59 guests' feedbackIt was a blessing from heaven above, not only was it a lovely place with beautiful breakfasts, the staff and employees go out of their way to make you feel at home. Thanks to the team for making our stay in Stellenbosch so memorable.
There was no fuss. The morning breakfast is a great addition to the stay.
The place is on the corner of Main and Mill Streets. There is a lovely balcony to sit on and see the students. Everything is together and Jason also arranged for us secure parking down the street. We visited a restaurant he recommended, saw the Springboks win against New Zealand. And we had a lovely walk, photographed churches, visited galleries and everything was just lovely.
It was our 2nd consecutive stay at the guest house and like last time, the service was excellent, breakfast the best, rooms always tidy and I will want to stay there every time & definitely recommend it to family and friends.
Warm, welcoming with a certain berg-air wistfulness about it. de Oude Meul Guest House is not your flash, modern apartment block; it is a monument building made of stone and clay, with thick walls and narrow stairways. It has character, history, and so much more. We loved it. They were so accommodating too. I traveled with my mum; an extra bed was put in the room for convenience (so we didn't have to share the double), and upon request, plenty of bags of Five Roses Tea and Rooibos for said mother who loves her tea! When you walk into the Café for breakfast, you get the distinct feeling of familiarity; these aren't all just random customers off the street, but many regulars, some who have become friends as handshakes and pleasantries are exchanged. Although we were tourists, sitting in the Café, we didn't feel touristy and felt a bit like extended family as we called it "home" when roaming the streets of Stellenbosch. You are incredibly central when you stay at de Oude Meul Guest House. You must take this into account when booking because with the convenience also comes the commotion. It can get a bit noisy at night depending on when you travel. Pack earplugs if you're a light sleeper or get uptight about lack of sleep when on holiday. Remember you are in the heart of the city, and the city is to be enjoyed by the revelers. I am not much of a night reveler (anymore) but simply enjoyed the city commotion as part of the experience and then snuck in an afternoon power nap if I felt a deterioration in my mood. Jason, the owner of de Oude Meul Guest House, is a fountain of knowledge with regards to the history of the area and has lots of quirky stories and tales. His deep-set eyebrows and grumpy façade are just that - a façade. A great sense of humour sits behind those eyebrows. Ask lots of questions. We found him a wonderful host.
Excellent, with a great choice of places to eat, walking distance.
The warm welcome together with pleasant hospitality was well received. Thank you.
I had a nice stay and the breakfast was delicious. Conveniently within walking distance of everything in the town centre, but it also has its downsides, as some nights it can get quite noisy!
It was comfortable and close to everything. The parking is too far away.
In terms of location, you cannot ask for better as it is about as central as you can get. The staff were super attentive and communication cannot be faulted.
The guest house is located in the middle of town, making it an easy walk to Dorp St restaurants, which is great. It's noisy though, but to be expected at that location. The room I stayed in felt like it needed a deep clean and some TLC. The mattress was okay but could be better. The aircon worked well, which was appreciated, as was the good WiFi! I battled unlocking and locking the inner door at street level - not great if you're wanting to get inside quickly. The key worked, but I had to fiddle each time. There was no in-room safe for a laptop - maybe that's a Joburg thing .
Not so many leaks. The manager is very nice and friendly, but to describe the accommodation as a guest house is not entirely accurate, it is rather guest rooms in an old building in the center of town. It is indeed centrally located, but it is very noisy during the day. At night it is better. The rooms themselves are clean, but everything is very tired and could really do with some renovation. Access to the rooms can be problematic for people who are no longer terribly mobile and/or have heavy luggage. There is only one steep, narrow staircase to the top. The breakfast is served in an open restaurant at street level, is tasty and service is generally brisk.
Cost for the absolute minimum. Location is not everything. Blood on my duvet. Aircon didn't work. Only one washed towel, no face/hand towel.
Worst experience ever, can't use again.
Feel free to visit the Oude Meul yourself. The location was very good, but the entrance stank so much that we literally had to run up the stairs. The last day there were maggots walking on the carpet. We were advised to please turn off the air conditioning during the night, it draws too much electricity. It was 34° plus outside. The towels were as thin as sheets. There was no hand towel or toilet brush. The towels were washed and semi-dried, so they smelled musty. The "hanger" with 6 hangers in it for 2 people's keys was paper folded up and pushed between the doors. The mattress and linens have definitely seen better days. The furniture is antique, but neglected and old. This is only one room's feedback. We had to park 2 blocks away. We traveled from Mossel Bay and so we had everything with us. We had to unload it all and store it in our rooms as the parking was said to be "fairly" secure. However, we made a plan and stopped at an art gallery to unload and carry to rooms. However, the breakfast each morning was delicious. As I have already recommended, you can visit the place yourself and then decide for yourself whether it is suitable accommodation. I am deeply disappointed by the Oude Meul.
Jason is an excellent host. The breakfast bar is really nice. We loved the view and balcony.
Inconvenient for a woman to open and close a vehicle's gate in the dark at night. Parking is indeed safe for vehicles, only bad not to have an automatic car gate. Very dark with current loadshedding conditions. Fridge in room would be nice for milk and clean coffee mugs every morning.
Manager Jason and owner Arno were helpful and charming and I'm sorry to criticise the place. It was poky and not comfortable. No hand towel, nowhere in basin to put soap. In our friend's room a tap came out of the wall, the mirror was not secured and the place was rundown.
Bit dated but a good location, you are in town so it was noisy. Very grateful for aircon. Super breakfast.
Breakfast was fantastic.
