The pet-friendly home contains most of the historical features and consists of 4 bedrooms, 1 bathroom and a guest toilet. Each of the four bedrooms has been themed and consists of a children’s themed room with 2 single beds, a "Gentleman's" room with a king size bed, a "ladies" boudoir with a king bed and a single bed and the main bedroom with a king bed. All beds can be converted into twin beds. There are extra mattresses for children, so more than nine people can be accommodated. Each bed is fitted with luxury bedding and an electric blanket. There is 1 bathroom fitted with a separate bath, shower and toilet, a separate toilet, and a shower room; soft bath sheets are supplied as well as shower gel, facial wipes, hand lotion and liquid hand soap. Complimentary cookies or rusks in the kitchen.
The home has a large farm-style kitchen that contains a gas stove and electric oven, a dishwasher, a fridge-freezer, and a microwave. Off the kitchen and entering into the dining room, is a fully functional 5-plate Union 7 coal stove, as well as a wood-burning fireplace in the lounge. These features, coupled with underfloor heating in the kitchen, dining room and bathroom, ensure a warm and cosy stay in chilly weather. Firewood, firelighters, briquettes and matches are provided.
The dining area leads out onto a patio, which has braai facilities for guests to use and lovely views to admire. Alternatively, guests can sit on the covered semi-wrap-around veranda at the front of the house and braai there either on the weber or the gas braai. Off-street parking is available.
While there is no Wifi in the house yet, guests are welcome to use the host's Wifi in a relaxing garden where there are tables and chairs and access to electrical points. Umbrellas are provided.
Guests are welcome to bring their dogs as long as they are socialised. There is plenty of land for them to run and play.
As most restaurants are closed during the middle of the week, the host has a range of affordable frozen homemade meals available, as well as braai meat. Bikers don't need to bring food! The menu is sent out a couple of days prior to arrival.

40 guests' feedbackLovely house full of antiques. Definitely special and something to experience, especially if you like history! The place is also pet-friendly, and the three resident dogs came to say hello wagging their tails. Terribly beautiful environment. We also got breakfast muffins complimentary with biscuits, tea and coffee. Appreciated it very much. Can definitely recommend Mahem House!
Wonderful place to stay with family and friends. Pet friendly and massive yard for them to enjoy with the other dogs on the property. Owner is very friendly and helpful. Will definitely visit again.
Mahem House is well located accommodation with a nice view over the wetland. The house is very nicely restored and has everything you need. Would definitely recommend.
Lovely clean accommodation.
Mahem is a beautiful house full of history. The house has everything one needs for a wonderful stay.
Mahem was excellent. Everything just worked. From the detail of wood by the fireplace, to the quality of the bedding. Even underfloor heating. Excellent place.
Our stay was great. The host was a fantastic with great communication. The house is old but has great character. Even though we were there in winter, the house was warm and firewood was provided for our first night. Each room also has an electric blanket, and the showers were fantastic - hot and with great pressure! Walking distance to the restaurants and little shops. I would stay here again when visiting Wakkerstroom.
We had a great stay at Mahem House, the house with all the antiques felt like we were sleeping in a museum. Everything testifies to good taste and comfort. The bedding was very nice and warm and cuddly. The view was also very nice.
What an enjoyable place! We and the four-legged children thoroughly enjoyed Mahem House. It's a house full of authentic character - because the owners understand how to restore with the right furniture and to carefully do the additions, which ensure the comfort of the house and preserve the character. So there is a coal stove and fireplace and good underfloor heating. The kitchen is excellently equipped with the dishwasher definitely a winner. The rooms are also tastefully decorated with comfortable beds and bedding. The electric blankets and feather duvets ensure that we could sleep comfortably. Then there is the lovely, well-tended garden with the fantastic view. It's so peaceful and the bird life is exceptional. Like honey for a weary soul. And it feels so safe there. A very helpful idea is the list of things to do and places to eat. But for city dwellers - be warned: it's a small, quiet town where people can still be people at a leisurely pace, so the shops close early! But luckily at least there is excellent WiFi! This is certainly not my last visit to Mahem House!
Very nice stay. Nice place.
Mahem stands for Magnificent, Ancient, Historic, Unique and Beautiful. More than enough of everything makes staying for a group comfortable. The ready meals are tasty. We had a nice time.
