Mellivora Lodge is a double-storey self-catering home set in the heart of the bushveld in the Marloth Park wildlife conservancy, where one can relax and enjoy the sounds and smells of the bush. It is a 300 m walk to the Crocodile River, the Kruger National Park border fence, where you can look over the beautiful river and enjoy sightings of many animals. It is an ideal home base to explore the Kruger National Park, as it is only a 10-minute drive into the Kruger Park entering through Crocodile Bridge Gate. Mellivora Lodge is named after ‘Mellivora capensis’ which is the Latin name for the honey badger also known as the ratel.

The house can accommodate up to 8 guests and contains 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. The main bedroom contains a queen-size bed and en-suite bathroom with a bath and a shower. The second and third bedrooms each contain a queen-size bed. The fourth bedroom contains 2 single beds. All the bedrooms are air-conditioned and have fans. The second bathroom, downstairs, contains a bath and a shower. The third bathroom, upstairs, contains a shower only.

A fully equipped kitchen is fitted with a microwave, washing machine and dishwasher, double-door fridge and deep freeze. The dining room table seats 6, and the lounge upstairs has a TV with OpenView channels. There is also a pool table and dart board and table tennis.

Downstairs is a splash pool next to the patio with a built-in braai, and drop down blinds, so one can still enjoy outdoor dining in case of rain. Or spend your evenings around the camp fire in the firepit and outside braai. The upstairs deck has seating and loungers where you can enjoy the abundant bird life.

"My feeling was that the owner doesn't really care about his guests' comfort."

Unfortunately not a nice stay. I personally contacted the owner before we left to make sure there was solar power and a gas stove for loadshedding times. She assured me that they do not get loadshedding at home and therefore we were not prepared at all when we did form part of the loadshedding schedule. We could not open windows when the air conditioning went off because there was no mosquito netting in front of the windows in the bedrooms and it was therefore very hot. The mosquito nets that were on bathroom windows and doors were broken and of no use. The house is for 8 people, but the pots in the house cannot cook for the amount of people at all, only small pots. The one pot big enough was so burnt I couldn't use it. Borrowed a pot from caretaker to cook for my family, but it was also broken with only one left. No privacy if you barbecue outside on the porch, because the caretaker sits two meters away from you on his chair in front of his little house. Very agreeable. The caretaker parks his motorcycle with you in the only covered parking and because we drive a big bus, the passenger had to get out of the back door, otherwise you bump into the motorcycle. The house was not clean at all. There were three different colors of soap on the soap dish in the second bathroom when we got there, and toothpaste marks in the upstairs bathroom. I had to properly clean the bathrooms myself first. The floors make your feet dirty when you walk barefoot and the sofa smells dirty and full of dust. The beds were uncomfortable and did not sleep well. The hammock on the outside deck was broken. The plasticware that the owner has in the house for guests' use looks like it's stuff that someone else threw away and we couldn't use it to pack picnic stuff. The gas stove works with a lighter because the stove's lighter does not work. The caretaker had to show us how the stove works because there is a certain technique to lighting the stove. The house needs a good cleaning, new plasticware, mosquito nets and a gas stove. The owner is welcome to put loadshedding lights/bulbs in the house. The wooden deck is terribly loud in terms of noise when someone moves up there, especially with the pool table. The stairs to the upper floor are terribly narrow, steep and unsafe. The WiFi in the master bedroom was terribly bad.
