Makhato Lodge 81 is a thatched self-catering bush lodge located in the Sondela Nature Reserve near Bela Bela. The Sondela Nature Reserve in the Limpopo province is a private game reserve just 150 km from Johannesburg, where you can enjoy the tranquillity of the bushveld, encounters with zebra, kudu, impala and giraffe, or a spot of bird watching.
Lodge 81 can accommodate up to 8 guests and comprises 3 bedrooms, an upstairs loft room, 4 bathrooms and an additional outside shower, and an open-plan kitchen, dining and living area. The first bedroom contains a king-size bed, and an en-suite bathroom with a bath, a shower, a toilet, and twin washbasins, as well as an outdoor shower. The second bedroom contains a queen-size bed and a shower en suite with a toilet and washbasin. The third bedroom has its own private entrance from outside, and contains a queen-size bed and an en-suite bathroom with a bath and a shower, twin washbasins, and a toilet. All the bedrooms have air-conditioning and ceiling fans. The upstairs open-plan loft room contains 2 single beds. This room has use of a downstairs bathroom with a shower, a toilet and a washbasin.
The kitchen is fully equipped for self-catering with a fridge-freezer, stove and oven, microwave, kettle, toaster, a dishwasher and a washing machine. The dining area contains an 8-seater dining table and chairs. The lounge features a fireplace, comfy seating, a ceiling fan, and a flat-screen TV with a selection of DStv channels. There is a stunning lapa with a built-in braai and outdoor dining furniture. The house also has an outside boma with a fire pit. Undercover parking for 4 vehicles is provided.
Sondela offers an on-site restaurant and bar, a farmyard coffee shop, a general dealer for basic necessities, communal swimming pools, a wildlife centre, and the on-site Iketla Wellness and Spa. There are plenty of activities to keep you busy including game drives, horse rides, bicycles for hire, a 4x4 obstacle course, and guided quad rides.

5 guests' feedbackVery nice house, with private pool, covered braai and a nice boma. Rooms are spacious with private bathrooms, we will definitely go again. You can have a nice rest and don't even have to drive somewhere, the animals just come to visit you. It was absolutely a lovely peaceful weekend of rest for us.
Stay was very nice, thank you. Many of the lights did not work. The pool is a welcome surprise but would prefer it to be heated. The outside room is advertised as having a shower too, but we couldn't see any shower - it was inconvenient. Could really invest in upgrading linens and pillows and having extra fridge, especially maybe at lounge area. House is really very comfortable for a large group of people - just a few things that need attention. Thank you very much!
The unit has everything you could need, beautiful view of the feed station right by the lapa, and animals walk by all day, some of the goats even came to eat from our hands. The pool was very welcome in the hot weather. Kitchen is well equipped with everything you could need. Rest of the place is perfect. Lovely quiet at night, haven't slept so well in a long time. Suggestions that could make the place just that little bit better: 2 towels per room was a bit low. Maybe put the WiFi router away from guests, I tried that first night, but only heard the next morning that it is not intended for guests. Maybe a suggestion for the room with the shower facing outside, once the sun comes up it's daylight in the room, would suggest maybe putting up a blind or something, I had to throw the one blanket over the door to to be able to sleep a little. Other than that it was a great place and I would really recommend it to anyone. We hope to come again soon for a weekend away from the hustle and bustle of JHB.

We had to wait at the unit for an hour and a half before Sondela delivered the keys. This after they informed us at reception that the key was with the unit. House was quite clean inside but garden was neglected with cobwebs everywhere. The unit has a pool but it is not cleaned or maintained. Grass unkempt and standing high in some places. Cleaning service didn't show up at all on Saturday and didn't provide any black bags.
