84 guests' feedbackVery peaceful and serene place. Excellent location for nature and close to lots of activities. Must compliment the friendly and welcoming attitudes that made the experience one of a kind.
Beautiful place to visit with family and friends.
Think the interior needs a bit of an update. There is so much potential, was in honeymoon suite. Update needed. Service was great and everything was clean and quiet.
The place is very peaceful and not too far for a quick getaway. However, renovation work is needed. For a weekend or a long weekend it is ideal, but for a longer stay there is not much to do.
The maintenance of the rooms is not on focus. Out of all the braaiers, there is only one that is not full of holes. The cabinets fall apart when you open them and the sad part is the place has so much potential. Cobie needs to pay attention.
TV didn't work. Wifi didn't work. No network capture there. Breakfast was tasteless. The place had no but no comfort. Place outside short cleaning. Swimming pools were grass green. No, I would never recommend them. Not worth the money we paid.
On arrival we were received unfriendly and it felt like the lady was almost running to get the card machine that we have to pay the outstanding difference. On arrival at the cottage some of the bedding was dirty, the grill was rusted up, the floors were dirty and when I opened the freezer part of the fridge it fell apart (dirty inside and could see it looked like that for quite some time). The toilets had puddles of water around them and water from the top one dripped through the plank floor into the lower room. In the evening the kitchen cupboards were full of cockroaches. We just stayed there that night as we didn't want to drive in the evening, but the next morning we packed our things and instead lost money and went home. The photos on the website were taken years ago. It was the most horrible stay and it's as if the owner knows about all the mistakes and just puts people's funds in his pocket and looks over everything.
Very nice place to visit with family and friends. Neat and a nice view.
Bathrooms far from campsite, bathrooms not up to standard at all, showers only curtains, not private at all, unsafe for women to go to the bathroom/shower alone, especially with the day visitors there on Saturday.
The cottage was tidy but very dirty walls, doors, dishcloths and blankets. The dishwashing sponge had been used more than once and the drying rack had a sticky greasy coating on it. I went to buy cleaning products that include jik. The kitchen is not fully equipped. Hot water was a death knell for sure. Even if we went to ask for hot water the water took about 1 hour to 1.5 hours to get hot enough for us to take a shower. There is no sitting area at the braai. There is a long table with chairs on a bunch of loose stones that we couldn't use. The living room does not have enough seating for 8 people.
Charming, rustic garden setting and beautiful pond and grounds. Unfortunately let down by honeymoon suite. Not four star quality I expected! Walls needed repainting- stained in bathroom. Carpets and curtains shabby. No decoder available and TV aerial seemed to be non-functioning. Menu not four star and no decent wine list. No Security at the front gate - left wide open at night with no visible security guard/cameras.
Hot water all around would assist.
The day visitors must be limited and check-out time for day visitors must be limited to 17:00 as long-term visitors cannot fully utilize the facilities on holidays, due to the influx of day visitors. The resort was a mess after Christmas Day due to the influx of day visitors.
Hornbill Lodge is on a beautiful farm with nice hiking trails in the area. They are very pet friendly (dogs) and have a very nice pool and nice on-site restaurant. The campsite is so beautiful you are surrounded by huge trees and feel like you are deep in the woods, but because the campsite is right next to a very busy road, traffic can make a big noise especially in the evening. The ablution block for the campsite is also a bit uncomfortable as it is shared with the main bathroom on the premises and as campers do not really have any privacy, it is also about 200 m from the site itself. Otherwise, the people are really very friendly and helpful.
Swimming pool and area beautiful and enjoyable for both young and old. Camp facilities need work, but even so, what a lovely place and owners and staff are all beautiful people!
Hornbill Lodge is great for a weekend away with family or friends. The lodge is clean and provides everything you need.
It was nice to visit a place where people are still friendly and smile. The food was top notch. A very big plus is that you are animal friendly. Thank you, we had a wonderful weekend and rested well with you. Will definitely visit again.
