308 guests' feedbackReally nice stay! Perfect location in Sutherland!
Had a great stay, thank you, the owner was very nice.
Out of this world. We were received with open arms, and were told the history of this house. You were amazing.
The Witch's house is a lovely stopover in Sutherland. It is well equipped with everything needed. The indoor grill was a huge bonus.
Very nice stay. Thank you for your hospitality. Your place is stunning.
Beautiful house with all the amenities one could ask for. Beautifully restored and well maintained and clean! In town and can walk to everything. Very good value for money.
Very nice, thank you.
Slept very nice, warm and comfortable, in the middle of the town near the main road. Quiet and peaceful.
The communication from Die Heks se Huis was amazing from the day we booked right up to our departure. We were late and arrived long after dark. The host took care of our stargazing bookings and guided us as we travelled all the way from the Gariep dam until we stopped in front of the accommodation. Like a beacon in the night. The host was waiting in the dark snowy cold to direct us in from the dark with a flashlight towards our parking and to help us unload in time for the stargazing interlude at the Planetarium! Extra wood (make sure not wet) for heat is a must and ready-made micro meals would have been way better than us trying to braai tjoppies for dinner after the show. You want to get into the bed (with electric blanket) a. s. a. p! PS: When it is -9 degrees, showering is optional.
Clean, comfortable, great communication, great hosts.
The stay at Die Heks se Huis was wonderful with fireplaces and a black cloth, and enough electric blankets for the cold evenings. The management is approachable, friendly and helpful. Feel free to book a walking tour through the town in advance.
We had a great time! Our 6-year-old enjoyed the rooster!
Very nice stay, thank you.
Very interesting and beautiful.
We were so pleasantly surprised with the Witch's House! The hostess literally welcomed us with open arms. The interior of the house looks even better than in the photos!
It was perfect! It was as advertised.
Very nice stay and visit. Nicely grilled and we could get what was short at OK around the corner. The planetarium next door was a bonus.
Excellent hospitality! House was tidy and all the necessary facilities were there. One recommendation would be to lower the mosquito nets as they do not touch the bed when they are down.
The hosts welcomed us warmly and made sure we had everything we needed and knew where everything was. They also gave us many useful tips and a lot of information about the town. We had booked up all our time online before we arrived, so didn't have time for one of their historic walking tours of the town, but it was clear from conversations with them that they have made it their business to find out everything there is to know. We will book a tour with them next time for sure. The house was clean and comfortable, the art, artefacts, antiques and beautiful old handmade things all over the house give it a special atmosphere. We were so happy to be able to take our pup with us. Staying at the accommodation was fabulous, the beds are comfortable, the hot water was hot, the house is extremely well equipped. We'll be back.
See stars.
What a perfect place for a break or if you are touring our country. Many thanks to the people there. Power was unfortunately out (big storm knocked out a very large area) but that only made the stargazing even better.
Fantastic, location perfect and our hosts were great. Definitely a must!
Feeling at home, so among the witches, the stars and the nothingness. Rest for one's soul, the "Southland".
Really nice! Calm and very close to everything.
Very nice stay. In the cold weather that was there, the fireplace was a necessity as were the electric blankets.
We enjoyed a comfortable stay in a central location with all that we needed. Our stay was cozy despite the cold weather, and the gas was helpful with the area power outage.
Nice stay - power failure across the whole town for the first 24 hours and the house is not kitted for that at all, but luckily our hosts lent us their Cadac gas bottle. Very grateful for that; otherwise, it would have been miserable with the cold and rain, and no coffee. Luckily, the power was restored on day two so we could shower and enjoy the electric blankets! Otherwise, we enjoyed our stay.
Thank you for the friendly welcome and interesting conversation about the history of the town. We had a great stay and would love to stay there again!
Shower head needs attention and perhaps an outdoor braai suitable for seniors.
Friendly reception let us come. Fireplace was already packed and beds cozy with electric blankets. Neat and clean. Adequately equipped.
The unit is compact and adequately furnished. Electric blankets are a plus in the cold! Amanda is a wealth of information - thanks so much for answering our questions!
Ideal for 2 people, cheap accommodation, in the center of town close to everything.
We had no electricity for a day. Of course you can't blame anyone, but Sutherland was freezing cold, soaking wet and very muddy. Just a suggestion - throw a decent rug at the front door where the worst wet and muddy feet can be wiped off. The towel placed there is too thin. Maybe carry large stones from the parking area to the rooms' doors - our shoes and socks were soaking wet! A kettle to make hot water on the fire would also be nice! In contrast to the weather, the reception was warm and friendly. We felt welcome and had a great stay. Next time we will visit in the summer! Thank you very much for your hospitality.
Nice Amanda is great.
Have a nice time. slept warm Only complaints were that carpets were very dirty and dusty. They have not been vacuumed for a long time, and some of the towels can be replaced. The house had dust, but it's on a dirt street, so that's to be expected. Last night it rained and the living room and one room leaked at the doors, but we had a good time. The hostess was friendly.
Slept wonderfully warm.
Unity is "artificial" but not to everyone's taste. Bathroom is too dark.
Nice quiet, friendly people.
We had a great time in front of the fireplace and it's super centrally located, everything in town could be reached on foot. Only criticism is the house was not very clean, we washed the kitchen surface ourselves and the dishwasher was left dirty.
The house was beautiful and easy to find. The only comment was the cleanliness. The house was very dusty. The linen and beds were clean and felt fresh, but the floors and bathrooms were dusty. Plates in the kitchen were also all dusty and needed to be rinsed before use. Glasses were fine as they were in the cabinet. We had ants in the kitchen and in the girls' bedroom and no insect repellent. Ants were in the floorboards by the fireplace in the 3rd room. It was like the house was cleaned and linen changed when the last guests departed, but no spring clean and wipe and dust was done before we checked in. We are quite chilled so didn't really bother us, but it was a bit disappointing as the house itself is divine and perfect for our family's little holiday.
We had a good stay and the reception was friendly with all the necessary information about Sutherland.
It was very nice, thank you.
No electricity, no warm water, only a few pieces if wood in a fire place that smoked the entire room.
