There are limited self-catering facilities are available and traditional Karoo meals are served on request.

131 guests' feedbackI have wanted to stay at the Lord Carnarvon for a long time and am glad that I was finally able to get to that part of the country. The house where we stayed has National Historic Landmark status. Stylish restoration that combines comfort and luxury with respect for the house's history. Nice light, beautiful antique furniture, quality linen, well appointed kitchen. Excellent restaurant (mutton neck recommended), delicious breakfast in another building (the officers' menage), but within walking distance of each other.
Everything was perfect. We really enjoyed dinner at the accommodation. The food was delicious.
What a gorgeous guesthouse in a gorgeous town. First time for me in Carnarvon, and I can most certainly recommend the guesthouse as your first choice. The dining experience at the restaurant was lovely. Great service, great food, and generous portions. I walked to the restaurant from the guesthouse but was given a lift back by the owner/manager of the guesthouse because he didn't want me to walk back in the dark. Such a gentleman. I can most certainly recommend this guesthouse and the restaurant.
I was there for work, and on a pretty tight schedule. Our host was very gracious and did all they could to help us.
Third stay at this venue, the best place to stay on the way through the Karoo.
We booked 2 studio units and were happily surprised to be given 2 fully furnished and equipped cottages. The furnishings and decor of the cottages were unbelievable, many compliments to the guy who is busy with renovations all over town. We had dinner in Lords Kitchen, food and service very good. One thing that we do criticise was the breakfasts for which we were charged R150 pp. There was a nice bowl of yogurt, muesli & fruit. The cooked food was pretty bad - all the eggs were overcooked, in fact it looked as though the breakfast had been made hours earlier and left to congeal.
Beautiful place, lovely bed and quality bedding. Very well equipped - hanging or storage space in bathroom recommended and maybe a mirror in the room.
Good, clean, comfortable.
Interesting historical place. Very clean, tidy, comfortable and well equipped. The small container of milk and biscuit with the coffee is a plus. Beautiful decor and we slept well on good king size bed in the studio unit. Dinner at the restaurant was outstanding! We didn't have breakfast. A bottle of cold water for each guest in the fridge is something you can consider.
Magazine nice decor, my wife raved about it! Great service and pampering food at the restaurant.
As per the invitation and a part of history.
Our rooms were outside the main house and beautiful, clean and with all the necessary overnight facilities. We will definitely stop here again.
Accommodation has a nice, historical theme. Everything was very neat, clean and comfortable. Secure parking.
Buildings nicely restored.
Very neat and clean and comfortable. The only hindrance is that there is no breakfast served by the guest house, and because it is a small town without franchises, there is also nowhere else to eat breakfast (and the room also does not have facilities to make your own breakfast not). So just bring your own breakfast like morning porridge or something with you if you want to eat before you drive.
Dinner was very average. The lamb chops were tough and the mutton livers very hard.
Interesting rooms, we had to change the first one due to faulty A/C. The rooms are very unique, and we enjoyed our stay in them. We ordered lamb shanks at the restaurant. It was tough and undercooked, with vegetables overcooked and sickly sweet, and the accompanying gravy was excessively thick. I would not recommend this restaurant; there are others with better reviews.
I don't see our host being able to save, but I hope I'm wrong.
Nice meal at Lord's Kitchen. Friendly and helpful service.
Nice stay except that our air conditioner didn't work!
We embarked on our journey to Carnarvon with great excitement and were not at all disappointed. Accommodation was fantastic and we had a lovely meal at Lords.
Good service, good staff, good facilities and good food!
It is truly an oasis for a weary traveller. The antique furniture etc. brings longing to your youth days. The staff went out of their way to help us. Unfortunately, due to time, we could not have breakfast. We ate at the hotel that night, part of a guest house. Met Pieter and his father and had a lovely chat. Dinner useful, food of high quality. Thanks to Pieter and staff.
We recently spent the night in Lord Carnarvon Guesthouse. We were in the back part. Room large with neat furniture. The living room is full of antique furniture. Open plan kitchen with essentials for overnight stays. We enjoyed breakfast in the front house. Delicious food, too much and we took the muffins with us as road food. The indoor parking space was enough for 2 vans with camper vans. We enjoyed dinner about 2 blocks away at the Lord Carnarvon Small Hotel.
Elegant guest house, with a very historic atmosphere. Beautifully furnished, perfectly clean and tidy, with lots of memorabilia about the heritage of the house and the town.
Phantasmagoric. A must when you are tired. Good sleepover.
Pieter is a lovely host. Everything one needs is available. If you stay there you should definitely eat at Lords a kitchen. Best lamb pie and ribs in a beautiful setting.
Little gem in the heart of the Karoo!
