Accommodation is offered in 3 self-catering units, namely the Rondawel, the Chalet and the Garden Unit and are all fully self-catering. The units are positioned between 25 and 50 meters apart for privacy and have their own kitchen facilities, and braai facilities. Each unit has wonderful views of the surrounding mountains. Guests are offered complimentary Wi-Fi.
If the venue is booked as a whole, the Lapa can be used to host small functions. In addition we have 3 small campsites which are close to the pool and lapa. These 3 campsites accommodate a maximum of 12 guests and are only available for group bookings and on application to the Mafube Mountain Retreat Management. Ablution facilities consist of 2 showers, 2 toilets and 2 basins.
Guests have access to the swimming pool and the communal Lapa containing a TV with full DStv channels and a table tennis table. Please note that due to a reception problem in the mountains, TV is not available in the units, only in the Lapa.
There is a lot to do here for both adults and children. We have genuine dinosaur footprints on one of the wonderful hiking trails, a dam with a canoe, a trampoline, a swimming pool and swings near the chalets and a special Plantation Playground about 800 meters from the chalets where there are special swings, climbing frames in the trees and a very popular safe zip-line for children under 40 kg in weight.
Other activities in the area include fishing and bird watching. In winter most of our visitors do a day trip into Lesotho to the ski resort of Afriski, to try out a bit of skiing or snowboarding. The town of Clarens, offering a variety of restaurants and shops, is located less than 30 minutes away.

Everything at Mafube is comfortable and very tidy. The hiking trails are also well marked. Was really very nice.
We recently spent a peaceful weekend at Mafube Mountain Retreat and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The accommodation was clean, quiet, and incredibly comfortable, providing a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle. The serene mountain surroundings made it an ideal place to unwind. While the road leading to the retreat was a bit of a challenge, it added to the sense of adventure and seclusion. The mountain hiking trail was also a great challenge. Overall, it was a lovely stay, and I would highly recommend it to anyone looking for a tranquil getaway.
Great location, very close to the border and perfect for a day trip to Afriski. The unit itself was very clean, very comfortable, and Hillary was super nice. The highlight is the dino footprints, absolutely amazing.
Very nice stay. Hiking trails were fantastic!
Mafube Mountain Resort is a nice getaway place, with good hiking trails that have very good directions. There are nice play areas for the children and the Rondawel remains fun. We rested very well. Will definitely go again.
Really enjoyed the Dinosaur walking trails as well as the plantation playground with zip line.
Mafube is surrounded by beautiful scenery. The owners are friendly and very hospitable. The chalet was well equipped, neat and clean. Would definitely recommend staying at the Mafube Mountain Retreat.
We loved this quiet gem. A 2-km fairly bumpy dirt road leads you to a wonderfully secluded accommodation area. Only 3 units means very few other people to interrupt your quiet stay. The mountains are spectacular, beautiful hikes, great birding, dinosaur footprints amazing, friendly hosts and wonderfully peaceful. We stayed a week and had not yet exhausted everything there was to do in the area. We would definitely recommend this place for a holiday, especially if you like quiet beauty.
We had a lovely weekend. Everything was as advertised and the scenery was exceptional! The hostess was very pleasant and responded quickly where needed. Would definitely recommend for peace and quiet from the hustle and bustle.
Very nice area and resort. Road not recommended for small cars.
Recommend it for people who just want to rest and clear their head and also love walking and nature.
The place is not fancy but it's clean and well-located, the owners are welcoming and they check and update you every morning. It's home far away from home. I'll definitely visit again for some hiking and mountain viewing.
Enjoyed a wonderful 2 days. Beautiful accommodation and very friendly host and hostess. Hiking trails are exceptional and well maintained. We would love to stay there again.
Mafube Mountain Retreat was an exceptional getaway. A beautiful place with a beautiful view of the beautiful mountains on your doorstep. There are a variety of hiking trails to choose from. My children especially enjoyed the trails to the dinosaur footprints and the waterfall. We often walked to the Plantation Playground where the children enjoyed themselves. Seeing that there are not many accommodation units, it makes for a nice and peaceful environment where one can fully enjoy the beauty of nature, while listening to the sounds of nature and admiring the sky in the evenings while there is a nice campfire burning. 3 days was way too short, we wish we could have stayed another day or 2. Will definitely return. Hillary and her husband were very helpful and were always ready if you needed help or information. Felt very safe.
If you love nature, Mafube is for you!
A warm welcome, with everything you might need. Will definitely miss the weekend and the 2 cutest wofkids.
Peaceful retreat with lovely walks or hikes. The unit was well equipped. Great hosts.
