42 guests' feedbackVery nice stay. One of the best combing places.
We really enjoyed our stay. It was great being off grid and not worried about phone signal and other social media distractions. We had a very nice walk on Friday on one of the many mountain bike trails. The unit was great and very well equipped all around. The bed was great, there are just no cupboards in the bedroom. The kitchen is well stocked and you have 2 gas burners to cook on. The bathroom is also good with a nice big fridge. The amount of stars you can see is really something else. A few things to just consider: You MUST have at least a 4x2 high riding bakkie, as the road up to the cabin is very rough. There is 0 signal at the cabin, only signal at the reception area. The hot tub is very nice, but bring lots of wood. Take mosquito and fly repellent with you, just in case.
Amazing location and experience. This little cabin is hidden away and isolated from the rest of the world, in a very literal sense. The most amazing peace one can experience and star gazing I have never seen before. Hot tub to enjoy. The cabin was clean and very comfortable and one just need to leave the troubles of the world and relax for a night or two. The road is good, but do note that it is a gravel road with lots of big rocks and the area has no signal. No load shedding, since the cabin runs from solar.
We had a lovely stay at Rhebokvlakte. The cottage is lovely and has stunning views! We enjoyed being completely off the grid and our lovely walks in the morning. We were a little surprised that there was absolutely no signal or WiFi, perhaps we missed that in the property description, but we embraced it nonetheless.
Was really great. Quiet and peaceful.
Awesome location with clean bathrooms. The only negative is the fact that the gate code wasn't sent to us. There is also no signal at the gate, so you will either have to drive back into town or jump the fence and walk to reception.
Beautiful environment to camp in. Different species of birds and the cutest mice live near the campsite. The ablutions are spartan, but have gas geysers. Be prepared to get cold when you shower and the wind blows; ablutions are only wooden panels loosely assembled. There was no hot water for washing dishes, but the gas geyser installation is available - we believe this is not always a problem. Reception was warm and friendly. Dirt road in the reserve will not be so easily passable for low-slung sedan cars. Make sure you download the gate code before you go; we stood in front of the gate and waited for someone to come out from inside to open for us - there is no catchment and 30 km of dirt road to the nearest signal. Gecko Rock is a beautiful part of the Koo Karoo - a must on your camping list!
Beautiful remote place to really get away from it all. Good for hiking, biking and chilling. Cottage was clean, spacious and well-equipped and our hosts were all lovely. Will definitely go back with friends.
Very nice. Quiet and peaceful, beautiful surroundings.
The stay at Gecko Rock Private Nature Reserve was sublime. We enjoyed the mountain views whether it was from our bed, the jacuzzi or the front deck. The hike was amazing, and we saw buck, which was really awesome. We even met the owner. He is a real people's person, friendly! Our cabin was right in the mountain, secluded and private, just the way we like it.
One of the best and friendliest experiences ever! I can't wait to go back!
It was awesome. Our Jack Russell enjoyed it so much. It was peaceful, still, the view is breathtaking. Hiking trail was so refreshing early in the morning before the sun came out. The cottage is very private too.
Detail in chalet special. Clean, warm chalet. Beautiful bedding, towels and cutlery. Really enjoyed Kol-Kol. Every room in the chalet has the most beautiful view. No load-shedding. Above all the silence and peace we experienced - 'Priceless'.
Had a lot of fun and was able to get there with my Fiat Uno. The nature was really beautiful and open as one would expect from the Karoo. The light is clean and everyone who stayed there was friendly for the most part. Michael the front desk man is one of the best front desk staff I have ever dealt with. I'll just mention that some of the people's dogs roam around unsupervised and even barked at us early in the morning next to our tent, but otherwise I have no complaints. If you are a small group and like peace and quiet then it is better to go during a quiet time, because large groups can hang out until late.
I never met the owners, but Michael (one of the attendants there) was so helpful and kind. If you are travelling by motorcycle, I might warn you that the roads from reception to the furthest cabin (where we stayed) can be a little rough and rocky. However, saying that, Michael carried our panniers and lifted my partner to and from reception. He brought us wood, lit the fire in the outdoor bath and tended to our every need. I cannot say thank you enough for making our evening superb! There is also a small shop with some supplies at reception (things like firelighters and nibbles) just in case you forgot anything. I highly recommend staying here!
Very nice, just been there too late to enjoy the facilities.
Great off the grid, but with all the key items.
Great stay, clean and remote.
We were so surprised and amazed by Southern Nights. No TV, no cell service, just nature and quality family time to look forward to for the weekend. There is WiFi available at reception should you wish to make use of your phone, but you won't miss your phone. I must say, both me and hubby are missing not hearing our phones ring or beep. For the first time, we actually relaxed. And the owners, wow, where do I start to describe the heartwarming and friendly service. Thank you so much, Sharon, for an amazing weekend. See you guys again very soon.
Be sure to get gate code before traveling to Gecko Rock. Gate was not open as described and times given. We had to drive far to get signal to be able to call to get code. (About 50 km to signal and back). There were also fighting mongooses that woke us up inside the cottage, 5AM.
