staying there and next time we will definitely stay longer!

A nice country hotel with a cozy bar and delicious food in front of a warm log fire. The pool will also be a treat in the summer!
The service was excellent and the menu of the restaurant really catered for everyone's taste. We were able to eat delicious farm food.

After an extremely tiring journey due to road works, it was good to finally reach the hotel. We were received very well and immediately felt at home. The facilities completely met our needs and we would like to stay longer on occasion. We recommend that the shower curtain be made a little longer, otherwise you will slip on the soaking wet floor. Nice and clean overnight accommodation in the Karoo.
The staff were unfriendly, sour and unhelpful. The office lady complained endlessly about her computer not working. It wasn't my problem. The breakfast was sub-standard - a bland piece of sausage and 2 eggs that had already been cooked earlier. We did not dare to enjoy dinner.
Swimming pool a big disappointment. Dining room not very tidy and service could be better.
Reception was top had no problems. Rooms were clean and tidy. The ladies at reception went out of their way to make us feel at home. We were unsure of how to get to the Tankwa Karoo National park and the lady at reception on Saturday evening called around a bit to find out which road was the best to drive. We mainly had our meals at the restaurant at the Hotel. Food was of high quality and service was 10 out of 10. I will use Calvinia Hotel and its hospitable people again on my next visit to Calvinia. Service was top notch and we have no complaints.
