Mathemba House is a spacious and classy self-catering house ideally situated in the lush green suburb of Walmer in Gqeberha (Port Elizabeth). It is a mere 2 km from Chief Dawid Stuurman International Airport and is close to 2 major shopping centres, 1 of which is only 2 blocks away, and various coffee shops, restaurants and businesses.

Mathemba House can accommodate up to 8 guests and contains 3 spacious bedrooms. The first and second bedrooms each contain a king-size bed that can be converted to 2 single beds. The third bedroom contains a queen-size bed. The house has 2 modern bathrooms, one of which is an en suite. The en suite features a shower only, and the second main bathroom contains a bath and shower combination.

The kitchen is fully equipped. There is a sleeper couch in the living area that folds open into a queen-size bed. The living area also contains a TV with full DStv premium package with over 80 channels and hundreds of music channels. There is also a fully functional fireplace. The living area opens up through a stacking door to a large patio and private garden with braai facilities.

"Unsafe and inadequate. Not as advertised."

The following issues were noted with the property. Electrical wiring is faulty and dangerous. No power to the gas stove and no thermocouple on the large burner so you needed matches to light the stove which were not provided. This also meant that the gas would not stay on and kept going out. We had no way to easily cook any food. We resorted to putting bricks on the gas knobs to hold them down so that we could cook food but it was not adjustable temperature because of this - only gas turned all of the way up which made the cooking ridiculous / food just burnt. The property was advertised as having a full kitchen so by definition, this should have included an oven. There was no oven and we planned our meals around having an oven available. Full kitchen means a kitchen having a minimum of a dishwasher, range, sink, oven, and refrigerator. The microwave would constantly trip so we had to go to the property next door each time to reset the trip switch. There was no toaster. Toaster was in the photos. There was no coffee machine. Coffee machine was in the photos. There was no cleaning products to clean up any spills. Tap handle in the Ensuite shower fell off. Door handle in the twin bedroom fell off. The top of the fridge was absolutely filthy. No dishwashing liquid or dishwasher tablets were provided. The wiring in the backyard runs on the ground underneath the braai so hot coals fell on the ground and almost melted through the electricity cables. No external lights to the braai area so we had to cook in the dark. Wardrobe doors were pulled off their hinges. Kitchen cupboards were loose and fell on us when we opened the doors (my husband managed to fix this himself). The bench at the dining table gave way when my daughter sat on it. Luckily only pinched skin and a nasty bruise. They did replace this the next day but they said they had renters in for a month right before we moved in but they should have done a full check of the property to ensure it was safe and fit for purpose. Blaming the people before is not an acceptable excuse - or it shouldn't mean that we have to put up with the issues because of this. We spent the entire time there fixing problems or dealing with things that just didn't work and making work-arounds for things that were in the property description but missing. We booked this as a base for Ironman which requires a strict nutrition and meal preparation before the race. This was impossible given the circumstances. The fact that there was no oven alone would have meant that I would never have booked this property. My husband was trying to get to bike check in for the race (which has a time cut off) but instead was having to deal with the owner pitching up and expecting us to point out and fix the issues with his own property. So upset and disappointed with our stay and although we paid for our stay in full, feel that we should be compensated for the issues that we were left to deal with. Could not wait to get out of there and will never be back.
