The property is managed and owned by Oubaas Strauss. Kleinplasie is a peaceful farm, about 3.5 hectares in size, and boasts a beautiful garden. Kleinplasie also includes braai facilities and a beautiful garden.
The Calvinia district forms part of the Great Karoo and is 400km Northwest of Cape Town on the Namibia route. This region is best known for the array of brightly spring wildflowers which come into bloom during August and September, otherwise known as the Namaqualand daisy season. The town of Calvinia has many attractions which include The Calvinia Museum, the historical building called The Boekhuis "Book House", The Akkerendam Nature Reserve as well as the famous Hantam Meat Festival which takes place in August each year.

153 guests' feedbackAfter a long drive, we were received by a friendly host and given a clean spacious unit to stay in.
Good value for money.
Very nice stay. It was worth it.
Very nice view of the Hantam mountains.
The place was very comfortable and clean and met all the necessary requirements. It is about 2 km outside the town which makes it very peaceful and cozy and you can enjoy the silence and farm life. We decided to stay an extra night.
Yes, very nice stay.
We slept well.
It was a lot of fun, just a shame it was a stop and go.
Perfect place if you need tranquility after a hard week of work.
All problem we had was that we couldn't even visit properly, because we had to visit in silence. We didn't even make music, but we were asked to speak more softly at a campfire while barbecuing.
Camping was pleasant for our one night sleepover.
Perfect for an overnight stop. The owner was very helpful.
Very neat and quiet.
Yes, had a lovely stay for one night, all that is needed there, and a peaceful farm atmosphere.
Comfortable stay with all the necessary amenities for our two-night stay. I especially really appreciated the decent barbecue area.
We had a very nice stay. Unfortunately only 1 night but will stay longer next time.
Nice braai area, quiet and peaceful environment.
Good sleep and friendly reception! Needs vary. We want more privacy, space and walking space.
The accommodation was acceptable. Do think the place and the garden should get more attention.
It was very good, thank you.
This venue had everything needed in working order, but it is tired and needing TLC. The pictures are accurate but do not show the worn condition of the furniture.
Lovely hot shower on a bitterly cold evening. The place needs some renovation. Signs of age are visible, including worn bed mats. The double bed blanket was not washed after a previous use.
The accommodation is very cramped, the bed is very old.
Why do you sleep over in Calvinia, because you come from far away and are on your way to a further destination, so the main reason is that you would like to get a good night's rest before you take on the long road again. Well, that's why we tried to spend the night there and here is our experience. In the first place, the owner didn't know about our reservation, but gave us the place where we could stand and that was the last we saw of him. When we laid our heads down after a long day, we first realized that the water pressure pump a few meters from our heads starts and then stops every few minutes, so you just pass out then you are woken up by the pressure pump starting just around reliving the process over and over again. At 00:30 we still hadn't slept and realized we weren't going to sleep at all and just packed up and drove to Upington where we got an hour's sleep in our car at a Total petrol station.
The unit is comfortable and necessities are available. The bathroom sink was clogged and the blankets needed a little rinsing.
Basic but clean and tidy.
Small place was cheap and ok for overnight, but it was pretty run down. Ceiling paint peeling off in shower, sofa outside is broken, cupboards in the kitchen have no doors.
It says bed & breakfast, however upon arrival and asking about breakfast we were told that they no longer serve breakfast. There were clothes stored in the cupboard and a lot of ants in the room.
The owners were very friendly, but the room stank of smoke. It wasn't very clean either.
On the old 1-5 star hotel rates, it would not get a star.
The reception was cordial. Place clean and tidy and nice and spacious. Provision was also made for load shedding. The view on the mountain was beautiful. Will use them again.
Great stay for 2 to 3 people. Centrally located to drive around the area.
Great overslept.
We were pleasantly surprised, everything we needed was there for a wonderful overnight stay.
Thank you very much! We had a great stay! Felt very at home! It looked like our house! Got a good night's rest after a long day's travel.
We were received with such hospitality by Oom Oubaas. Was kind enough to offer us a bigger stay, but we wanted to sleep in the Dam House. It is terribly cute and slept so nice and warm. The most beautiful view of the mountains and sunset. Will definitely use his services again. Oom Oubaas thank you very much for your kindness and we appreciate that you came to greet us in the morning before we left.
