103 guests' feedbackWe had a very nice stay. Steynskraal see you again soon.
It really felt like home. Everything was perfect, it was like visiting a farm with family. Fresh fruit, rusks, freshly baked bread, their barbecue packs were awesome. A leisurely walk taken after a long drive. It was very cold, warm blanket was a lovely surprise.
Stay was too short, will definitely stay for longer next time.
I requested a TV to watch rugby, that was arranged. Additional braai packs, soup, and homemade bread were also purchased (the bread was delicious). The atmosphere was fabulous! We could also buy very decent wine from their small shop. I would request that a wood-fired tub heater be added to the small plunge pool; that would really round off the place! Can't wait for another trip to spend a few nights there.
Steynskraal is a real oasis in the Karoo with lush grounds and neatly maintained historical farm cottages. We stayed in Die Skooltjie, which was very comfortable and has a well-equipped kitchen and braai area. The hosts provided a delicious soup and braai pack for our dinner.
The most perfect and ideal Karoo experience! The best reception by the owner himself. The accommodation is top notch with the most beautiful furniture, Africana and most comfortable beds, the quality bathroom and kitchen equipment!
Karoo place nests.
Could rest well for and well located between Jhb and Cpt.
Lovely lovely and very comfortable.
We loved the School and the decor and facilities were excellent. Will come back again anytime. Nicely close to the N1 but far enough so that you don't hear noise.
Beautiful oasis with a delicious treat of a freshly baked bun and butter. The hostess thought of everything and more. Lovely farm atmosphere!
We were greeted with a freshly baked bread! The oasis in the arid Karoo where no effort is too much. The most beautiful sunset and sunrise and the beautiful stars somewhere in between.
Truly exceptional!
Really for sure the best place I have ever stayed. Karoo remains the best. Will visit again for sure. Thank you very much indeed.
Amazing stay after a long day on the road.
Freshly baked farm bread awaited us. Friendly, fresh Karoo air, soft linen and towels, deliciously warm hearth, cupboards, windmill, train track and bookshelf packed with Afrikaans reading material. Would love to visit Roepman again!
Very nice stay, rest for the soul.
Steynskraal was truly a hidden gem outside Beaufortwes. After a long day of travel and 40 degrees outside, this guest farm with its air-conditioned units and brand new pool was a welcome relief. Thank you for the kindness with which we were received. This is for sure our new overnight stop.
These are probably the most pleasant overnight facilities in the entire Karoo. We stayed in "Die Skooltjie". The friendly owners made us feel at home with their hospitality, freshly baked bread, jam and complimentary wood. The facilities are fully equipped with everything one might need. We will spend the night there for sure. Great!
Steynskraal Gasteplaas was a festival to stay at, unexpected luxury in the Karoo, with particular attention to detail. The host and hostess give personal attention.
We loved everything about this beautiful destination. Most beautiful decor and luxurious sleeping place. Delicious barbecue packs with everything we needed and spoiled with a freshly baked bread. Perfect for small children too with lots of space and cute animals to see. Wouldn't change a thing and definitely stay longer next time.
Will stay here again and again! It's the little things that make the place more than just a 5/5.
Beautiful in Beaufort-West didn't lie. Steyskraal is like an oasis in the Karoo! If you ever find yourself in the Beaufort-West area and looking for a place to sleep, this is the place for you. From friendly arrival, beautiful accommodation and even a child-friendly farm atmosphere, it cannot be described well. Also remember to place your order for their most delicious chicken satays for your barbecue. In addition, we were spoiled with a delicious freshly baked bread. You exceeded our expectations and we will definitely see you again! Thank you very much Steyskraal for the wonderful stay at the little school!
What a wonderful and special experience! Clean, peaceful and blissful for the soul. You will definitely see us again!
Steynskraal Gasteplaas welcomed us with freshly baked bread on the kitchen table, together with delicious jam and farm butter - absolute treat. The house is of quality and certainly catches my eye. It was nice to be able to go home there from the city with the sounds of the farm, fresh air and stars enveloping you during the night.
Nice swimming hole for the children.
Everything about the farm looked like something out of my dream holiday home. Everything was nice and clean and good quality. The owners were very friendly and helpful, we felt very welcome! The farm is beautiful, quiet and definitely nice for someone from the city who needs a little calm in their life. I actually wanted to stay there!
I have no words to describe my stay. 5-Star accommodation! You can't get better. Quiet, calm, clean, warm and more. Everything down to the finest detail was just perfect! Keep up the good work, JC and team!
JC was a warm host who even surprised us with a freshly baked bread. The Skooltjie was nicely furnished, our beds were warm and our barbecue patio with a view of the Karoo landscape made our stay feel more like a holiday than an overnight stop. Can highly recommend it.
