Thank you very much for your hospitality, we felt at home as soon as we stepped inside. Accommodation was great and communication was also great, was kept up to date with changes and any news all the time. Thanks everyone, we've been to heaven and back.
We were at Die Groenhuis for the third time. This time my sister and brother-in-law from Graaff-Reinet were with us, and we had Die Stal as a whole - kitchen and all - at our disposal. Everything was complete, comfortable and tidy. We received a friendly and hospitable welcome and service.
The Stable is a beautifully restored three bedroom house. Each room with an en-suite bathroom where one can comfortably spend much longer than just one night with close friends or family. Jens sent a lot of information in advance which helped a lot with how to drive, what to expect, about the town, where to eat, etc. and accommodated us when we had to change the date of our stay twice. Thembi received us very kindly. We had a delicious meal at the Pitstop and our dog was also very welcome there as at Die Stal. We will definitely stay there again. In our bedroom and in the kitchen were lights that came on during load shedding. It helped a lot when we wanted to leave early in the morning during load shedding and is a thoughtful addition to the stay.
What a perfect stopover. We chose to use the braai facilities but the smell of dinner being prepared in the kitchen was mouthwatering. Jens was informative with lots of insight sent via Whats App prior to our arrival. The staff were warm and friendly and the accommodation was superbly clean. Would highly recommend Die Stal to anyone travelling back from Cape Town and looking for a quiet rest over far enough away from the main road but close enough to access again in the morning.
Had a great stay. The house has everything one needs. Nice barbecue, stargazing and relaxing. Jens went out of his way to accommodate any request. All the information he sent through was so interesting. Staff also very friendly. Will definitely stay there again.
We were really surprised at Die Stal. It was neat, big and spacious with everything we needed. The bit of history at the old building and village was the icing on the cake.
Had a great stay and experienced good service from the team at Groenhuis.
The stable is a beautiful place full of memories and it feels like you are sleeping in a monument. The book written by the owner was very interesting.
Our overnight stay at Die Stal was very neat and comfortable. Old historic stable converted into accommodation. Plus dog friendly with large fenced lawn. Nice braai facilities. Only downside was the poor condition of roads to and from Philippollis.
We had an incredible time at Die Stal. The cottage is absolutely beautiful and the peace and quiet was exactly what we needed after a long drive from Cape Town. We will definitely stay here again.
Expect friendly service and very neat accommodation! I highly recommend any of the Green House's accommodation options.
We may have been there less than 24 hours but what a fantastic place. It's really what one's soul needs, next time we'll stay longer. My dogs enjoyed the farm life.
We spent the night here, and find the village very cute and rich with history. The guest house is very stylish and comfortable; and the owner grew up in the town himself, and is very helpful. The food from their restaurant was also top notch and is highly recommended!
We recommend Die Stal.
Very nice quiet environment. Delicious food. Accommodation is modern with the old - very nice! Great quiet sleep and lovely farm atmosphere.
Hosts are charming, interesting and incredibly welcoming. The gardens are very well-maintained and the pride of the owners is very evident. Will be coming back every year.
Instead of sleeping over in Colesberg again, I decided to spend a night in Philippolis. It was unfortunately already late, but I was pleasantly surprised with my reception at Die Stal, and wish I could visit a little longer! Beautifully tidy, the people so friendly and the facilities fantastic.
It's a very cute setup and we had a great time staying and visiting! They put in a lot of effort!
We extended our stay because the reviews were good and there was enough space for our family. We needed the gated garden especially as our dogs are big. We had a lovely Karoo meal and warm beds heated by electric blankets. The dishes were done for us without requesting so and had fresh towels delivered. Jens and his team arranged a bath for our children in a separate unit. We received great comms with updates on the weather and attractions around Philippolis. Thank you for a lovely stay.
Jens communicated with us in advance in detail and very efficiently. Access roads to Philippolis' condition become problematic (potholes). The Stable has been fantastically upgraded to a facility that offers everything for visitors. The colorful and beautiful old furniture and other antiques and books create a fantastic atmosphere. The reception was warm. The staff is very friendly and helpful. We chose the dinner option and were overwhelmed with a delicious, very large portion of farmer's food. The power outages were disruptive, but sufficient emergency lights were provided. The very informative book about Philippolis, written by the owner himself, was fascinating and offers a wonderful picture of the town, its history, the people, attractions locally and in the area. We plan to visit the Stable again to visit all the attractions. Our bed had quality bedding, but the creaking and noisy wooden floors were all that bothered us. WiFi at the living unit will help a lot. Thanks for a great stay!
