122 guests' feedbackWe thoroughly enjoyed the quietness of the area.
We received kindly. House comfortable and very neat, clean. Delicious large indoor barbecue. And the most delicious home-baked rusks were a treat. So much to do in the area and hiking trails. Beautiful part of our country.
Pierre and Therese were absolutely lovely hosts! The Jan Dissel cottage was perfect for us (2 adults, 3 children: 17, 15, 11), very clean and just the ideal set-up with our own little garden surrounded by pristine nature and views. The private swimming hole was amazing and hiking in the area is a wonderful experience (even if the tracks are not always easy to find). The best part was the peace and quiet (no internet, no devices). 4 days later and our batteries were recharged. Thank you!
Great experience. Thank you for allowing us to experience the place and surroundings. Lovely stay, ideal place also to serve as a base for further exploration, at Flower Routes, West Coast, etc.
Comfortable accommodation and well equipped. Beautiful area and hospitable owners.
Very friendly welcome. Absolutely fantastic time. Peaceful, quiet and so beautiful between mountains.
Best of all, there is no internet or cell phone reception. No one bothers. Cottages are neat and value for money.
Delicious! Blissful getaway between the picture-perfect Cedar Mountains.
Wonderful break away in a comfortable cottage. Hosts were welcoming and helpful.
Nice switch off!
Neat accommodation. Nice and quiet on the farm.
We had a very relaxing and refreshing stay at Krakadouw Cottages. The hosts were extremely friendly and informative. The location of the cottage is fantastic - very close to a small river where one can cool off after a hot day. The views of the Cederberg mountains are great, and there are some lovely hikes. But it can get hot in summer, so take lots of water.
Lovely fresh air and mountain water. Wonderful hospitable people. For all three of us being tall and elderly, everything except the kitchen cupboards was a bit low. It includes everything. The chairs in the living room, the beds and especially the toilet. But the splendor of the surroundings caused us to manage. However, I would recommend that the bed and chairs could perhaps be mounted on wooden blocks to make them higher. The toilet remains a bit of a problem.
Very nice stay. If you can't live without cell phone or WiFi, this is not for you. Here you can switch off.
We stayed peacefully among the mountains. The stay at Krakadouw Cottages was very suitable for 5 people for 2 nights' stay. The house is very clean and tidy with everything one needs. The children had a great time frolicking in the swimming hole (even building sand castles), the water is beautifully clean and clear. One can have a nice walk on the farm road. We could also visit Wupperthal from here. Very nice people could tell us a lot about the area and the roads in the area. Can recommend Krakadouw for accommodation in the Cedar Mountains.
We had a wonderful stay, cottage was just what we needed.
Our stay with you was wonderful. The farm has a beautiful location and beautiful view!
We had a wonderful stay.
Lovely beautiful place. TV and WiFi would be an added bonus, especially on days when the weather doesn't allow you to go outside.
The unit stank of fireplace smoke. Very little to no hot water. When reported, the owner did not believe us, so a second night with minimal warm water as well ─ a definite problem with the geyser thermostat.
If you want to experience silence, tranquility, the brightness of stars and the beauty of nature in a safe and earthy environment, then Krakadouw Cottages is for you. We had a wonderful stay in the place.
The Cederberg will always have a place in my heart. Krakadouw is quiet and peaceful and good for the soul. Always nice to stay there. Our reception is always friendly and sincere and would recommend if you are a nature lover.
It was very nice and quiet, tidy and everything we needed to relax a bit on our tour to Cape Town.
Idyllic location in a stunning area.
Very nice. Central to the Cedar Mountains.
The place exceeded my expectations. It was relaxing and such a beautiful setting. Would definitely be booking again.

We stayed 4 nights in the Meulhuis next to the stream and it was lovely. The nature and silence on this citrus farm in the north Cedar Mountains is special. We walked, read by the fireplace on the rainy day and explored the surroundings and flowers during the sunny weather. The characterful house is neat and clean, with everything you need. The provision for load shedding is convenient and we were spoiled with plenty of fresh oranges. Krakadouw Cottages is highly recommended - we'll be back soon!