Old-fashioned decor fits 100% with the farm atmosphere. Excellent value for money. Friendly people!
The accommodation was neat and clean and tidy. The hostess and her family received us warmly. The surroundings contribute to a wonderful atmosphere.
Nice reception and very hospitable.
The School is top class accommodation. It is a beautiful and safe environment. Everything is there that one could need. Delicious bedding, delicious braai facilities, delicious farm atmosphere. Something to look forward to on the long road to the Cape!
Beautiful setting. Highest quality of everything from Egyptian cotton bedding to Victorinox cutlery. The friendliest dogs, cats and farm animals. Will definitely be back!
We loved our stay at Die Skooltjie. Such friendly, lovely hosts. We so enjoyed the peace & quiet away from the busy city. Will definitely go back.
Laetitia, Jos together with Gerrit and Nadja were excellent hosts. We are very spoiled. Will see you again for sure.
Nadja is a wonderful hostess, home-baked bread on arrival, real farm feel. "Die Stal" is beautiful, spacious and tidy! Definitely sleep there again.
Typical Karoo experience. Silence, old-world charm, delicious barbecue suits and the coziest atmosphere.
Have a great trip after a long journey! The pool was lovely to cool off in. Next time we will stay longer. Thank you for your hospitality.
The area, beauty and the accommodation were excellent. Well done to the owners. We will definitely stop there again next year.
We really enjoyed our overnight at this delightful, cosy cottage. It is very comfortable with all amenities provided, including dry firewood and braai grid. We will be back.
We enjoyed the Karoo hospitality!
Lower green lawns with farm animals everywhere. Absolutely top class accommodation, attention to the finest detail with a lovely bed for a good night's rest.
It was definitely one of our nicest vacation spots ever. The Karoo's magnificent beauty. The friendliness of the owners can certainly not be found anywhere else. The place is so cozy and well furnished. Our walks through the field were delightful. Will definitely visit them again.
The School will definitely see us again. One of the nicest, most beautiful, neatest, friendliest and quietest overnight stays ever. Unbelievable!
Unfortunately, we were only at Die Skooltjie one night. It is so peaceful on the farm, and the cottage is beautiful and well equipped. The owners are incredibly hospitable. I would recommend Die Skooltjie any day.
The Skooltjie feels like a real farmhouse with the most beautiful detail in every room. The kids couldn't get enough of all the farm animals! They could be real children in the mud of the pond. We had a nice walk around the farm. The Skooltjie is a must if you are in that area.
Had a great sleep over. Hospitable.
Here you can listen to the chirping of the birds and the call of the turtle doves. See how the mother finch brings food to her babies and screams at the opening of the nest. How the rooster attacks the kitten for venturing into their territory. The soft cry of the angora goats and at shearing time their anxious cry as they look at you sheepishly. The monotonous turning of the windmill in the breeze, little clouds gathering together and you hope and pray together for rain. And at sunrise you welcome the new day with a mug of steaming nut coffee and home-baked biscuits. The little school is everything and more than you desire. Silver clean, neat and very tasteful. A wish-I-could-stay-here-forever cottage.
Exceeded all our expectations!
The cottage is perfect with a strong farm feel. The pond with ducks at the braai. The cleanliness. The detail. Leatitia and Jos are fantastic people. The fountain on the farm is a must see. Never dry for 100 years. Great stay!
What a wonderful relaxation to make the long road shorter. I recommend this place.
We had a wonderful stay at Die Skooltjie. We were warmly received and pampered. The farm animals were an experience for our little girl and the house is luxuriously furnished.
This cabin has everything you could possibly need, plus all the "magic" you want to experience when you travel. Yet there is nothing pretentious, just genuine, earthy and honest elements. So authentic and beautiful; it was an experience that made my Karoo heart beat warmly. We highly recommend this gem.
We had a great time there, neat, clean and hospitable people! Landscape has a charm and the silence well deserved!
What a little gem, the old house with thick walls, beautiful wooden furniture - all on a farm away from the noise of the N1, and there is air-conditioning. Laetitea and Jos are great hosts, happy to chat and share about the Karoo, and the farm animals are gorgeous. From the geese swimming in the dam to the little lambs and chickens. It was only an overnight stay, but it would be great for a retreat away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
What an experience! Friendly welcome and the cleanliness excellent. Only thing we regret is not staying another day or 2!
Cozy place, very neat. Linen is crisp fresh. Children had fun swimming. Cute that flash and wood were ready for grilling.
