Grootplaats is a working farm consisting of merino sheep, angora goats and cattle. Experience the wide open spaces of the Karoo by wandering around the farm or visiting the game camps where springbok, kudu and blesbok roam.
Charlton House can accommodate up to 8 adults and comprises 3 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, and an open-plan kitchen, a dining room and bar area, and a lounge. The main bedroom contains a double bed and 2 single beds, and a shower en suite. The second and third bedrooms each contain 2 single beds, and share an interleading bathroom with a shower. Bath towels are provided.
The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering and includes a stove and oven, fridge-freezer, microwave, kettle and toaster. There is an 8-seater dining table and chairs, and a built-in fireplace to help warm you up during winter.
The north-facing verandah has a roof over it and an outside braai area, which is very protected from the most prevailing cool wind, the south-easterly. The view from the verandah is amazing, with the mountain ranges completing the backdrop.
There is a swimming pool right next to the main homestead, which is easily accessible should you want to cool off in the very hot summer days. Some guests even swim in the river, and there is a beautiful waterfall just upstream from the cottages.
Guests can go for walks, cycle with their own mountain bikes, drive a 4x4 track, and explore the farm. The star-studded skies are something to see, because when the nights are clear, it is simply spectacular. Your hosts, John and Judi Butterworth, consider it a great honour to be able to share the beauty of the Karoo with their guests.

3 guests' feedbackBeautiful location, comfortable with very hospitable people for whom nothing is too much trouble. Delicious leg of lamb meal and delicious Karoo lamb to grill. Nice hiking trails too.
House has everything one needs and more. Owners made us feel very welcome. Had a good time with the dogs and slept wonderfully warm, with electric blankets and fireplace. Can definitely recommend.
Charlton House offered everything I needed. Very peaceful environment. Was able to relax and have a good barbecue. The owners both went out of their way to make sure I had everything I needed and that my stay was comfortable.