The cottage is comfortably furnished and there was everything we needed for a comfortable stay. The surroundings are breathtaking and the full character of the cottage contributed to a special experience. Many thanks to the owners and your kind hospitality.
See stars.
For load shedding they gave us battery lights and a gas stove which worked very well. Everything was very clean and we immediately felt at home. The surroundings are beautiful and the silence is wonderful.
Jan Diessel cottage was in a fabulous location, right on the river - essential for the December heat! A simple, comfortable and well-stocked cottage in a gorgeous location, the lack of signal really helped us to unwind. The owners were very friendly and helpful and suggested the wonderful Sevilla Rock art trail, which we did. We also loved watching the resident gecko catching bugs on loadshedding nights. My only suggestion would be to fetch the rubbish once every two days or so, as it started to smell in the heat.
We loved that there is no TV, radio or Wi-Fi. If this is not what you want, then don't go there. Highly recommend the kerrieboontjies. The best we have ever tasted, so make use of the honesty bottle.
We had a nice stay.
Friendly and effective communication throughout. Ideal, peaceful and quiet place to stay after a lot of driving around during the day to look at flowers. Fireplace (and good dry wood available on the farm a bonus for the cold evenings). Not luxurious but neat, clean and well equipped - exactly what we expected.
Old mill house with lots of character. WiFi at farmhouse, not at cottage.
We stayed in Frikkie's house and it's a bit cramped for four adults. Older people will not be able to go up or down the stairs with comfort. Otherwise it is very neat and clean with everything you need. The fireplace was a bonus.
The house surprised us. It's so private and the scenery is indescribable. And there is everything you need to spend a quiet time in nature. The stream of water that flows past the house further adds to the peaceful atmosphere. We especially enjoyed the outdoor barbecue and fire place.
Very nice house between the mountains, clean and tidy. Unfortunately there is no mobile phone signal or WiFi. This can be a problem if a call needs to be made or received in an emergency.
Time for new mattresses. Otherwise comfortable.
I can only recommend Krakadouw to people who love the mountains and hiking. Beautiful rivers that run through the farm.
We will definitely visit again - the swimming hole next to the cottage is fantastic.
Sheep create a wonderful atmosphere and were ideal for our city grandson - the newborn lamb brought him so much joy. Felt absolutely safe. Enjoyed the weekend very much. Everything we needed was there - well equipped cottage.
A piece of heaven. Stayed in Meulhuis next to the river. Loved every minute. Will return gladly if possible.
Although very secluded it was as the saying goes "don't judge a book by its cover". Everything we needed and a nice indoor barbecue too.
Cottages are very well spaced apart. Each cottage has its own beauty. Excellent setting.
Don't let the humble appearance of the Mill House fool you! When the front door is pushed open, the visitor gets a pleasant surprise: the Meulhuis is homely and comfortable, modernly furnished. Everything we needed was there. The bonus was the dark, star-studded nights that forced Marius, the photographer, to get up at three in the morning and immortalize the Milky Way. Thank you, Pierre, Krakadouw Cottages is one of our many pleasant memories on our "sloor-tour" through the Northern Cape and a bit of the Western Cape.
Throw your cell phone/computer/"tablet" in your bag because there is no signal - a yes for those of us who want to go off the "grid" for a weekend or longer. Surrounded by mountains, the Mill House wins by far with privacy, and the plus, you are next to the river and hear the lapping water every day. We discovered a swimming hole, although the water was cold we still ventured to swim a few lengths. So many treasures to discover, but only if you are willing to walk and look for them, otherwise you will miss out.
Had a quiet and pleasant stay. Only two suggestions - lights to accommodate loadshedding even though I had my own, and the other minor one is to change where the hook for door is to make access to fridge easier. Otherwise a perfect little place.
It is very peaceful and quiet there and everything you need is in the cottage. Very nice place to stay.
