Karoo Art Hotel

The 15 rooms are all completely individual in character, some with beautiful views overlooking the village. Quirky, relaxed and comfortable, the Karoo Art Hotel offers its guests old-fashioned Karoo hospitality, a country experience with a twist that includes interesting artwork and colourful décor.
Whichever room you choose, you get that extra quality that counts; top-quality mattresses, soft percale linen and piping-hot showers. With the exception of the Garden Suite, all rooms are located on the first floor, some with views from balconies overlooking the village or garden. Other in-room facilities include in-room bathrooms with shower and bath, or shower only, fans, gas heaters, electric blankets, hairdryers, Wi-Fi and tea- and coffee-making facilities.
The restaurant is open for breakfast and dinner; serving great country food with a Klein Karoo twist. The hotel is a member of the international food guild Chaine des Rotisseurs and has established itself as one of the most popular stops for travellers on Route 62, offering a true Klein Karoo food and wine experience.
Guests love sharing a drink at the bar which is still the social heart of the village, and has been since 1888. There are often live music evenings in the bar that attracts a small, diverse, friendly crowd of young and old. Our gardens and large swimming pool are perfect for those hot summer days and the lounge with fireplace invites a glass of Klein Karoo port during winter months.
Barrydale is within easy reach of the famous Tradouw Pass, Warmwaterberg hot water springs, Barrydale Cellar, Joubert-Tradouw Private Cellar and the well-known lunch stop Ronnie’s Sex Shop. Other activities include hiking, mountain biking, quad biking, horse riding and so much more.

60 guests' feedbackAbsolutely stunning hotel, the beds were very comfortable, food was incredible, service 5 stars. Special mention must be made of Candice who went out of her way to assist us. Would definitely go back.
Lovely relaxing overnight stay with very rich history!
The stay was very nice, the atmosphere is nice and "cosy". We really enjoyed it, we had steak for dinner which was really not good, was a big disappointment.
Everything was beautiful when we got there. It was quite cold and raining, but inside the fireplaces were burning and we were warmly received. Service was unbeatable and we will definitely go back again.
Very comfortable with lovely art everywhere. Friendly staff with great management.
Staying at Karoo Art Hotel was nice!
Food is very good, people are friendly and the hotel is something unique. The bed does not sleep well, it urgently needs new firm mattresses! I didn't stay the last night because of back pain from the bed. Other than that it was all good, thank you.
Very interesting and pleasant stay. We were impressed with the preservation of antiquities.
The staff are friendly - if just a bit delayed in service - but it is a platteland dorp anyway. Dinner and breakfast were good. Great to have a pub downstairs for cocktails or a post-dinner drink with a huge selection to choose from. Was keen to utilise the pool but due to the Barrydale drizzle - had to settle for a book and a G&T on the veranda - which was just as relaxing.
The renovated hotel is great; we loved it when we stayed there in 2016 and loved it even more now. A job well done. The bartender was amazing and our bangers and mash were 'top class'.
We enjoyed the fact that this accommodation has backup power for fans and lights. I wish other hosts in SA could do the same. We really enjoyed the dinner choice from a cookbook, very unique and sumptuous.
Yes, we did. We toured from Centurion, via the West Coast to Cape Town, and back again via Barrydale. We stayed in many places over 2 weeks. The hotel was the most expensive, the price was a bit high.
The hotel is something special and the whole stay was peaceful and wonderful.
Hotel gives the atmosphere of yesteryear and Barrydale like oasis, great restoration.
What a surprise in the small town of Barrydale. Neat and clean accommodation with incredibly tasty meals, make it a must stay! Coffee is part of me and it's refreshing to get good quality coffee, even in a small town. Well done Rick and his team. Definitely see you again.
The Hotel was an oasis in the Karoo.
If you are travelling Route 62, then the Karoo Art Hotel in Barrymore is an absolute must. The decor is wonderful. So much to look at and explore. They are not quite perfect yet, having just undergone renovations but the staff and owners make me feel at home immediately and asked for feedback, which, once given, was seen to immediately. And the food is divine. I was presented with a mouth watering choice on the menu. Always a tricky decision when it all looks good! The bed was clean and comfortable and the issues that I had with the room were in the process of being fixed. As a single traveler I felt welcomed, listened to and safe. I will most certainly take the long way round to stay there again.
It is a very nice and tastefully furnished hotel. The service is excellent and the staff very friendly and helpful. I can definitely recommend the Karoo Art Hotel.
We were pleasantly surprised with the hotel and its hospitable staff. They have a lovely restaurant on site and it serves as a perfect base to get to know the area better.
An absolute "hidden gem". We were dumbfounded!
Was just disappointed in our room. We felt really cramped in the green room. Room was really not pleasant for the price. Would have expected a more light and bigger room.
Dis 'n pragtige hotel met besondere dekor en atmosfeer. Ons het aandete en ontbyt daar geëet en dit was heerlik gewees!
Lovely old building with comfortable beds and quality bedding, a spotlessly clean private garden suite with friendly staff. Unfortunately no TV at all due to poor signal, a few errors at the restaurant when placing orders, and no outdoor showers as advertised. But a pleasant stay nonetheless.
A friend and I stayed there for one night on a motorcycle tour. Food is fantastic. Rooms neat and everything works. They could do with the cleanliness a bit - there was a lot of garden rubbish that was just left like that. In the corridor there were unused beds and lamps. Maybe they were busy with maintenance.
Clean, very friendly reception, delicious meals and interesting conversations with the chef. Would recommend them anytime! A wonderful stay!
Hotel's decor very beautiful, fantastic service and food.