Our hostess deserves full marks for excellent service. She is knowledgeable about the area and extremely helpful and friendly. As for the accommodation, it was less good. The unit was dusty. We had to clean the mirror first and there was a dripping shower faucet that we turned on tightly but continued to drip. The door to the bathroom doesn't close nearly as tightly, so the dripping bothered us a lot. At least the beds had clean linen, but oh, that dripping shower! Our stay was just after a big storm damaged electrical services over a large part of the Karoo. There was no electricity. No gas either. So, no meal prepared and no coffee made. With the amount of sunny and cloudless days in Sutherland, one would certainly expect solar panels for hot water and power.
We stayed ok, but something definitely needs to be done with the current WiFi. It was bad.
We booked and paid for accomodation with a fridge and hot water. Although no fault of the owner Eskom was down. I was exteemely disapointed we were only informed of this when we arived although the owner knew about this situation for over a week.
Shower blocked, not enough lighting, not enough seating, no provisions in case of electricity outage which there was. Dusty.
No, there is definitely room for improvement regarding cleanliness. The old towel lying on the floor as a mat for dirty feet by the door has more dust on it than the dust street in front of the road. Kitchen chair cushions are dirty and dusty. We realize it's a rural town. Don't compare it to bigger places! But slept in Ladismith at a neat country guest house.
Very nice, no problems. Thank you.
Very nice stay here. Toured the Western Cape on my motorcycle and always wanted to stargaze in Sutherland, so it was definitely worth it. Plekkie was very well equipped with everything I needed, including a Karoo TV (fireplace). Clean and tidy. Hostess also made sure everything was in order. Definitely recommend.
We were kindly received by the hostess and she told us the history of the beautiful house. The house is equipped with everything one needs. The bed slept very well and the towels were big and cuddly which was a bonus. I would recommend the place anytime.
Very friendly welcome! We had 3 separate rooms for our party. Everyone was very impressed. Will definitely stay here again! Neat, clean and value for money! Thank you guys!
Will definitely recommend the accommodation to all our friends - 5 star all the way
The accommodation and hospitality deserve the 5 stars we have given. The delicious fireplace was the crowning glory of the cozy visit.
We did stargazing and visited SALT which was amazing.
The accommodation was like in my grandmother's house, everything was there and very clean. Amanda and Marita were very hospitable and did everything possible to ensure a stunning atmosphere and accommodation and it was amazing, true heart people and salt of the earth. Will always go back and recommend to everyone.
Great time, accommodation is central and you can walk where you want to be. Just take plenty of warm clothes and firewood in the winter!
We had a wonderful stay and slept nice and warm with the fireplace and electric blankets. Marita was so professional and helpful and even booked me a place at the Old Mill for dinner because my signal was weak. I would definitely recommend the Witch's House and Sutherland and stay there again.
Clean, comfortable and nice hostess. Thank you very much.
Loved our time there.
Right next to the planetarium. Walking distance to shops and restaurants. Will visit again in the winter so we can take full advantage of that Kalahari TV.
It's such a unique place, we had a wonderful overnight stay. It was indeed a short time there, but so sweetly welcomed and shown everything nicely. It really is a beautiful place to stay.
We were impressed with the walking tour.
Beautiful place to stay with perfect location and friendliest service.
Lovely stay in the characterful house. Very well received and also supported and helped with car problems we experienced.
Will definitely stay there again in the future. Would recommend anyone to stay there. Great, fast service. The extra mile is walked. Thanks again, it was a pleasant experience for sure.
Had a nice stay and everything was sufficient.
Perfect location, walking distance from everything. Cosy little apartment. Everything was neat and tidy. The roof was leaking onto the kitchen working surface, so everything was wet. I would also add some loose carpets to the room as the cement finish is very cold.
It was very cold, but the fireplace helped.
We had a great time relaxing in this artistic and spacious house.
We were received very kindly! The house is very well furnished and is 100% self-catering. The location is perfect. I would definitely recommend Die Heks se Huis to people who want to stay in Sutherland for a few days.
Marita and Amanda, thank you for your fantastic hospitality and kindness. You know your hosts are awesome when you say goodbye like old friends when leaving. The two of you contribute towards the majority of making the accommodation and stay in Sutherland special and relaxing. We had an amazing time. A weekend of great stargazing and just absolute peace and quiet which was needed to recharge the soul.
Don't waste time. Get into debt. Grab that credit card. You have to go.
We only spent one night there and it was pleasant. The location was very good. There were 3 entrance gates but we didn't know that and the location link took us to the wrong one. Maybe they should indicate it better and put an indication on the gates themselves, because when I called and asked them which one I was at, I didn't know what to say. However, we were warmly received and I like the information library about attractions and activities that was in the cottage. We were provided with regular tea and coffee bags, but would have preferred rooibos tea as well. Additionally, a small container of salt and pepper would have been welcome. Unfortunately, the pots, pans and crockery were quite dusty and we had to wash them before we could cook. They may need to consider putting doors on or washing the kitchen contents the morning before check-in. Otherwise everything was good.
Very clean.
Nothing monotonous about this beautiful, artsy home. Everything is tasteful and well appointed. Hostess is friendly and knowledgeable. Slept wonderfully warm. Will definitely come back again.
We had a nice stay in the unit and the hostess was always available.
We had a nice stay.
We had a wonderful stay. Amanda was very hospitable and made us feel right at home. The house is clean, tidy and very well equipped with everything you need. The fireplace and electric blankets taught the cold a lesson. Would definitely recommend The Witch's House.
Consumables such as tea, coffee and milk could have been better considering the temperature, but as it was only overnight and we enjoyed the stay in Sutherland which included the tours at SALT.
Neat, clean, all basics provided. My personal feeling is that there is far too much of a fuss made about this place. There are quite a few other options that can certainly be considered. Photos make the place look beautifully light, but lighting inside is extremely poor. The woman you receive talks far too much, and tries to convince you not to eat at the Boorgat. We luckily followed our own heads, and both the food and service were excellent!
We enjoyed our stay. It snowed during our stay. Great experience! Just the fireplace needs a smaller outlet. The wind came down the chimney causing some breathing issues with inhaling dust from the fireplace. Other than that, great!
See stars.