Jens, owner of Die Stal, forwarded a whole lot of interesting and useful bits of information about Philippolis and the accommodation, as well as the best ways to get there. Furthermore, he contacted us regularly to keep us informed about our stay. The Stable house is full of interesting, antique pieces and publications. During load shedding, there were flashlights available and any problems were quickly sorted out. The bathrooms are spacious and clean and the beds very comfortable. This is definitely a place to visit if you like to explore our smaller towns.
We were received very kindly by the staff. The dinner was very nice. The place is neat and clean and is within walking distance of the town.
We (2 adults, 1 pooch) loved everything about our stay here. The hosts are very friendly and accommodating, the property is gorgeous with a magical garden. We absolutely loved our supper too. Would highly recommend it.
So creatively and tastefully decorated. The hospitality and associated service is more than expected: forwarding the week's expected temperatures; contact details of possible activity including a meal on Old Christmas Eve.
Perfect place to stay, I could have stayed another week! Was lovely to hear the windmill, quite a lot to see in Philippolis and stargazing is a must! Definitely see you again.
Very neat facilities. Beautiful bedrooms!
Comfortable accommodation and pet friendly! Large fenced yard for our dogs to roam around. We only stayed one night on the way to Cape Town and were generously received by Madelein. We drove out to Waterkloof and on our return there were treats on the patio table - very unexpected and very tasty! I will stay again on a next visit and explore the area more after the wonderful book of Jens depicting the history.
Our arrival was already a treat. We received a warm welcome with sherry and biltong snacks. The host-owner was friendly and professional. The house is absolutely artistic with wooden floors and antique furniture. Artistic with so much extra comfort and things. There were naartjies on the table and nice rusks. A lot of types of coffee and tea and even my favourite, Earl Grey tea. The bathroom is picture-perfect with a slipper bath. The water is warm. There is a windmill on the farm. I truly wish all people could experience this loveliness.
Nicely decorated and newly renovated. Super clean. Great and friendly staff welcome. Very attentive and very helpful. Nice tough to have books in the room related to the Karoo and area.
I had a great time staying in the cottage. The location (on the edge of town) is ideal for giving you the "farm feel" without having to drive miles on rough dirt roads to reach your destination. The view, starry sky and pleasant patio make it a unique and very pleasant experience.
The rural visit took us back to bygone times. The Homestead is artistically furnished and the garden a real oasis. Dinner, as arranged in advance, was tasty and filling. The host, Jens Friis, and his team helped us continue to enjoy our trip comfortably and relaxed. Linen and towels pure white and house neat and clean. The tarmac road there is also in good condition.
Serenity in every way. Wonderful food! See you again soon.
It was a wonderful experience. Will definitely go again and want to stay longer this time.
We had an overnight stay at die Stal and it was perfect! So clean and neat. Jens was hospitable and made sure we were settled in. The lady at die Groenhuis was also lovely and friendly when we went to get the keys. We enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back. A big thank you!
Immediately upon arrival I tried to arrange another night's stay, much to my dismay we were 15 minutes late. We didn't want to pack up, it was heavenly.
Peaceful`place. Food good. Great swimming pool.
Enjoyed the chickens, geese and other birds on the site. Comfortable rooms with great bathrooms with plenty of hot water. Will visit there again.
Excellent service. Nice quiet. Feel free to do so. Animals were well treated, everyone was pampered.
Stayed and ate very well.
Very neat and clean, quality bedding, and ideal to break away from the busy city life.
Warrants more than just one night - will stay longer soon.
Very friendly people. Clean and tidy. It's a must!
One night is just not enough, will have to go again. The food was excellent and the hospitality top notch.
Philippolis is a charming town and Die Stal a lovely place to spend the night. There were fresh farm eggs in the kitchen, and Elsa once again provided a delicious plate of food for dinner. Hope I can stay longer next time.
We had a great stay, can definitely recommend!