We had a lovely time and will definitely go back again.
Owner Cobie received me warmly and made me feel at home. The restaurant decor with its fireplace is an environment where you can spend hours, walking out to the swimming pools is a real holiday feeling and useful a glass of wine on the river bank is a must. The interior is filled with the best dishes presented by Cobie junior who really does his job well. I would recommend Hornbill Lodge to any person for a soul retreat.
It was just what the doctor recommended. Keep up the excellent service.
If you want to get away from your busy and hectic life, this is a great place to unwind and relax.
It was incredibly nice and so peaceful. Very nice place for a short weekend break. It is safe enough that we could do the hiking trail at 7 o'clock in the evening and go see the stars at the top of the mountain. The dogs there are too beautiful and very friendly. It's nice and private if you go off season. All bad thing is that there is a road located close to the lodge.
We got a friendly reception and everyone went out of their way to make our experience comfortable and to ensure special requests are attended to.
This is an exceptional resort, and everyone is very friendly, hospitable and helpful. The scenery is breathtaking. Unfortunately there is only one large bathroom, close to the pools but a long way from the caravan / tent pitches and may be a problem for a family with small children. But for us as a family, the noisy traffic was the biggest problem, which is a shame, because it's a really fun place, with interesting corners everywhere. The R24 is very close to the resort, which means that if you're camping you hear everything very clearly and don't get much rest during the night. This may not be the case if you stay overnight in one of the rooms.
It was great to spend time with friends in a clean, friendly and peaceful place.
It was so nice, and the people were so friendly and helpful. Stunning place!
Baie dankie vir alles. We really had a great weekend at Hornbill Lodge. LekkeSlaap service was excellent.
Campsite was neat and trash is removed daily. Friendly and helpful staff. The bathrooms isn't that far and it is clean. The traffic also didn't really bother us as in other people's reviews. Had a very nice stay and will definitely go again.
Took my mother away for her birthday and had a special, memorable time at this resort. Definitely want to take the whole family there for a relaxing, pampering weekend away at Hornbill Lodge. Thank you for making our weekend unforgettable.
Very nice Lodge in the heart of the winding with friendly and involved staff. Also really enjoyed the spa treatment. Legends Restaurant offers value for money.
Excellent hospitality, congenial visit, rooms are fantastic, incredibly tasty food. Bathroom - bath too small, shower head not always so nice but otherwise it was incredibly nice.
Friendly service and good value for money. Peaceful escape from the city yet close enough for a weekend breakaway.
Very peaceful. Waiters aren't all fully trained. Larger variety of dishes on menu will make the choice easier.
The manager is very helpful and mindful. We enjoyed the visit, meals and natural beauty. Will definitely visit again in the nuwe future.
A stunning camp site with beautiful rock outcrops and a river. Toilets are a bit too far from the camp site though. The staff were very friendly and the restaurant's food delicious. The pool area is also lovely and attracts many day visitors. Overall a wonderful stay!
Very nice place, the ablution is only about 200 meters from the nearest campsite. At least the place is quite cheap and worth it.
Area beautiful. The cottage needs an incredible amount of work. Everything looks cheaply put together. It feels like the place is not finished. Really not worth the money and we paid 40% less.
