The communication from our hostess was forwarded early with clear directions. We drove all the way to the door - without any trouble (and without GPS!). It is truly a home away from home where you are at home as soon as you walk in. Lovely cozy kitchen and also a lovely living stoep with fantastic braai facilities.
House was clean, the beds super comfy and warm, the finishing touches were perfect, and the decor was original, quirky, and lovely. Everything was thought of to make one's stay homely, comfortable and extremely enjoyable. Would love to go back again and stay longer.
This unit is so well-maintained and clean, but fabulously homely. The location is extraordinary. One of the best places we've ever stayed at. A pity we had to leave so soon. Thank you for hosting us!
As a couple in our early 80s we found the overnight stay to be an ideal break from the long road trip. A very peaceful, off the beaten track remote breakaway 3 bedroom house ideal for 3 couples or family group to get back in to the world that has gone by. Relax, braai, walk, smell the spekboom and wonder at the spectacular mountains. Lovely, well-appointed veranda and covered braai for any weather and loadshedding! Thank you to the Nel family for opening your special retreat to us. Suggestions: I couldn't find out approximately where it was before booking, thought it was near Matjesrivier at the bottom of the Swartberg Pass. But after the booking I got good directions. When finding 1945 and the lockbox on the veranda, I was too incompetent to know how to open a lock box for the first time. I needed to flip up the black cover to expose the code wheels not push it! Also, missed the very non intrusive 1945 marking on the mile stone first time. (The house between the large new Guest House and Swartskaap at the end of the track). I will definitely try to return with friends or family.
Directions were lacking after we got off the tarmac and there was no cell phone reception on the dirt road so we could find out how far and where our home was.
If you want to escape from the hectic city life, this is the place to go. The silence and beauty of surroundings was enchanting! We had a very nice stay. The quality of the bedding and towels makes Matjiesvlei Retreat 1945 stand out from other places.
The beautiful old buildings, so beautifully restored, nestled in the deep ravines with picturesque views of aloes and rangies and olive groves, absolute balm for a bruised city soul! It's very special.
More signposts on the way to destination would help a lot, especially if you are not familiar with the area and arrive straight away, with no phone signal to contact anyone, but was very grateful to have WiFi available to us after we arrived .
The place is exactly as advertised and we enjoyed our stay in this secluded valley. What did we struggle with: 1). Bedroom 2 linen was not clean. 2). I was disappointed that there was only one bag of firewood, as the patio fireplace lends itself to a nice fire into the evening. 3). I understand that the internet will be slow in an area like this, but then I would expect a better DStv package. I was trying to watch some rugby on my iPad with limited success, as the channel was not available on the DStv package.
The house is a nice holiday home with a large barbecue patio and very private location. The view and the tranquility are blissful! Very nice, easy hiking trails too.
Neat house that is very well equipped. Nice view over the farm and the mountains. Lovely to walk and explore. Perfect place to spend quality time. WiFi available. 1945 will definitely see me for a third time!
Matjiesvlei Retreat 1945 is without a doubt a top, affordable location for families of 3 to 6 people that are looking for a rest, away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. No cellphone reception, but WiFi is perfect for safety in the case of an emergency.
Jinne it was now a nice cavity for our foot. The house is nice and cozy with everything you need! Beautiful nature and the most beautiful stars!
