This restored pioneer cottage dated 1881 is closest to the river and nestled on an outcrop at the foot of the Swartberg. It has a stunning view of the nearby river and mountains.
This cottage can comfortably accommodate a total of 4 guests at a time and comprises a bedroom and a bathroom. The bedroom is furnished with a double bed and the bathroom is fitted with a shower, washbasin and toilet. There are 2 single beds in the lounge area. All linen and towels are provided.
Additionally, this cottage has a kitchen equipped with a gas stove and fridge, cutlery and crockery as well as tea- and coffee-making facilities. This space also has a dining space and a lounge area with comfortable seating and plenty of books to read. This cottage has no electricity so hot water is provided by a gas heater and solar lamps are provided. This kitchen leads to a large veranda with an outside braai area.
The farm overlooks and includes the Gamka River. Guests can participate in a wide range of activities such as hiking, swimming, canoeing, mountain biking and birdwatching. Located nearby is the Bôjaanskop 4x4 Route. The district offers thermal springs, ostrich farms, the Cango Caves, Seweweeks Poort, Groenfontein-Kruis River Road, the Red Stone Hills, Gamkaberg Provincial Nature Reserve, Rooiberg Pass and the Swartberg Pass.

The accommodation offers lovely secluded accommodation away from any noise, light or electro pollution! The kitchen is excellently equipped and the solar power and gas work well. Our host and hostess were very helpful.
Comfortable apart from the heat, but the river, birding, and mountains, and Jenny & Jan were cool!

Die Poort Private Nature Reserve is at the end of the road where the Gamka River exits the Swartberg having flowed from the Great Karoo past Die Hel. We were privileged to find the river flowing strongly. Fig Tree Cottage is surrounded by mountains - you're all on your own except for hosts Jenny and Jan who stay further along the road. Take your loadshedding lights with you - the solar-powered lights are not great and it's very dark at night. If solitude is not your thing, Die Poort Private Nature Reserve may be an imposition. If you long for a break from the rat race try Die Poort Private Nature Reserve - it's not a one-night stop. Spend time on the farm and recreate. The water supply was wonderful! Crystal-clear mountain water from a spring which seems never to have run dry. Thank you to Jenny, Jan and the Rabie family for sharing this beautiful place.
Very neat, comfortable basic amenities. We had a great stay!
We just struggled with the geyser. The owner was very helpful but we could not shower in hot water. The solar lights did not work but there was a flashlight and fairy light.
Fig Tree cottage is a lovely place to stay, well equipped and clean. The lighting in the cottage and annex is poor, make sure you bring additional lighting. The walking route in Steering's Kloof (it took us 3 hours) is definitely worth it!

There is no electricity inside the cottages. We provide mostly solar lamps and/or rechargeable lamps. Please handle any candles with care. There is no cell phone reception on the farm or in the valley. Limited WiFi is available at the main house.Bookings will be confirmed upon receipt of the 50% deposit, booking form (which we'll send) and copy of your ID. The final 50% is to be paid 1 week before arrival. If bookings are made within a week of arrival, we require a 100% deposit. Bookings are made on a first-paid, first-served basis. Bookings need to be confirmed at least 2 days in advance so we can make necessary arrangements in time.