Quiet in nature. Starry sky at night and pleasant and friendly people.
We enjoyed our visit very much. My boys couldn't stop swimming in the beautiful pool and river. They snorkeled and the fish gave them a lot of pleasure, so much so that they almost had to be convinced to do something else. It really feels like you are in another, exotic world there by the water. We had a great time ourselves and the lack of WiFi at the unit didn't bother us at all. Most modern facilities are there at the unit. Therese is a graceful and very interesting hostess and I was very surprised to see that Body Stress Release is offered on the farm. How fantastic to come across something like this at Clanwilliam! We would like to visit there again and hopefully our children will want to drag themselves out of the water to go for a walk on the farm!
Krakadouw Cottages is conveniently close to Clanwilliam for a quick drive into town if you need anything and at the same time it is far enough away to have no mobile phone reception. The lack of TV and WiFi is part of the bush experience. The host and hostess are very hospitable and always willing to help if something is missing.
We stayed at Jan Dissel - real farmlike, no-nonsense cottage. The garden, if compared to the other available cottages, could need some tender loving care and the way to the waterhole will soon be totally grown and hardly accessible. Beautiful surrounding!
If you want piece and enjoy nature around you these cottages are just the trick.
If you're wanting to get away from the rat race, this the perfect getaway.
The house is very neatly and comfortably furnished. The area is very peaceful and has very nice views of the mountains and the river is very nice for swimming.
Meulhuis is really a nice and nice place for a weekend break.
There's no cell phone reception at the cottages, but we were warned that there wasnt any.
Neat and characterful, clean place to stay. Simple, yet tasteful and functional. Meulhuisie is next to a mountain stream which further contributes to tranquility. Indoor braai is very welcome on cold days.
Beautiful surroundings in the mountains, lovely walks and very peaceful.
A simple, fully equipped, clean cottage with beautiful mountain views. Enjoyed every peaceful moment!
It was a great stay. We recommend going during the flower season. The only suggestion we have is that the first batch of wood could be made available at the cottage, inclusive of the price. All further wood could be bought.
Really enjoyed the weekend. Very peaceful and tasteful accommodation.
Quiet, safe and beautiful stay. Great place to relax and spend time in nature.
See stars.
Wonderful trip to the Cederberg. Stunning time of year. Meulhuis a charming cottage on a bubbling mill stream. Pierre very hospitable and communicative. Fresh oranges! Wonderful braai. Small comment - lots of us used to a bigger bed ensuring a peaceful night! Thank you Pierre.
Owners were very friendly, town close for groceries and nice roads for biking and walking! Will definitely go again!
Old-world accommodation with the ripples of the Jan Dissels River at the foot of majestic mountains is the perfect getaway to nourish the body, soul and spirit in the freedom of nature!
Owner friendly and helpful. Pool a winner in the heat. Highly recommended. Would definitely stay there again. Everything in and around the house is very neat and clean. Nothing negative to report.
The tranquility and beauty of nature is incredibly nice. Rest and peace for the soul. Away from the city noise. We will definitely go back to Krakadouw Cottages again.
Wonderful place to relax in nature and silence.
The pleasant scent of orange blossom was a plus. Neat, with the secluded quiet we were looking for. Extremely suitable for two people. Would have preferred that our vehicle had a canopy.
Stayed there for three nights at the end of August 2021. Unpretentious but clean and tidy. To recommend.
Too little hot water. Swimming pools are overgrown. No information or direction indicators about the walking routes.
If you get tired of life in the city, then this is a place to stop and recharge your batteries.
It's always difficult to go to a place for the first time, because you don't know what to expect. We've walked a few blues before. This place exceeded our wildest expectations. The tranquility, the private swimming hole, the picturesque location, we will definitely visit again and again! The friendliness and hospitality with which you are received naturally makes it a hundred times better! We felt right at home. Thank you so much for the perfect getaway. We'll see you again soon.
Peaceful atmosphere and quiet nights.
See stars.
