We offer you a luxurious stay in our farmhouse previously occupied by 3 generations of sheep farmers. The house can accommodate 8 to 10 people in 4 bedrooms and a patio room. One of the attractions is two very big porches with a wonderful view of sheep and springbok drinking and grazing. In the winter a nice fire place, underfloor heating in the bathroom and electric blankets with cosy bedding to keep you warm.
Our newest attraction is the Old Wagon Suite. Build out of beautiful Karoo stone and newly restored to its original two storey height. The Old Wagon Suite is perfect for a family of four looking for a quiet weekend away. With its beautiful views of the Karoo high lands, beautiful stone porch and braai it lends itself for the perfect place to make some new memories or to relieve some old once.
Summer in the Karoo brings romantic views of the sun set while swimming in a farm dam renovated as a swimming pool.
We offer late afternoon drives, that include enjoying the Karoo stars on the way back, as well as plenty of farm roads for long walks or mountain bike rides. If you are interest in Khoisan paintings, we offer a morning drive where you can look at astonishing sketches.
If you are tired after a long day of sightseeing, you can sit down with something to drink while the more energetic can keep on looking for more undiscovered sketches. If you want to join the farmer in the everyday work it will be a pleasure to share his everyday joy. Horses are used to do the farm work and you can experience goats feeding orphan lambs.
Joosteswerwe is also home to 3 experience Tent Pegging riders, if you are interested in discovering this beautiful equestrian sport, they would be happy to show you their unique discipline and maybe teach you a few tricks as well.

Wow, what an incredibly special place. We regret not having stayed longer. Clean, well-maintained, and perfectly furnished. An absolute must if you love the Karoo.
Lovely converted building. Comfortable overnight stay in a beautiful location.
Lovely stay on the farm. The children had fun swimming in the pond and having a barbecue outside was nice.
It was very nice, peaceful, clean. Will definitely go again.
Shut up, Karoo. Friendly people and the place is unique and so so comfortable and very nice.
Was very nice on the farm.
It was wonderfully nice, hospitable and pleasant.
Very nice stay in the big farmhouse. The house is like a time capsule. We have 3 children under 6, 1 of which is a small baby. The older brothers almost enjoyed themselves with the open field freedom. The house has a lot of space and is nice and cool when it's very hot. The bedding is cuddly and the towels dry nicely. The water from the shower head squirts out deliciously. There is also a small honesty rack inside the house with dry sausage, biltong, jam and spices which was really cute that we could buy from. The swimming pool is just behind the house, locked, so the youngsters were safe when we were busy inside the house. We would recommend Joosteswerwe to anyone who wants to escape city life and who is not afraid of proper rest, dirt road, silence and little to no cell phone signal.
Yes. The stairs to the top (bedroom) are very short and you have to climb carefully, especially if you go down to the bathroom and don't want to turn on a light.
We traveled with our adult children and mother and it was an adequate stay over en route back home. The stars at night is spectacular.
We haven't had such a good time visiting and resting for a long time. Big thanks. The dam was a pleasant experience. We would happily book to stay there again. Marina is an excellent hostess.
Wow, what an experience. The house is between nothing and nowhere. The teenagers really enjoyed the pool! The accommodation is comfortable, beautiful and well furnished. The barbecue under the stars is incredible for us city lads. We regret not staying another day!
Very friendly hosts who make you feel like part of the family. Here you can fully experience the beauty of the Karoo.
Would definitely recommend!
The true Karoo experience. Very nice and neat. Large, spacious house. Nice swimming pool for cooling off in the Karoo heat. Will definitely come again.
Really enjoyed the beauty and silence!
Very peaceful, nice stay. Beautiful view and at night the stars are the most beautiful! House has been kept special and original as much as possible!
We really enjoyed our stay, because we were looking for peace and quiet. The house is basic but very comfortable. It is about 15km off the main road, and needs a dirt road to reach it, so probably not for people who don't like dirt roads. The bird life was wonderful. Note the house only has one bathroom for the four bedrooms. Ask for biltong ahead of time, we wished we had.
Had a great time!
Beautiful place and very well maintained and equipped.
The unit is well furnished with everything you need. It had been a very nice evening. Could enjoy the stars.
Star gazing was the highlight. . The house and amenities were clean and comfortable. There was detail to the décor to create an authentic Karoo farm stay. Would have loved to have stayed longer and experienced more of the farm life.