Everything down to crockery testifies to expensive taste. An asset to the town for sure. We also had a very nice meal in the Lord Carnarvon Kitchen. A must for any traveler in that area. When I compare reality with photos I am always disappointed. Here it was the other way around. The reality was even more beautiful than the photos.
Friendly staff and a very nice restaurant. Lamb neck was top notch.
Extremely neat unit. The room has high quality linen, the kitchenette is well equipped, and there is also a braai area and patio. The dinner was top notch. What a fund in this small town - really recommend!
Beautiful place with excellent hospitality!
The accommodation takes one back to the lifestyle of the wealthy people of the past.
This is a beautiful guesthouse in the Karoo. The overall facilities were great. Delicious breakfast served. Our host Pieter was friendly and helpful.
The guest house exceeded all our expectations. Transported back to a time long ago. Absolutely worth seeing and revisiting.
We really enjoyed the one night stay after a hot day's drive through the Karoo. The room is spacious, well furnished, clean and a pleasure to stay in.
Nice comfortable room. Bathroom could do with an update. E.g. no place to put clothes etc. to put down and no mirror above the sink.
Neat and peaceful, second time staying and would recommend.
Neat and comfortable rooms. Restaurant has delicious food and breakfast is special. Staff as very hospitable.
We stayed in the self-catering part of the hotel. It was compact but well equipped and tidy with everything we needed. We also used their breakfast and were impressed with the restaurant's Victorian decor as well as the good value breakfast.
We were five married couples who stayed in the back house. Everything was of high quality.
Slept well. Bed and bedding fresh and clean. Bathroom a bit cramped with shower, sink and toilet all in one. Food at restaurant very nice. Nice relaxation areas outside.
Host could not do enough to make our stay as pleasant as possible. Delicious breakfasts, neatly served in crockery that matches each morning's food color palette.
You wouldn't say the place is what you get at first sight! Very modern place to stay in a small historic town. Well equipped! Easy check-in and check-out. Good restaurant also for delicious dinner. Will recommend.
Stylish. Lots of character. Tidy.
Slept well. Restful. Clean.
The old buildings are beautifully restored and full of antique pieces. However, it offers modern accommodation with friendly people. We will book there again!
Most beautiful place in town. Enjoy a delicious dinner at the restaurant. Very neat place and friendly people.
Adjacent to great restaurants. Also has full kitchen with outside braai area.
Five star accommodation. Neat and well equipped. Breakfast is an experience.
Best sheep's tails as only Pieter can do.
Owner has restaurant where guests can enjoy dinner. Was tasty! Breakfast is served in the guest house - was also nice. Room has a lot of space with TV and small fridge, as well as kettle. Bed slept great.
Als is nice and neat.
Always a pleasure to stay at Pieters place. The decor and antiques an added bonus.
Recommend that shelves and hooks be installed in the shower and bathrooms.
We had an unforgettable stay. The staff were all very friendly and professional. The rooms were very clean and tidy and beautiful decor. Dinner was incredibly nice and very tasty. Will definitely stay here again. Many thanks to all the staff and Pieter.
The room we had was beautiful, clean and tidy, it took you back to the past. The dinner was delicious with real Karoo food and hospitality.
Love die plek. Pieter doen baie moeite. Plek is netjies. Sal aanbeveel vir almal.
Very clean, tidy, well furnished, air conditioning that works!! There is even mosquito repellent. Friendly service. Good meal with nice atmosphere! Well done see you again!
Very nice and tasteful accommodation, Pieter and Rebecca are very friendly and really made us feel at home.
Second time staying here clean good, good halfway to West Coast from Bloemfontein.
I recommend Lord Carnarvon Guest House without hesitation and extremely strongly: The 5 star accommodation's spacious apartment is spotless, comfortable with the most beautiful antique furniture etc creating a cozy homely atmosphere. Lovely bed, nice bathroom, fully equipped kitchen and parking right in front of the door. Could hang out in the courtyard until late and then to the stylish bar and dining room with the exquisite antique furniture and wall decorations. It is clear that the owner and management prioritize the guests' needs - a truly fantastic experience!
We were very welcomed. The house is very stylishly furnished. The breakfast was delicious and very spacious. All this came at a fair price.
We thoroughly enjoyed our few days in Carnarvon. Pieter and his staff went out of their way to make our stay pleasant. Facilities were excellent. Would love to go back again.
Would recommend anyone to stay there.
Thank you very much, we had a great stay and you make the best pizzas for sure.
It is very nice and neat and the people are very hospitable will definitely recommend it.
The host was very friendly and helpful, waitresses well trained and food was excellent! The self-catering unit is very clean and well decorated!
The decor is beautiful and you feel special when you enter the house. The recommended restaurant (the same owner) was just a stone's throw away and was worth it through and through. Everything considered, it was a surprising experience.