We arrived and it started snowing! Not enough to settle but it snowed nevertheless. Got a fire going but unfortunately the fireplace smoked. A good supply of dry wood would be a bonus. We weren't charged for the 3 year old which was very kind of them. The host was very welcoming. Unit is sparsely equipped for self-catering.
You cannot expect five star accommodation if you pay two star rates!
They can really only give a lamp or candle or 'back up' light if it is loadshedding. It's pitch black and you can't even move in the unit because you can't see anything.
R&M not very good, broken putty in windows, peeling shutters, toilet was leaking at the back. Flower pots were full of dead plants and the stoep could have done with a good sweep. And the en suite bathroom had no windows, shower cubicle constructed of rusty corrigated iron sheets. Fire extinguisher not serviced, 1 year beyond expiry date.
Accommodation was designed to reflect living conditions of a farmhouse dweller of 300 years ago. The cottage - particularly the shower and kitchen plumbing - felt dirty, smelly and unhygienic to a modern-day traveller. But the bed linen was immaculate and lots of other conveniences such as a fan and hairdryer were provided. But consumables such as tea, coffee, milk and soap were inadequate. We were very happy to leave although Sutherland itself is a unique and interesting place to visit.
We were warmly received at Die Heks Se Huis and the house is even more beautiful in real life than in the photos. There is literally everything you can think of to need in the house and beautiful decor and artwork. We were so sorry that we stayed there for such a short time. We could stay there for weeks. The kitchen has everything possible and is beautiful and functional. The whole town is within walking distance and we could walk to everything. Would very much like to come here again in the future, but this time we are staying longer!
The room is spacious and versatile - the fireplace can also be used as a braai. The facility is neat and well maintained. However, the shower is impractical with no place to put down a soap dish and shampoo.
We booked at Heks se Huis on short notice. Amanda presented our choice of rooms. The house had everything that was needed. Fireplace in the living room, a large kitchen with a gas stove, fridge-freezer, all the appliances you can think of. The house has large rooms. There are electric blankets. Indoor parking is available. She also helped us organize excursions. The NG Church tour is worth it. The stargazing was nice.
Very well received, accommodation was excellent.
Very helpful, friendly and welcoming people.
Went to visit family. Could make a nice fire inside the fireplace to warm the room. Electric blankets were lovely. Clean and tidy and close to everything.
In the middle of town. Everything one needs.
Lovely visit in the village with the silence and stars.
We had a wonderful stay and watched stars with Jurg. The shower could have had a door in front and a mirror in the room by a power plug for hair drying would have been nice. Other than that, no complaints, friendly service.
Very centrally located in a safe village with lovely fireplace and electric blankets. Comfortable to stay overnight. Only the shower that leaks in the bathroom and then the floor is very wet. Very thin walls (against adjacent unit) which means that unfortunately you hear the neighbors (if there are neighbors) and it was disturbing at night.
Very nice, especially the fireplace in the cold.
Always a pleasure to stay there. The accommodation has everything you need, is neatly and conveniently located in the town centre, within walking distance of shops and restaurants.
Beautiful place and comfortable with everything you need. Really enjoyed the stars. Amanda they were so friendly and gave a lot of information about the area. Very nice people.
Our unit was fully equipped with everything we needed for self-catering. Our hostess received us very kindly and gave us a lot of information about what to do in Sutherland. The built-in braai was a bonus for the cold evenings. The unit was neat, clean and functional. We can definitely recommend The Witch's house.
Very friendly welcome. The cottage was perfect, love that there is no TV or WiFi. Nice to sit in front of the fire and switch off from social media. Sutherland is very cold, but we slept very nice and warm with the warm blankets that were provided.
Everything was neat and comfortable. The electric blanket was a winner against the cold Sutherland.
Amethyst is a beautiful house and is furnished with everything you need for a self-catering break. The kitchen, rooms and living room are very nice and tidy and we really enjoyed the fireplace. The apartment is also comfortable and tidy and the beds are very comfortable.
It is walking distance from everything.
Lovely, cosy accommodation; enjoyable stay. Loved every minute.
Small, distant towns sometimes yield unpleasant surprises when it comes to your stay. Not The Witch's House! It is large, comfortable, incredibly beautiful and a lovely home away from home when you come to visit Sutherland. No TV/WiFi (yay, said this mom). All I missed was a coffee dipper (French press), but apparently something like that is on the way. In the meantime, there is good coffee at the small observatory. Take a flashlight with you (there is no outside light, and you come back from stargazing in the dark), as well as good mosquito repellent. There is a large fireplace, small stove and coal stove in the house, plus warm duvets and electric blankets in the rooms - I believe it must be a lovely adventure in the winter.
Made a lot of effort to inform about everything in the town. Great relax.
See stars.
I would definitely recommend it. Here and there it was a bit dusty on top of shelves, but one can understand that in September/October with the winds and dust. Very appropriate decor elements and met all our needs.
The hostesses are very friendly and helpful. Provided us with all the information and told us what we asked for. Accommodation is very well located. Could walk through the whole town from there. The fireplace in the kitchen was a highlight.
Good service and the unit was clean.
Lovely stay, nice to hear the church bell every hour. Bonus: hot water while town is flooded.
We had a problem with the shower and reported it. Thank you very much it was fixed immediately. The witch's house is excellently located within walking distance of the local planetarium in town.
So grateful that I could stay there. Amanda you are my star, you have become a sister to me. Greetings to the owner.
Hostess was there - friendly and helpful. Would stay there again anytime.
Enjoyed our stay. Will definitely visit again.
Interesting place. Love the simplicity. Pet friendly.
It was lovely to visit Sutherland, and we felt so welcome. Thanks for all the effort.
Guesthouse was in contact with us all the time regarding our check-in time, friendly when we arrived, freely shared information regarding town.
Good, security for motorcycles could be better.
Will stay there again if we visit Sutherland.
Weekend in Sutherland to go stargazing.
Sutherland has been an experience. Friendly people and a lovely house that has been so beautifully renovated, but has still retained its old beauty. Tasteful furniture and lovely fireplace. Had a good time!
Feels like it hasn't been cleaned in a long time. A lot of dust. Aware of dust storms, but they were not applicable there in our time. Refrigerator and glass bathroom shelf were not cleaned after previous visitors. No wi-fi or TV.