The 14km dirt road to Joosteswerwe Guest Farm is well worth it to get to the gem. We were given up to two bags of firewood to ward off the cold by the indoor fireplace, were also privileged to see sheep shearers in action, just blissful to go for a walk in the field and come back to an extremely neat farmhouse with all possible amenities.
After 45 min and 14 km with 7 farm gates which was an experience for us to be able to be at the real farm atmosphere. Everything beautiful with real farm atmosphere in the farmhouse. Thank you very much for the experience we could have experienced at our age. Even the little rain when we left the next day was a blessing. Will definitely come back.
Make sure of type of vehicle in wet road conditions.
The hospitality was top notch. The dirt road to the farm is long, but in good condition, you have many gates to open. As soon as you arrived at the farm, it was all worth it. We stayed in the outbuilding which was redone, everything in our home was beautiful (rustic feel) and there was even a dishwasher, couldn't believe it. The swimming in the farm dam was different for the kids (the water was clean though). The best were the stars at night, with the clean air and distance from the town lights it was something to experience. Would have liked to have stayed longer.
Lovely visit next to the boma. However, power was off and wished that owners would just pop in to help us with gas or lamps.
The owners were very friendly and accommodating. I think they just need to elaborate a bit on the the fact that this accommodation is not situated just off the road. You need to travel quite a distance and open 5 gates to arrive at your destination. An experience I had as a child and have fond memories, but not everyone will appreciate.
Beautiful on the outside but impractical on the inside. Kitchen top way too narrow. No table with chairs. Must sit on lap and eat. Stairs to the top beautiful but dangerous. Spacing too narrow and certainly does not meet health and safety requirements. Induction stove very complex to operate without any manual. Sink impractical. Automatic dishwasher? Where is the special laundry soap? Who uses it for overnight purposes? Shower floor bitterly cold in winter. No rubber mat. Spout also half clogged. Water dams up. The sliding door in front of bathroom is very heavy and difficult to move so you have no privacy. Access road after rain inaccessible to sedan cars. Took us 45 min to get from guesthouse to tarmac in daylight with a 4x4. Many gates to open. Not suitable for overnight purposes.
We had the best time.
We drove a little deeper into the Karoo to get to know the area, we haven't driven around here beforehand. Enjoyed it immensely. The farm is lovely and we felt safe.
Had a great time. Will want to stay longer next time.
Large and comfortable house where we stayed one night on our way to the West Coast. The owners were very hospitable and waited for us on arrival. Everything was clean and tidy with clean linen in every room. Will stay here again.
Very comfortable house. We only stayed one night on the way to our destination. We pre-ordered meat and wood and it was ready when we got there. The children enjoyed the Plassdam. Everyone enjoyed the silence and clean air. The sunset and the moon rise were breathtaking.
Place very dry and place short of a lot of rain. But we enjoyed spending the night there.
See stars.
We needed a break for our family of four (kids 4 and 8), and this place exceeding our expectations at every turn. The hosts went above and beyond to share their life with us, a guided horse trip and a trip to the Khoisan engravings. There is a lot of attention to detail in the Old Wagon Suite which we loved, and the kids explored the wide spaces and took to the farm dam pool with relish. We will be back as soon as we can.
Our preference is for farm stays and this location was one of best that we have experienced. It is an easy transit from the tar to Joosteswerwe. We were asked to let our hosts know when we were leaving Carnarvon however we couldn't get signal but pressed on regardless. The instructions we had led us through the gates. A refreshing swim in the concrete dam helped us forget the hassle of a puncture we experienced. The youth of the family plugged the hole for us which did the job of getting us to De Aar for a patch. We were grateful for a breeze through the night which did the job of keeping us cool. Beyond delightful.
For the first time, as adults, we could see what was happening behind the distant bumps and dips. Make it the next holiday. Our children loved the quiet and remote world. The swimming in the farm pond, the bar, the accommodation. May many more people discover SA's greatest treasure. Viva the Karoo! Viva South Africa. Thank you for the Smitte and the Karoo people who protect and maintain the Karoo. It's a prehistoric world trapped in the slate, layer by layer.
The owners are extremely hospitable and our cottage was beautiful, comfortable and clean. Older people and those who have difficulty walking should preferably book the other accommodation as the cottage has a very steep staircase (must tread carefully on the way down). The braai area is lovely with a nice view. Their chops are lip-smacking - some of the best we've ever eaten.
Very neat place. Lovely bedding. Electric blankets were very welcome in the cold weather. Would love to visit the place again.
