Lovely little cottages on a spacious farm. We enjoyed the time out from the hustle and bustle, beautiful mountain views, and openness of the farm. The host was very attentive and helpful.
The hostess provided all the necessary information before arrival. The guest book had information galore, including nearby restaurants, activities, and a host of other useful information. The cottage was well-equipped, and a plus was water bowls provided for the pups. We had a wonderful walk to the dam, and my spaniel spent a lot of time swimming. We fed the 2 potbelly pigs and played with the donkey. The garden was a kaleidoscope of colours and well-maintained. If you're looking for a quiet place with your pups, then Hermitage Huisies is the place to be. It's peaceful and yet close enough to head to town for some great food and music.

Cottages are very neatly built and maintained. Beautiful farm setting and absolutely pet friendly. Excellent accessories in the cottages and a nice braai area on the stoep overlooking the mountains. Donkeys, sheep and horses roam around in enclosures. An excellent hostess to attend to needs. Would highly recommend the place.

Wake up in quiet surroundings, enjoy your freshly ground coffee while chatting to the horses. Pet the friendly dogs during the day and sleep in peace at night. Bugs were surprisingly few. Almost no mosquitos to mention - we mostly kept the lights off. The great little porch with braai and the swimming pool is kept neat and tidy. Water runs great in the lovely, large walk-in shower - everything just works well. We stayed in guinea fowl and loved it. Attention to detail, including a personal welcome message! The room was ready and well prepared upon our arrival. On a cold evening, the fireplace is a welcome addition that soon dissipated the chill. Neatly prepared and in accordance with the photos and description. Not equipped for beurtktag - the emergency light only lasts 30 minutes and there is only one. Overnight guests should rather bring extra battery lights themselves. There is no boiler for the gas stove and the geyser could only provide one shower of hot water. If this can be digested, staying during load shedding can be pleasant.
The only problem I encountered was the fact that we couldn't invite friends (who were in the guest house in town) to come barbecue with us. I specifically chose self-catering because we would like to entertain friends. I only saw after my payment that you are not allowed to invite someone for coffee. I booked 2 cottages there, so I could see my daughter and future son-in-law the Thursday night before the wedding.
You can hear your neighbors talking through the walls, which is not ideal. Our hot tub was on the front porch, and our neighbors had 3 day visitors so couldn't fully enjoy it as they barbequed and socialized late into the night. The unit is neat, but dirty. Found lots of spider nests inside, lampshades look like they haven't been cleaned in a long time and it's dusty inside. Some of the cutlery had old pieces of food on it so overall cleanliness was not too good. The shower does not drain and immediately pools. According to the advertisement, I understood that there was a hiking trail on the farm, but had to use a public road as 'hiking trail'. Overall it was nice but expected better from the ad description.
Feel free to go there - nice walking/jogging/biking routes from there.

Ideal overnight stop for us from East to West. Aardvark is fully equipped with everything and more. Good coffee, comfortable bed, hot water, LED light for load shedding and nice glasses for a drink. The attention to finer detail is exceptional - roses next to the bed and name on the door.

The accommodation is neat, clean and well fitted out - we even had loads of board games to choose from. We had a great time and enjoyed the occasional visit from the two friendly labradors - Daisy and Petunia. My son enjoyed the pool and the hot tub was a real winner! Feeding the horses was also fun!
Our stay at in the River Cottage was absolutely lovely. The children enjoyed being so close to the animals and everything was in walking distance, such as the pool and park. The hostess provided all the needed information as well as Daisy, the canine hostess, who even escorted us on our walk to the berry picking farm next door. We stayed here at Hermitage Huisies for the weekend for a wedding at Joubertsdal. It is clear that the River Cottage is actually, as Nadia explained, more suitable for a couple with children (on the sofa bed in the living area), but the sofa bed is just as comfortable as the bed and provided a great night's rest. All the necessary self-catering facilities are there, the view is beautiful and we walked from the cottage to the Swellendam dam on the first morning. The sink makes gurgling noises when the toilet is flushed and the shower doesn't drain very quickly, but it wasn't a problem at all - just something to watch out for. The WiFi also didn't want to connect, probably because of the terrible load shedding, but we didn't miss it terribly. If we had stayed longer and the weather allowed it, we would definitely have used the fireplace and the braai outside. Just a nice, cuddly, well-equipped unit in a nice setting. Recommended!

The "hot-pot" was the icing on the cake for us. We had a nice view of the pond and although the weekend was very cold, he made it feel like summer very quickly! The house is very nice and clean and has everything one would need. The owners were also very friendly and make you feel very trustworthy with their "honesty jar". I would definitely like to spend a weekend at the Hermitage Huisies again!

We stayed in Aardvark's burrow and it was a lovely unit with comfortable and attractive furnishings and a small but well-equipped kitchen nook (induction hotplate, microwave, toaster, kettle and plenty of cooking utensils and crockery. ) There is a private patio undercover with a great built-in braai. The units are on a large property with a communal swimming pool and lapa area with a stunning mountain view. Hermitage Huisies is located on a quiet but well-maintained gravel road very near Marloth Nature Reserve with plenty of options for hikes, trail runs or mountain biking. Swellendam is a quaint and historic town and we attended a local market on Saturday morning for some great coffee and breakfast options. Overall, a super weekend breakaway. We would definitely stay again.

