62 guests' feedbackFantastic stay! Breathtakingly beautiful, clean, tidy, private, hiking trails in the mountains and couldn't possibly be closer to the mountains!
Very welcoming hosts giving good advice on hikes starting from the cabin, well equipped kitchen and super braai facilities. Cosy fireplace was perfectly set up with wood every day. Thanks!
We had a wonderful, relaxing time. The setting of the cabin is just perfect, right up against the mountains. There are several walks to do, all well marked, taking you into the forests and nearby falls. Thank you to Paul and Ricky for sharing your wonderful piece of heaven with us.
10 out of 10. Warm friendly welcome from Ricky on our arrival. The best location out and out in the mountains. Very well equipped unit, you can really only bring clean clothes and food. The rest is provided, even wood to keep the indoor stove and braai fire going. Truly a gem amongst the Drakensberg with a mountain stream babbling in the background. Here you become one with nature. Thank you very much Ricky & Paul.
It was perfect. I loved the fact that it was mid winter but the cabin was still cosy with the fireplace and electric blanket. The kitchen has everything you need, even a corkscrew! Housekeeping is also done daily, and fresh towels too! Hosts are just wonderful, and the dogs were friendly too. It's a perfect getaway from reality and the world. Will definitely revisit.
The location is breathtaking, from the drive in up to and including the views from the cabin. The welcome from Ricky was warm, and you could see the pride they had in their accommodation and showing us around. The cabin was lovely, clean, and well-equipped with everything we needed. Lots of firewood was a huge plus, and we enjoyed the fireplace. The access to the reserve's hikes was an amazing treat; Nandi Falls was beautiful. Thank you for sharing your slice of heaven with us.
Quiet, secluded and incredibly beautiful! "Cabin" was clean and tidy and everything one needs. Fireplace was nice for the cold evenings. Friendly reception.
What an amazing time we have had! It is a beautiful place in the middle of the Drakensberg with very well-kept hiking trails. You constantly hear the water stream and are so aware of the beauty of creation. The cabin is lovely and very well equipped. The fireplace is a winner. The hosts are very hospitable and friendly. I can recommend the stay with great confidence to anyone wanting to get away for some peace and quiet, and ample hiking trails to burn off some energy.
What a nice place. It is clean and beautiful. The owners are so kind and helpful. We stayed for four days. We will return one day. Thank you very much.
We had a lovely stay! Perfect location for the adventure seekers. We loved hiking here. We didn't need anything as the hosts cater well for their guests. 10/10 would recommend.
Enjoyed our stay with trails well marked on map and a friendly host with good knowledge of trails.
We had a great, comfortable stay. The hosts were excellent, explaining details of all the beautiful walks and amenities in the area, and making us feel at home. Pack good walking shoes, a hat and sunscreen, a water bottle and you are ready to explore one of the most magical places around.
We had a very nice stay. Thank you very much. We will come again for sure.
Amazing place, it is now our favorite getaway.
We enjoyed our stay very much! We loved the view from our cabin and the hiking trails.
We had an incredible time at iKhayalamafu Mountain Reserve. The house was very well-equipped and comfortable with stunning views. However, the number one selling point is the fact that it is located right next to a range of wonderful private trails that take you straight into the forest, up to the peaks, and across gorgeous waterfalls. The hosts were wonderful, and we would have no hesitation in recommending visitors to come.
Good destination for walkers, bird watchers and nature lovers.
Cannot get closer to the mountains. Hosts were very kind and friendly. We would highly recommend iKhayalamafu. Stunning hikes and birding.
This truly is a gem of a place. It has an incredible location in the indigenous mountain forest, along with magnificent views and a cacophony of birdlife. There are excellent hikes and plenty of silence to relax in. Paul and Ricky are fantastic hosts, very friendly and accommodating. I will definitely be back soon!
The most beautiful place. Peaceful. The birds are incredible. The cottage is warm and cosy with everything you need. The owners are friendly and helpful. I will be back again.
If a KIA Picanto can make the mountain road any car can. The hospitality was amazing. We felt at home and welcome. The cottage is straight out of a fairy tale.
My husband and I stayed at iKhayalamafu for 4 nights. The cabin is fully self-catering with beautiful finishes and is extremely clean. The site itself is magnificent - settled in amongst the trees at the base of the mountain. We took a walk one morning to Nandi Falls which is a moderately challenging walk/hike within the reserve. The hosts, Paul and Ricky, were warm and welcoming. We will definitely, without question, be back.