Definitely coming back.
We booked at the last minute. Everything was neat and met our expectations. Had a good time with our neighbors.
We are thankful for the rare downpour in late September that the arid area badly needs. This did cause us to plow through the Red Sea like Moses with our clean city car through a huge pool of water that filled the entire dirt road. We were grateful for parking under a shade net, a nice hot shower and that we could sleep warm and cuddly. The only thing that soured our stay a little is the distressing smell of old cigarette smoke in the Innie Kraal apartment - maybe it would be a good idea to put up clear NO SMOKING signs in the accommodation units.
We were a family of 10 family members who had to attend a funeral on Saturday. Although I myself took the wrong turn off the N7 and had to go through a nightmare journey of 117 km on the dirt road of hell and three passes with a normal Hyundai Grand i10, and consequently arrived there almost 3 hours later than expected, Old boss Strauss welcomes us with open arms. Luckily he stays on the premises! The chalets are spotless, have Dstv and are very comfortable. The garden makes you long for home. Beautiful! There were day campers, and they hung out until late without problems. Although one couple with a baby came to inform us at 10 o'clock on the Saturday night that they had a small baby and preferred silence! Not that we were exuberant! But we forgive and understand! (Uncle) Oubaas is a people person. He is happy to help and goes out of his way to make your stay as comfortable and pleasant as possible! We would have liked to stay longer, but the big Cape storm was on its way! A pleasant weekend indeed! And, compared to the other guesthouses we could only see in passing, one of the best. However, they may scrape, or wear out, the dirt road a little more often. That's a disadvantage.
Ian and Oom Oubaas welcomed us warmly. Place is neat and clean. Mountains lie before one like a painting. Farm atmosphere.
Our 4th visit. Every time we marvel at the beautiful garden in an otherwise barren landscape.
Attention can be paid a bit on the way from main road. But would definitely go again for the tranquility.
Owner was in hospital. Friends stepped in and served us well.
Ian and Oubaas received us kindly, braai was cleaned every morning and otherwise we were just nice and quiet.
There were only enough bags of coffee to use once and no tea bags.
We wanted something that was clean, safe and close to the highway so we could continue our trip north in the morning. The accommodation ticked all these boxes, thanks to Kleinplasie for looking after us.
On our way to Upington. Comfortable and neat.
Apart from poor administration by the website to keep information on the web page that dates from the past, namely "restaurant" and "coffee/tea garden", the rest was forgivable. We didn't want to go looking for a place to eat in town when we were expecting one on site. By the way, the information about the owners, Mr. and Mrs. Strauss, is wrong, because mrs. Strauss passed away some time ago.
Only a basic camping ground was required and Kleinplasie fulfilled that well. For the price we can recommend it to anyone.
Very nice stay, will stay there again. Good location and Oubaas is a very nice and helpful owner.
The place is value for money.
Cottage had a very roomy lounge with a comfy couch and armchairs and fireplace. Long verandah outside with various seating areas overlooking a pleasant garden. Kitchen large with indoor dining area as well as outside. Bedroom also roomy with a comfortable bed.
The accommodation we had is a complete one bedroom cottage with living room, kitchen, dining room, porch and small garden. Although it is an old house, it is well equipped with chest freezer, large fridge, stove, oven and microwave. It has a peaceful atmosphere and a nice braai area outside. It is not completely private and there are no things to do like walking as the farm is fenced, but it is ideal for just an overnight stay on your way to your destination or if you are doing business in Calvinia.
