83 guests' feedbackThe views from Huis Oppie Rant are stunning, and it is super quiet and peaceful. The cottage is completely off-grid, so you can really switch off, but the main farmhouse (a short walk away) does have WiFi if you really feel the need for connectivity . There are many nice day hikes in the area, and in summer you can even swim in the river. We will definitely be back.
We stayed at Cloete House (built 1876), which is like stepping into the past with the paraffin lamps, outside and indoor fireplaces, and slow pace of life. Surrounded by flowering aloes and mountains, we had a peaceful and very happy stay. Loved the preservation of the long family history at their farm museum in the old post office. Next time I'll take enough wood so I don't have to leave to go anywhere!
Was very nice, most beautiful scenery with silence and stars that hold a concert in the evening.
Beautiful drive from the R62 to a comfortable, spacious cottage with views over the farm and valley. Happily recommend this stay for overnight or longer.
Our accommodation was everything we could have asked for, neat and clean with beautiful scenery.
Extremely nice for a break on the more primitive side, fantastic view of nature, facilities more than adequate. The drive up to the residence is just as adventurous. The old Post Office nearby is a gem. Spent too much time at the Port Festival, would have liked to have had more time for the various hiking trails, 4x4 and fishing. In short, the accommodation and area was the winner!
Great visit. Beautiful home with rich history.
Selma is a wonderful hostess. Nothing is too much trouble. She accommodated us even though we were just one too many! It was really great and the nature is great.
The house was very neat and clean with coffee and sugar provided as well as wood for the braai place. The WiFi worked perfectly and Selomina was extremely helpful with any information I needed. Will definitely visit matjesvlei again!
The combination of a spacious old house, beautiful views, hiking trails, and a river to cool off in made for a wonderful break. Plus the family are friendly and kind hosts who love their place and heritage.
Fabulous, peaceful, nostalgic. It has everything you need. The views and walks are spectacular. Loved the oil lamps, etc. It was worth the visit if you need to unwind completely!
See stars.
It was very hot during our stay (41 degrees) and there was no fan for some relief. The general cleanliness of the cottage could be better. The cottage needs a little finesse.
Lovely stay, but for the cost of the stay one expects more than oil lamps and a donkey to get hot water. I suggest installing a gas geyser and solar panels.
Will definitely visit again. Selma as usual was a very good host. Thoroughly enjoyed the farm.
It was beautiful and tidy with everything needed. The donkey water was still warm the next morning.
A warm welcome by Bennie & Selma Nel. The cottage was so neat and met all our needs. The silence and nature was one of the greatest gifts.
What an experience. Huisie opi Rant is truly tranquility itself. The house has everything needed for self-help. Wondered about the powerlessness of the place, but didn't even notice it wasn't there. Selma is also an excellent hostess! Always thought the FAK song from there a little man walks in the swamp Godliep Antoni was just a song, then I saw him there on the wall in the living room. We will come again the day after tomorrow. For sure.
Beautiful, restored, old houses well equipped with everything needed to make a visit comfortable. Will definitely go back there. One of the hidden tourism gems.
Great environment and peaceful atmosphere.
I will visit there again.
At the top of our list for a longer stay. Thank you.
Can recommend the venue with confidence. Everything one needs is there.
Excellent placement for peace an tranquillity.
It was wonderful to enjoy a bit of old-world accommodation again with real oil lamps, hot water donkey, etc. The bonus was the beautiful view of the Swartberge and fields. Wonderful past, just a pity we couldn't stay longer.
Would love to go back and spend more time winding down.
Good accommodation. But directions to get there are confusing.
It was an unforgettable stay, the cottage was so beautiful and well equipped. Selma, the hostess, was wonderful and good company. I cannot recommend Matjiesvlei Guest Farm highly enough. I will definitely stay there again. For longer next time.
Wonderful hostess! Nothing is too much trouble!
Very special place in the mountains to break away from city or town. The environment offers many surprises for people who love the outdoors. There is no telephone or internet reception here and it is as if it had to be. We wanted to stay longer.
Beautiful scenery, especially with the snow on the mountain tops surrounding Matjiesvlei.
The silence without cell phone signal is heavenly. The mountains embrace you and it's wonderful to even be without electricity. Cutely equipped and comfortable.
The gorge route is breathtaking, the tranquility of the Karoo is infectious!
The house is particularly neat and well furnished with a lovely atmosphere. The surroundings are beautiful and the view from the patio area is truly something special. Very nice and hospitable people who made us feel welcome. I would definitely recommend the place.
Cloete Huis takes one back in time. Built in 1876. Between the massive mountains you realize how small man really is. If you read the history (which was very entertaining) of the area and you walk, you see who lived where and you just appreciate everything again. Would highly recommend it. There are homes that are more modernly furnished for those who cannot do without technology.
Quiet and peaceful. Nice stay, clean and tidy.