Friendly reception by owner. Very neat house very well equipped!
What an amazing experience far away from the city and noise. We stayed in the old Wa homestead and it was incredibly well equipped. Our hostess was very friendly and helpful and with good communication we easily reached the place. I do regret that we could not stay longer to experience the farm activities. Something that should be taken into account when you visit the farm is that it is 14 km of dirt road from the tarmac road and that there is also no signal. At night it is also pitch black, so if you turn on the light in the room, all the bugs come there.
The building inside and out is beautiful. It does not have air conditioning and can therefore get hot in the summer. The owner can pay attention to some small details to make it more comfortable, but we had a nice stay and really enjoyed swimming in the farm pond. Away from everything, even cell phone on catch. Saw springbok and red hearted cattle on the farm.
We slept at Joosteswerwe on the way to the West Coast. The location is ideal for travelers from Gauteng. The guest house is about 12km of well-maintained dirt road from the main road, but it ensures that genuine Karoo farm experience with kilometers of views over the plains and not another soul in sight. Marina received us with hospitality, and communicated several times on WhatsApp to hear how our trip was progressing, and also the next day to make sure everything was in order and we were on our way safely again. One thing to consider is that the whole area between Vosburg and Carnavon has poor Vodacom reception.
The people at Joosteswerwe really went out of their way to make us feel at home and entertain our boys with the farm things. We rented the full house, so it was a bit expensive for 5 people, but they made up for it with the visit to the working farm. We would not hesitate to stay there again.
Stayed in the converted barn and the owners were not home, which meant I was completely alone for kilometres - a lovely experience. Sunset and sunrise with only birds and frogs singing is worth it. Sitting on the veranda, reading, whilst the sun settles in a brilliant orange and pink glow was magical. I would not recommend the barn to older or less agile people as the stairs to the loft bedroom would be too dangerous to those of poor footing. The only negative was that the kettle was not usable and there wasn't really any alternative, but this is easy to fix by the owners. Other than that, as the owners were not home, their children met me at the accommodation and insulted me a little with some of their comments, which I am going to guess is down to the fact that I spoke English and did not arrive in a lifted suspension, fitted with everything plus the kitchen sink Toyota - remember never to judge people you do not know (in this instance I am certain for a fact that I have been many places these farmers will sadly never see yet was subjected to insulting comments out of nowhere that took me by complete surprise given that I was a guest). Be that as it may, the accommodation and the surrounding area still makes it worth one's while. Accessible via tar road and a +-15 km farm track that can be driven by any vehicle - just please, please stop speeding: I found a dead fox on a farm road, really now. The turn off to the farm road is well signposted and more or less halfway between Carnarvon and Vosburg (this is not made clear on booking websites). Be sure to stock up on all your meal requirements, firewood, firelighters, matches, etc. as it's a long drive to the nearest town if you do not have everything you need. Bring a plunger and good coffee. There is a fire pit outside and the location really lends itself to a nice fire to sit next to listening to the night sounds - bring what you'll need. Electric blankets on the bed help to fight off the winter nights. Bring a bicycle - the farm roads will call. I had a knock on my door at 5 am, which I just ignored as I was lying in bed (sunrise in winter is at 7:30 am). Not sure what that was about. Take a drive to Vosburg - stunning architecture and, as the signpost outside town says: "enjoy the trees". There is a dirt road between Vosburg and Prieska, if you are like me and want to avoid tar roads at all cost. I drove it with a hatchback, but most people will faint if they had to put their sedan on it as you do need nerves of steel and perhaps a bit of stupidity/crazy on your side to drive it without solid tyres, but luckily I was born with both.
Joosteswerwe is 7 farm gates away from the tarmac. It was a total getaway with little to no signal, which was great. The farm pond was delightfully cool and a big bonus. We stayed in the barn unit and it was really comfortably furnished especially the attention to detail (small dishwasher, etc.). We were very warmly received and felt very welcome. If you are really looking for silence and seclusion this is the place for you. Definitely a gem in the Karoo! We will definitely visit again.
Beautiful place, secluded quiet and beautiful. Hospitality wonderful. Well equipped.
The overnight stay was comfortable and tidy with a nice farm atmosphere and natural beauty. The children especially enjoyed swimming in the farm pond. Thank you very much for your hospitality, will definitely recommend Joosteswerwe!
