Breathtaking view from unit no 5 where we visited. Walking route is not too difficult, but well worth it for the views. The 4x4 route leaves you gasping for breath. Take everything with you, because shops are far from you if you need something quickly.
Excellent location with breathtaking views. The layout of the houses is very well done and everywhere there is a view of the valley and mountains. There is also an effective fireplace that keeps the cold outside. For us as nature lovers, this is an excellent destination. Will definitely visit again.

Lovely cottage, beautiful views. Would have liked a more comfortable couch and a hand rail at steps at no 4.
Enjoyable stay. Would propose that a map of the area is provided to visitors, noting points of interest, together with a map of the various walking/hiking trails and the cycling and running trails. Hiking/walking trails are clearly marked in the garden outside the unit, but there is no indication of how long the trail is, nor the level of difficulty. Hence, a map of these trails, together with the relevant information, would be very useful.
Very nice! The deck definitely needs attention. Everything else worked perfectly. Thank you very much, we will definitely come again. We particularly enjoyed the view through the many windows and the walk everywhere in the area.

There was no light in the kitchen, microwave did not work. Grill was dirty and rusted, the overflow from the sink ran directly into the cupboard. No photo that warned one of high and dangerous stairs from parking to house, struggle to carry luggage down. I sent a message to Elma and am still waiting for a response.
The view is fantastic. Fireplace works very well. More information about the walking routes would be an asset.

Since our arrival at Dumbe 3 it has been a breathtaking experience. The view is indescribably beautiful and the silence was just what the soul needed to recharge. The walking routes cater for all fitness groups. The weather worked out very nicely and on our penultimate day we were wonderfully cooped up with a blazing fire in the fireplace. Very nice for a single couple to just find each other again. The kitchen was also well appointed. Would definitely recommend it.

I would highly recommend Dumbe, everything was tidy, well equipped and worth spending time there. However, the whole experience was marred when I noticed the security camera in the bedroom. This is a serious violation of our privacy and I would like an explanation from the owner on the matter.

Cottage is well furnished. Beautiful views you can look at for days. The unpredictability of the weather keeps it interesting and gives opportunity to be active, but also to relax with a book without feeling guilty. Walking route options would help a lot.

If you want to get away and rest, the place is just what you are looking for. Be sure to pack clothes for every season of the year.
Perfect for a peaceful getaway and the place has everything you will need. We had a very nice stay.
The 180 degree view from the cottage (no. 5) is practically unparalleled. One can just sit on the wooden deck all day and watch the landscape change in all directions from up to 50 km away. The cottage is luxurious, with a lovely bed, electricity and gas that work properly, and good cell phone reception (to connect with the outside world if needed). It is unique in many ways. It is also at the end of the road (which should preferably be tackled with a rugged vehicle) and so a guest has the entire landscape to themselves.

The toilet seat is broken and there were muddy footprints all over the house that we had to mop with a mop hanging on the veranda. The diaphanous single-ply toilet paper was too cheap. But the setting and the view were out of this world!

We stayed at Dumbe 1 and it was superb! Absolutely gorgeous views from every angle and very private. You can see a little of Dumbe 2 from the lounge and bedroom windows but otherwise feels like you are out in the wilderness. Amazing! We went on loads of beautiful hikes across the plateau and down into the valley, past cows, buck and loads of birds. Dumbe 1 is the only one without the spa bath but we didn't mind as the shower is lovely with cobbled stone detail. It got misty on one of our days so we got a chance to light up the fire and have a lovely cosy day. We would strongly recommend this place to anyone in need for a proper break from busy city life! We loved it!

The house (number 4) is very well furnished, clean and on a beautiful place. It is very private and we enjoyed it a lot, although it rained the whole weekend. Will definitely visit again.
The road in is not meant for small car. But it was nothing less than the break my wife and I needed.

A return visit to Dumbe Cottages because we love the seclusion, peace and absolute silence. The Retief Pass and other 4x4 tracks were an adventure, especially as most of it was seriously overgrown compared to the previous visit. Saw a huge puffadder just in time! There were vehicles and searchlights briefly flashing at night which made us uneasy, although it was not close to us. The motion detector spotlight on the veranda provided excellent peace of mind. Will definitely visit again!

The place is really the most beautiful view I have ever seen. Because it is located on the mountain, we could not braai on the stoepie at all - but with the wind blowing it was wonderfully cool in the place while the surroundings were exceptionally hot.

We were in Dumbe no 4. It was lovely. The tranquillity enfolds you the moment you get out of the car. It's so beautiful and very private. The wind was a bit rough, could not enjoy the balcony from 14h00. But the sunrise early in the morning makes everything worthwhile. We will definitely go back again.