The host was very helpful, friendly and made us feel at home. The house is beautifully furnished, with beautiful antiques, but tasteful and has everything you need. The farm atmosphere was a nice bonus and our dogs had a great time running around. I can definitely recommend Die Stal.
Good value. very neat place. Karoo hospitality. Beautiful village.
Beautiful brand new place, designed with exactly everything one needs for a stopover and even longer stay. Furniture and all equipment speak of good taste and high quality. Ideal for a family with a pet.
We stayed here during our journey from Bloemfontein to Cape Town. A slight departure from the N1, but the roads leading to and from Philippolis were well maintained at the time of our visit. Jens personally came to say hello and walked through the house together to explain where everything was. An extremely experienced host with in-depth knowledge of the area (as can be seen in the coffee table book in the house which bears his name as author). The Stable is a beautifully restored building, spacious and clean with all the necessary facilities for self-catering. The crisp white linen and thick duvets over each bed are a nice treat. The highlight, however, is the silence and peace experienced when one can sit on the porch late in the afternoon and watch the late afternoon sky turn into a starry night. We definitely recommend Die Stal!
Die Stal is perfect. It is clean and has ample space. We enjoyed sundowners on the stoep and had a lekker braai. Would highly recommend this spot. The stoep is enclosed and perfect if travelling with pets. Jens is a hospitable host. If you would like to know more about the town, Jens is the right guy to talk to.
Uncle Jens a real gentleman, had such a nice chat, the house is spotless and very tidy, lacked nothing, decor very interesting and beautiful.
Very very amazing place. Would like to stay longer to see the place.
Our host was very pleasant and helpful. The accommodation is superbly appointed. It is very clean and neat.
Lovely historic town and residence with a wonderful host and peaceful farm atmosphere!
This was our second stay-over, Die Stal is a lovely home with all necessary comforts catered for.
Jens was a friendly and wonderful host. Unfortunately we had load shedding and the water went down as well. It made things a little difficult with small children. We would definitely recommend The Stable and stay there again.
With the windmill in the garden, we will always remember Die Stal. Although the kitchen/living area needs attention, the fact that we were able to sleep well made up for it. Cozy with rain on the tin roof was special.
It was a privilege to go home in Die Stal. The unit is very well equipped and charming with old world furniture, wall stories and lots of country character. Thank you very much for the nice experience!
The accommodation was impeccably clean and tidy. The furniture took us back in time, what an experience. The silence and country atmosphere is indescribable. Thank you Jens for the hospitality, what an experience, we will definitely see you again.
Jens was a great host. He left information about the area which was very interesting. The place was sparkling clean and unique. We thoroughly enjoyed our overnight stay. Thank you very much.
We were immediately received kindly, Mr Friis very pleasant, accompanied us to our accommodation, explained everything and left us to rest. Can't ask for better.
Accommodation is comfortable and very tidy. The owner was very friendly and shared interesting stories with us. We bought the most delicious mutton tails and mutton chops from the Philippolis Karoo Deli, which we grilled that evening at the guest house.
It's a nice rustic farm house. The owner is very friendly and made us feel at home.
It is a unique, spacious old farmhouse that makes you long for your grandma and grandpa. Very friendly reception.
If you are looking for something that is not on the main road and where you can hear and feel the silence Die Stal is a perfect choice, would really like to stay more than just one night. Beautiful home, friendliness of the owner was fantastic, immediately kicked off shoes and just lingered. Delicious fried. Will stop there again for sure. Thank you!
After a long day on the way back from our holiday in the Cape, we arrived at Die Stal around 18:00 in the afternoon. Jens, the owner, came to meet us personally, turned on the lights, and made sure we were comfortable and safe. The house is well equipped, and the homely atmosphere with beautiful antique furniture made us feel right at home. Jens also referred us to a local restaurant, which was within walking distance of Die Stal, and where we could enjoy friendly service, excellent food in a beautiful garden under the Free State starry sky. Truly a peaceful and wonderful stay experience at Die Stal!
While this was good value for money, we booked the accommodation because Die Stal seemed charming in character, and appeared to be in a very attractive setting. When we got there we were offered alternative accommodation adjacent to Die Stal, with the proprietor claiming that it was 'all the same' anyway. The reason given was that the geyser in Die Stal was faulty.
