It was a lovely peaceful stay with Granny, Grandpa and the dogs. The place is situated right at the walking trails, bit of a walk to town, but drive is quick and easy. Nice garden for the dogs although the fence is a bit sceptical; if you have naughty dogs they might try to escape. All in all, we had a lovely stay and would definitely stay again. The 2 single beds could do with an upgrade - 1 is super hard and the other super soft. Thanks again.
We decided at the last minute to visit Clarens and chose Cottage Pie as accommodation. Only the Log Cabin was available of the 4 x units. Although the outside of the cabin looks a little tired, everything was neat, clean and comfortable inside. Cottage Pie is well located very close to the walking trails.

I would advise putting the geyser on in the morning before check-in or advising guests to put it on upon arrival.

The cabin was beyond our expectations and more than we ever hoped for. We were in complete awe with arriving and every day was such a unique experience. Karen was an amazing host during the entire process. As my first ever booking and travel plan, she was extremely helpful and understanding. She provided me with suggestions for walking routes and restaurants whilst load shedding was ongoing. Their location is isolated, and quiet, at a stream, situated at the edge of the mountain, the geese were amazing guard dogs and the housekeeping was friendly and reliable. The cabin was such a cosy and romantic breakaway for us. It was away from the other rooms. The location does not have electricity during loadshedding nor a gas plate, however, a gas heater was provided and housekeeping brought us boiling water in the morning during load shedding times. There is enough storage space and the bed was very comfortable (as someone with back problems, the bed did not put any strain on my back or body). We will definitely stay here again in the future!
I was able to take my dog to Cottage Pie and he had fun with the other dogs and geese. The owners were very friendly and helpful. Will recommend for a getaway.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Cottage Pie. Room was nicely prepared, and nice and comfortable. There were one or 2 small finishing touches that could be improved a bit, but it didn't detract from our stay at all. Will definitely visit Cottage Pie again.
It exceeded my expectations of a log cabin in the middle of winter in the Free State. I never met hostess Karen in person. She only communicated via WhatsApp. The bed was very comfortable. Electric blanket was a big plus as was the gas heater. The kitchen was so equipped that you could make food and coffee in the midst of loadshedding, which is a big plus. After a day of exploring and walking around, the log cabin was really a cozy "coming home" place to stay.
The Cottage Pie is a great place to sleep in a quiet environment and I would definitely recommend it.

Lovely little cottage stay.
You look out on nature and hear the water of the stream flowing all the time. It is safe and close to town if you need anything. Clarens is a beautiful town with many interesting shops and plenty of places to eat to choose from.
It had been wonderfully peaceful and enjoyable, the unit was clean and we had a lovely cozy sleep. Thank you, it was delicious, good value for money.

Beautiful location with very friendly owner. We traveled with our puppy and she really enjoyed playing with the friendly dogs on site. The house was also neatly cordoned off so she couldn't get out.

The cottage was neat and clean and located in a very nice place (not in the hustle and bustle of the town). We stayed in the upper thatched roof room, and we really enjoyed it. The photos do not show how beautiful everything is. We enjoyed it so much and decided to go to Cottage Pie every year. It was everything and more.
The establishment is advertised as pet friendly, but just make sure they have read the messages beforehand if you are trying to arrange for pets. They were surprised when we arrived with a dog and a cat. But the stay was still very nice. The wooden house sits at the foot of a mountain, and has a small garden in front, with lovely seating and a barbecue area next to a stream. The only thing that could make our stay better is if there was a gas stove as well. It was very cold the 2 nights we were there, and with loadshedding in the evening you really just want to be able to drink a cup of coffee. Furthermore, it was lovely, picture-perfect and very clean and tidy.
The place is located on the mountain, out of the town's harwar. It is quiet, clean and very friendly service.
Host is very friendly and helpful. Cleaning services are superb. We fell in love with the stream and mountain surrounding the cabin. Loved the fact that we had access to the Clarens Nature Reserve and got the chance to discover it.
The stay period at Cottage Pie was wonderful. The photos on the page do not show the real beautiful picture that the place is in person. The service was good and the room very nice and cozy. The only setback was the location against the mountain (although very beautiful) which affects the signal and the temperature (in the winter months).