Was a very nice stay and pleasant stay and Tebello made it very nice and is very good with customers and is really accommodating and friendly and very helpful. One of the ladies there is not a very nice person and is very not good with clients and people aren't going to come back because of her, she even rushes people to leave her camp telling them they are supposed to be gone by now, what kind of treatment is that?
Absolutely loved our stay, the accommodation was lovely and so peaceful and Hiliary made it extremely comfortable and accommodating.
Really enjoyed our stay, made very comfortable. We loved the break away.
Mufube is beautiful. The view over the mountain range is incredibly beautiful. The rondavel has everything one needs to have a wonderful break. Hillary and her husband were fantastic hosts.
Unfortunately due to rain we unable to visit dinosaur foot prints close by. We however experience three seasonal waterfalls flowing. Stunning! Our hosts Chris and Robert were wonderful!
Feel free to visit and forget about the hustle and bustle of the city!
Hillary and Chris always went out of their way to ensure that everything went smoothly, and to make our stay as comfortable as possible. We will definitely visit them again.
The peace and quiet was food for the soul, as was the view and hiking trails. Miss the 2 dogs who went for a walk with us. Had a great time and will definitely go again.
Beautiful, well-marked hiking trails.
Very beautiful farm. Lots of things to do. Lovely in nature. Will definitely go there again.
The most beautiful beautiful! We enjoyed it so much. We will definitely go there again. My kids were over the moon when they got to do the Dinowalk - An absolute must!
A must for head cleaning.
It's a really nice place if you want to discover all the footpaths. The owner is a pleasant and friendly hostess. Would recommend anytime.
Very nice place in the mountains and lots to do for children and parents.
Lovely guest farm with a beautiful view and lovely hiking trails! Big and small will enjoy it!
Very nice view, neat accommodation, there was a barbecue area, will definitely go again.
It was amazing and the managers and staff where friendly, I liked the mountain view hike and dinosaur prints, it was worth it. I loved it.
Views from the accommodation are beautiful, place is neat and clean, towels could be softer. Otherwise, everything is good.
You can't get any closer to the mountains and nature. The surroundings are picturesque and hiking trails with incredible views. The dirt road is a bit difficult for a normal car, would recommend an SUV or pickup truck. The cottage has everything you need, as you want to spend more time outside than inside. Friendly hostess who really makes an effort to make your stay as pleasant as possible. They went to repair a section of the dirt road after we struggled to get to the farm. If you just want to find yourself and breathe, this is the place for you.
Beautiful views, peaceful surroundings, close to many attractions. Nice hiking trails.
This was our second time there and would do so again. The nature and view of the mountains is fantastic, but the donga has its own charm.
There are beautiful hiking trails that I really enjoyed. For those who love nature, Mafube offers an ideal getaway opportunity.
It was very relaxing. If you want to get away from the city and just get back to nature, this is the place for you. Everyone in our family really enjoyed it.
The cottages have beautiful views. The dino tracks are amazing and a must see! Very friendly and helpful owners. We will definitely visit Mafube again.
We had a great time staying in the rondavel at Mafube. The surroundings are beautiful and it's close to Fouriesburg for any necessary purchases, restaurants etc. We enjoyed the short walks. Nice place to take pictures.
The best aspect of the Contemporary Chalet at Mafube Mountain Retreat is for sure the lovely veranda with a breathtaking view. Here you can quietly enjoy your morning coffee while watching the birds or barbecue in the evenings while staring at the stars with a glass of wine. Hillary stopped by regularly to make sure everything was ok and is a very good source of information if you are looking for advice on things to do or the best routes to take. It was very easy for us to reach Lesotho, Clarens and other attractions from the farm, but if you don't feel like driving a lot, I would recommend the dinosaur footprints and other hiking trails on the farm itself. As three women, safety was never an issue either. Thank you Hillary, we had a wonderful stay.
Excellent location with mountains all around you, privacy, very friendly hosts, really a great place.
We had a great stay and Hillary and Chris were very hospitable and made sure everything was OK. It is an incredibly beautiful environment and there is a lot to do on the farm. It is also close enough to Clarens that we could easily go into town. We will go back again for sure.
Was a very peaceful weekend with incredible views. The hiking trails are also very nice and the unit has a nice fireplace for the cold winter nights. Was great!
Thank you for a wonderful weekend, Hillary. We'll see you soon again.
Second time there, and we're already planning the next one!
Great weekend in nature, lots to see and do. Kids really enjoyed it, even swam (May month!) We will definitely go back!
Really enjoyed the tranquility and scenery. Nothing more than that needed. Hospitality of owners also much appreciated.