The surroundings are breathtakingly beautiful with beautiful walking, cycling and 4x4 routes. The campground is a total disappointment. The pitches are so small and cramped that there is absolutely no privacy. One's chairs get mixed up with the neighbors'! There are also 3 cabins very close to the camp which obstruct the view. There is no hot water in the kitchen area and the bathrooms only have hot water now and then when the geyser decides to work. The pool which was a big draw for booking the place was dirty and I had to remove all the vermin myself before the kids could swim. The only benefit was that our dogs really enjoyed it.
This was our second visit to Gecko Rock and we will definitely go again. The units are well laid out and you have everything you need. It is close enough to the Cape that you can drive through for a weekend and far enough away that you can get some proper rest.
We had a great time at Gecko Rock. The campground is exactly what you see in the photo, although there were more people than I thought would fit. There are cottages for rent right next to the campsite, between you and the open view, this was a bit of a disappointment. The dogs in the campsite could also be a bit of a pest, it's a bit less pleasant when a dog steals your food or someone steps in a smelly land mine. I will go back to Gecko Rock but will book a private area next time. We had a lot of fun cycling and climbing and there are wonderful views.
I camped at Hecko Rock and found the full moon and the stars and both in abundance. The campsite is very good value for money and offers everything advertised. One feels slightly exposed in the ablution, seeing that one can see through the wooden slats. With a quiet campsite it was okay, but it can be a problem if it is full.
Our company booked at Gecko Rock Private Nature reserve and are very happy with the good service!
We all had an amazing time but for the travel into town to get ice was a huge issue. Making ice available on site would have made the experience so much more comfortable. We experienced a scorcher of a day and had to travel into town twice during our stay. Other than that, we had the best time! Would love to come back! The stars were amazing. We also had friends who accidentally locked their keys in the car and there were people who came to help in a flash. We were so thankful! Just amazing!
We will definitely return for the peace, quiet, solitude and views that you get at Gecko Rock Private Nature Reserve - great find!
Gecko Rock is pristine nature and a place to drink in the air, feast your eyes and revive your soul. We stayed in Rheebokvlakte Cottage, totally isolated from the rest of the farm, with a breathtaking view from your deck and bed. Very rustic but well equipped. At the time we went all the pots and pans looked brand new and were good quality. However, I found the rates a bit high compared to similar places I visited. Wonderful 4x4 route. We were 5 cars in a group led by Cederberg 4x4 and the route took us about 4 hours. Never a dull moment demanding full concentration from driver and passenger all the time. Incredibly beautiful vistas all along. Grade 4 most of the way. Think we would have struggled at places without a diff lock (luckily we had one fitted to our Jimny). Gun shots from the shooting range did bother some of our group at the De Wetshof camp site, but did not hear it at our chalet. Lovely camp site with refreshing little pool and great lapa. All in all a wonderful weekend, highly recommended.
Really felt like sleeping outdoors which was new, was expecting a bit more in terms of the camp site itself, but understand the raw, open bush experience is what gives it its serene environment along with a touch of adventure.
Initially, it was a "bomb shock" to walk into the one-room space with the bare bed, bedside tables and fridge as stand-alone items. No place to put your bags down or unpack something. Same with the bathroom. Soon the absolute peace and quiet made you forget about the primitiveness and delighted you in the silence and beautiful green Karoo landscape and mountains.
We really enjoyed our time. It was absolutely beautiful. It's a place if you're looking for calm and tranquility.
If you are looking for quiet alone time, you will struggle to find a better spot. We had a whole valley to ourselves. The cottage had all we needed and was comfortable. We will definitely be back to spend longer, running, hiking and mountain biking. Great spot!
An incredibly nice break from the daily city life!
It was a wonderful experience, the most beautiful place! Nice barbecue, walk and just relax. Friendly hospitality and would definitely recommend the place to anyone!
Excellent location, beautiful and neat units. Excellent lighting despite difficult location - good engineering. However, one criticism was that the guest was exhausted at the Solitude and Tranquility showers (despite the fact that according to the information book it was mentioned that everything is checked beforehand). Maybe the campers used the showers? So we couldn't shower and it was damn cold! But for us it's more about the location and the silence than the comfort and that's exactly what needs to be preserved. I spoke to Jarred and heard you are considering expansions which is positive news, as long as the quiet and solitude is preserved in some places. Perhaps two of the single beds can be replaced with a double bed or alternatively the sleeper coach can be fixed for the function as a double bed.
See stars.
Gecko Rock epitomises the future of Karoo ecotourism. If you're into hotel holidays, look elsewhere. Off the grid and eco-friendly, quiet and with vast expanses of pristine Karoo to revive the soul. There are beautiful routes (with lots of climbs through typical Karoo "koppies") on the farm to cycle, walk and do with a 4x4. Too much for one weekend - that's why we'll definitely be back. Cape Nature has set the trend with their eco-friendly accommodation, and Gecko Rock is clearly ahead of other private reserves in that respect. There's also promise of more single track mountain biking routes to come which is exciting. You can feel the city stress subsiding as you pass through the gates. Wonderful!
It was lovely to get away from the crazy daily rushed life with my wife, to recharge and regain perspective on life.
We quickly broke away here in December 2017. Rheebokskloof Cottage is nice on its own and the silence is what we needed. Stars were beautiful there.
Anyone who loves nature will love this. These are quiet capitalized. Beautiful place and the friendliest people.
The owners were very friendly and helpful in order to make our accommodation as pleasant as possible. The cabin in nature was exactly what we wanted for a break from the city. Lovely hiking trails to explore and just relax in nature.