We had such a wonderful stay in the Ingwe chalet. Feeling like we are staying in the forest. It is nice and private and well appointed. The walk to the Nandi Falls is definitely worth it. When you get over the first hump, the most beautiful view of Champagne Casle peak awaits you. iKhayalamafu is definitely the "khaya in the clouds"!
See stars.
Breathtaking view, clean air, silence, water streams, mountains and more mountains. What more can I say?
Very well equipped with everything we needed. Friendly and knowledgeable hosts. Beautiful hike on the property.
Very well furnished and friendly owners.
My wife and I had a wonderful 4-day stay for our honeymoon. The unit is very clean and you are truly secluded and surrounded by nature. The 2nd unit is about 20-30 meters away, and the owners stay in the main house up the hill, about 30 meters away. You get direct access to a large amount of hiking trails of varying difficulties. We only walked 2 of them, and they were truly a sight to see as you get to walk alongside the mountains and through valleys with the most stunning views. Occasionally, while out, the units are cleaned and tidied up. We did not expect this so we were a little surprised, but it was a nice-to-have. The braai areas are also cleaned daily. All in all, we had an amazing stay and would definitely come back!
It's beautiful and the hiking trails are definitely worth it. One negative point is that there is no swimming pool on site so if you get hot you have to take a shower!
The 2 chalets are secluded and in the woods. The birdsong that wakes you up is very special. The view is breathtaking when one takes the hike up the mountain. The two track path, by which access is gained from Monks Cowl car park, already reveals the seclusion of the location of the chalets. The hiking trails are very well maintained and you immediately know that the owners take pride in their presentation of the facilities. Highly recommended for any couple looking to break away from the ordinary.
There are many hiking trails to keep you busy, nice to clear your head, fantastic! Definitely a getaway destination on my list.
Breathtakingly beautiful. Definitely worth every penny.
Felt the stress of city live melt away as soon as we arrived.
Paul and Ricky were the best hosts. Advance: We had never been to the Champagne Castle area before, and asked Ricky for some recommendations beforehand. She sent back promptly and we visited just about every place on her list. During: Upon our arrival, Paul was on hand to give us an introduction to the area and the many hiking trails that start on our doorstep. He talked us through the popular as well as the more difficult routes and piqued our curiosity to go hiking immediately. The cottage is amazing and although we only stayed there for 2 nights, we could have easily stayed longer. There is a fireplace with enough wood in the room, a CD player with the best combination of golden oldies and a view that will leave your mouth hanging open when you wash the dishes. There are also enough day hikes to keep you busy for more than a week, especially if you're a little fit. All the routes start on your doorstep and are clearly described and laid out on a map in your cottage. They provide more than the basic necessities under the self-catering 'label', but if you have forgotten something, the nearest shop has a good stock and is not too expensive. We drove away and already started booking our next visit.
There were nice hiking trails, fresh water and friendly owners.
We stayed in the Inyoka Cabin. Very clean, tidy, everything you could ask for. Fireplace in the room worked overtime. Enough wood was provided for fireplace and barbecue. Hiking trails nicely marked, forests, waterfalls, caves, mountains all around, can't describe how beautiful it is. Will definitely go back again.
We'll see them again soon!
Located in the mountains. Beautiful views. Challenging hiking trails that allow you to experience unbelievable views.
As much wood as you can make a fire with. Good service, with a waterfall right next to your room. Very special.
Ikhayalamfu is really a gem we discovered. The Ikhayalamafu hiking trails start right in front of your door and also lead to several hiking trails from Monk's Cowl. The reception was very welcoming. It is clear that the owners have a passion for their place. We will definitely go there again!
The walks in the area of iKayalamfu were spectacular and wondrous. The rainy weather did not dampen spirits because of the beauty of the place and in spite of the rain, a walk was possible on most days. The beauty of the area is beyond description. Our hosts were most considerate and did everything they could to ensure our comfort in spite of the weather which was not ideal.
The four nights at iKhayalamafu were very special for us. The breathtaking scenery, private walking paths and comfortable accommodation were exceptional.