We saw these cottages many years ago when we visited the Kaalvoetvrou monument and promised ourselves that one day we will stay over. That day finally arrived, and it was well worth it in all aspects. It is quiet - really quiet - peaceful, with stunning views of the valley and the Berg to the west. Raptors and swifts fly past at eye-level and the thrush feeds its chicks beneath the eaves of the verandah. The cottage is well-equipped and very roomy. The bathroom (in my opinion always the crucial indicator) was clean with lots of space, and a pleasure to use. We spent hours sitting outside staring in the distance - what better way to relax! No TV, what a pleasure. Definitely a return destination.

It's simply fantastic.
We were there for 2 days and it mostly rained. It would usually be a huge disappointment, but the place is too beautiful to leave. The room is spacious and luxurious, and for those who want to test 4x4 a bit, it is perfect. We drove around the Normandin pass to turn there which I can also recommend. Note, good ground clearance is a requirement.
We had a wonderful time. Dumbe Cottages was easy to find with the directions and it is located in an incredibly peaceful and private valley. The view was breathtaking and the Cottage was equipped with everything one needs. It is the perfect getaway for couples. We will definitely go again.
From the booking until we got there and back again, was just smooth sailing. Just take enough warm clothes with you. It's always cold or cool up there. And take decent wood with you to burn in the fireplace. Their wood burns out very quickly even though there is a lot. Would I go again? For sure! And preferably not with a sedan car.

Was unforgettable and No 4 was to one side and very nice and private and the parking is a challenge. Cleaners just don't understand you very well because on the 1st day we told them we would clean ourselves because it's our nature to do that but were surprised early every morning with them in front of the door while you want to lie down and admire the view and be peaceful. Also, there was an amazing 60/70km wind the whole 5 days there which made sitting outside uncomfortable, but the fireplace was an absolute winner. Thank you very much for the cleanliness and comfort. Will definitely visit again soon.

Self-catering units very well furnished. All the necessary linen and kitchen equipment are available and included, which makes visiting easier. The accommodation is extremely neat, clean and safe. Unit is fully equipped. Nature is indescribably beautiful and is highly recommended if you need rest for your soul and mind. Take magazines or "board games" with you, because apart from the walking routes and attractions, you will soon get bored if you stay longer than 2 nights. We enjoyed it incredibly and went back home well rested. Would definitely go again - would love to go back in summer months as I can't even imagine what the scenery must be like then.

A beautiful stretch of dirt road leads you deeper into the mountain until you stop alone on a mountainside and there is only a cottage and open valley in front of you. Nobody and nothing else is in sight and you can completely relax there. The cottage is very well appointed and in my wife's words "I found my dream home". The view all around is picturesque and the fireplace creates a romantic atmosphere with only the oil lamps. A corner bath with water jets is the perfect finishing touch to the day. Feel free to go and know you will return a better person.

The well located sandstone houses each have a wonderful view of the blue Drakensberg in the distance. A variety of wildflowers and black cattle that grazes around the Retief pass ensured hours of entertainment. The house is well equipped and the staff are friendly. Three days' rest here feels like three weeks! Dumbe Cottages is number 1 on my getaway list.

It was extraordinary! Only suggestion is a proper braai, not on the deck but somewhere where you can make a nice fire. Other than that, it was beautiful, clean and neat, and the cleaning ladies was lovely. We had a nice walk and saw the most beautiful wild flowers and took a lot of photos. Also, thanks to Zenobia and LekkeSlaap for excellent correspondence. The LekkeSlaap-team is the best.

On arrival we were greeted with the view of the valley, the cottage was neat and adorable. Unfortunately, the wind blew us away in the afternoon and for the sake of safety we launched our barbecue plans. We lit the fireplace and listened to the wail of the wind in the light of the crackling fire. It's a welcoming bliss that city jays will welcome. The new day was still hidden under the mountain's fog blanket when we enjoyed the first cup of comfort, along with the ghostly figures of livestock and game. We went to Clarens early in the day and in the afternoon on our return the wind played its chorus. In the middle of the weather, in front of the fireplace, we read the provided history booklet to each other. Overall, the environment, the history, the silence, and the view are truly one of those gems that you have to experience to be able to appreciate. No review or photo will do the mountain hamlet justice.

Lovely getaway weekend. It was cold and stormy with a rainstorm and gusts of wind, but we had a lovely, warm and cosy fireplace inside. The view was something special and we were so lucky to have an hour of so of it before the mist descended again.