I personally think that the Hermitage Cottages are overrated especially considering that you have to pay R1050 per night for them. The pictures of the inside of the house are still exactly the same, but the outside is definitely not. This tells me that the equipment is probably easily between 7 and 10 years old. It was extremely hot, but the fans were working, but for some reason no wind was coming through. The garden was untidy and this contributed to our first impressions of the place. Little things like blunt scissors, diluted dish soap and hand soap in the bathroom are always a negative point.

Best bed you can sleep in. Wine, gin and braai wood all that you can buy extra to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Location of the farm is incredibly beautiful. Pool or Hotpot (Jacuzzi).
We loved the peace and quiet and incredible mountain views from Rose Cottage. The hot tub is worth budgeting for (you rent it separately and get exclusive use). We slept really well thanks to the silence and darkness. The little cottage is absolutely charming - clean and tidy with everything you need for a country break - plus some delightful extras. We so appreciated the profiling of the excellent local wines and jams.
I've always wanted a horse or 2 on my "front porch"! Our little girl enjoyed the freedom, riding a bike, talking to the horses and rubbing them. She also made friends with the 2 friendly dogs on the farm. Light a fire and sit on the porch with your coffee in hand and eyes on the breathtaking mountain ranges. Breathe, shake off the hustle and bustle of life and just be! Old or young, this is soul food.

If you want tranquility and simplicity but quality this is the place. Wow. My sister and I stayed in the Aardvark Cottage. Every element was thought about. The beds are made for heavenly sleeps. Peace and quiet all around and lovely walks. We loved every minute.

We had such a wonderful stay in the Rose house, right next to the pond, with the most beautiful view of the farm and mountains. Everything in the house is wonderfully equipped, it was very cold but the fireplace, small heaters and delicious bedding kept us warm. The surrounding area is so beautiful, we had a nice bike ride and came to the most beautiful dam. The Marloth Nature Reserve is also around the corner and the village is close should you need something at the shop. Will definitely visit again!

We really enjoyed our break in the River Cottage! The house is furnished with everything you need and spotlessly clean. Checking in and out was easy and the service we received was always very friendly and hospitable. There are many places in the area to explore if you feel like it, but it's just as nice to stay quietly on the farm and enjoy the scenery. We hit cold weather and spent the evening cozying up in front of the fireplace and playing games.
I was in Swellendam for work/business for the day. It was a long, exhausting day, but it was wonderful to be able to check into the cottage in the peaceful and beautiful surroundings. It was great to sit on the porch, enjoy a glass of wine, watch the sunset and just relax. Almost like a day's vacation captured in one evening. The cottage was very well equipped. There was everything (and more) I needed to prepare a quick meal. Everything is very well maintained, very clean with very comfortable sleeping place. It was almost a shame to have to hit the road back home so early the next morning to tackle the rest of the work week. I would love to go back for a nice relaxing weekend!

The cottages are perfectly located for a good break from the city rush. The house is well equipped and has everything you need.
Hermitage Cottages are in a very idyllic getaway destination. Located near the beautiful mountains, with horses, wide open spaces, one can really escape the narrowness of the city. The constellation at night is also breathtaking.
There is only made provision for 2 adults and 2 children and not 4 adults. There is only seating for 2 people in the lounge and 2 on the veranda. 2 mattresses on the single bed are hard and very thin. The grass and garden on the premises were untidy and overgrown. The sponge at the basin was dirty and overused. Houses are closes to the highway - no safety for motors. No path to the swimming pool - it's between the overgrown grass.

Nice place, clean and tidy, beautiful view of the mountain, horses quietly grazing, guinea fowl crying in the distance. True farm atmosphere without being on a farm, but still outside of town. It started to rain the evening we stayed over and the waterfalls that formed in the mountains were of course a big bonus for me. One could see them sparkle through the mist.

Stayed in Rose Cottage which was spacious enough for all of us to have a good time together. Good location from which to participate in the Swellendam Park Run, you can almost walk there. Very close to the town and next to the berry farm, so we were able to buy food speedily without it feeling like a mission. Yet the location is such that you still feel far enough away from town.

Wow, what a great place. We spent the night at River Cottage. It was wonderful to look at the horses and guinea-fowls in the area behind the house. We had a visit form a big frog in the early evening, but he didn't want to stay. The place is very neat and the facilities are excellent. The bed is very nice! The cottages are very neat and so much effort has been made, small things like roses that were next to the bed, biscuits in a small container that were filled every now and then and a braai was specially arranged for us so that we could sit at the front of the cottage could braai, my parents can't see well in the dark. I would definitely recommend these cottages. The Zaaymans are incredibly warm people. Thank you very much.

Peaceful environment, horses in the surrounding camps were very special. Just a 5 minute drive from Swellendam. Filter coffee, rusks and wood were a pleasant surprise. Best value.
Here we experienced life on a farm with beautiful views of the mountain, the animals, etc. The braai on the open veranda will work very well during summer, but it might be a good idea to have shaded netting to roll down during winter to make it less exposed. Some braai tongs would also be nice. The bed and mattress, the duvet and the pillows all allowed for a good night's rest. The bathroom was very spacious with a big shower. In winter the couch and coffee table might work better inside rather than outside. The unit was very clean and neat. We really noticed that and Lucia said more than once: "I want to stay here again." The photo collection showing the history of the farm, especially the old black and white photos on the wall are very popular among tourists these days. A map of the surrounding area with walking trails, attractions and other activities would also be very popular. But one can see you went to a lot of trouble with the book.