I loved every moment of my stay at the Lord Carnarvon Guesthouse. The building and tasteful decor are steeped in a deeply valued heritage and historical remnants of a bygone era. The entire house was spotless and very comfortable and the hosts very welcoming and helpful.
See rating.
Our overnight stay was very pleasant. Just a shame the town has fallen into such disrepair. The guest house stands out like a jewel in a crown.
Uitstekende, gerieflike verblyf. Dankie.
Strict water restrictions due to drought, and a very noisy environment (perhaps because it was the day after new year) soured our visit somewhat. We left at 03:00 in the morning because we couldn't sleep due to the noise and the prospect of a toilet that wouldn't flush and a shower without water ended the last night of our vacation on a very low note.
Good accommodation, very nice and helpful hosts. Wonderful and stylish restaurant with really good food and very friendly service. You would not think that a restaurant like this is located in such a little town. Smashing! It's a must! I regret that I only booked for one night.
Historic building in front of a beautiful church building that shows up nicely in the night light.
Pieter is the best host ever.
The guest house is beautifully furnished and all the staff were very friendly and helpful. We had a great time.
It was a special stay for us that we will not soon forget. Our kind host went to great lengths to make us feel at home and safe.
Lord Carnarvon Guesthouse has exceeded our expectations, despite the water crisis and restrictions for which special provision has been made to avoid any inconvenience. What a stylish charming place! The people were friendly and the meal in their restaurant was excellent. We traveled with a baby and they were so helpful with special foods.
We have stayed here before and we have never been disappointed. The cottages are beautifully restored and furnished, the breakfast is delicious and then the dinner in Lord's is also to be recommended. Thanks Peter!
I did not expect this from a small Karoo town that I never heard of before. Very well done!
Pieter and his team are a great asset to the lovely village! Lord Carnarvon Guesthouse is more than just a rest stop for many people who venture the long way! Thank you for your contribution to South Africa's tourism.
Host was very friendly and made us feel at home. Beautiful guest house with very nice antique furniture. Breakfast was from a book. Did not take the dinner at the Lords Kitchen, the area where it is located is the street parking which did not look very safe, but did have dinner at Mams Restaurant at the gas station where there was a wait. It's a shame that the town is going backwards.
We were very happy with the stay. The unit was clean, nicely furnished and reasonably priced. Parking is secure behind a locking gate, and the rooms are well equipped for the cold winters. Their Lords Restaurant two streets away has a good selection of food and drink that is excellently prepared. Service is friendly and good. I will turn there again.
Great night's rest. Nice guest house. Gift and friendly service. The Lord's Kitchen is nearby for meals and the food is delicious and tasty.
A clean comfortable stay. A home full of history and furniture and pictures from old South Africa.
If you love history and antique furniture you should not miss this guest house. This is the largest collection of antique furniture, each piece carefully selected, that we have found in a guest house in a long time. The owner Pieter Hoffman went out of his way to make our stay pleasant. Because it was on the 1st of January, we were worried that all eateries would be closed. However, we were able to enjoy a delicious meal at Pieter's restaurant Lord's Kitchen. The breakfast the next morning was phenomenal, a great variety and beautifully presented. Thank you Pieter for sharing the beauty with us.
Very good option to spend the night in such a small town. The service was excellent. Dinner and breakfast at the Lord's Kitchen were some of the best. Many thanks Pieter and staff.
Pieter the owner was very friendly and helpful. We would definitely stay there again and recommend Lord Carnarvon to other people.
So neat and clean with nostalgic decor. The restaurant, also managed by Pieter, served great dinner with excellent service by the staff.
There are big rooms and they all have the same price.
To find something like this in the "middle of nowhere" is fabulous. Great place for a stopover and for even a longer stay.
Pieter made us feel absolutely at home. Enjoyed a delicious dinner in the guest house's restaurant and breakfast was off the books. Will use the guest house again.
Room in main house was good but we were only people in that part. One does not feel safe at all! Also concerned about room and car break-in. Concern about safety in streets. There is no water in town and is limited to two periods a day. Then also have to turn on the pressure pump. At R900 a night, one wants to be safer and have water. Lord's Kitchen Restaurant did not impress at all. You won't go hungry there, but you won't eat well. Overpriced for what you get and where the places are. Nose over for the place really. Instead, choose a town and a nice place in it.
It's a beautiful place. Amazing old beautiful furniture. Great service with a delicious breakfast.
Would definitely recommend! Value for money and neat and clean.
We were a group of 9 staying at Lord Carnarvon, also enjoyed all our meals at the Lords Restaurant. Pieter and his pleasant staff went out of their way to make our stay special. They were more than willing to accommodate us with all our arrangements on our visit to Meerkat. Pieter's guest house is beautiful, their breakfast amazing. I can recommend it to any traveler.
Traditional and so nostalgic.