The accommodation is basic but very comfortable. It is close to the start of many beautiful hiking trails in the mountains. The owners are very friendly.
Two nights of bliss before returning home after 2 week trip into the Karoo. Beautiful cottage and location against the Cedar Mountains.
We sought a short weekend away to see the last of the flowers and were not disappointed.
We stayed in Frikkies Cottages. The website information is somewhat misleading. The 3rd bedroom was not available. The main bedroom was spacious, but loft uncomfortable. The kitchen and fireplace area is very small and cramped, so not a cosy place to relax in.
Garden chairs on the porch are still the old wire chair sets that made me long for my grandfather, but certainly not the easy chairs with cushions that I would have preferred to be able to sit back on the porch and enjoy the view or read. Kitchen has everything you need, we just feel the braai area needs more light and could perhaps be located closer to the house. The dirt road to the farm is quite bad, but the beautiful picture of the white house with its beautiful gazebo-covered porch and the mountain in the background made up for it.
I didn't look at my watch once. The silence and surroundings sucked me in and I felt as fresh and excited as a child again.
What a lovely place to relax and get away from the mad rush! Beautiful scenery with the babbling stream close to the cottage. The hiking trails are incredibly beautiful. We will definitely return!
We had a wonderful stay - all basic amenities were provided, nature is beautiful!
The house was clean. We had everything we needed. Very friendly welcome from the owner and the friendly dog. We had a great stay and got given the information about the hiking routes.
Cederberg mountains, dam and flowers good draw card for Clanwilliam. Owners of cottage could open the river next to cottage for a better view as it was overgrown with bushes.
Krakadouw's Meulhuis is a little piece of heaven! Most beautiful surroundings and beautiful view from the stoep. The house is very well equipped and the kitchen has everything you need! There is a braai area inside the living room - which is wonderfully cozy especially in winter cold! Very good value for money. We will definitely be back!
Quiet, very clean and tidy, surroundings awesome. The silence and beauty.
We had an amazing stay with wonderful hosts! The place was safe peaceful and extremely tranquil. I would recommend Krakadouw Cottages (Die Meulhuis) for a couple breakaway any day. No Cellphone reception, no distractions. We loved the nature side of it. The long walks and the amazing sunsets.
From the moment you turn off your car upon your arrival at Krakadouw, you are aware of the grandeur of the Northern Cedar Mountains around you. Top it off with the character of the historic but comfortable cottages and the genuine friendliness of the Louws, and a three-day stay is enough to put you to deep rest. This time it was nice to be able to watch the farm activities in Frikkie's house. Next time we might choose the seclusion of the Mill House. Each has its own charm.
Loved the feeling of being away from it all.
We enjoyed staying at the cottage, it just need the windows cleaned and maybe a hook to hang your dishtowel on next to the sink. Having hot water straight away is a big plus. Would definitely come back again and there is so friendly.
After a drive on a dirt road that gets narrower and bumpier, you arrive at a beautiful corner that looks like it belongs in another era, as if the rest of the country doesn't exist. We stayed in Frikkie's House. For two nights, in the authentic little house, we felt like we were the first inhabitants of this beautiful corner. Pierre and Therese (and their dog) received us very kindly. There is no cell phone signal here and I wouldn't have it any other way. Here you can really get away from everything.
Frikkie's house is a cozy unit that has everything visitors could need. The scenery is very beautiful and peaceful. The owners of the farm were very helpful and even provided us with a pot on request, which worked really well for our chicken pot on the last night! There are quite a few hiking trails to walk, just keep an eye out for the paths as some of them are already overgrown. Cape Nature has to maintain the routes and it is not always done so well. We suggest downloading a map before visiting the farm (there is no signal) so that the routes are available when people are walking. But otherwise we had a very nice stay.