On the website it is claimed that the capacity of Kleinplasie is 331 (!) persons, and that all accommodation is full for the rest of the year. However, when we wanted to book, it turned out that accommodation was available. On enquiry, we were told that guest house owners themselves are responsible for the content on the website. We were kindly received at approximately 15:00 on 12/1/2023, but told that our unit was still being cleaned. This despite the fact that we could have checked in from 12:00 onwards. Then we were allocated the Inniedam rondavel as accommodation, although we were booked for Unit 2 or 4. Inniedam was so-so clean! Not dirty, but so-so! The dishes and kitchen appliances were really kept to an absolute minimum. No insecticide was available for the many flies and mosquitoes, coming from the nearby farm animal camps. No pond to swim in, as advertised, was there. Safety, such as a locking car gate, window bars, decent door locks are non-existent. (Hopefully this is not necessary in the countryside either!). We are not going to blame Kleinplasie for the long power outages due to Eskom's load shedding, which caused the air conditioner, in the bloody heat, as well as the TV, to not work. However, the noise from the house's generator was troublesome during those times, and made one jealously wonder why that power is not also available for the guests? As for value for money: for someone who would be happy with a very, very basic stay, this can be recommended. But we note that Kleinplasie has raised the fees as follows for 2023: camping from R200 to R400 (that's a 100% increase) and accommodation in the rooms from R650 to R1000 (53%)! These are extraordinary increases, which make it no longer value for money accommodation at all. You get better, and more affordable accommodation on Calvinia itself, especially where Kleinplasie is located about 3 km outside the town. So, unfortunately, a lot of things need to improve on Kleinplasie, before it can be recommended. Hopefully, the newly appointed lady on Kleinplasie can bring about big changes in terms of the accommodation, so that the accommodation can meet preferred partner values.
Lovely welcoming owner but a room with wet spots on the floor and a lingering smell as you entered. Disappointed in website as we booked a newly built unit which definitely was not the case. Spiders and scorpions in the room at night extremely unsafe for a child. Spider webs in the all lamps. A bathroom door that does not close. Loadshedding for 4 hours without an aircon in scorching temperatures and not being able to leave the door open made it incredibly uncomfortable. Not as advertised.
Mountain view, tranquility and silence did wonders for our spirit. Very nice stay and Calvinia is a beautiful town with the most delicious places to eat.
Cute chalets and setting are very beautiful in nature.
We had a lovely stopover on our way to the coast. Our host was friendly and helpful, and accommodating of the kids and our cats we were traveling with. The kids loved all the animals, and the stars are beautiful. Would definitely recommend, and return for another visit.
See stars.
Thank you for hospitality, very neat facilities and all the extras that are part of the package. We have already recommended this place to friends.
Problems with Vodacom and Cell C.
Delicious, affordable accommodation.
Our go-to stayover in Calvinia.
Friendly reception and helpful attention from the owner create a relaxed and peaceful experience of sufficient and tidy facilities.
Neat and safe. Peaceful Karoo environment.
Everything we needed was there.
After a week of good urban accommodation this one was disappointing. A tame fridge without ice or water, sink without a plug, no wine glasses, no regular tea or biscuits and walls that are starting to peel off everywhere. The old leopard skin on the sofa is inappropriate and a rooster does not belong in any guest house.
Will spend the night there again anytime, very quiet, neat and clean very friendly people.
Extremely peaceful place to sleep. Was our second time. Great stay. Thank you Kleinplasie.
Was on a business trip and the accommodation was great.
A great place to rest after a long day on the road. Comfortable and quiet.
The view of the mountains was a bonus. Was able to find everything we needed such as a black pot and wood. Excellent and friendly service.
Spacious and well equipped.
Kleinplasie is perfectly located with a lovely view of the mountains. I really liked how the owners developed the facility with privacy for each unit. Our unit was ideally laid out and we really enjoyed the chats with Oubaas. We pray that the environment will receive very good rains and that the drought will be broken soon.
Very hospitable.
Place is clean and the people friendly.
Welcomed from the gate to the office by family and animals.
Good overnight accommodation for caravans or motorhomes. Only the mosquitoes were a bad problem.
Despite the drought, the garden is beautifully green with beautiful potted plants etc.
While it offered nothing particularly special, Kleinplasie was perfectly sufficient for our stay while looking at the flowers.
It's so nice to wake up to all the farm animals noises.
Safe place about 2 km from Calvinia. Helpful hostess.
Cannot complain as everything was adequate but it was very small and not very welcoming.
There are quite a few units that are not on top of each other, nice Karoo feeling.
Overall not bad, needs some personal attention.