A very authentic Sutherland experience. Very pleasant welcome, cute accommodation and a very central location. Perhaps just one recommendation to consider given the current loadshedding crises is to perhaps start looking at gas geysers or alternative electricity supply - maybe even paraffin lamps to tie in with the cottages' themes.
Amanda was very welcoming and the town walking tour she offers is a must. The rate is a bit high compared to other LekkeSlaap places and the crockery can be replaced.
The fireplace and electric blankets on the beds helped a lot against the cold.
We were received very kindly and it made the weekend start off just fine. The indoor barbecue was the best feature of the house. Will definitely stay there again next time!
On the way to Sutherland the hostess made recommendations about which route to take. This helped a lot as we did not know the state of the respective roads to Sutherland. She made us feel very welcome and shared interesting information about the town with us. She said where we can buy food or go to eat. It helped a lot. The accommodation was comfortable, everything we needed. Thank you very much Amanda.
We felt very much at home and had a great time.
The artwork and carpets in the house are striking. It is by far one of the most beautiful self-catering units we have stayed in. It is also much more spacious than it appears in the photos. Unfortunately, there were snags, e.g. pots were unusable (at least Amanda helped out with one when we asked), there is only one bedside table by the double bed, the seats of the upholstered chairs need cleaning and the only bedside lamp in the second bedroom does not work. There is also only one electric blanket on the double bed and a fireplace in the living room. Furthermore, there are no electric blankets on the single beds and no heaters either. And that's Sutherland. During load shedding it was dark early and we could do with a candle or light in the kitchen.
The house itself is beautiful, but amenities were disappointing. Three pieces of wood, no other heating, only one side of the electric blanket works, no electric blankets in other rooms. Bedside lamp not working, no shower facilities, only baths, no candles or lamps for load shedding.
Lekker plek, maklik om te kry, vriendelik diens.
It was only overnight to visit SAAO.
The witch's house is very beautiful, the beds were crisp and bathrooms were very clean and tidy. Maybe it's part of the witch "vibe" but the house was quite dusty. For the price, one expects WiFi, air conditioning and perhaps drinking water in the fridge and a clean house. Amanda is very helpful and friendly.
Nice stay! Friendly, neat and comfortable even if it is so simple! Creative, interesting, delicious! Go see the stars, and even though there were water restrictions, it was well prepared with extra water.
Very simply but adequately furnished. Close to most restaurants and planetarium. The smell of smoke in the room might put people off as everything is in one room. The local residents' noise in the main street and hotel unfortunately disturbs the silence that one expects from a small place in the Karoo.
Slept in Die Heks se Huis.
Good location in town. Fridge was unfortunately dirty and had a bad smell. Washed bathroom mat a long time ago.
It was immediately noticeable that the house smelled of old smoke and soot when we walked in. Amanda received us kindly and advised us to go buy wood and make a fire in the fireplace (Die Karoo TV). We also made a fire that night, but it was a big mistake. The chimney doesn't smoke at all and we almost suffocated. In the end I had to open the door and window and throw the burning wood outside with the braai tongs. We then just slept in a freezing cold room with the overpowering smell of smoke. The cottage is uninhabitable as it currently is if you would dare to light a fire in the fireplace. The shower spills all over the bathroom floor and the faucets over the small sink cause most of the water to end up on the floor when you try to wash your face. All the hot taps are on the wrong side.
Ideally, one would want to spend at least 2 nights there, mainly because the stargazing opportunities near Sutherland. The Witch's house is within walking distance of a few places to eat and also the local supermarket.
The owner is definitely fond of a lot of conversation, but not ready to listen. The recommendation she made to listen to Jurg Wagener's cheesy star talk was absolutely ridiculous. The effort she made to fix the parking in front of the house in the rain was much appreciated. The beds were warm, only the floors were freezing.
The cottage is a bare, minimalist self-catering experience. There was one room with two simple beds, a dusty animal skin rug, and a small table in the center of the room. A nice touch was the interior fireplace with armchairs in front of it. The kitchen is very basically stocked - we tried to make pancakes but there were no whisks, blenders, spoons, jugs, etc. There is no oven and all cooking is done either on the fireplace or a small gas cooker, which in our cabin was broken so that both plates immediately lit up to full strength with a single match and only one could be turned down (we needed to turn the gas off at night or it would leak out the broken switch). The bathroom is a toilet and a simple corrugated iron shower. All-in-all it's very basic and liveable. It has a lovely location though right in the center of the small town behind the planetarium. There are better options in town for less money.
They try make it cool, but it is clearly just cheap. My room - 3/4 bed with a single duvet. Duvet falls off. Window catch broken, so room not lockable - could not leave valuables/laptop behind. Front door lock very 'iffy'. Room not serviced.
Price is good but you get what you pay for. Shower head leaking. Owner sends someone to dry the floor, but the tap keeps leaking. Drip, drip, drip, all night. Well, warm blankets, but the room is freezing cold. Fireplace is not going to warm the place. I had already forgotten how cold a cement floor is. Try to find other accommodation first.
I'm not sure if the owners care about their clients or their own reputation. We stayed at 6 establishments over a period of two weeks, Heks se Huis gets a zero, and the others 4 to 5. The arms on the armchairs were filthy with years of grime, the covers dirty and moth-eaten. We had ankle-deep showers - the drain was clogged with hair and muck. The riempies on one of the dining room chairs were broken. I don't think the braai grid has ever been cleaned (is that the job of incoming paying guests?). The braai tongs were grimy. Three half bricks were provided to place the braai grid. This is hard economic times, this is plain lazy and disrespectful of clients.
This accommodation is more like a shanty. The structure seems makeshift, the floors bare cement, the bathroom a disgusting hole in floor surrounded by galvanised tin. It is opposite the local tavern which is noisy till early hours of the morning. Absolutely disgusting place. Would not give it a single star! No wood provided either.
Room was cozy, loved the fireplace\braai inside.
Nooit gedink daar is so baie stories te hoor in begraafplase nie. 'n Moet weer gaan.