This place and its hostess were a lovely surprise. We were warmly welcomed with mutton for our barbecue, which we ordered before the trip from the hostess. We stayed in the carriage house which has been beautifully restored with lots of modern touches. The farm pond swimming pool was a wonderful escape after the long, hot travel day. The braai area had plenty of wood and we could sit and watch the sun set over the Karoo. We will definitely stop here again and for longer reasons there was so much worship that we couldn't fit in. Thank you so much for this beautiful getaway.
We were pleasantly surprised with our place to stay, beautiful and peaceful. Everything you might need is there and although a few km from the main road it is definitely worth spending the night there. Dirt road to place of residence very nice. Wonderful peaceful environment after a stressful day on the road and you can really rest and recharge your batteries there.
Unfortunately we arrived late and left early the following morning, so did not have the opportunity to explore the farm. Accommodation of a very high standard, hosts super friendly, and the house is clean and has everything one needs. We loved everything about it.
Enjoyed the peace and open space with awesome stars at night.
Lovely old farmhouse with wooden floors and lovely peaceful veranda! Pool is a winner! The goats and lambs came to drink water. Have fun!
If you want to know what the Karoo is, then you must visit the place. Feel free to support them. Buy all the homemade spices and jams. They just need to stock more. It is very dry and we are praying for rain.
It was a very pleasant experience.
The Host and Hostess were very friendly and helpful. The old farmhouse was very comfortable and very clean. Our visit was short, but very nice.
Great place to stay for at least 2 nights on your way to / from the north to the south. Well furnished, very neat and clean and particularly peaceful in the middle of the Karoo. Deliciously relaxing.
Neat and peaceful accommodation. Definitely recommend it.
We stayed in the Old Wa Suite. Very historic building, nicely restored with interesting design. Everything very nice, clean and tidy, and peaceful! One can really enjoy the Karoo silence. Bring books to read! There is only MTN reception, not Vodacom or Cell C, but the owners provide a mobile phone with MTN so you can make urgent calls. The swimming pond is fresh, clean and ice cold! The bedroom is on a mezzanine floor, with steep steps, so maybe a problem for people who are not very steady on their feet - you have to tread carefully. But the view over the Karoo, from the top floor, is worth it! I would only suggest that a step be added so short people can reach the pots and pans! I also suggest providing a comfortable couch outside, so you can lie on your back and watch the stars! This place is heavenly. We were sad to drive away.
Clean, tidy and nice and quiet.
The place was just what we needed. Quiet and peaceful, well equipped, everything one needs. There is also a lovely clean farm pond to cool off. We will stay here again if the opportunity arises.
Extremely neat place in the middle of nowhere where one can relax. Everything needed is there, from meat, wood and a nice cool, clean pond. Beds and towels spotless. Would recommend to any person.
What a pleasant surprise Joosteswerwe was. Upon arrival the owner was there and the place had everything one needs. Neat clean and beautiful!
In addition to the cottage, the space was quiet and we could walk and just enjoy the quiet and nature.
We only slept a single night, as we were on our way through the Karoo. It was slightly further out of town than I realized, and the stairs to the bedroom are very steep. However, we slept well. We were generously received, there was wood available for the braai, the place was very well furnished and comfortable. We were able to walk around and had a great time relaxing. I would stay there again anytime if I get the chance and it's the ideal place to linger for a day or 2 with a book to recharge your batteries.
Comfortable, clean and beautiful accommodation. The springbucks that come to drink in the afternoon and the lightning in the distance while sitting around the fire is unforgettable. I will stay there again anytime.
Beautiful views, beautiful cottage, well-equipped for 2 people. There is other accommodation if you are more than 2 guests. Great walks & dam to cool off. Wonderful hosts & family. Lots of local produce for sale at the farm. Hope to be back soon and for longer!
Lovely place with a real Karoo farm feel. Warm welcome and pool and animals are a big plus for children. Bit of a long drive in, but absolutely worth it.
Very comfortable and very friendly owners!
Very clean and tidy farmhouse with pleasant owner who ensured that we received the keys on time and everything was in place on our arrival. Will definitely stay here again.
Quiet, beautiful Karoo nights and peace of mind.
The guest farm accommodation was good. We were welcomed in a friendly manner. It was nice not to have any contact with the outside. It was very peaceful and the stars at night was spectacular. It was extremely hot over December. The dam pool provided a cool down.
It was a wonderful experience to spend so much time in the Karoo on a working farm. Two days of soul rest and delicious Karoo mutton. The people couldn't do enough to make us feel welcome and the swimming in the farm dam was a highlight for everyone.