The little school from 100 years ago has been carefully and characterfully transformed into a lovely place to sleep. Just when you think you've seen all the creativity, you notice something else that amazes you. It was really an experience. From fresh roses in a pot next to the bed, the fireplace in the living room with more than enough firewood to the cozy made up beds. Everything speaks of a love and care for the strangers who make themselves at home there from time to time.
Very nice accommodation in a very beautiful and peaceful environment. The dirt road to the establishment is in a bad condition just to keep in mind if you were to travel by car but the accommodation itself is excellent.
The place is neat and welcoming. The people are hospitable and make you feel very welcome.
Great stop over from Joburg to Garden Route. The cottage is clean and well equipped.
Peace and quiet. The comfort of the open air.
The tranquility of the Karoo, with beautiful stars.
Beautiful location with friendly, thoughtful people.
The farm is located a few kilometers off the N1 dirt road. Just far enough to make you feel like you're visiting a Karoo farm. A true Karoo farm experience with stars and silence that is sometimes interrupted by the sounds of farm life and farm animals, which then only accentuates the silence of the surroundings. Recommended for any lovers of farm life, the Karoo and the hospitable people of the Karoo.
Would like to relax there for a few days. Friendly neat Karoo hospitality.
We arrived a little late and when we got there the fireplace was already burning and lights were on for us. Everything was nice and tidy. Fresh biscuits were provided. Furthermore, we enjoyed the lovely view, nice little porch with a braai and farm sounds during the day and also the starry sky in the evening was special. Was able to walk around and enjoy the surroundings.
What a pleasant experience. Karoo hospitality at its best. Owners go out of their way to make guests feel welcome and at home. Old world charm brings rest to the soul again. The children really enjoyed the animals and the trip on the horse. Will definitely visit again.
Karoo always draws us back for us to realize again how the dear Father created als. Hard world, but so much life if you stop and look a little deep. Die Skooltjie also takes you back to the past. Wish the walls could talk and tell stories.
Hospitable, very beautiful, very neat and very tasty.
Wonderful and personal hospitality. Felt so at home and had a great time with both Lateitia and Josh who go out of their way to make sure guests are happy. Beautiful old cottage, very nice and tidy with so many extras. Visit more than one night.
Next time also sleep longer than an evening!
We were pleasantly surprised with this beautiful cottage on a farm outside Beaufort West. Quiet and clean accommodation for a reasonable price.
It is such a beautiful place. The owners are so friendly. They make one feel important and make sure we have everything we need. Is always available. I definitely recommend them.
This is definitely the best destination we have ever stayed at. It was an experience! Neat, clean, unique, friendly reception, beautiful views with beautiful people. We will definitely visit again. Thank you so much for all your effort and hospitality.
Had an honest evening at Die Skooltjie. Very nice farm, got an opportunity to milk the lambs. Very friendly owners. Will visit again.
Best stay ever!! Thank you very much for all the hospitality, the beautiful, peaceful unit. Very nice rest and relax! Be blessed!
It was a wonderful getaway for us as a group of friends to stay at Die Skooltjie. The place is such a piece of heaven on earth, where you see the Karoo at its most beautiful! We were spoiled with the most beautiful sunrise and especially enjoyed the farm kitchen and the fire place while the geese in the cement pond swam right next to us. The only disappointment was that we had to say goodbye again so soon. Can't wait to go back again.
We really enjoyed it and the owner spoiled our little girl to feed the animals!
We experienced the School very pleasantly. The place is nice and clean and the facilities make it a really enjoyable Karoo stop. Nice braai area outside and also fireplace inside for the cold evenings. Reception was friendly and warm.
We loved the history of the building and how beautifully it has been renovated and maintained. The wood burning stove is awesome. Such a peaceful, quiet setting. The hot and cold tap markers show the thought that has gone into the building and made us giggle. Very friendly hosts!
A thousand thank yous for everything! It was incredibly fun and a very pleasant change of scenery! Steynkraal and the little school is a gem of a place! See again!
A place with a heart, nothing is neglected. We didn't expect so much character and detail. It was an excellent choice to stay there. Can highly recommend it.
Die Skooltjie is a must to stay at. The site is very neat and the house is equipped with everything you might need, and more! Every detail is thought of. On arrival, the wood stove was already burning, which was a treat! I would definitely recommend Die Skooltjie to anyone, especially if you have children. The male calf kept us company while we were roasting outside, and there are several other farm animals right on your back porch. We will visit again!
Was very nice. It's a very nice place, you immediately feel at home at Die Skooltjie.
One of our most enjoyable overnight destinations yet! Pure farm stay and hospitality from the upper shelves. It felt like home and Laetitea and Jos went out of their way to make the accommodation extra special, even if it was only for one night. Wish we could stay longer!