Frikkie's house is very neat, clean and has everything you could possibly need to make your stay comfortable. We were received very kindly on a very cold Sunday afternoon. Theresa and Pierre were so friendly and even turned on the heater for us in the cottage. The farm atmosphere is indescribably fantastic. That which is the highlight of my days to see the cubs come out for the morning and watch them again this afternoon when it's bedtime for them. Here I will be able to stay forever! The fireplace in the kitchen ensured that we were always nice and warm. The fact that there is no cell phone reception is a real blessing! You never feel unsafe or afraid and when someone passes by (which is almost never) they greet you kindly. One can go for a lovely walk without any worries. The nature on the farm is unspoiled and breathtakingly beautiful. We had a great time every evening sitting and playing cards or just talking. The beds are wonderfully comfortable and the linen of good quality. We will definitely stay here again. Would love to go in the summer as the river sounds so tempting. I can imagine that the swimming holes will be a big attraction in the summer. Theresa and Pierre are wonderful hosts - they never bother but are always available. And Ben is the most beautiful dog ever! You will see us again.
Very clean. Beautiful environment. Friendly people. They will see me again.
A lovely cottage. Great to have a hike on the doorstep. Although access to the river wasn't possible, we went and sat on the flat rocks and sand near the river every evening. Driving over to Biedouw Valley for the flowers was spectacular. The Sevilla Rock Art trail was excellent, such a great thing for our 5 and 7 year olds to do. They were so excited to find each cave and paintings, and us parents loved the walk and paintings too.
A simple farmhouse with a cement floor porch over which a gazebo grows, with mountains in the front yard and mountains in the back yard and down the path, a beautiful swimming hole in a refreshing mountain river. The cottage has everything you need. We went for a walk early in the morning - there are many beautiful walking routes that can keep you busy - and spent the rest of the day sitting on the porch reading and only when the warmth was chasing us, walking the 100 steps to the swimming hole to cool off . Best of all - there is no one else around you. You have the places all to yourself. It was a blissful 3 days and it's one of those places to which you will be able to return again and again.
Very cute places, well equipped, well located, very hospitable, would recommend it for sure.
Very nice stay, basically with everything you need. Near swimming hole in the river. Beautiful mountain views. Best of all, no WiFi.
It was a lovely, relaxing experience in a very beautiful setting. The cottage was adequate. It might be nice to have an indoor braai as it is very cold outside in the winter. There were more than enough blankets and a heater and the kitchen was well equipped.
A little gem in the mountains, with a bubbling brook. Lovely little cottage with all the conveniences. Really getting away from it all with no cell phone signal - just peace and quiet, and not too far from Clanwilliam.
We were completely satisfied with our stay and next time, weather permitting, will make full use of the walking path to Heuningvlei. We were also pleasantly surprised when we discovered the cameras of the Leopard Trust in the gorge.
The note on the coffee table summed up our stay nicely "there is no WiFi here, so talk to each other". The facilities are simple and space in the kitchen (hanging area around the fireplace) is limited, but we had everything we needed for our 3 days in the mountains. We could relax and walk and read and talk.
Lovely weekend getaway with a relaxing atmosphere. Mosquitos are a factor, so pack your Peaceful Sleep.
Simple, clean and loads of quietness. A groaning and creaking bed, an uncomfortable mattress and the smell of wafting sewage from the outside septic tank spoilt the weekend. We gave the same feedback to the owners.
It was a very easy trip to the destination, but there is a bit of dirt road, so take into account in terms of transportation. I booked the Mill House, and thoroughly enjoyed my own fire pit and swimming hole! Everything was spotless and 100% equipped with everything you could need. Even the grape arbor over the porch helped to help with the worst of the heat. I met the hostess and host both on the way out, and honestly could only give the best feedback about my stay over 3 nights.
