Accommodation is offered in bright and spacious Standard Twin and Double Rooms, a Honeymoon Suite and Family Rooms. Each room has a private viewing deck, an en-suite bathroom with a spacious outdoor shower and a bath, a mini-bar, tea- and coffee-making facilities, and air-conditioning.
Most of the rooms are set in the dune forest and are frequented by friendly warthog, red duiker, nyala, bush babies, birds and hippo. One room has a view through the bush onto a vlei and the other has a view through the bush onto the Lake. The Honeymoon suite is situated privately with views out onto a vlei. Large windows and terrace doors as well as mosquito gauze screen doors slide open onto private viewing decks, skillfully combining luxury and integration with the environment.
The main lodge area, set in the heart of Makakatana, features a communal area where all meals are served on either the raised deck wrapping around the lodge, or at the boma alongside. The lodge has a bar and a nearby private bush pool on the edge of Lake St Lucia.
Lake St Lucia supports 367 bird species of which there are only a few places in Africa that support such a concentration of bird life. Experience the captivating Wetlands by boat, or visit the world famous Big-5 Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve. Makakatana will take you to the golden, unpolluted beaches, flanked by some of the highest dune forests in the world. The virtually untouched beaches and pristine waters have the only turtle breeding grounds and tropical coral reefs in the subcontinent. Here you can snorkel, swim and take long walks on the undiscovered beaches of Cape Vidal. Enjoy a picnic lunch while the waves cool your feet and soak up the African sun. In season humpbacked whales, graceful whale sharks and schools of dolphin may be seen.
