Karen and Frans' farm is beautiful and they also shared their beautiful place with us! The lodge has everything and more! We ate the most delicious Karoo lamb chops! We would recommend the place to anyone who needs to travel between the Cape and Gauteng.

We really enjoyed our stay at Grootforntein, it is a great place for an overnight stay along the N1. Situated about 3km from the N1, no traffic noise. Very safe, very friendly hosts, facilities offering all you need in terms of self-catering for dinner. Rooms are immaculate and comfortable.

My partner and I had a wonderful one-night stay en route from Cape Town to the eastern Free State. We sneaked in some birding in the evening when we arrived and early the next morning. The dam was a brilliant spot with over 200 blue cranes coming to roost in the evening, great views of two groups of blue korhaans, a pair of booted eagles, and even a vagrant yellow-billed stork.

What a beautiful, exquisite, tasteful place! You just feel at home. After a long day of driving we were able to relax with a beautiful sunset over the most beautiful dam in the Karoo! Afterwards, Karen treated us to a delicious lamb pie and vegetables. Absolutely delicious!
What a special place! Next time we'll stay another night to fully experience the beautiful setting of Grootfontein Guestfarm. It felt like we were walking around in a magazine photoshoot! All the rooms are exquisitely decorated with plush cushions, soft knitted blankets and beautiful furniture pieces. The fully kitted kitchens with cosy "stoeps" are ideal for relaxing outside, while braaing delicious Karoo lamb chops. The kids enjoyed a dip in the big pool, thanks to the handy swimming towels rolled in a basket next to the pool. We loved the scenic walk past the labyrinth, the round farm dam, through the trees and the view looking over the big dam, enjoying the sunset while stretching our legs. Karen, you created a real gem! Be sure to visit the gorgeous Padstal next to the farm for a variety of delicious treats and gifts!

We slept very well here. The cottage was perfect and had everything we needed. Karen and her husband were 5 star! They even took our children on a little tour, to see the hanslammers! I can really recommend it and have also told all our friends and family about it.

Just what we needed.
What struck me first was the attention that Karen and Frans pay to the small details. From the dining room, bathrooms and bedrooms. Incredibly neat.
The accommodation is conveniently close to the N1, yet in such a way that no noise from vehicles and trucks is audible or visible. The owners received us personally upon our arrival and were very hospitable. The accommodation is clean and tidy with all the necessary facilities, also delicious biscuits. We could have a nice walk around the field to stretch our legs and take pictures. It is the ideal stopover for those traveling between Gauteng and Cape Town. Thank you!

This is nothing like a traditional farmhouse. The interior decor is absolutely stunning and the units are spacious, modern and absolutely comfortable. They units are fully supplied with solar power, so no need to worry about loadshedding. Absolutely friendly owners who came out to personally welcome us in the pouring rain, and made sure we were all set before she left. Two things to consider, but absolutely minor. Wi-Fi signal is weak. It is just 3 km off off the N1, but dirt road all the way.

Grootfontein is like an oasis in the middle of the Karoo. Karen is a great host and always helpful. The rooms were clean and very comfortable. Separate kitchen and braai area is great and the fridge stocked with soft drinks, beers and ciders is a nice touch (at an extra cost, of course) especially since the farm is about 30 km from Richmond town. Nothing beats a Karoo night sky with stars aplenty, and there's even a little forest on the property. Not to mention a large swimming pool and grassed areas in abundance. All in all, we had a great stay.

The perfect halfway drop for our young family, Karen took care of us with a lovely braai pack and authentic but very glamorous accommodation. Close enough to the N1 to be convenient but far enough to feel isolated. An oasis in an otherwise dry landscape, the pool was a welcome sight and the newly renovated double shower was the best we’ve had in years. So clean, neat and well appointed. Will definitely be returning!
Our room had such a lovely farm feel to it. Our dinner was delicious and we had a great rest before continuing our journey the next day.

Unfortunately the host misread the situation regarding smoking in the room. We certainly would and did not do that but despite this misunderstanding, we would highly recommend the guesthouse. The WiFi needs attention as was patchy at best. Even though the owner offers meals she was not there and recommended the "padstal" up the road for ready-made meals and was an excellent choice.