Good hospitality, delicious food, nice garden to hang out in, cozy bar, clean rooms (one with a fantastic large veranda). Some of the artwork inside the hotel is not suitable for young eyes.
The staff were fantastic. Knowing about me since I got there and terribly concerned about me. The restaurant is amazing, not just the food, but the chef who kept coming to see if I was eating and chatting, but also the staff. It was amazing. I was upgraded to a bigger room by them which was an unexpected surprise. Rooms are large, tidy with all the necessary amenities.
I had a wonderful stay. In my opinion, the only problem is the liquor store across the street and the unsavory characters that hang around there.
Lovely hotel, friendly staff, fabulous food. Only issue was that the street noise from a bottle store over the road was very loud in the late afternoon, also room was hot so unable to close the windows and keep the noise out.
Baie lekker knus en gerieflik. Fantastiese vegetariese ete by die restaurant. Heerlike ontbyt.
Customer service was good. Breakfast was excellent but dinner prepared by head chef was extremely disappointing.
There was no hot water from 10:00 that night until the next morning. There was no decaf coffee at the restaurant. Luckily I bought it for the house in the morning. I can't believe there are still restaurants that don't buy decent decaf coffee. And I'm not talking about plastic coffee. I'm talking about decaf coffee grounds. What will make me recommend people to go is very friendly staff at the hotel, incredibly tasty food, the meat they serve is really tasty and it's clean with electric blankets on the beds. Then they should really look at the maintenance of the place and purchase decaf coffee grounds.
I understand that it is an old building and that is really part of the reason why we wanted to spend the night there. Unfortunately, our room's carpet was so dirty that one hated stepping on it. We walked with stockings on the whole time. The yellow leather sofa in our room was really so beautiful, unfortunately also so dirty that no one would want to sit on it. I have to give them full marks for the restaurant we had a great meal. I feel with a little effort the place could be a great experience.
Best customer service we've experienced in a long time. Everyone is so friendly and made us feel like old friends, even though it was our first time there. Breakfast was wonderful, delicious coffee and cosy atmosphere. We'd return again soon!
Very friendly welcome, helpful and delicious dinner and breakfast.
Friendly and helpful every moment of the day.
The hotel is very interesting and the various paintings on all the walls give it an amazing feeling. The staff were really friendly and looked after us very well. The only downside was that the room we booked was above the bar and in the room there was a page stuck on the wall saying that it would be a bit noisy until the last guests left the bar. It also states that the room is only rented subject to this condition and the guest accepts this condition. It didn't say this anywhere online, so we weren't aware of it when we booked the room. I would advise you to be a little more clear about this, please. Because we had a little trouble falling asleep on Saturday night.
No problem. It was very pleasant.
Will definitely stay there again. Staff went out of their way to be helpful whenever we requested something. Delicious, fresh breakfast.
The accommodation was excellent. The rooms blow your socks off and around every corner a new surprise awaits. The breakfast was delicious and the waiters really focus on the needs of the guests. It was an experience of a lifetime. Thank you.
Very friendly, nice, helpful staff. The hotel has an unique character and it is really something to see. We had a ryal South African meal.
It was an incredible experience. The décor, service and food was outstanding. Loved the atmosphere they created. Will definitely visit again.
Incredibly beautiful, good accommodation and tasty meals.
The hotel is very interesting and the dinner was very nice.
It was so peaceful and the room with its balcony was great. I enjoyed the food and can definitely recommend the creme brulee. Had a good night's sleep and enjoyed a cup of coffee on the balcony early in the morning.
Staff were very friendly and helpful. We immediately felt at home in this very interesting and colorful hotel. The room was great and we can confidently recommend this hotel.
I suffer from Celiacs and cannot consume gluten. The waiters were completely aware of my problem without me needing to inform them during meals. The chef made sure there was a great selection for me to eat from and treated me to a delicious chocolate dessert on our last night. I can recommend it for a couple or family. There is a lovely sitting room with a fireplace where we could relax and read a newspaper or a book.
Neat, clean and friendly service. Beautiful.
I recommend the Karoo Art Hotel to anyone for a romantic getaway!
It was so nice to stay at the hotel as the staff are well trained, friendly and helpful - nothing is too much trouble for them.
Very nice stay, great service and the food was delicious, thank you chefs, gained a whole kilo! The pool and gardens are a respite from the summer heat and there are interesting corners to discover everywhere.
Art, art, art and eat, eat, eat - just too good.
A wonderful 'trip down memory lane'! The restorations to the hotel have done very well.
It's comfortable rather than fancy. We stayed here before Christmas and then had Christmas dinner. The staff were very friendly and the art interesting.
The decor is very beautiful, especially for my wife who paints herself. The room was well equipped and tidy. The service was good and the dinner and exploits were very tasty. I have no hesitation in recommending the Karoo Art Hotel.
The dinner and breakfast were very nice. The people who work there are also very friendly and helpful. Our room was clean and comfortable with very comfortable beds and enough hot water for a nice shower. We also enjoyed the warm blankets in the cold.
At first glance I wondered if I had made the right decision to spend the night here, but that quickly changed. The room was very neat, clean and comfortable (all I would add in the rooms is a small fridge) otherwise there is everything you need for a very nice stay. The hotel's restaurant can also be definitely recommended, enjoyed a delicious dinner and breakfast with them.
The location is good, the staff friendly, linen was clean and the food was great - also enjoyed the entertainment on offer and the bar is great!
Hotel is neat and especially restaurant is interesting. Colors inside are bright and I enjoyed the decor. My wife's dinner was not particularly tasty.