Everything as described above. Birds and bird sounds beautiful, river swimming spots and campsite lovely, cottages unique and tastefully furnished and comfortable, host and hostess very friendly, helpful, hospitable and interesting.
Found nature, quiet and history. The accommodation well conceived and unfussy. Could have stayed longer.
It would have been nice to be able to turn on a light, but the lamps were OK. What did bother me was the donkey. Although our fire was lit, we only had lukewarm water (closer to cold). The braai place on the stoep was very nice.
The scenery is absolutely beautiful and there is so much to see and do.
Selma herself welcomed us and pointed the way to the Wahuis. We would have liked to stay longer than just our overnight reservation, because the tranquility and character of Matjiesvlei comes to nest inside you, just like the swallows with whom we shared our observation deck. The spring wildflowers and river music from behind the trees was an extra unexpected bonus. We had a great barbecue with the cork-dry wood we could buy there, and slept comfortably until the birds woke us up. Remember to pack your binoculars to view those birds. We look forward to going again and longer! Thanks to the Nels for a great place to sleep!
Great stay in Douglas house. The hiking trail on the farm is lovely, we rowed on the river quite a few times, and had a picnic on the river bank. We have had a few cold, windy days, and the house is nice and cold (definitely built for the very hot summers). But on nice days we sat and barbecued, and really enjoyed the tranquility and technology break.
No power. Donkey geyser and paraffin lamps create a very peaceful atmosphere. If you want to switch off, ideal place.
We slept in the Oppie Rant House. Enjoyed the view! The cottage has an old charm and everything was clean and comfortable. It was interesting for the kids to see and experience how a "donkey" works. You really rest there.
For the very young and older adventurer, peaceful and secure stay minimum of 3 nights to absorb nature and sky. Excellent.
The house on the ridge has a beautiful view during the day and offers wonderful stargazing nights. We would have loved to stay here longer and also do the 4x4 route. Steering's kloof offers a nice, comfortable walking trail a short distance away. We would love to visit Matjiesvlei again.
The house has everything needed for a getaway and is very convenient. No cellphone reception gets a 10 out of 10, beautiful views of the valley and the cottage is tastefully furnished. You can sit on the veranda for hours and relax, as previous residents probably did. The old post office has interesting items and enough reading material to keep you busy and busy with the lives of former residents and families. So glad it is made available to us and preserved.
Very well received by Selma, and she often comes to see if everything is still okay. House Oppie Rand well furnished, very peaceful and quiet.
Really the place to come to a stop again, secluded without cellphone reception and electricity.
A must for those who long for silence and very dark evenings.
We had a great time and Selma is a wonderful hostess who takes care of everyone's needs. The unit is very tastefully furnished with particular attention to detail. The 7 km dirt road from the tarmac needs attention, but that was the only negative for us. We would definitely recommend Oupad's Kloof to everyone. Thank you very much Selma and Benny.
We had a lovely stay in Die Wa Huis. Thank you Selma for your kindness! Beautiful place and lovely silence!
What an experience. Everything was perfect, and we would definitely like to stay again.
We stayed at Matjiesvlei for one night on our way back to KZN. What a lovely spot. The old farm house Huis Oppie Rant is beautiful, it feels rustic but has all the comforts. My son loved lighting the fire for the hot water and we had a peaceful, restful evening looking at the spectacular stars. We will definitely be back.
The most delightful surprise, how stunningly beautiful it is here and how exquisitely the place is furnished with antiques, typically "old Cape". In the Wa-huis even a small Grandfather Clock, beautiful copper bed - great sleep - and other details such as the old iron door stop, the 3-seater pew for your suitcases in the sleeping area, the beautiful Victorian doors to the porch. Yet everything remains in simplicity as it would have been in the past. There is a second house, "Huis Oppie Rant", quite close, but more than enough privacy is offered by the nice built-in braai on the stoep. Could possibly be noisy if large group is next door or a family with small crying children. Will definitely come and stay again if we are in those regions, but then earlier to also tackle the Bobjaanskop 4X4 route which is located on the farm.
Lovely farm atmosphere, far from everything and everyone. Here you can really switch off and just take in the nature around you. The old Post Office is also a must see, you can spend hours there and get lost in the history of the area.
The peaceful beauty of the surroundings, silence and lovely autumn weather leave you with no choice but to relax, away from it all, yet close to other places of interest to visit. Our stay was very comfortable and very special in the old farmstead with no luxuries, but full of character and with everything you need, spotlessly clean, lovely beds and linen to sleep in and a porch to sit on and visit. The nearby river paddles and swims better than the sea!