Pieter is a very good host and his restaurant is awesome.
We were given a warm welcome by Pieter who took the time to show us around and explained how the keys and access worked. We had a delicious meal at the restaurant and were most comfortable in a lovely room in the main house which was beautifully decorated and had a rich history, explained by Pieter. Only one small issue were the hard and rather uncomfortable pillows which did detract from an otherwise comfortable room and overall excellent experience including a great breakfast, served at the time we requested.
Excellent accommodation. Thanks.
Nice, clean, neat and modern. Delicious dinner and delicious breakfast! Friendly service and helpful! Will go again tomorrow without a doubt!
Beautiful house full of culture. Wonderful Karoo feeling. Had a lovely meal at The Lord Kitchen that evening. Go ahead and try the lamb shank. Also had a fantastic breakfast at the guesthouse. Thanks for the hospitality.
Lord Carnarvon Guesthouse is where we spend the night when we drive back home from the Cape. The reception is always friendly. The room neat and their breakfast delicious!
They made a lot of changes to the guesthouse since our last visit two years ago. The few additions to the restaurant and additional rooms is a sign that the owner is aiming for growth and improvement.
Pieter has created an oasis in Carnavon with his guest house and restaurant. Highly recommend.
The most beautiful place and perfect service, delicious breakfast. Thanks.
Very friendly service and good accommodation. Mattress may have been 'n bit too soft.
The guest house is filled with wonderful antique furniture and it gives a special atmosphere. Breakfast was nice and there is an opportunity to have dinner at the owner's restaurant where the food was very nice. The staff are friendly and helpful.
It was really worth the money and is definitely recommended!
Very nice visit. Pieter and his staff are focused on service. Lovely breakfast. Unfortunately a noisy area at night with stray dogs who keep barking.
The unit we stayed in was very comfortable and well equipped. We were warmly received and the restaurant where we visited that evening (and which belongs to the same owner) is definitely worth the visit. The takeaway breakfast was also a bonus that we didn't expect.
Beautiful room. Nice beds and all amenities. Quiet. Easy to find. The Lord's Kitchen was also an experience, tried lamb pizza for the first time.
The service and hospitality was excellent. The food was delicious. The rooms were neat and had good facilities, the TV especially was a good idea.
Pieter received us kindly. Our room was clean and very comfortable. Lots of attention to fine detail. Breakfast was outstanding.
So nice after a long journey to spend the night in a clean and tidy room. Will definitely stay there again.
Lord Carnarvon is a gewel in the dull Karoo and is definitely worth the trip. The building is more than 100 years old and is beautifully renovated, and the interior is stylishly decorated with furniture from decades ago. You cannot take your eyes of it. This must have taken months of hard word and it would be stupid to miss it.
We really were not expecting too much when we booked, but what a surprise. The accommodation is outstanding in every way. We stayed in the main hotel but there are rooms in a delightful Victorian house close by. This is where breakfast is served in the most amazing dining room overflowing with antiques. A very professional setup overseen by owner Peter who does everything possible to make your stay memorable. A must stay in Carnarvon and have recommended to friends already.
Had a great stay and the place is very neat and clean. Also ate deliciously at the Lord's Kitchen.
Friendly and helpful host and lovely accommodation with fresh bedding!
Very cute guest house, excellent service and neat rooms. The guesthouse's restaurant down the street is also highly recommended. Carnarvon is an ideal overnight stop on an alternative route on your way to your Cape holiday.
I would recommend it to anyone anytime. Ate nice mutton tails at the same owner's restaurant.
You're never sure what to expect, but I can really recommend Lord Carnarvon. I initially booked just for one night as a stopover on the way to Cape Town, but I enjoyed this little place so much that I'm already planning a longer visit. The service is very good and the rooms really neat and clean. The people of the town have a great time, so make sure you visit "Lord's Kitchen" and the "Blikkies Bar". Cell phone reception within the town usually works, but can be intermittent. No mobile phone reception for long distances before and after the town - and in the Karoo between towns in general.
Personal service, character of hotel and good restaurant are to be recommended.
We were kindly received and could conveniently have a barbecue in the evening. Breakfast was delicious in an old world guest house. The host could have been a bit friendlier.
Pieter gave us a warm welcome and we ate incredibly well with dinner and breakfast. The guest house itself is tastefully decorated with just enough to stir your nostalgia but still make you feel comfortable and at home. We would definitely recommend it.
Would recommend Lord Carnarvon Guest House anytime.
On our way from the Western Cape (desert flowers) to Gauteng we decided to take the R27-R63-R386 to Prieska to experience the real silent Karoo in the North Cape. Carnarvon was the logical overnight stop and we selected the Lord Carnarvon House as the best option to stay overnight. The rooms are located in the enclosed yard providing a quiet basic outfitted room and convenient parking.