The carriage house is a lovely respite to the stark beauty of the Karoo. Beautifully remodelled, the carriage house is charming and complete with private outdoor braai area, perfect for sun-downers.
The house is beautiful and the farm offers a lot of photography opportunities.
Real Karoo experience. Joosteswerwe put me at ease. The open spaces and farm were an experience. Because I come from Gauteng my nerves started to gnaw the 1st night, Marina quickly put my soul at rest. Joosteswerwe's people were available at any time. The history and old farm goods are wonderful to look at. The horse cart is a must and the climbing and walking to see bushman drawings. The whole family is very hospitable. I have never experienced anything like this. Joosteswerwe, the farmhouse is amazing and the scenery is fantastic and good for one's soul. So I could see that there are still good people on earth. Thanks for everything. It's definitely something to experience, another world, but it was amazing. New stories and memories for a lifetime.
Would highly recommend it.
Had a friendly welcome. The house is in excellent condition and very tidy. We had such a good time on the big stoep and my little girl really enjoyed feeding the sheep.
If you want to experience unending views and exquisite sunsets, wildlife, comfortable farm house, braaing under the brightest stars ever seen and being woken by the sound of sheep bleeting. This guest farm is for you. Loved our overnight stay.
They went out of their way to make our very late arrival as comfortable as possible.
Joosteswerwe Guest Farm is a beautifully restored farmhouse in the middle of the Karoo. The house is fully equipped with everything a vacationer needs. We were kindly received by Monica and she made us feel very much at home. The peaceful farm atmosphere adds to the enjoyment of the experience. Next time we will definitely stay longer!
Our stay at Joosteswerwe was by far the best part of our 3 week holiday. Secluded and private, the house was spacious and well equipped. The clean farm dam was a wonderful relief from the heat and a perfect place to view the vastness of the Karoo from. We had 2 dogs and a cat with us - the fencing is proper and therefore our pets had plenty of space to roam free and yet could not get out into the veld. The best thing about this stay was the hosts. They made sure that we enjoyed every part of our stay! We were shown the operation of the farm and the kids were permitted to take part in the feeding of the animals. We had an awesome horse riding trip to the Boesman paintings, and every effort was made to ensure that each one of us enjoyed the trip at our specific level of riding. We were treated to scones and snacks from their Oom Plaas product, which I highly recommend. We will definitely return to this spot in the future and it is highly recommended.
This is the perfect Karoo farm getaway holiday home. Large, comfortable, well appointed and quiet. We would go again anytime and stay longer.
Marje has a beautiful home for guests after a long day's travel. Quiet bleating of sheep and spring goats around the house. Marje followed our journey to the farm to make sure we got there safely. And where do you still find a freezer full of meat today that you can use and all this on the basis of respectability.
A privilege to be able to sleep over in such an environment and home. Was able to swim in the farm pond and wash off the day's dust and barbecue meat under the stars. Will go again and stay longer.
Although the dirt road to the farm posed a great challenge to our low-profile tires, we were pleasantly surprised with the reception, the beautiful spacious farmhouse, amenities and extras and especially the absolute privacy. No detail was overlooked to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The views and tranquility were great and we were very sorry that we booked for one night only. We would love to visit the farm again in the future and will definitely stay for a few days.
We had a lovely stay at Joosteswerwe Guest Farm. The area is beautiful, die peacefulness of the farm is food for a city slicker's soul. The house has so much history and nostalgia and is very neat and well equipped. We definitely want stay there again, but next time for longer than just an overnight on our way to the West Coast. Thank you to the owners that they are willing to share this beautiful place with others.
The accommodation was clean, neat and very spacious. Typical countryside hospitality. Reception was very friendly. You feel welcome straight away. Had a good rest. Definitely recommend this to anyone who wants to relax and enjoy nature.
Fireplace and braai facilities outside. Crisp linen and electric blankets for a good night's sleep.
We had a great swim! What an experience. We got much more than we expected.
For everyone who's chasing the wind, come take a breath here.
Friendly superior peasant hospitality at its best. From delicious food to helping with fixing a flat tire at 04:00 in the morning. What a wonderful experience!
Enjoyed your stay! Hospitality tops. There are sheep, spring goats and a pond to cool off in very hot conditions.
We can recommend Joosteswerwe as a place to stay for a few days. It's ideal to recharge your batteries and simply enjoy the Karoo. The generous and warm reception by genuine people was really appreciated.