Bathroom (small shower) needs attention, shower doors dangerously loose, sink finishing. Specially asked not to service the room for the 2 days but the room was still entered. No WiFi at all, no explanation.

The location of Cottage Pie cannot be beat by anyone. Sitting at the foot of the mountain with direct access, from your back yard, to pretty much all the hiking trails around town. It is very peaceful and beautiful, guaranteed to leave your soul satisfied. The rustic cabin is exactly what it sounds like, a small(but big enough) cabin with no distractions. If you're looking for a place to escape everyday life with your special someone to spend quality time together then I would recommend this option. If you're looking for something with more luxury, then one of their other room options will be what you're looking for. Karen is a wonderful host who will no doubt be able to cater to your needs.

Nice quiet and beautiful place.
Had a great time, walked around and the surroundings are also very beautiful. All the people in Clarens are very considerate, feel free to visit there.
This time it was just an overnight visit, but as in the past it was once again neat and clean and we were kindly received. Cottage Pie is highly recommended.

I would classify it as a budget overnight. No shower, no light in bathroom, light in kitchen but couldn't find switch, poor maintenance, bath faucet has e.g. fallen off if you touch it. Some of the other rooms may be better.

It is a beautiful place, we were welcomed to a dead quiet and peaceful place to sleep. Slight complication with carrying our bikes to the first floor, but that was due to the fact that we left too early for access to the garage. I can recommend the place with an open heart.

We had a great stay at Cottage Pie. The only problem with the roof room is that the voices of the unit can be heard below us and can be quite disturbing if the people are talking loudly. Especially early in the morning.

The family unit at Cottage Pie is a fully equipped house full of character, which was absolutely perfect for our family of 5, with beautiful, spacious and 'cozy' rooms. Thanks to two coal stoves, the whole house is wonderfully heated; and with the garden literally bordering the nature reserve, we couldn't have asked for more. Karen was so kind and hospitable, it was truly an unforgettable experience. We will see the Cottage Pie again for sure!

From the moment you walk in, it's only more impressive with every step. The family unit is eclectically furnished with so many interesting pieces. The outside garden is surely a hiding place for fairies.

No fault with accommodation, but if you turn off the main road (tarred road), the dirt road is very bad for your car.
An indication of proximity to the main attractions within the town and whether it is in fact within easy walking distance would be a useful added feature. Due to load shedding (which is beyond the control of the owner) the property was extremely dark and lonely.
Cutlery had water stains, thus left to dry. This is not sanitary. The carpet had a drenched wet patch.
The downstairs section was fine as it had a garden, but the upstairs room is very cramped, with hardly a kitchen and no shower.
If you survive the absolutely awful, almost impassable, excuse for a road, you'll find this gem of a place. Everything is clean and tidy with a carafe of port or sherry to welcome you. The unit was cleaned daily when we checked out. I can confidently recommend it.

A very warm welcoming host was there to greet us when we arrived. Wonderful very comfortable well appointed accommodation. Set against sandstone mountains next to a bubbling stream, a beautiful garden and right next to the Clarens Conservancy. Absolutely perfect!
The area is beautiful. The mountain and stream and vegetation make the atmosphere calm and you can relax. The accommodation was tops. No complaints. Everything was clean and beautiful and practical.
If you are looking for peace and quiet in the most beautiful garden by the mountain, Cottage Pie is the place for you. The Family Unit feels like a home away from home with antique beautiful furnishings and a lovely kitchen. WiFi was a bonus with teenagers. We had such a good time, reading with a glass port in the hand on the bank of the river and just recharging batteries. Thank you for a wonderful visit.

Everything you need to get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Big thanks to Karen who made the effort to come and start the borehole pump in the dark (despite the drought in Clarens - the whole of the Free State). Next time we will visit longer. Trust that here Heavenly floodgates will open and sufficient rain will fall.
Very nice and cute place, love the antiques. A little way out of town, the road there was a little rough. Otherwise nice and quiet, just what we needed.