It was lovely to rest there after a very long drive. Laetitia and Jos are very hospitable and the accommodation is very comfortable and beautiful and stylish. I definitely want to go again.
Wow, what a privilege to visit Jos and Laetitia at Die Skooltjie! This building of more than 100 is so well equipped and beautifully made. Lovely kitchen, softest bedding and towels that smell nice for days! The new iron stove works like a bomb and makes the cottage warm with its wooden pieces as big as Duplo cubes! Outside braai fireplace so nicely sheltered on the veranda against the cold Karoo wind, with the old pepper tree tightly against the wall of the old building. And what a pleasure it is that the 3 Musketeers come to say hello: Rosie, the cow, Klapper the sheep and Kallie the calf. A must to sleep over, at least 3 nights, heading north. Then drive around for 2 days in the Karoo Park as it is just 21 km away.
Very friendly hospitable people. Neat and we slept very well. Quiet farm atmosphere. Will definitely stay there again.
If you don't want to feel caged in a guest house with other people, then Die Skooltjie is for you. As soon as you leave the N2 and follow the winding path your farm experience begins. The Skooltjie cottage is about 100 m from the farmstead. Jos and Laetitia receive you warmly. The grass in front of the house is as green as in the picture, you just want to lie flat on your back and take it all in. The interior has a nice rustic feel and the decor is stylish. The back porch is a lovely place to visit that screams braai with the farm dam according to you. As the sun sets, the Karoo envelops you in her charm. The sky is full of the brightest stars and you enjoy the spectacle with the complimentary singing of the bugs. As the sun rises, the typical farm sounds of waking up are very reassuring. I would easily stay quietly at Die Skooltjie for a few days and not just overnight. So, pack your books and pens and paper and go enjoy a school experience like few others.
What a wonderful time we had. The children rode horses, played with a hanslammer, fed geese and had an incredible time. Jors was the perfect host. We barbecued under the stars, with the sounds of the Karoo around us. Everything had been perfect. We will definitely stay here again.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and were actually sorry that it was only for one night. The historic place is excellently furnished, neat, clean and everything and more you need. We were received very kindly and felt very special with all the extras that were available to us. The silence and beauty of the surroundings really impressed us. We actually can't wait to sleep over there again.
It was one of the most memorable places I have ever visited. The host and hostess are incredibly friendly and helpful and the salt of the earth people. Location on the farm is perfect. We as a family have only stayed one night here and I will recommend The School any time. I will definitely visit again if I am in the area. Thank you Jos and Laetitea, hope to see you again soon.
It was a wonderful experience to stay there, the skies were something to behold, and the silence was only interrupted by sheep, geese and chickens, which were a feast. We also had the opportunity to swim in a cement dam with the fish and geese. The accommodation is truly fully equipped for self-catering and relaxing. I will definitely stay there again if I drive in that direction and can definitely recommend the places to any person who loves nature and loves it. The reception was excellent and all our needs were taken care of. Hope to visit you again someday. Thank you again, you have absolutely a place in the Karoo. Good luck and all the best.
Beautiful and very neat farming. Best mutton chops we've had in a long time!
Friendly welcome. Accommodation very neat. Will stay there again.
I recommend that anyone traveling to and from the Cape via Beaufort West should stay overnight at Die Skooltjie. It will enrich you as a person. I can't say more. Go and see for yourself. You will never regret. And I took the most beautiful pictures of my life there. And if you like a mutton chop, please buy a few from the landlady to grill there that evening.
A wonderful getaway for the tired soul with beautiful clean and neat amenities. The hostess and host are ready to have everything perfect for travellers arriving. Everything is clean and working perfectly, and the private braai facilities make for a wonderful relaxing event. Would love to go down there for a few days. However, one should be aware that the 5 km gravel road to the site can be a challenge for lower types of cars, but not completely inaccessible - just drive slowly and carefully.
Very friendly, everything you need, just a piece of dirt road to get to the cottage.
A wonderful stay on the long road between the North and the Cape! Not just the fantastic facilities, but also a Karooplaas experience and top notch hospitality. The sheltered braai area and firepit call for long walks under the stars. We will definitely go back for a full winter break to better explore the area and especially the fossils. We recommend the Little School without any reservation!
Wonderful hospitality and a lot of attention paid to small things to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The delicious Karoo toast is a must and the tranquility of a Karoo farm is just what is needed after a long journey!
We really enjoyed the wonderful hospitality of Jos and Laetitea. I can recommend the food pack with lamb chops. Chops have just the right amount of fat. Karoolam stays on top. Keep in mind there is a 4 km dirt road to the accommodation.