Ricky and Paul, thank you for sharing a piece of private paradise with us. Thank you for your kindness and genuine care. The visit to you made for a magical, unforgettable birthday. The pure fresh air, the crystal clear mountain water all around us, the special views and the lovely birdsongs of the rich bird life I will always cherish in my heart. It was fantastic to be so one with nature. The cottage is extremely comfortable and spacious, there was more than enough firewood (even enough fine wood), fresh flowers in the bathroom, everything testified to a sincere and personal care for your guests. We definitely recommend iKhayalamafu Mountain Reserve to everyone. Our stay was far too short, but we will definitely return for more magic.
Privacy and serenity
It was great to share in a small piece of paradise even though our stay was short. We plan to return soon.
This place is such a gem. The Cabin is cosy and we absolutely loved the fireplace in the bedroom. If you are looking for a breakaway, this is the place to go. The views are amazing from the cabin, and there is no better place to enjoy your morning coffee than on the deck of the cabin! We especially loved all the trails we could do. All the trails start right at your doorstep and you will get to see the most amazing scenery here. We loved hiking to Nandi falls, walking through the forest trail with all the small waterfalls and all the way up to the famous Sphinx and Crystal Falls. This place is just magical! Thanks, Ricky and Paul for having us. We will most definitely be back soon!
It's truly picturesque with the forest on your porch and peaceful streams, with many hiking trails. Truly the best place to rest.
Very romantic location with the most beautiful forest and mountain views. Lovely hosts.
It was our first time in the Drakensberg and we couldn't have asked for better. We had a great time walking, sleeping and visiting!
Great hosts. Very special place to be; scenic and mountain climbing areas. Cabins very cozy and pleasant.
Best accommodation to fully experience and view the mountains. It's far enough away to feel tucked away, but close enough to other attractions. The lovely walking trails are in good condition and start at your front door. Large, extremely comfortable cottage has everything you need, is very cozy and surrounded by pure natural beauty. There is also plenty of wood for braai and fireplace fires. Thank you for allowing us to share your private gem for a while.
It was an incredible experience. At iKhayalamafu you become part of nature. Very cosy, private cottage in the woods and mountains with everything you need. One of the most beautiful trails we have ever walked from our own front door. Thank you for your hospitality, Paul, Ricky, Hector and Sheba. You will definitely see us again.
We had a great stay. The walking paths are nicely marked and the fresh mountain air was wonderful. Fireplace and king-size bed win!
IKhayalamafu is a jewel in the heart of the Central Drakensberg. It is highly recommended. The nature, fresh mountain air, safe hiking trails, friendly host/wife make this stay something very special.
If you're looking for peace far from the noise, this is the place to be. And it has bushveld character too!
We feel that a register should be kept of when and which walking trails one will be on. We got a bit lost and it was scary.
Wonderful sounds and fresh mountain air. The views was awesome and the quiet nature surrounds you. Private and relaxing. This place is an all in one package. A must to visit. Just breathtaking.
We enjoyed our stay very much. The reserve is situated deep into the mountains, far away from everyday distractions. The forest surrounding the cabins are filled with cheery birdsong and the stream passing the cabins provide a relaxing background noise. Room service is great, and the cosy fireplace kept us warm during the night.
Fantastic area. Pretty accommodation in the mountains. Hiking trails a great experience.
We felt so relaxed after just one day. Nearly cried when we left having spent 7 nights. Paul and Ricky are the most caring and attentive hosts. They made our stay so special and their love for the mountain is shown through their wonderfully well kept hiking trails, best hikes ever, for the exclusive use of their guests. Sheba and Hector, the Great Danes will be missed! Treat yourself and your partner to this dream getaway.
Thanks to Paul and Ricky for sharing their wonderful piece of paradise with us. It was absolutely perfect. It is definitely a destination I would recommend to every person.
These two little houses are ideal for anyone who likes remote places where nobody ever pass by. The two houses are in the forest with various rare forest bird species in the vicinity. The only difference is that Ingwe has a deck with a view of the Sterk River Valley. Both units are well equipped and the owners provide enough wood to keep the indoor fireplace burning all day long in the cold, rainy weather. The owners Ricky and Paul are always willing to handle any problem and provide advice about the area (like attending a concert of the Drakensberg Boys Choir, for which Ricky even booked us tickets). The water- and solar energy is sufficient, even when the sun doesn't shine for days on end. The sweetest water.