Indication of location of Kleinplasie with booking could improve. Friendly reception with options given by host. Neat and clean unit with good facilities and equipment for self care unit. Bathroom cramped, but everything in good working order. Great bed and bedding. Caravan unfortunately parks tight against unit which was sometimes a nuisance with noise. Thanks for a nice overnight stay!

We booked for two couples and paid a deposit for two units. This was also confirmed by the website. When we arrived we were shown only one unit and when I mentioned that we had booked two units, the owner initially denied this, but later admitted that they were wrong. After two days we had to move to a small one-room room. Shower faucets need to be repaired. Unit could not be cleaned properly due to shortage of basic things like brooms. Noise from dogs and unnecessary traffic from owners and other guests. Needs a lot of improvement before I can recommend it.
Guests in the room next door were making noise, honking cars and playing loud music. Shower doesn't work well. Will not visit them again. Can't believe this is your partner of choice. I contacted another guest house and went to sleep there.
We came for a few days to get away from the busy city. We could not have found a better place. The scenery was beautiful, the hosts and neighbours were friendly, and our kids (both young and old) enjoyed their time. Thank you especially to the host's kids who played so nicely with our baby. A brief note to ask about water availability if you are wanting to swim in the dam. We visited in summer and it was dried up due to drought.
We had a great time for a night, the scenery was breathtaking. The place is well furnished and the air conditioning was lovely. The braai facilities were very good.
We arrived late and were received very kindly. All our requests were met.
We only spent 1 night there, staying in 1 of the self catering units. What is nice about the place is that there is a safe place to spend the night with a caravan or roof tent, with good ablution facilities.
Everything we needed to rest well before we had to travel on to our destination the next day. Friendly reception, and my little boy could see the sheep, bunnies and peacocks on the farm!
Only issue was that their was only one tea bag for both my wife and I for the evening and next morning, otherwise it was all good.
Surprisingly pleasant. Air-conditioned unit, nice, rural ambience with internet and outside braai and picnic table. Friendly folk, comfy beds, clean and trouble free night.
We only stayed one night. More than enough for us. It was very cold with snow on the Hantamberge. The morning was frozen. Until the car doors couldn't open. Water pipes also frozen.
Quiet, rural. Place to walk. At least mosquitoes with voices like peacocks are kept away by "peaceful sleep", but not stopped.
Value for your money as self-catering accommodation. Advertisement misleading. There are no meals. A bit inconvenient out of town after a long journey and also back to town before leaving the next day.
Window in bathroom may be of fluted glass and not just plain pane. You can't keep the blinds closed all day.
The outside environment of the facilities is not very attractive. Serves as an overnight facility only.
Comfortable overnight accommodation, quiet and neat. Could definitely recommend Kleinplasie as an overnight stay.
Kleinplasie is a neat, safe and well-located place just outside Calvinia. Oubaas and Sanette were very friendly and took good care of us. The persistent drought in the area makes everything dull in the area, Kleinplasie is an oasis in the desert. We had a good time.
Very beautiful and peaceful. Recommends.
Peaceful and quiet. Nice room. Will be back.
After an exhausting trip we had a good rest at Kleinplasie Guest House. Only that the dirt road is bad for a car, otherwise good service and clean room.
Lovely little farm with the peacocks checking me out through the windows.
Vriendelike ontvangs, ervaar rustigheid na die lang pad, die tuin is 'n oase.
Somewhere on the web read there is a restaurant and tea garden, but there was not. Very basic, mattress was not very comfortable and lots of mosquitoes!
Unfortunately, we did not make use of Kleinplasie Guest House, because we decided to drive through and spend the night in Lambertsbaai. However, I will definitely use them next time.
We had a very nice stay. Was nice to have a small stove with plates and oven and a microwave oven. Nice and quiet. We will definitely stay here again!
It's like beautiful, cozy family nest. Beautiful old charms everywhere, a cozy garden with twists and turns and warm, hospitable people. The breakfast was 5-star, a huge, fragrant plate of home-baked bread and delicious home-made jam! I definitely recommend this accommodation.
Very nice stay, hospitable. Gravel road just very poor due to rain and previous guests smoked in the chalet. It was an unpleasant smell, but it was very peaceful.
The units are each very private and our unit was very comfortable, clean and tidy with a lovely view of the Hantamberge.