We stayed in the Owner Unit. The place is more suitable for 2 people. It is very cramped and there is not really any storage space for luggage. The kitchen is tiny and there is almost no work space. The cutlery, kettle and two-plate stove are out of the old box and need to be replaced. The braai has also seen better days and the garden set is also from 1980. One expects with the amount you pay per night that the place has been upgraded. People with back problems will also not sleep comfortably on the beds, they are very soft. One can also hear guests moving around in the upper floor. Also, don't expect to be able to lie down and relax in front of the TV, it's very small and tucked into a cupboard. Good points: fresh bedding and close to the mountain for hiking trails.

Karen was very friendly and was in touch the day we had to arrive to wish us a speedy trip. The location a little further from the town is exactly what we wanted to get out of the busy tourist town. There was a cleaning service every day that made up the beds, washed the dishes and even cleared the ash in the braai. It's very convenient. If you are self catering, the fridge is too small to accommodate everything, but I have to say we stayed longer than the normal weekend visitor. Take a stroll to The Artist Café, lovely coffee and Karen's restaurant.
Our doggy visited Cottage Pie with us and it was a wonderful experience. Our house was fenced and she had a great time running around. The garden is beautiful with the most beautiful bird sounds and the footpath on the mountain just a short walk from there. We will certainly go back. Thank you very much.

We had a lovely stay in Cottage Pie. It's about a 10 min walk from the town center (uphill, so you can reward yourself at one of the many restaurants when you reach the town). There are also many hiking trails and some mountain climbing trails 20m from the accommodation. The rooms are nicely cleaned every day. There are also delicious braai facilities. I recommend Cottage Pie to anyone wanting a true Clarens experience.
This cottage is in a gorgeous part of Clarens - right at the mountain with a 20 second access to a beautiful forest walk. Very comfortable cottage with all the necessities for a very pleasant stay - including a coffee plunger! Thank you.

The accommodation was okay, bath leaked, informed the owner and she said she would fix it.
The space is tight. The kitchen cabinets are old. The bathroom shower had mildew. Bedding was fresh and clean.
Pleasant stay in the upstairs under thatch room. Room was clean. Perfectly acceptable for weekend away in Clarens for a room only and eat out.
The two rooms we booked were inadequate. Not suitable for self catering. The photos on the overview page are misleading and the large table on the veranda is not available for visitors in the two rooms. The wire chairs in the garden are old and inadequate - bent leg caused my elderly father to fall. The kitchen is very small and poorly equipped. I had to ask for a bread knife, there is no grater, a choice between very small glasses or beer glasses. A two plate stove, no oven, very little work space and a very small bar fridge. The hostess blamed us for misunderstanding the website and even if we had she should have taken the attitude that she wanted to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Unfortunately, it was an unpleasant experience.
We will visit Cottage Pie again in the near future for sure.
Lovely breakaway which put more emphasis on Clarens's natural beauty than its town hype. Loved staying in the cabin at the foot of the mountain!
Unfortunately, the two single beds in the family unit's mattresses were so soft that we slept on the floor. We used the sofa's cushions. The soft beds gave us quite a backache. Overall very nice and fantastic location.
Cottage Pie is a peaceful place to stay and Karen is a really nice host, always available to answer your questions. The rooms are quite big and the beds were very comfortable. It's a 10 minute walk from the city center. Clarens is a beautiful town worth a visit that offers a lot of cute shops, nice restaurants and nature/hiking.

Great area. Very relaxing with stream running infront of the cabin. Best getaway for a relaxing weekend without any technology.
The Cabin is our favourate getaway sport for a weekend. The Cabin is fully-equipped and has everything you need for a short getaway. The lack of electronic amenities, such as TVs and radios makes it so much more peaceful and nicer.
Upstairs Under Thatch is suitable for people who just want to stay overnight and be out all day. Everything is very neat and we slept wonderfully.
Few points: 1) The website calls it 'self-catering' but there's not even a sink to wash your dishes? 2) It's winter in Clarens so the heater will definitely be used. If you turn on the kettle, the power goes out - Nobody informs you about this and you just have to look around to see where to turn it on again. 3) The website states 'Safe Parking'. Hmm. On Cottage Pie's property someone broke into my car and tools and clothes were stolen. Almost my bike too! Summary: We did not sleep well, mostly awake.
We will remember our stay at Cottage Pie's family unit in December 2016 forever. We had a lovely relaxing time and tremendously enjoyed the walking trails in the next-door nature reserve. The unit is furnished with gorgeous wooden furniture, has a lovely well equipped kitchen, even a reading room where you can just relax the whole day when the weather doesn't play along, a cosy outdoor patio, bedrooms with the loveliest fresh linen, and lots of packing space. The gorgeous garden is an absolute pleasure. Our unit was serviced daily.