There was constant communication and we were warmly welcomed. There was a problem with the town's water, but the owners provided more than enough and informed us thoroughly what was for what. The houses were clean, warm and tidy inside walking distance from everything. Very well equipped! I was introduced to a jogging route to be able to see the most beautiful Karoo sunrise over the town! Definitely worth it, we'll see you again!
Very large rooms. We had the whole house to ourselves. We were treated very hospitably with excellent service.
The rooms are beautiful and well equipped. They also put a lot of effort into dealing with the water shortage as best as possible. Want to suggest they have Doom in the rooms. There were many mopeds. So much so that it was very intrusive.
Excellent service, clean, value for money.
Centrally located, walking distance to restaurants and the planetarium.
Wonderful stay under a breathtaking starry sky with tons of clean fresh air. Enough to recharge any soul.
Most friendly, clean, cosy, typical Karoo experience.
The town's planetarium is across the house. Although the SALT telescope was not available, we really enjoyed the show in town.
Wow where do I start, from my emails to our meeting Marita and Amanda were just wonderful. We immediately felt welcome. Amanda informed us a little about Sutherland and from there we were hardly ever at our cottage, went exploring everything. The accommodation was very clean and tidy there is nothing that I would like, everything is there that you need. Our queen size bed that they arranged for us was so comfortable and the bedding was so soft that when you lay down you almost didn't want to get up. Next time we come we will use the electric blanket, but it was too hot this weekend. The toilet and shower were comfortable and clean with nice big towels and the water restriction didn't bother us at all as we were informed ahead of time with booking so we did what we had to before the water was turned off. And the water was always boiling hot. The hostess put down a 5 l jug of water for us to drink or for coffee and also water for toilet flushing in the bathroom. The wood was already nicely packed for us in the fireplace and we sat around the fire and barbecued (meat of course from Paulsen Slaghuis you can taste those Karoo bushes in the meat) inside your own little house. Outside there is also a nice large braai area. We scooped up the ashes the next morning and threw them away and nothing smelled of fire or smoke. Your vehicle was safe. The location of the accommodation is also close to everything, the Planetarium is right in front of the house so you could walk around and was very safe to walk. We will definitely come back in the winter and will book again at Die Heks se Huis. Thanks again Marita and Amanda you will definitely see us again. We would recommend you to anyone. Greetings and love Tertia and James.
We had a good night's sleep; it was cold, but the room was lovely and warm. Electric blankets, lovely down duvets and, of course, the nicest fireplace where you could also braai. The best, however, was that it was right next to the planetarium and we walked there for stargazing. It felt safe to walk back 10:00 at night. The hostess gave us a friendly welcome and told us about everything on offer in Sutherland. Thank you!
Except for the wet wood in the fireplace.
We stayed in Artemis, it was a semi-attached self-catering unit at the very end and very private. Our unit consisted of 2 single beds with electric blankets on them, as well as very good quality white linen. The electric blankets were a nice treat and kept us warm with the cold from the snow. There is also a lovely large indoor braai/fireplace which we used to grill our meat as well as to keep the unit warm. Wood was provided for your first fire. A table and chairs to eat at, fridge, 2 easy chairs in front of the fireplace, microwave oven, fridge and a two plate gas unit (which we didn't use), kettle, as well as the necessary plates, cups, cutlery etc. to make it self-catering. The bathroom consisted of a toilet, sink and a shower. The water was soon deliciously warm when you showered. Water was only available at certain times, but the hostess provided drinking water and water for toilet flushing. The hostess was very friendly and WhatsApped us directions in advance, so you could easily find the accommodation. They are also dog friendly and accommodated our puppies. We were lucky to have snow the 2 days we were there and we really enjoyed it, it was beautiful. The accommodation was good and made your stay convenient and comfortable. There was also secure parking for your car. We can recommend Die Heks se Huis with certainty. We will stay there again, thank you to Die Heks se Huis for your friendly service.
Very safe. Calm and nice atmosphere that does the soul good.
Comfortable and spacious accommodation. Amanda is an incredibly hospitable hostess who provides you with all the necessary information to explore the village.
The house (Gaea) was clean and tidy. Marita converted the 2 single beds into a king bed at our request. Communication with us was good and very friendly from the start of the booking until our arrival. Check in was smooth and fast. Our puppy was also very welcome at Die Heks se Huis. The fireplace/braai in the cottages was fantastic in the cold. We and Bellatjie really enjoyed it.
The cottage is warm with its lovely fireplace, bedding clean and wonderfully warm. Would recommend it for sure.
The fireplace and the electric blankets were very welcome as it was very cold.
My dad and I had a quick and good time, the reception was the best I've ever had, even the follow up on why we had to leave the place so early. Many thanks to the hostess for everything she did for us and even the history we could receive from her mouth.
We had a great time in the house.
The accommodation is situated right in the centre of town - walking distance to basically everything. The hosts were great as well!
We were a little late, but were still warmly received. We were informed in detail about what is worth seeing in the area. Recommended places to eat and where to get supplies!
Friendly and helpful people. Setting is perfect for our needs.
The Witch's House provided excellent service, from booking to check-out. They were very helpful with any questions we had. We had a great time in Sutherland.
Fantastiese plek, het dit baie geniet.
Had a great time, nice and clean, will always recommend.
Near als in Sutherland. Clean, neat. Very friendly reception.
This was not my first trip to Sutherland, but my first time staying at Die Heks se Huis, and if a centrally located, creatively appointed, and self-contained stay is what you're after, this is ideal. Sitting on the stoep with a morning coffee or an evening drink is pure bliss. Located right behind the planetarium, you can glimpse activity on the main road and all shops/restaurants are walking distance. Lots of unexpected mosquitoes on this trip but a plug-in repellent unit did the trick. Interiors are simple, quirky and comfortable, classic Karoo spaces with creative touch. No wardrobes/bureaus for clothing, but wall hooks and drawers in bedside unit. A hotplate for cooking would be a useful addition, especially for longer stays. There was a microwave and the option to cook over the inside fireplace. Gas would be useful in case of power failures (which we had, but any trip to Sutherland should include a personal headlamp or torch, regardless). When the geyser in our section failed, manager Amanda could not have done more to keep us informed regarding repair progress, and promptly moved us to another unit when it was clear the problem was not a simple fix. A fantastic working mini-break, I look forward to the next at Die Heks.
