Kapteinskloof Guest Cottage is situated on a smallholding in the West Coast region, between Piketberg and Velddrif, approximately 180 km north of Cape Town. The cottage is nestled in the beautiful valley of Kapteinskloof, and is one of the oldest original homesteads of this area.

Accommodation is offered in an original, charming sandveld cottage. Furniture is kept simple and uncluttered so as not to distract from the vernacular architecture of the walls and the windows. The smell of thatch as you walk in completes the earthy feel. The self-catering cottage can accommodate 2 to 6 guests, and is rented out as 1 unit to ensure guests privacy. The cottage is detached from the main house. Cutlery and crockery, bath towels, linen are provided. Please bring your own swimming towels. Firewood is available at R50 a bag.

The cottage comprises a separate room with a double bed and an en-suite bathroom, a second bedroom with 2 single beds and an en-suite bathroom, and a lounge/bedroom with an en-suite bathroom, and direct access to the kitchen. The cosy kitchen is equipped with an old Dover stove, a fridge, a microwave, a small oven, and hot plates. Please note there is no TV or radio in the rooms, and no cell phone reception. Guests can cool off in the spring-water swimming pool set in a grove of citrus trees.

In 1988 the playwright Pieter Fourie started to renovate the houses, which date back to 1831. Through his love and passion for old architecture and his dedication to detail, he managed to retain the sandveld character of the homestead, which is both simple, yet charming. Guests are invited to enjoy the country lifestyle; go for walks, bring your mountain bike, go for a drive off the beaten track, admire the spring flowers, or simply take a good book and find a spot under a tree and let time pass you by.

Pet policy: Pets are welcome (strictly by arrangement) as a guests need to take into account the other animals on farm. All dogs, horses and caged birds welcome all year round. Pets sleep inside; bring own pet beds, bedding and bowls. Stables are available for horses. Consideration must be given to resident dogs, cats, birds, horses, farm animals and wildlife. Please note: Dogs must be well-behaved and must not chase chickens or cats! Pets stay for free.

"A privilege to experience something of bygone days in such a beautiful, restored cottage, with such a beautiful setting."

Kapteinskloof Guesthouse is situated in a beautiful and watery gorge near Piketberg. It was a privilege to be able to stay in the beautifully restored cottage and we would love to go again. Years ago, I read an article about Kapteinskloof and its previous owners, the Fouries, and was my surprise great when I booked here and realised that the cottage in which we were accommodated was a restoration project of the Fouries. Kapteinskloof is a comfortable distance from Cape Town and Melanie and her team warmly welcomed us. Surrounded by blueberry and citrus orchards, we were deeply impressed by the peaceful and beautiful scenery. We didn't know the area, and it was great to discover the secrets of the Sandveld. Early in the morning we had a look at Piketberg and I even bought some gum boots for my own gardening. Then we drove to Velddrif for a delicious lunch on the lagoon, and for a walk through Laaiplek. We went back to Kapteinskloof for our own braai early that evening. Although the pool in the orchard, with fresh fountain water, looked extremely tempting, we left it for another time. There is also a hot tub for guests interested in such. Hopefully we will be able to visit the mission stations such as Moravia, Wittewater and Goedverwacht next time. It is good that cottages like these that are examples of our folk art are preserved and maintained.