We are a family of six adults who travelled down to Clarens for the 2016 beerfest. The location, right up against the golden rocks of the mountain, is absolutely stunning. The accommodation is perfect with the best bed linen ever. Once your head hit that pillow you were away with the fairies. Would definitely recommend and use in the future.
The Bedsitter unit is well equipped with all the necessary items and very clean. It's ideal for 2 people. The garden is beautiful and the view is picturesque. We had a great time and will definitely go back again!

Cottage Pie is located close to hiking trails and not too far from the town square. The facilities were kept clean and the stay was such a pleasure. Karen was also very good at pointing out places one could go to on a day to day basis!

This was our second visit and we will be back again. The garden, nature and mountain are just incredibly peaceful and beautiful, and the price is right! I find the place very private and romantic, and even though the shower is small, you have everything you need to relax. Both times we had a great stay!
We stayed in the Cottage. Very nice place with all the self-catering facilities you need, with even milk in the fridge! The carpet in the toilet just had a smell to it and so did the whole place. But otherwise we had a very nice stay in the deserted place in the forest. Been very romantic.
The service was very good, it was not a problem that we got there only late. The heater was already on and it was cozy and welcoming. We will stay there again.
It was a lovely relaxing weekend, far from the city's noise! The log cabin is really in the woods and up the mountain - wonderfully cool and eerily quiet in the evening! Shower cubicle a little on the small side but the instant hot water was a winner and although we would have preferred a much firmer mattress, we almost fell asleep the first morning - thanks to the silence and the coolness! Knowing that I will definitely stay there again on the next occasion!
A rejuvenating setting at the foothills of the mountain with access to great hiking trails, and close enough to the lovely town square. The birds chirped with delight, the wind blew with tranquility, and the silence was welcome. Brilliant and enjoyable.
One of the best places in Clarens to relax. Very quiet and a nice place to get away from the city.
The patio was dirty and there were no one that welcomed us. The kettle was dirty and busy furring up. The rest was pleasant.

Our stay in the wooden house in the beautiful garden next to the stream and against the mountain and hiking trails was very pleasant, and the owners very friendly and helpful.

We are a family of 5 adults who were away for a weekend. We really enjoyed the special breakfast on Sunday morning. Owners are very friendly and definitely go the extra mile to make the stay as pleasant as possible. We could also barbecue in the garden on Saturday evening. We will definitely recommend the place to our friends.
Good and friendly service received. First night we were in the wooden house by the stream which was lovely, from the second night we were in the B&B where the bed was less comfortable and we didn't have a kitchenette. But it was still fun!
The ideal place to stay for a visit in Clarens.
Fantastic, quiet setting with big trees and lots of birds. Our puppy went along and was able to move around freely and safely. The bedding was clean and tidy which is always very important. The unit is very basic but the biggest problem was the people upstairs who moved around a lot with the baby on the wooden floor. Karen was very friendly and helpful with regular communication.
Room has no TV and DStv. Would also prefer to have own braai place. Other than that, good!
It was my partner's first experience of Clarens, so the accommodation I booked was very important to me. My children also drove through to spend the time with us and this certainly also contributed to how we would experience our stay. I was pretty disappointed though. Obviously the garden can't look like it does on the website (it's winter after all) but the rooms themselves really didn't look the same as in the photos. It felt a little sloppy. Beds were quite a problem for all of us because they are hard! Thanks for the coffee but it's a shame we didn't get milk for it. I can only emphasize again that Karen is extremely pleasant and made an effort to welcome us. It was nice to meet her.
I had to give a rating in the first two categories (Value for money and Customer service) but the website does not allow 0 stars. But trust me, the place deserves less than 0 stars in those categories. For a start, the picture is not at all what we got. We slept in a log cabin. I have already written and sent emails and photos about the nasty experience.
We were only able to check in at 13:00 and were very surprised by all the tourists and shops. So we walked and shopped and then went to rest. The mountain routes early in the morning very easy and soul-invigorating.