Warm reception by people, passionate about the town and its things. Can highly recommend the visit to the witch and her team!
Marita is a hostess one thousand. The place is clean and very tidy. The bed and bedding are fantastic. The indoor grill a bonus.
The houses are well furnished, comfortable and centrally located. It has a cute porch where one can sit and relax in the early evening.
I can recommend this as a place to stay - the location is absolutely the best in the middle of the town behind the planetarium. There is no TV - how fantastic is that - you can talk to each other. There is fire place/braai inside the room - how fantastic is that. We were there in summer - the fan helped a lot but then you are in the Karoo so what do you expect - a cool sea breeze haha. Road to Frasersburg is a 8 out 0f 10 from there to Loxton a 5 out of 10 - mainly due to all the rain they had. So yes go there enjoy the people and the Karoo hospitality!
Good location, neat accommodation.
Super hospitable people, know their town's history and work hard to promote tourism.
Lovely stay, beautiful house decorated with care and love, and decorated in an artistic, quirky, alternative style. Very clean and comfortable, conveniently situated.
We were very kindly received at the gate of the premises. The Witch's House has all the necessary facilities to be able to stay comfortably for a few days. Place is neat and clean. Nice fireplace and outdoor barbecue. My only concern is the shower's water that accumulates so quickly. Thank you for allowing us to be in your part of the world for a while. It's beautiful there.
Central location is very convenient
Is it possible to put a mirror in the room by the wall plug? The knives are rusting, I suggest they be replaced with stainless steel. And can you upgrade the toilet paper to white please, single layer will do The indoor braai could do with something the grill can stand on. For the rest I can only compliment. Thank you very much.
It is a very cozy place and is equipped with everything one needs.
Great service, exceptionally clean, well located, very comfortable beds with crisp linen. Only issue was the smoke in the house from the fireplace. Chimney needs a proper cowl to extract smoke when making a fire.
Friendly & well equipped cottage. We and the dogs really enjoyed it.
We were under the impression we booked a unit with a fireplace so we could barbecue inside, however we got a larger unit but without an indoor barbecue. I suggest you specifically mention it when you book to avoid disappointment. We then went to have a delicious meal at Ou Meule on recommendation, very nice. Thanks for a quick one night nice visit.
We traveled through Sutherland and were able to find accommodation at short notice. The place is neat and right next to the planetarium.
Clean, tidy accommodation. Hostess very helpful. House very cutely furnished. Positive criticism: Would be nice if there were maybe electric blankets on the beds and a sort door instead of a shower curtain. Thank you, it was nice to stay with you.
Nice stay. Centrally located. Walking distance to Planetarium and shops. Friendly service.
Generally good.
The snow made up for the cold.
Beautiful clean linen, large tidy room with basic kitchenette.
Cottages were comfortable and have everything you need for an overnight stay.
Provide a tea bag and instant coffee or something. It would be nice to have a coffee before hitting the road again. The rest of Sutherland is interesting, but be prepared to pay for everything. Stargazing costs R150 pp. A family of 4 pays R600, and the money is taken without blushing. Been there done that. I left R2200.00 in Sutherland for a night's stay. Too expensive.
Pleasant, clean, centrally located accommodation next to Planetarium with a fireplace, which is rather important in Sutherland. Fully equipped for all one's requirements.
If you go to Sutherland, be sure to stop by Sterland Stargazing.
Is very centrally located! Very neat and cute! Will definitely stay there again!
Don't expect the normal but what an amazing experience. The owners were very helpful even though we were held up and arrived late. I do think we should have been warned of the water restrictions in Sutherland, not that it distracted from 2 very pleasant nights.
The accommodation was very neat, clean and has everything you need to enjoy your time. We would definitely recommend and will use the Witch's House again.
Our place was spotless with pure white bedding! We especially enjoyed the fireplace. Unfortunately we missed the stargazing due to cloudy weather, we'll have to go again!
The Witch's House is nice and cozy and in the middle of the town. I would only recommend that they clean the fireplace every morning. The ashes make the house smell like smoke.
The hostess, Amanda, was very good and helped us very well with directions and with our check-in at the Witch's House. The fireplace was unfortunately problematic, and we asked about it, but the wind was blamed, I'm sure the wind must blow often, so I recommend they look at the fireplace? We struggled with an awful lot of smoke, and we didn't even light the fireplace the second night. The rest was very good, but basic.
We enjoyed the one night in Sutherland. Older place with few amenities but perfect for a one or two night stay. Has all the basics you need (almost, could use a few more knives and one more pan and maybe another mixing bowl or two). Only complaints: ants everywhere in the kitchen and older toilet that flushes well sometimes and not so well at others. Otherwise very clean and dog friendly. Loved the decor and the fleece blankets on beds and next to couch for the wine tee nights but it kept the heat better than I expected! Shower is really cool! Hot water was great (even if drought limits the hours). Wonderful to have a few bags of tea and a few packets of sweetener and they have some drinking water for you and prepare you with a large tub of water for flushing when the water is turned off.
Very well received in cold, wet weather, with a nice basket full of wood waiting by the fireplace. Everything you need is there.
Disappointing comparison with other lodgings at the same rate.
It was a nice "cozy" stay. The only problem was the water situation which is not the guest house's only crisis but the whole of Sutherland due to the drought they are experiencing. Hopefully they get enough rain or snow to break the drought.
Was good, clean and fresh.
Overall we had a comfortable stay. However, the shower and sink were not that clean. It was a bonus to have electric blankets on the beds against the Karoo cold! Unfortunately, my husband's electric blanket did not work. A few extra mats on the cold cement floor would have been a bonus too.
The house is old and enchanting, but was not clean and the towels we were given were very worn. The owners' Boerboel barked on and off from 11 - 3 am so we got very little sleep, which put a dampener on the stay. And I know it was the Boerboel as I could see him out my bedroom window, which had no curtains on it - which was a little strange.
Toilet is not private and the house gives severe hay fever.
Will never stay there again - there are much better places in Sutherland.
Shower and washing facilities very poor. House smells bad - fireplace not properly cleaned.
