Good service, we were surprised with their hospitality.
There was a calculation error between the website and House of York. Care must be taken to ensure that quotations are correctly passed on to the customer.
We only stayed overnight and arrived late in the evening and left again early in the morning. Everything was clean and comfortable. I just would have liked information in advance about load shedding schedules in the area. We had barely arrived when darkness suddenly descended and it was pitch black in a strange place. Other accommodation bookings have sent the schedule for the day to their guests for convenience. I am also used to the fact that at previous accommodation there are at least coffee bags and sugar available for the number of guests. We didn't travel with coffee and sugar and had to scramble the next morning to find a place to buy coffee. We did make an assumption that there would be availability as this is the norm with most accommodation (even if it is self-catering). As rural people, we are not used to the city and the environment made us feel very unsafe. Apart from all this, the accommodation was neat and we slept peacefully. The rest of the communication had also been good.
I, as a woman alone with 2 children, drove through from Bloemfontein. The area around the accommodation is run down, with a lot of people just sitting on corners or wandering around. This is a very unsafe area. When I arrived the man who opened the gate did not know who I was and that I had booked to stay there. We had to wait outside in the unsafe area until they called to see if I had booked a place. I was told that I could add breakfast for an extra amount, but when I arrived and wanted to add breakfast, I was told that they had not served breakfast for a long time. Parking is a big problem with very little parking. The staff are friendly when you could locate them. I was given a completely different room than I booked, without any communication. I was given a quote and later it was added that I now have to pay an extra R3 for a third person.

Very friendly and helpful staff, the house is well equipped with pool, billiard, table soccer, etc., safe location with secure parking, close to shopping mall, restaurants etc.
Hospitable reception in a fun accommodation. No central heating but a cozy fireplace against the winter cold in Johannesburg.
Would definitely recommend this owner's guest house any day. Stayed at House on Hill last time and service was also excellent just like now. Very centrally located and very safe, clean and tidy.

House on York's rooms are very large and clean.
The fact that the Guest House is located in an older part of Kensington may not be ideal. However, it is very neat, clean, comfortable, safe and only 1 km from Eastgate Mall.
I really enjoyed it, would like to go again in the summer to use the pool and sauna.

From the day of arrival till departure, Gavin Smith and his staff were very accommodating and hospitable and friendly. Our rooms were cleaned daily and comfortable. Thank you for a wonderful stay.
We were received very kindly and the place is very neat. Gavin went out of his way to make us feel at home. Would recommend the place to stay overnight.
