For a break in nature and for fly fishing I can highly recommend Gabrielshoek Country Escape and for Andre's hospitality. Will visit again.
Very nice stay, everything was neat and available. Farm owner was hospitable and helpful. Fishing was also a pleasure.
A lovely, peaceful getaway weekend. Neat, clean cottage, well equipped with everything one might need. Sufficient firewood was provided to ward off the winter chill. Friendly and helpful service from Andette and Andre. Note, however, that the shortest road includes 3km of dirt road which is definitely only suitable for a 4x4 car. However, we drove the road a few times to get into Dullstroom and it's completely doable if you take it slow!
It was a lovely weekend on the farm! Accommodation is clean and tidy. Lovely fireplace inside. Everything you need is there. Owners are very friendly, helpful, accommodating and sociable, even help make sure you catch that trout! Caught brown and rainbow trout. It was our second time there and will definitely go again. The dogs also really enjoyed it and it was so nice to take them along. We would recommend it to anyone who wants the outdoors, tranquility, beautiful scenery and good trout fishing.
Very nice and peaceful. Nice fish caught.
See stars.
Just me and my two boys had so much fun! Mom was able to rest and the boys were so happy and entertained by the kind, patient uncle who gave me a gift of rest. I don't know who enjoyed it more - me, the boys, or our three little dogs. We discovered the freedom of farm life. All I want to say is make sure you're driving the right way. Although I have a 4x4, the dirt road was rough and you have to know what you are doing. It's a road and a half, but at least we had a great adventure and stories to tell. I would strongly recommend taking the detour instead, the road is MUCH more difficult and it's not much further. But everything together was very nice!
We enjoyed it very much. Will visit there again.
Make sure you have a high clearance vehicle.
Secluded and quiet, with a nice view.
We had an incredibly nice weekend and rested wonderfully. The facilities are perfect and well equipped. The silence was so nice, no one seen in the 3 days except the excellent host, Andre and Andette. The visit was too short, will definitely go again. The weather was rainy, would suggest guests take some board games with them.
The provincial road is the last bad thing you will experience at Gabrielshoek. The indoor braai area is lovely regardless of the weather and a big plus. The unit was clean and tidy. The reception is warm.
The lovely and well-appointed chalet has the most beautiful views, surrounded by rolling hills and dams. The huge indoor fireplace is a big bonus for cooking, braaiing or just chilling in front of a warm fire on cold nights. Our hosts, Andre and Andette were just amazing, and Oom André was kind enough to offer advice and lend a helping hand with our fly fishing escapades! Highly recommended for a safe and quiet holiday or weekend break away in a tranquil setting.
Very nice hearth to chase away the cold.
Everything was neat and everything and more there to make your visit wonderful. Andre and his daughter very friendly, Andre enjoys sharing knowledge about the farm and his dog Buela is a natural love, he accompanies you on walks and keeps you safe and laughing with all his antics, he got on well with the two of us scotties. The surroundings are beautiful and the silence necessary for a tired soul. Here you can definitely reset. I definitely recommend a 4x4 vehicle, I did it with my Kia Soul but was a bit nervous. But for that view I do it again.
Gabrielshoek is beautifully located, we enjoyed the scenery and tranquility so much. It felt completely like we were staying on our own piece of farm among the mountains. The cottage was spotlessly clean and is very well furnished and there is even a fence in front of the cottage where the dogs can be properly enclosed, if necessary. Buela is a gentle giant and our two dogs enjoyed running around the field with him. We will definitely visit again.
We probably enjoyed the silence the most, and that's why we slept so well. The most beautiful view down the valley, and your eyes can occasionally focus on the beautiful mountains and ridges around was heavenly. Baboons with sunset hear bog gum, foxes heard too. The cottage's hearth is a winner. We will definitely visit Gabrielhoek again.
The road there was just the challenge my husband and my brother needed to enjoy the fun with their four wheel drive vehicles.
Had a great time and slept peacefully. Listened to the howling of foxes at night. Go for a walk up to the hill and admire the natural beauty. Will definitely visit again.
We chose Gabrielshoek for our accommodation for a wedding. We were a bit nervous about the difficult and bad roads, but the owners put us at ease and helped us out in the middle of the night when we got stuck in the mud. The place is incredibly beautiful and gave our family some time to just relax and breathe. Will visit again for sure!
The house is comfortable and clean. We took our two dogs with us and they really enjoyed it. It was in the middle of December but nice and cold and rainy. The fire in the fireplace was burning all the time and we simply grilled in the fireplace and made potjie.
Was lovely to get away from city noise. Nature is untouched. The fireplace in the cottage was a winner! Lovely walking paths on the farm. Received very hospitably and enjoyed the weekend tremendously. Would recommend a 4x4 vehicle.
We really enjoyed the silence and scenery. We also had a nice chat with the owner. The vivang was good, but a bit expensive per kg. The road to the farm is very bad and needs attention.
As a botanist, the incredibly large amount of plants in the immediate vicinity of the cottage was a loop court.
We had a nice quiet weekend. Have a nice walk and enjoy the scenery. My dogs enjoyed their holes. Would definitely recommend to anyone who wants to relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Many thanks to Andre and Andette for your hospitality, we will see you again soon.
Uncle Andre and his daughter are beautiful people and so loving. They make you feel so at home. We will definitely visit again.
Would stay there again, especially with our pets. Nice and private, great fishing and loved the fireplace.
We really enjoyed our stay. It's tranquil and quiet and very relaxing. The cottage is so well-equipped.
What a surprise! We are refreshed to soul, spirit and body. André is a wonderful host, showed us safely there, provided excess wood to brave the cold, lovely electric sheets and heater in bathroom. Thank you very much - we will come again!
Value for money where you kick off your shoes and find peace of mind.
We had a wonderful stay at Gabrielshoek. Our 2 dogs enjoyed themselves and my husband had a great time fishing. Beautiful farm to go for a walk and the view is breathtaking. The cottage was very well equipped and we were impressed with how clean and tidy it was. Really a pleasure. The fireplace is one of the nicest parts of the house and made it wonderfully cozy on a cold rainy weekend. The bit of dirt road to the farm is really only for tall vehicles, but we were warned against that. An alternative longer but safer route was also offered.
For a weekend getaway it's 10/10.
We really enjoyed going for a walk and enjoying the indoor fireplace and the tranquility.
Wonderful place to just rest!

The rates are calculated per person per night and therefore bedding will only be provided for the number of guests booked at all times. If 2 single rooms are required, please inform us when booking. This rates system is used to make the cottage more affordable for 2 to 4 guests, instead of paying the full unit rate per night.A maximum of 4 dogs per booking is allowed if arranged in advance. However, there is an additional payment of R50 per dog, if approved, and must be paid in cash on arrival.
One has to drive a provincial dirt road to get to the farm which is not in a good condition, so we recommend a vehicle with a high ground clearance and a 4x4. There is an alternative route that will make the journey 30 mins longer from Dullstroom. A 4x4 is recommended during the rainy season.
Fishing rods are available for hire. Guests will receive 2 bags of firewood on arrival for the fireplace and more wood is available at an additional cost.
Please note that the nearest shops, restaurants and other amenities are in the towns of Lydenburg and Dullstroom.