Inconveniences include: Only one eating area but bar stools too high so you have to hunch over yourself to eat at the table (lovely granite surface). Cheap strip neon lights across the house. Cheap door handles pierced t-shirt and almost cut my hands. Sofas and cushions ancient and dirty. Aircon units didn't work. Windows super thin and curtains insufficient and badly hung. In some rooms there are blinds that are see through, letting in light. Blind drop down and roll up cords not working so manually had to roll up the blinds. Very squeaky and uneven wooden floors so noisy when walking around. Doors not properly lockable and no burglar bars on windows (security guard patrolling on site though). Kitchen fully equipped but with very cheap utensils and crockery. Drawers in various cabinets don't open properly so cannot use - some were off the rails when we arrived. Light bulbs missing on stove top and in bedrooms upstairs. One double bed mattress very poor quality with springs pushing to the surge of the mattress Downstairs living room rug was filthy.Taps in bathrooms upstairs. Plug adapter missing so one beside lamp not usable. Old sponge and only 2 tea towels in kitchen - no replacement. Last of all, noisy. You hear the constant revving and whirr noise of the trucks and motorbikes on the nearby roads - at all hours and every day (Sunday and public holidays). Unfortunately not much can be done about this and we got used to it after a couple of days. Positives include: Setting is absolutely beautiful - great river access and beautiful pools. Some semi exotic birds and a pig for the children to look at and pet. Owner was very welcoming and friendly and made effort to address our concerns. Service from staff was friendly and courteous. Lots of towels and good pillows and duvets. Modern fridge, fully functioning oven and electrical stove top. Pet friendly: enjoyed a couple of nice walks with our dog. Not maintained but lovely setting - not worth what we paid for it relative to other accommodation in the area. Would return if it was better maintained and/or priced more reasonably.
Beautiful, clean, friendly and helpful. Enjoyed the animals, children enjoyed the swimming. Food was excellent.
Hornbill Lodge is 'n rustige en pragtige plekkie. Die diens was uitstekend! Sal beslis weer besoek.
All the staff were friendly and helpful. Cobie was very accommodating for the entire duration of our stay. I would recommend the lodge to others.
Might just inform people that the location is right next to a busy road, just FYI; not that you hear it from the rooms or restaurant, but outside at night. Then I would recommend fireplaces in the rooms, as in the restaurant it adds a lot to the atmosphere. But other than that we really enjoyed it, didn't want to return home and the food was phenomenal!
Warm welcome and direct contact with owners is a plus. Definitely pet friendly. Delicious food and great presentation. Cool, spacious camping site, but ablution facilities are a bit far. We will definitely be back.
Als great, apart from ablution facilities far from campsite and the main drainage system has a problem. The smell is not pleasant. Owner must pay attention to it.
Host was extremely helpful.
The garden in front of the rooms is completely neglected. Urgently needs attention. Black algae on the ceiling of the bathroom is horrible. Definitely a two star place. Not value for money.
Rooms are very basic and cold. The food was enjoyable except salad should not have been served. Staff friendly and pleasant. Better for a summer stop-over but the place really needs some maintenance
I'm a dog lover but there were dogs all over the place and dogs swimming in the swimming pools as well. The windows of the door leading to the back was dirty. The back area as well looks like it wasn't cleaned as we found dry leaves and dirt. The road on the way in is small and you can't see a car coming in front of you as it is a one way road and up-hill.
We rested well but, unfortunately, the bathrooms are broken, loose tiles and showers are blocked, it was not nice at all. There was no toilet paper most of the time. The bathrooms are very far from the campsite and there is no dishwashing area. I would not recommend taking children there at all. People are friendly. Campground is a lot of dirt, no grass. The area is beautiful though. But the dogs bark an awful lot, especially between 7 and 11 in the evening.
I actually don't want to give everything zero stars, but unfortunately I can. Apparently this is a 4 star lodge! Never! When we got there, 1 star was also taken off the board. I am really extremely disappointed. What I saw in the pictures was not to be expected! The room and beds weren't even made up! Not even fresh coffee was put out. Not even decent soap was provided. Cheap liquid soap was poured into an old, wrinkled, broken pump bottle. The springs from my child's bed came through and hurt her. We couldn't even get breakfast the last morning. They serve it way too late. Felt very unsafe and my little girl was scared. The place is in the woods, near the main road. The gate of the lodge is not even closed. Free access from anyone can be expected!
We had a nice relaxing weekend. Food was awesome and everyone made us feel welcomed.
Very nice and friendly environment. Nice for a short break and rest.
Beautiful place, neat and clean. Staff very considerate and helpful... we really enjoyed it!
Please see the stars.
Lekker!!!!!! Most enjoyable. Excellent food and the Els family are the perfect hosts. Staff friendly and helpful.