Very nice and comfortable accommodation with delicious meals on request. Very friendly and helpful hostess. Excellent value for money.
Ideal overnight accommodation, would've wanted to stay longer. Will definitely stay there again and recommend it.
We had a nice stay and there was everything we needed. Nice warm sleep.
The reception was warm and friendly, which makes one feel at home immediately and all the farm atmosphere and tranquility offer soul enslavement for us city dwellers away from the hustle and bustle of the city.
We have visited Kleinplasie before and, as we loved it first time, decided to stay there again. We loved the garden and surroundings, the quiet and comfort that Kleinplasie offers.
What a treat it was to sleep comfortably and peacefully. It was nice to wake up in the morning with birds singing and 2 owls sitting and "chatting". I recommend Kleinplasie for those who live in the city. It is the ideal stopover on the way to Cape Town. We were warmly received and immediately felt at home.
It was neat and clean, friendly reception. The shower lacks a door, water splashes on the floor. Towels can be replaced. Can recommend place.
Friendly and helpful reception and would definitely like to stay there again.
The accommodation was acceptable. We have two teenagers and two twenty year old children, the 3 sleeping in one room was a bit problematic, the toilet door doesn't close very well. We also looked forward to breakfast, but there were no meals. Not even crackers in the room? Otherwise, the rooms were neat and the bed slept well. The reception was friendly and warm and indications excellent!
See rating.
Oubaas guided us through the farm and garden. Accommodation was very comfortable.
We were very happy with our accommodation. It was hot, but was lovely to have air-conditioning. Received a warm welcome from our hostess. Loved the peacocks!
We only stayed one night, it was very neat and clean with everything you need. Value for money.
Great accommodation just outside town in a peaceful area where you can just relax. Our house was neat and well equipped.
Our needs were met and the breakfast was excellent.
Wonderful stay-over at the small farm which provided adequate camping facilities and clean ablutions. Very friendly owners and the farm environment with the animals nearby made it a great experience.
The owner was so friendly and made us feel welcome. The accommodation was neat and well equipped.
We enjoyed a lovely night's rest, and the view is breathtaking.
It was a very nice and clean room and bedding.
Only 1 night overnight on our journey from Upington to Cape Town. We were well received by the hostess. The accommodation is neat and comfortable and thoroughly equipped, with a good view of the Hantamberge. We enjoyed it with the peacocks and the little goat that wandered around the site.
What an experience to see Leipoldt's Hantam Mountains and Hantam District at last. The aroma and quiet of the Tankwa Karoo veld and the delicious mutton sausages that the farmer and his wife served with colourful jams for breakfast were wonderful. The farmer, Oubaas Strauss, took me on a tour and told me how he built the guest units himself from old sheep-pens and horse and cattle stables, which I thought were beautifully and neatly done. The peacocks, sheep and goats were also delicious, I mean the mutton sausages! The peacocks and windmills were soul refreshing to look at. The bed was made up with winter sheets and thick blankets, so I could sleep warmly and deeply beneath the millions of stars of the faraway Hantam Mountains.
I can recommend the accommodation, it's near the N9 and easy to find.
Very nice on a sweltering hot day.
Quaint little place! Reminded me of my childhood ...
Will definitely book again. Clean, tidy ablution facilities.
We found the guesthouse easily with GPS and there were a lot of signs along the road too. The owners are friendly and check-in was quick and easy. The room was basic, but functional, but there was no sugar or powdered milk in case you wanted to make tea. The bed's mattress was a bit old and uncomfortable, but it didn't keep me awake. Thank you to the owners for their hospitality, I will stay here again.
We have enjoyed our stay at Kleinplasie. Thank you to the owners.
Good value for money. Will definitely use you again.
Clean, tidy and beautifully put together. The steak was off the books and Karoo hospitality was the order of the day! We will definitely stay with you again on the upcoming holiday in December 2015. Thank you very much for allowing our 2 malteses.
Nice atmosphere and original and interesting garden layout. Private, quiet and very good value for money.
Had a restful night's rest and a pleasant breakfast.
This accommodation is situated just outside of Calvinia and proved to be quiet, with no passing traffic to disturb the tranquility. Amenities were adequate, clean and safe.