Quirky little cottages which are dog friendly.
Large house with braai facilities and equipped kitchen. Wi-Fi. Had a great stay, will stay here again. Pool table wobbly and not level.
The Witch's house is well situated, pleasant to stay in and offers an exceptional view of Sutherland.
We got a golden reception. Hospitable. I would just suggest that maybe milk, dishwashing liquid, a sponge and washcloth be made available. Thank you very much!
Was pleasantly surprised by the Luna house. Simple, full of character and very comfortable. Marne and her team went out of their way to accommodate us.
The house is beautifully and practically furnished. It is centrally located. We could walk to the Planetarium, Louw Huis and beautiful NG Church. Upon our arrival, we were kindly received, and everything was clean and tidy. The car was safely parked next to our house. Nice hot shower, comfortable bed, simple kitchenette ready for a light meal, also fireplace, all in a quiet and peaceful environment.
Was easy to find and exactly what we needed. Decor is unique and beautifully clean. Wish we could visit longer.
The decor matches the place's name beautifully.
Very nice stay and location is great if you want to visit Sutherland. Fireplace, electric blanket and cute decor...what more could you want!
Was nice, clean and tidy.
Beautifully snowy, freezing cold, made a nice fireplace and slept cozy on a warm blanket. Filter coffee made with snow because water frozen in pipes. Nice hostess with lots of travel stories.
It is a nice quiet place, nice clean in town, the stargazing was an experience and enjoyed it. If I stayed longer I would miss my TV, it's quiet.
We got directions early on to drive comfortably to Die Heks se Huis. The hostess came to visit us and had a nice chat. Later on WhatsApp helped us with possible places to eat even though there was a complete guide with places and contacts available in the cottage. The bed was very very comfortable! We slept and visited safely and comfortably. Will definitely stay there again!
Ideal place to stay during a visit to Sutherland. Secure off-road parking and everything you need for a peaceful braai and evening sleep.
We had a great night at Die Heks se Huis. Would love to stay longer next time, everything needed was available and tidy. No TV, but we didn't even miss it!!
We were pleasantly surprised, cute place within walking distance of the most attractions.
Interesting decor, the witch theme in everything around you, really unique.
We will definitely stay at the Witch's House again if we are in the area again.
We really enjoyed our stay here. Beautiful decor.
Rooms very nice and adequately equipped.
We loved our little cottage full of clever little quirks. Being directly behind the planetarium was a bonus.
Great atmosphere and something completely different. Would recommend anytime.
Will stay there again.
We had a wonderful stay. We will definitely visit again.
Very cute place, with a warm welcome. Clean and comfortable! It will help if there is hand soap available in the bathroom and kitchen.
Immediately felt at home, unique place to stay, comfortable atmosphere, wonderful town and people.
See stars.
Very neat and clean. We couldn't find anything wrong, except the church bell that rings every hour, but it was something different for once, reminds one of one's childhood, real farm feel. Highly recommend.
Having fun with my friends around the beautiful fire pit. House is located close to everything so all basic necessities were easily available. Very peaceful atmosphere. we could set our watches to the ringing of the nearby church bell. One felt very safe and had no fear of leaving things such as chairs and other full items outside at the braai area. Thank you very much for the experience.
The house is very well equipped, clean and tidy. We made good use of the fireplace and the wood provided. The bedding is nice and warm and we didn't get cold, even though it was freezing outside. The beds in the attic are not for everyone, especially tall people have to walk around hunched up there to avoid bumping their heads. There is also only one power point upstairs and a bedside light will help a lot if you have to go to the toilet at night (which is downstairs). The light switch is by the stairs.
The weather was not so nice on our side, but the fireplace in the living area made for a very nice visit. The sleeping area is a bit on the inconvenient side, but overall we really enjoyed it!
At Observatory. Perfect for a night or two.
Nice place to sleep. Spacious and tidy.
This is a cottage with infinite potential. Not quite up to standard at the moment.
Unfortunately we missed the stars, were happy about the clouds and the little rain. It was our first but will again plan a special weekend for the stars! We would like to experience the snow but believe it will be a hive of tourists!
For 3 men there were no problems, but ladies would not manage in a bathroom without a decent sink. The double bed in the spare room sleeps like a dream, but makes noise that it bounces. There are also no chairs that one can use outside around the fire.
Very basic accommodation with the bare essentials. Would not recommend for more than one night stay alone. Beds, bedding and electric blanket of good quality.
The pictures of the exterior of main house are not of the accommodation offered. The room was very very hot - as a result of a tin roof sitting in the sun all day. It wasn't possible to cool the room down as loadshedding happened twice that night - something the host neglected to mention. The room was full of mosquitoes and there were no nets. No WiFi codes were provided. My colleague hardly got any sleep, and we were both bitten all over. Our host was nowhere to be found in the morning. While some pointsare not the fault of the host, it would have been nice to be told that they expected loadshedding (and the times), and if your property is infested with mosquitoes, why wouldn't you provide nets to your guests?
Floor dirty and broken. Bed was awful. No shower for 5 people. Fridge is rusted. No basin.
The single duvet on the bed didn't help much against the cold. A mat on the floor would also have helped to break the cold of the cement floor. There were no matches or lighters available to light the wood. The coffee that was available was meant for a "plunger" and that was nowhere to be found.
Only after you chat with some of the people, they are more approachable. Went out of our way to get out there and spend a few rand in town, if I stayed there I would be a lot friendlier! You are also uninformed about the environment and SALT is the biggest joke. Can do proper tours and inform the staff and the townspeople about it. All that is nice is the pub about 10 km out of town, at the old Toll Gate. Tjol's Pub is an experience. The Witch's House is sifted, as in dirt. Shower curtain is dirty and broken, to name just one thing, didn't even want to try showering in that place! Probably one of the worst guesthouses we have ever stayed in! The leg of the bed was also broken. When I look at the other Karoo villages where people are welcomed and tidy, they are a disappointment! Uncle Jurg's Starry Land is also something to see, although it was cloudy and cold and we couldn't look at the stars, our conversation was very nice. The so-called observatory in town is, in my opinion, a rip-off and they "steal" SALT's customers with false advertisements etc.
Terrible!