Friendly welcome, very tidy and enjoyed the pool, DStv and Dinosaur Footprints.
Thanks to Hilary for welcoming us so kindly and making us feel at home. Rest for the soul among the mountains and beautiful scenery. Been there before and can only recommend the place to stay.
We had a great time. Hillary is very kind and has a good heart. We went for a walk, wanted to take the dinosaur walking route, but decided to do the east face as well, which later coincides with the dinosaur route. It was a tough route and then we forgot our water! The walk was an adventure for me. It's not for sissies, but the view is beautiful from up there. Just take water with you. The zipline was great fun for the kids and the bass in the pond is massive.
Mafube is surrounded by beautiful mountains but the road there is a bit bad. The owners are hospitable. The accommodation itself is very basic and the braai is not at home. There is no wardrobe or place in the bathroom to put anything down, only cement floors. A fireplace would be nice.
Safe and central!
It was a very pleasant, nice weekend with good, friendly service. Was very satisfied, everything one needs. Location is good, delicious and beautiful between the mountains. Nice and safe hiking trails with wonderful views of the mountains and surroundings!
I can definitely recommend Mafube Mountain Retreat. I have a busy 5 year old boy and he thoroughly enjoyed himself. The hiking trails were fantastic with so many surprises at every turn, that my little boy didn't even once complain that he was tired. He scrambled and explored around every rock and bend. We're not really even the outdoorsy types - but for the weekend we definitely were. There is a play area for the kiddies with a really cool trick slide - which was one of my boy's absolute highlights. That and the dinosaur footprints! In the evening we had a delicious barbecue and chatted with each other! Playing cards and games with my boy - of course it helped that there was no TV in the cottage. The owners are friendly and very familiar with their place. I would definitely recommend it to everyone. Especially moms with boys!
Hillary was a very pleasant hostess. The farm atmosphere house was comfortable to stay in and the atmosphere relaxing. Everything in the house was clean and tidy.
Good location, everything you need for self-catering, lovely walking routes. Road to retreat a bit challenging for sedan cars. Staff (Robert) very helpful.
We had a wonderful long weekend with the children and their grandparents at Mafube Mountain Retreat. The view and hiking trails on the farm are unique and the chalet is beautiful and comfortable. Cleaning services were excellent with daily dishwashing included. The zipline was a hit with the kids (<40kg). There are few units that emphasize the tranquility. The farm is close enough to Clarens and Golden Gate Highlands National Park that we could walk there daily. Hillary and Chris were interested hosts who came every day to see if everything was going well. We are grateful that they share their beautiful farm with our vacationers. Would definitely recommend the experience.
It was a lovely break. Everything was neat and everyone was helpful. Lovely relaxing place to rest.
The environment is beautiful. The people are hospitable. The puppies provide entertainment. The walk is difficult, but absolutely worth it.
Nice walking routes in a very photogenic area. Enough to keep photography enthusiast busy for a long time. Unfortunately the rain interfered with our plans. but there will be a follow-up visit.
We had a lovely stay. The staff helped us and was very friendly. It is a beautiful place with views of the mountains in all directions. We only did the waterfall trail which was very nice and worthwhile. The braai area of the large contemporary chalet could be a little better equipped to keep the cold out. It has a quite rough dirt road, which should only be tackled with a bakkie preferably.
Most beautiful environment. Hospitable people.
Hillary en haar man is wonderlike gashere. Die uitsig is beeldskoon, ons sal beslis weer kom!
We were 3 adults and 3 kids, 6 years and younger. Our plan was to drive somewhere else everyday, but we ended up doing so much at Mafube that we just stayed there. There was especially a lot to do for the kids, from wallking trails to a plantation playground with a zipline. It was so nice to spend 5 days there without watching TV. Hillary made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived and was an excellent hostess.
The most beautiful view was worth every cent. The owners made us feel so welcome and the hiking trails were breathtaking.
Had a lovely breakaway with the family at this very relaxed location. Would recommend it.
We had a fantastic 4 days at Mafube Mountain Retreat. The hosts, Chris and Hillary, made us feel like family. From the warm welcome when we arrived to the sincere goodbye when we left. The farm is situated in the most breathtaking spot, surrounded by mountains. All our needs were catered for. Accommodation was clean and neat. It was only the first of many more visits to Mafube Mountain Retreat.
This is a wonderful place where you really get to rest. The owners are wonderful and friendly. They always make sure that everything is right. It is in a beautiful location and truly value for money.
It is a very beautiful place if you love nature and walking in the mountains. Very calm and quiet.
Very dry, but Chris and Hillary can't help it.