Thanks for a wonderful weekend. The accommodation was excellent with an incredibly beautiful view. Will definitely visit again.
Very well equipped with detail items to make it easy for guests and an exquisite environment inside and outside the house.
We were on a birding trip from Johannesburg. The house is in a perfect position overlooking the vlei. Walking distance to bird hides, bakery, hotel, cosy pub and restaurant, visitors' information. Accommodation was very comfortable with lots of space for a group. Lovely to have a fireplace and warm duvets for the cold nights. The kitchen was well equipped for a large group. We all enjoyed our stay immensely.
Everything you need is there, we could even order frozen meals. We really enjoyed our stay there. Thank you very much for good service!
Everything was great and ideal for a group of friends, thanks. There are other properties on the plot, but all were separate and screened off from the house. It would have been useful to have a leaflet in the house about how to access the bird sanctuary, as it was a bit confusing. But otherwise a lovely place to stay!
The house stands together with 3 other residential units on one plot, so the plot feels a little cramped. But the house itself is spacious and packed with all kinds of antiques. The location of the house is very good and we enjoyed walking along the dusty streets around the house. Especially our beagle played very well with the other dogs.
See stars.
Mahem House is a beautiful house, with spacious rooms and a very nice warm kitchen. The fireplace was also very nice, especially on cold days. The kitchen is complete with everything you need. The views are beautiful from the house. Would recommend the house for large families or 2-3 people, especially with the 2 bathrooms.
Very nice stay, unfortunately it was only one night!
Comfortable old house with everything you need for a peaceful weekend.
The owners pay attention to the smallest details. We had a great time even if it was just a stopover on the way home. We would love to go again for a weekend.
Beautiful old house built in 1890, with new additions, full of old antiques and a modern kitchen. A jewel in Wakkerstroom, spacious rooms, living room, dining room, 4 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms with a large fully equipped kitchen and lovely veranda. Customer service is above expectation, even meals are available on request. We have already been there 2 times and will definitely stay there again and again.
We received very friendly and helpful service from the owner and we had a wonderful stay.
Beautiful old house in Wakkerstroom, well furnished, spacious and clean. Lovely log fire visit with our accommodation. A real gem with all the antiques and original wooden floors.
Spacious old farmhouse with wooden floors in the rooms, hallway and living room and wide covered porch on the northeast corner. The location allowed us to walk to wherever we wanted to go in town.
The log fire was such a treat. The cleanliness and decor are top notch. A beautiful view from the veranda while enjoying a cup of coffee. Walking distance from the shops and eateries.
Brilliant stay. Highly recommended.
Affordable variety of good, reasonably priced accommodation.
This was a fantastic house. Very clean, lovely beds and has everything plus more that one would need in a holiday home. The extra touches like muffins, biscuits and more made us feel very welcome. Easy walk to town and with very friendly locals. We will be back.
A quiet, peaceful place to stay where you can rest and switch off and recharge your batteries.
A thousand thanks from the Herholdt family for the privilege of being able to stay there.
Mahem House has a lovely outlook and is a cosy spot to stay in winter. The firewood and electric blankets were wonderful in the cold and we all had plenty of hot water to shower or bath. The kitchen is well-equipped for self-catering purposes but you can also walk to town in warm weather for a treat.
Lovely, spacious, warm and comfortable. We will definitely stay at Mahem again.
In one word - beautiful! Tastefully restored old house with rural charm and modern comfort! We had a wonderful stay, slept cuddly and peacefully, and had enough light in the darkness! Will definitely go again, the blow with the whole family.
Everything is clean and working. Lovely, super friendly dogs.
A spacious, very well equipped house - the kitchen is a dream. Lovely porches to hang out on. Breathtaking view. Walking distance from the town center and the cemetery. Will definitely go back again.
We enjoyed our weekend in Wakkerstroom so much and Mahem House is an exceptional house with the most beautiful view. The house has tons of character and has everything you could possibly need. On top of that, Emma is the sweetest hostess. We will definitely visit again.
We had a lovely stay. The area was so peaceful and beautiful and the house had everything you needed for a weekend away. We will definitely stay there again.
The self-catering house is very well equipped. From coffee to small milkshakes in the fridge as well as complimentary spices. Close to village for walking. The tranquility itself.
