Drakensberg Mountain Retreat is a stunning destination in the northern Drakensberg situated high on a ridge overlooking the Drakensberg and the Maluti Mountains.

The accommodation comprises a lodge with 4 upstairs- and 5 downstairs rooms that offer guests dinner, bed and breakfast.

The lodge offers a fully stocked bar, a lounge, dining room and an enclosed veranda that has panoramic views of the central and northern Drakensberg, the Amphitheatre and Royal Natal National Park.

It is a perfect base from which individuals, families or groups can experience the grandeur of the mighty Northern Drakensberg with a choice of either fully-catered or self-catering accommodation.

"Perfect for large groups."

What a nice house to stay in! Ideal for large group of people! Will definitely go again! Photos can definitely be updated, because the accommodation is much better than the photos show! The house has everything you will ever need.

"Romantic getaway for wedding anniversary."

The management made an extra effort to decorate our room romantically for our wedding anniversary. Friendly service and delicious food. Beautiful view with wild horses coming around. We did one of the walking trails and saw the bushman drawings. However, half of the farm has been sold so unfortunately not all the hiking trails are available anymore. Will definitely visit again.

"Beautiful surroundings. Excellent service and food."

It was a lovely break with the family. Ideal if you just want to rest and get away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Breathtaking views of the mountains. Although it was very cold and we could see snow on the mountains, it was wonderfully warm in the lodge with big fireplaces. The food was excellent. Very friendly and helpful manager and staff. Good Wi-Fi and rooms are well equipped. The only less good experience was that the 11km dirt road was very muddy due to the lot of rain and it was difficult to drive a BMW X1 there. Despite the road, we would definitely recommend Drakensberg Mountain Retreat.

"Pleasant."

It is a very pleasant place. They could just pay a little more attention to the indoor playground area and replace the toys a little. Furthermore, the food and atmosphere are very nice and peaceful.

"Breathtaking views, friendly staff."

Was there 5 years ago - and I feel the place needs some attention. Other guests also complained about it. Broken tablecloths, bed linen and curtains. A little more attention could be paid to the aesthetic. Appears old and worn. Before, the atmosphere was much more homely than at present. Staff do everything to keep you happy and you are served friendly.

It was a beautiful view. Road not as bad as we expected. Meals were delicious! Zizi made sure we were very comfortable every day. Walking path was well marked. Room is spacious, clean and comfortable. Will definitely go again.

Drakensberg Mountain Retreat is such a peaceful and beautiful resort. The staff was friendly and inviting. The food was excellent the milktart was the best I have ever tasted. We were allowed to bring our dog which made our stay so much more special. Beautiful hiking trails and no need to walk far to experience the beauty. Thank you Drankensberg Mount Retreat for a lovely stay!

"Accommodation was reasonable."

Wet pad was an absolute nightmare, snooker table didn't have a single stick with a point. We had to buy our own darts as their darts didn't have feathers and the dart board was done. The place is neat and the people are very friendly and the food very tasty.

Fabulous scenic location - probably among the very best in the Drakensberg - spoiled only by the relatively poor gravel road for the last 12km to the Retreat (but really well worth it on arrival!). The hosts are superb, the staff are all well trained, efficient, friendly and helpful. The room (No. 5) was a dream, with a matchless panoramic view from the veranda. The food, service and accommodation are all world class. Make no mistake, we'll be back!

The Retreat is hidden down a long gravel road, but worth the travel. The host Jerry was very accommodating and all the staff were friendly, even Cato the terrier. The food was so delicious. It rained the second and third day, but that was perfect for us as we needed the down time. We sat by one of the many fireplaces (even the smokers nook had a fire), and watched Netflix series on our laptop. Very sorry to go.

What a gem between somewhere and nowhere. The staff were hospitable, the rooms warm and the food real heart food. We always appreciate the history of any place and talking to Anthony about the environment, the wild horses and others was interesting. The drive out to the "Barefoot woman" and "Retief se Klip" was emotional if you still have a Voortrekker living in your heart. Would not recommend driving there in a low vehicle.

"Attentive staff, good value for money."

Beautiful view of the mountains. Service was faultless. The only challenge is the 12 km dirt road.

"Felt very welcome. Rooms are neat and surroundings very nice."

Only problem: The establishment is stated as 4.7 km from Drakensville, but it is actually 32 km of which 12 km is very bad dirt road. Can't drive more than 10 km per hour in a normal vehicle, especially when it's raining.

The place is unbelievably pretty. It was so nice to stay there and the staff very friendly and hospitable. It's like sleeping in your own place. Will go there again.

The view is out of this world and there is a lot of hiking trails. The food is real homemade food. It is ideal for people who likes hiking. Zizi delivered great client service. The premises is a little dirty and full of dust. The family of the owner took over the area with the pool table and you couldn't really use it. Lunch is restricted and there isn't a shop close by. For the same price you could stay somewhere else with 3 meals a day plus activities.

We were 4 adults travelling, whilst the establishment was very clean and 'old world' the furniture was a little tired and could do with some replacement. The meals were very good, however, the portions were really far too big and quite wasteful.

We went to Drakensberg Mountain Retreat for 2 nights in December 2016 and enjoyed our stay. The place is really a retreat with horses roaming the gardens and beautiful views of the Drakensberg. There are good hiking trails for those wanting to get active. The reception we received was extra friendly, we had some friends coming over from Johannesburg for the one night, they booked elsewhere but were allowed to spend the day with us, hiking, sharing the communal facilities etc. and we arranged for them to have dinner with us with no hassle from the staff. Nice, relaxed place to spend time with loved ones.

We had a fantastic time. The view if the mountains was the best part. The rooms were spacious, clean and fully equipped. The candle-lit dinners were a treat. The staff is friendly and the hosts are fantastic. Highly recommended.

The contrast when you drive along the dirt road and see almost nothing and then reach your final destination is worth it. Lovely comfortable large rooms. The tempting log fires are of course a bonus on cold winter evenings. Dinner by candlelight was delicious. The evening's stay was a nice treat at the end of a long weekend getaway.

One of the most beautiful and nicest places we have ever stayed! The staff went out of their way to help us, giving us free sparkling wine and a beautiful bunch of roses with our dinner. The views are incredibly beautiful and the room and bathroom are fantastically equipped. We will return there with great devotion.

It was relaxing and convenient for our whole family. Really a homely atmosphere and a breathtaking view of the entire Drakensberg. The breakfast and dinner were really nice. Will definitely stay there again.

Worth the effort to brave the dirt road! Although it's a long way away, it's driveable and definitely worth the time as a stopover!

Enjoyed the undiluted atmosphere of the Drakensberg Mountains in well-located hotel where you hear the natural music of the birds and the rattling sound of the leaves of the trees that decorate the area. A must for a person who needs tranquility and time to reflect on his/her life.

Would love to go back to hike the trails. All negative comments I have is that the road is a bit bad and small cars will struggle to get there...

The hostess, Tracy, was very friendly and made us felt at home, though we were far from our home. The food was prepared well and was delicious. We can recommend the Retreat for everyone who want to break away for a couple of days.

"Awesome"

Its one of the best place to visit and has wonderful scenery surrounding it. The food is good and the location is just awesome. Only drawback is the road which is worst (the stretch of 15 kms of dirt road from the relief pass was just terrible) but definitely value for money.

Barn House offers exclusive use accommodation for group bookings. There are 5 en-suite bedrooms downstairs and 3 dormitory-type rooms upstairs that share 2 ablutions with showers, toilets and basins. The Barn House is generously proportioned with a wood-burning stove in the open-plan kitchen and a dining room with fireplaces in the lounge.