My husband and I wanted to spend a weekend in Clanwilliam and also attend the annual Clanwilliam Liggiefees, and easily found accommodation at Krakadouw Cottages. It was affordable and looked like the perfect place to rest. We were looked after by Pierre and Therese from the start, and were even warned of road closures at the weekend due to a race through town, and were able to check in earlier for our own convenience. The cottage is simple, but beautiful, with everything one would need. We got more than we expected from a self-catering unit and were delighted with how quiet and peaceful it was there. We were left in peace and no one came to bother us, so we could lie down or read a book without disturbance at any time of the day. No one is allowed to play loud music or make noise or race around with motorbikes, so we really appreciated it! We may also have explored the farm a bit - you can walk anywhere. Just watch out for snakes and baboons, we saw a few of these, but fortunately not near the cottage itself. There is also a leopard or two on the slopes of the mountain, but unfortunately we didn't see them - it's wonderful to be surrounded by nature like that! I just wouldn't recommend children walking anywhere alone early in the morning or at sunset. Otherwise, it's incredibly safe. There are lots of mountain tortoises, so be careful on the dirt road to the farm - we had to get a few of them out of the way to move on - but they are too precious and so special. Also come in a vehicle that can handle a dirt road. It's bushveld, so be prepared for a bug or two. My husband and I are both afraid of spiders and we had to get a big gentleman out of the house the other night with lots of laughter and hysteria! It's safe enough to sleep with the windows open, but the cottage is right next to the river so any light attracts gnats and mosquitoes - just close the windows before it gets dark. There is no signal on the farm, so if you want to get away from technology this is the ideal place. There is a signal in town if you just want to check messages and e-mails. One morning we drove out to Traveller's Rest (37km out on the Pakhuis Pass) to do the 2km Sevilla Rock Art Trail - a leaflet is available in the cottage itself. Just make sure to take enough water, a hat, sunscreen, salves for bug bites and a snack. There is also a restaurant there and definitely worth the effort! We really enjoyed our weekend and will definitely go back!! We strongly recommend it for married couples and for families where children know how to keep themselves busy outside. There are no TVs or play areas, just Cederberg woodland, and it's heaven on earth.
Krakadouw is a refreshing treat, away from cellphone reception and the rush of everyday life! Go for a walk amongst the orange orchards or discover the natural surprises along hiking trails between the Krakadouw peaks surrounded by the Cedar mountains. Jan Dissel's house was clean and equipped to make the stay comfortable. The sound of the Jan Dissel River provided background music while sitting on the patio. Remember to bring cash to buy some of the lovely marmelade from the farm.
Would have just like some oven cloths where the sharp knives are, like the chef's knives. Otherwise very nice.
We had a fantastic time away. The cottage was well situated for us as a family - private and away from the rest of the farm. We loved our time there.
Such a peaceful, breathtaking location. The mill house was picturesque with the mountains as a background and the orange groves that surround it. Was able to swim in the cold river. Uncle Pierre's wood burns too well!
We had a nice stay. The view from Die Meulhuisie was beautiful. A hideaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. No reception, no TV, just what you need to recharge. Remember a book and a pack of cards. That's how we spent the cold evenings next to the fireplace. The perfect place to hike up the mountains and look at the flowers. In the early mornings we sat on the patio and drank coffee while listening to the small waterfall. Die Meulhuis is about 100 years old, very well restored and it has everything you will need. Thank you for the hospitality, we could not get enough of the beautiful farm. You'll see us again soon.
Lovely place for walks and experiencing wildlife. Cottages are convenient and well-equipped. Clanwilliam is just close enough for rugby and shopping.
We enjoyed it and will always recommend our friends and family to visit Krakadouw. It really is an unique farm in the Cederberg area with lots of space and if you are a country lover. So much more to offer.
It's a bit rugged, can do with a more modern upgrade. Apart from that, it was actually nice and quiet to be so close to nature and listen to the river running over the rocks.
Thank you very much Pierre and Terese for the wonderful 2 nights with you. We will definitely make a visit again and simply bring comfortable walking shoes to better explore the area.
The house was well equipped and the braai area has a view of the nearby Cederberg Mountains, and you can hear the whisper of the river in the background. Walking trails next to the river and to a waterfall in the mountain, but the trails need some maintenance - here and there difficult to follow.
Very peaceful, calm and amazing area. The nights are as quiet as the night, sometimes frighteningly so. Will definitely stay there again for food for the soul.