Had a wonderful stay. Wonderful reading material. Next time we will stay longer.
Decor simple, but so striking. Well done.
The house met our basic needs.
A perfect overnight venue for my purpose.
The Witch exceeded my expectations, it was wonderful to be there and I feel like a new person.
We are planning a trip like this again soon and will definitely stay overnight at Die Heks se Huis again, next time for more than just 1 night. We were kindly received and the rooms are clean and very original. We especially thought the fire in the room was pretty damn cute and later that evening we grilled meat in our room. 10 out of 10!
Friendly people who got the fireplace going before we arrived, was clean and cosy! I can stay here for a month and just read books, and I don't even read much.
Clean air and friendly town. Would recommend Die Heks se Huis anytime.
Quiet cottage with nice fireplace inside the house for the cold evenings!
The animals next door were a big treat!
Wonderfully quiet. Everything you need. Beautiful place.
The people in Sutherland are incredibly friendly and hospitable. The owner sent me voice notes with clear directions to our stay. We were also then warmly welcomed by another lady who took us to our home. Everything was neat and clean. And the house was wonderfully warm inside. Especially the shower works well and heats up very quickly. If you want to make a fire in the fireplace, just make sure you take wood with you. After 10 o'clock in the evening all the shops are closed. But we had a wonderful night's rest and would definitely recommend it to anyone going to Sutherland.
We had a great time at Heks se Huis, the horses next door who came to say hello were an extra plus point for any animal lover. Very neat little house, all the necessary kitchen equipment was available. The indoor barbecue is such a treat, especially on a cold evening, and the outdoor barbecue is even better if the weather permits. Beds were warmly covered with more than enough blankets, bathroom clean and tidy. All one can "complain" about is the walnuts that fall from the tree onto the corrugated iron roof when you want to take a nap. Otherwise, it is so conveniently located in the center of town, great for walking distance to various restaurants and places to visit. The planetarium right next door is definitely worth a visit. We will definitely stay again!
Everything you need was there. For Sutherland, hot water in winter is quite a thing. At Die Heks se Huis there was more than enough hot water and the water pressure very good.
Bedding was crisp, clean and nice and warm in the cold. House nice and clean, smelled a little like fire, but just opened the windows and the smell soon disappeared.
Nice place. Especially the comfort chairs and bedding of high quality.
The location of the accommodation is very convenient, just behind the planetarium within walking distance. The village is small and there are plenty of places to choose from. The food was very tasty and the people are friendly and happy to tell you about their town. A visit to the observatory was very informative and definitely worth it. Would love to visit again.
It was cold, but The Witch's House was wonderfully warm. Fireplace was a winner. Enough wood and bedding. Kitchen adequately equipped. Beds neatly clean and warm. Bathroom adequate. Recommendations: the one main light in the living room is too sharp and attention can be paid to the water outlet system of the shower and toilet. We really enjoyed our stay, location is perfect. Would recommend it for sure.
The photo is misleading. House without boiler. Neat and clean.
Basic. But neat. Shower curtain lacked.
See stars.
Was very pleasant, the fan that was in the house has no purpose as it is too small. Would have liked to have met the witch.
Heks se Huis Luna has most of the household amenities that are required. We did miss a braai tongs, which is used most nights. The staircase to the loft bedroom area though requires attention. A touch rickety and unstable. Beds were comfy and linen and towels clean and fresh. Outside braai area very pleasant. Overall a nice place to sit back chill and enjoy the Sutherland atmosphere.
Very cute place. Service just very poor.
We arrived in Sutherland on a bitterly cold weekend. Landlady showed us our accommodation, and said vaguely that there was a heater and fire place. We met friends for dinner, and returned freezing cold. There was no heater, no extra blankets, no electric blankets. We pushed the single beds together and threw duvets on top of each other. Even worse! Duvet interior is satiny and kept sliding off! Next morning owner was contacted, asked for heater and 2 blankets. Cleaner arrived with fan heater and 1 thin patchwork blanket (no inside blankets). I immediately went to the Pep store to buy fleece blankets. We went to buy other kind of wood because we were exhausted (thought our wood was too wet) but was just as bad 2nd night. The fireplace had no draft. It was extremely disappointing after we paid for self catering. We could get better service elsewhere for the same amount. And no, I refuse any feedback from the owner.
No service. We will never see the place again.
On a cold evening the fireplace was a big help! The outdoor barbecue is delicious and the bathroom is very nicely decorated. Slept very well and the house has everything one needs for a wonderful visit with loved ones. The house is clean and very tidy. And it's incredibly nice to wake up to a rooster crowing. The animals around the house are also very nice. Horses, dogs, sheep, chickens and lots of birds clattering in the trees! If someone wants to get away from the busy life of a city, this is the perfect place to switch off and just enjoy the tranquility.
Marne of Die Heks se huis was very friendly and helpful, so we had a good stay and slept under a lovely feather duvet. Everything was really pleasant. Thanks so much. Will see you again.
Sleeps 4 people in one room. Nice dogs and horses visit in the morning. Would be nice if someone could wash the dishes, make the beds and put more wood on the fireplace!
Very good service and would highly recommend. Nice fireplace for the cold and wood was provided.
The house that we stayed in is right next to the church in Sutherland. Everything we needed was there, even though the sugar container was empty and not a lot of coffee. We will definitely stay there again. The fireplace inside is great for the cold evenings.
Nice accommodation for a winter breakaway.
Although simple, it is good value for money and conveniently located.
Cute place that is well equipped for an overnight stop. Nice and cosy with a fireplace.
Die Heks se Huisie offers all the usual facilities and is simply but practically designed with enough space for four guests with luggage. The cottage is well located within easy walking distance of all the town's shops and restaurants. It provides a convenient base from which to explore the entire area. Just a pity we could not make any contact with the owner to report an apparently temporary problem with water pressure.
The accommodation is centrally located. Friendly owner. The little house just needs a few more finishing touches - nothing serious though. Not the best shower. One has to be very aware of the roof beams in the upstairs bedroom and very careful on the staircase.
The house is very cute. The dilemma is that I was traveling with my elderly parents and my father (76) could not manage the stairs. He ended up sleeping downstairs on the couch.