After following the clear directions to the farm on the very well-maintained gravel road, we arrived at the farm house and were warmly welcomed by the owners, Bennie and Selma. The Wa-Huis stands alongside another cottage - both have stunning views over the river valley. The cottage has no cell-phone reception and no electricity, which is why we chose this venue - we needed a complete break. The cottage was clean and well-equipped. I would like to suggest the inclusion of an oven-glove and a second drying up towel. The area is gripped by a severe drought and the water situation was clearly explained. There is a special tap for drinking water in the kitchen. The braai is well-built and works efficiently, under the shaded stoep. The donkie boiler has clear instructions and a daily supply of wood. One concern was the amount of water we had to run, before the warm water came to the shower, in the light of the drought. In the shower and above the basin, the soap racks are for tall people only - it may be helpful to short people like me to have them a bit lower! We absolutely loved the silence (no sound of traffic/town noise at all), the plant and bird life, the walks, the clear air. We had a wonderful holiday!
We had a great time. The old house was beautiful and everything was very neat. Should be fantastic during the winter. We will visit again.
Step back in time with silence and peace as your companion. We stayed in the lovely Cloete House, sat on the porch and watched the sun set over the Little Karoo, stared at the stars and enjoyed the silence. Selma's hospitality and preservation of rich history is highly appreciated. We will return anytime and strongly recommend Matjiesvlei Gasteplaas.
We had a wonderful holiday at Matjiesvlei and were made to feel so welcome. Our "huis oppie rant" had so much character with spectacular views of the Swartberg mountains. The kids loved riding their bikes, swimming in the river (which is running very low with the drought) and watching the cows being milked. There's a great 10 km trail run along the 4x4 track and braai's under the Karoo sky are amazing. This is a very special holiday spot!
Neat, comfortable and the interior beautifully furnished. Candles and oil lamps enhance the lovely atmosphere. Nice!
A generous and very hospitable welcome. Everything was ready and in order to the smallest detail at the chalet. With no electricity or cellphone signal, it's definitely a place to escape to if the pressure of the modern world becomes too much.
Our chalet, Cloetehuis, has no electricity, and is therefore perfect for those of us who prefer silence and simplicity. No TV, or radio. Oil lamps and candles, and the lovely darkness when the sun went down, made our stay incredibly enjoyable. The old house has been beautifully renovated and still has wooden floors and sliding window frames. There is only a bath and no shower, which was no problem for us. The two-plate gas stove in the kitchen was very convenient to use. We were also able to barbecue outside and really enjoyed hearing the farm and night sounds. I would definitely recommend this cute place to people looking for simplicity and quiet. Our host and hostess, Bennie and Selma, are extremely kind and friendly and have made an effort to make our stay pleasant.
Friendly hostess and definitely a great getaway weekend, away from the noise, not even cell phones to bother you.
We had a wonderful stay in Thiarthuis - which is well equipped. It's in a peaceful environment with no noise and only the calls of baboons and foxes. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery and best of all - there is no cell phone reception! Our visit to the museum was informative and our adult children really enjoyed fishing in the river. We would love to go back again.
Beautiful old house with everything you need plus a lovely view. I would recommend this accommodation if you are looking for quietness away from the everyday hustle and bustle.
Privacy: 100%. Mobile signal (Vodacom): 0%. Electricity - 0% (Just bring your 'powerbank' with you). View - 100%. Cleanliness - 100%. Bring with you: 'Powerbank' that can charge mobile phones or cameras, flash, bicycles, board games and good wine. My wife and I arrived at Matjiesvlei late in the evening. A friendly Selma Nel WhatsApped us and explained how to arrive at the cottage. Unknowingly, we saw the donkey burning next to the carriage house and then we first realized that our little house had no electricity or cell phone signal. It was great! We didn't see a single person on the farm all weekend, only cattle, ostriches, thousands of bacon tree plants and breathtaking mountains! Will make another visit to Matjiesvlei.
Feel free to see the stars.
It's our second time, always an experience!
Very nice view and exceptional sunsets.
Quiet, tidy, braai wood is provided with extra lights for outside to braai. Everything was just great.
The houses are located in a beautiful environment. It is very well equipped.
This clean and beautifully situated guest house is only to be recommended. One can stay here for a long time, because the place meets all the needs for a guest house.
The character of this old house, the environment and the friendliness we experienced was exceptional.
Great to relax. The "donkey's" hot water was not very hot one night. Warm welcome and fantastic view.
A warm welcome and excellent service. Quiet and peaceful. Unique. Beautiful.
See the stars below.
We really enjoyed the weekend. The equipment in the house is very good, everything is very clean and tidy. The view is beautiful and the silence perfect for resting.
The camping was very pleasant and the surroundings are particularly beautiful. Will camp there again in the future.
Unspoiled, beautiful Klein Karoo. Lovely furnished.
Simplicity. Exit Nature. That's exactly what we were looking for and exactly what we got here as city lads. The simple (but well appointed) cottage is in the most beautiful location with views over the mountains and karoo. We were received very kindly and a lot of effort was made to make us feel welcome and at home. Would recommend the Wahuis at Matjiesvlei Guest Farm to anyone, especially if you crave being close to nature.
Was honestly delicious!