It was really peaceful and nice. We were there with our married children and granddaughter. It was fun for everyone, just a bit cold because it's winter time, but yes, I would recommend it to others.
I have already emailed Kobie my complaints. The bathrooms are far from the campsite. There is no privacy in the showers and the water pools in the showers. The toilets do not flush properly. There is a busy road near the lodge. There is no TV so you can watch rugby, nor is there a shop at the lodge for milk and bread.
Would not rate Hornbill Lodge as 4 star.
One of the rooms of the chalet was mouldy with unpainted walls. The room have a bad smell of damp and the owner denied it. The communal area of the chalet was small for 8 people accommodation and the couches were tacky. The grounds had animal poo around the pool. Unhygenic for small children who were with us. The owner/manager was unpleasant to deal with. We were forced to return home - a most disappointing Easter holiday for me, my friends and our children: 8 people inconvenienced.
Hornbill Lodge can be recommended to anyone looking for something different - there is the lovely silence, the river, lots of trees with shade, and the food is not neglected. The atmosphere is peaceful, the staff and management are very friendly. For those who want to visit, the facilities are there; for those who want to rest in silence, the facilities are also there. The prices are reasonable, the accommodation spacious, comfortable and spotlessly clean. The whole site is well maintained, even in the parts where there is only field. A paradise!
It is definitely a place to rest. My partner and I enjoyed ourselves so much, found and enjoyed each other. Thanks to the staff!
It is in a quiet area and close enough to the dam. It was very cold at the weekend, but the fireplace was great.
We really did enjoy our stay here. The kids, and I, found it really difficult to leave. Thanks indeed for a great holiday!
The stay was nice! The food they serve you was very tasty. They did everything with a passion. If you had a problem with anything, they helped you right away. Would recommend them!
The rooms are spacious and comfortable. The staff is very hospitable and helpful. The Restaurant has a nice cozy atmosphere, especially the fireplace. Furthermore, Hornbill is truly a must on your visit list.
It is a beautiful place and the people are friendly and the service is good. Will definitely go again for a longer time.
Friendly staff, the room was clean and a nice size, as was the bathroom.
It was a very nice and quiet place, except for trucks passing by on the main road. The hiking trails could only be more clearly marked, especially along the river.
A cozy atmosphere and peaceful surroundings. Rooms very neat!
For our purposes it was nice. Very close to the main road which is very busy and quite noisy. The house's facilities themselves were very nice and well equipped and the service was very good. Restaurant's food was very nice, but there is no alternative.
Lengend Restaurant's meals are excellent!
It was very quiet.
We stayed for 2 nights for our wedding anniversary. Food prices were very expensive and had almost no options. Drink prices were even worse - one SA beer was priced at R38.50! The room was clean but needs a lot of love and attention. Our room was also just under one of the busiest roads in the area, day and night. Cell phone reception was not so good - no WiFi or bar fridge in room. However, the pool and surroundings were very "nice".
The place can be very nice if it is spruced up. They are currently busy with construction after it burned down.
See the stars.
Wow we had a lovely stay, thank you so much! Breakfast, mmhh, is excellent. Don't have words ... I think everybody should visit this place, it's amazing!
Everything about our stay was great.
Awesome weekend away with hubby....Thanks to all Hornbill Logde's staff the kiddies that helped, the 4 legged friend that kept an eye out for us during the night it was fantastic as well as Caroline for organizing our picnic on the river bank it was so romantic....
Found dinner to be quite expensive. Then had an excellent dinner at Dark Horse, which was quite a bit cheaper, with drinks included. The rest of the stay was most enjoyable.
Decent.
We went there to relax and spent some quality family time with the kids. All our expectations were exceeded. The food was excellent. Highly recommended.
My weekend stay at Hornbill was fantastic!! Was very sad when we had to leave ... :(
Our hosts were attentive and very friendly, even though we were the sole guests. Our only possible negative is that some of the linen could be replaced.