Perfect for those who want to get away from the hectic city life.
This unit is serviced every day and the fireplace is readied for the evening. Every unit is totally private. The view of the valley is indescribably beautiful. One simply can't get enough of it. I also like the history of the estate itself. I enjoyed the 4x4-route. Just know that the GPS wants to take you to the back if you're driving from Bergville and that this route should be avoided. If you like silence and isolation, stay here.
Our accommodation was unbelievable and the tranquillity with the view was beautiful. What made it more special was the history of the area and Piet Retief. The only thing that I would've liked different is the shower in chalet 1 and not a corner bath like chalet 2, 3 and 4. But is was good value for money.
We stayed in cottage 1 (of the 5). It was the highest situated house. The nature around you is stunning and on the terrace you are right in the middle of it. The cleaning service came every day to tidy up and clean everything thoroughly. The dirt road to the Dumbe cottages is 14 kilometers long and the best way to find it is to follow the signs to the Barefoot Woman monument. We drove about half an hour each time, so expect a loss of time. On the other side, the road is a beautiful route through the mountains, on which you can marvel every time at the landscape, goats, ostriches and we even saw a secretary bird. Despite the time-consuming road, the Dumbe cottages are strategically located between the northern Drakensberg on one side and Golden Gate National Park and Clarens on the other. Missing wifi did feel like a miss.
You realize how mighty the creator is in a place like this, wonderful natural beauty, silence is wonderful, a place where you can find peace, will definitely visit Dumbe again.

Beautiful country side with breathtaking views. The cottage is very comfortable and is kept clean. If you need to get away from the rushed city life, this is the place to go. I would have liked to be met by someone on arrival and given a map and a list of possible activities that could be done. Although very private, the cleaners did walk in on us during a morning bath which was a little embarrassing. I liked the open plan bath, but a more private toilet would be nice.

I stayed there on a previous occasion and it was lovely. I chose Dumbe for the celebration of our 35th wedding anniversary because the Jacuzzi/bath, with the beautiful view. When booking it was conveyed that Dumbe himself decides where you stay, I accepted this, because in the photos on the website every unit has a Jacuzzi/bath. Upon our arrival, we were very disappointed, we got a unit without a Jacuzzi/tub. I feel they are deceiving one on purpose or they will struggle to rent out that unit. I will warn everyone against the deception. The morning at departure time the cleaners arrived at 09:20 and we have until 10:00 before departure time, very unprofessional and unpleasant.
We really enjoyed our time at Dumbe Cottage No. 1. Accommodation was neat and clean. We will definitely book the place again in future if we just need to chill out.
The tranquility and breathtaking views, fireplace, braai, jacuzzi, gas stove, privacy and even the occasional inquisitive cow herd made for an overall atmosphere that is without a doubt one of the best we've experienced in our travels. There is a great hike walking distance from the Cottage. It is the same trail used by the Bush & Berg MTB event. We even managed to spot a secretary bird prancing about below. Take with a book, a hat & binoculars! Absolutely lovely place, highly recommend it.

If heaven had to come to earth and find itself on the mountain, Dumbe is the place where it was deposited. The silence, wildlife and environment do something to a person, it changes a person and gives you new life and relaxation like nothing before. If one wants a quiet and peaceful stay, this is definitely the place to visit. Well thought out cottages which leaves one with great views down the valley and no close neighbours. Personally I would have preferred a bigger bed.
Dumbe's stay was blissful and peaceful. The silence soul-enriching and the view breathtaking which made Christmas 2016 very special. So nice to be able to get away from the city's noise and the neighbors' whining beagles who mourn their owners who are on holiday over Christmas. It was also an experience to be able to ride out the Retief Pass. For that you need a 4x4 vehicle, but stay away when the pass is wet. We would love to visit Dumbe again.
It was an incredibly peaceful weekend and the place is food for your soul.
We had a great stay. The cottage is very pretty and clean. Would have liked personal contact with the owner/host - only received a few short messages. Water of shower never gets warmer than mild. A map of restaurants and hiking trails in the area would have been welcome.
We left the 2 toddlers with grandpa and got away for 2 days. The nature and silence was wonderful. The cottage is well equipped with everything you might need. Will definitely recommend it to people looking for rest for their soul. We are going to make this an annual thing!
A lovely place with a fireplace and it's fully equipped. The view from the unit is beautiful and the lovely bath was a bonus. Take a scenic walk on the farm and visit the Barefoot Woman Statue. It's also not far from the Royal Natal Drakensburg Park if you want to clamber through the mountains. Will visit again and can highly recommend them.

Dumbe Cottages are situated approximately 280 km from Durban and approximately 300 km from Johannesburg, on the R74 route. The cottages are within walking distance from the Kaalvoet Vrou-Monument. Activities in the area include mountain biking trails, quad- biking, 4x4 routes, bird watching, and hiking.