Thankful that LekkeSlaap was able to confirm our accommodation on the third try. Not exactly what we expected. You can enjoy a nice glass of wine on the balcony at midnight, while all the students walk past your window and be merry. Good for sleep. If you want to do downtown life, then this is the place for you. Will definitely visit Stellies again, will definitely not use LekkeSlaap to book again.
Jason was very friendly and helpful. Room on corner of very busy street.
Enjoyed my stay very much. Would definitely go back.
Incredible hospitality.
All was as expected and the service was fantastic. Great stay.
The location was my biggest plus: close to everything. The Express breakfast has room for improvement!
Friendly staff and informative.
Nicely located. Breakfast was included and delicious.
Oude Meul is centrally located in the heart of Stellenbosch and is within walking distance of a number of restaurants, shops and places to visit in the area. Amenities at Oude Meul are basic (nothing fancy), but are certainly some of the more affordable options in the area. Breakfast, served in the Mill coffee shop was very nice. Travelers should be aware that you are staying in the busier areas of town and noise from traffic and passing pedestrians may be a concern for travelers who expected a more peaceful environment.
De Oude Meul Guest House is very cute and close to nice restaurants in Stellenbosch. The manager is very nice. I would recommend putting a microwave and small fridge in the room.
Quaint hotel with character.
Place is small/cramped. Centrally in town. Stairs inconvenient. Probably won't easily stay there again. Parking is far from home and inconvenient.
The location just above a coffee shop is fantastic.
Although we did not have breakfast, this was included, which made the daily rate very reasonable.
Location is perfect, the breakfast was delicious and value for money. My room was spacious enough, and tidy, the bathroom very clean and spacious, everything was cleaned and checked every day.
Excellent and centrally located. The breakfast downstairs at Mill Coffeeshop was delicious with good service.
Their service was great, the staff were super friendly. I would happily recommend it to people.
Our last-minute booking was handled very well and the room was very tidy.
Value for money. Jason the manager put in a lot of effort. His service is excellent. Central and safe. Breakfast was delicious and service excellent.
The accommodation was quite up to standard and the breakfast was incredibly tasty. Would recommend that the rooms and especially the wooden deck on the outside be upgraded a bit, but otherwise we really enjoyed the stay.
Very friendly service, clean and tidy.
Location of guesthouse perfect, near hospital, could walk to visit wife.
The rooms are right above the restaurant so there is noise all the time. You can hear the people in the restaurant talking from early on. Towels are very thin and frayed and the shower is very dirty. Black mold in the grout of the wall tiles and floor. Managers are very nice and it's a super comfortable place.
Old world atmosphere, very central location.
We had a bit of a problem with the parking as we had to park far from the guest house, but yet we do understand as it was in town. Overall, the location is excellent so it makes up for the parking we got behind closed gates. You can walk anywhere - the shops and nightlife are excellent. Over weekends we would have preferred to have some kind of room service as there was none.
The accommodation and service was very good, will stay there again in the future.
Front door key did not work properly.
For future guests, remember you are in a busy part of Stellenbosch, so if you want to have an early night, this place is not for you. Lots of students during the night that enjoy themselves. Not for the mature and elderly guests, lots of steps to get to your room, narrow staircase, and on the first floor. Amsterdam-style accommodation.
We booked 3 guests at different times at Oude Meule. First negative feedback is that our guest had to leave his room at 08:00 in the morning so that the housekeeping staff could get to the washing machine. Second point, parking was a problem. Third point, the pillowcases were dirty.
Nice breakfast and friendly staff.
Very pleasant and affordable accommodation in central Stellenbosch, within walking distance of most places to visit, such as museums and galleries, theatres, shops and many interesting street cafes and restaurants in the beautiful historic town. The building is very old, with associated problems, such as very steep steps to get to rooms, lack of power plugs, outdated air conditioning, slow but finally quite effective on the very hot west side. The staff is very pleasant and helpful, room and bathroom clean and tidy. The breakfasts are sufficient at the adjacent coffee shop. Secure parking available.
The guest house was clean and very tidy. Crisp bedding and soft, off-white towels made up for a slightly cramped room space. Everything we needed was available. The reception and welcome was friendly, but we were not properly informed about how breakfast would work the next morning at the coffee shop next door. In the room we discovered a small piece of paper that indicated the two breakfast options and stated that we had to submit the options by a certain time to qualify for breakfast. The host had already left the premises and left us the piece of paper (before the deadline) on the desk at reception and hoped that we would get breakfast. The next morning the paper was no longer on the desk and we trusted that our breakfast choice had been transferred to the coffee shop. Great was our surprise when we arrived at the coffee shop in front of a dead man's door. After a knock on the door, a little woman came shuffling over: "Sorry, we're on Sundays, but come in. Where's your "voucher"?" Us: "We didn't get a "voucher", but are staying in the guest house up here." Needless to say, we decided to say goodbye to the breakfast in a closed coffee shop instead among stacks of chairs and a pile of patio umbrellas. Next time we would rather pay a few hundred rand extra at another guest house where the kitchen and dining room are located on the premises itself. Lesson learned.
Room was very neat, air conditioning a relief in the heat and the walk to the university was easy.
No privacy or place to talk aside from the living area which also serves as the office. And the doors of the other rooms lead to it. The room is very small, equipped with only the necessary. Expected better for the price.
Friendly staff. Nothing else to add.
The reception was not nice. The money was, accodring to the receptionist, not paid in full after I asked her to check. She said I must still pay in, only for her to come back after a half an hour and tell us she will have to refund us. The parking area was very scary to park the car, there were a lot of people loitering about. The shop underneath was very noisy the next morning.
