Millgate Cottage
-
While able to sleep a maximum of 35 guests, there are three kinds of accommodation units to choose from, cottages, suites, and a farmhouse.
The Millgate Cottage property has two self-catering, self-service cottages with modern kitchens fully equipped with stoves, microwaves, fridge-freezers, crockery and cutlery. Selected DStv channels ensure that you will not miss your favourite sports event or series. Each cottage also has a verandah and braai facilities. Guests staying in the cottages can drive their car up to the door.
Millgate has three additional self-service suites, two of which have self-catering facilities. The third, Durdle Door has a fridge, microwave and kettle, but no stove or washing up facilities. All suites have fans, heaters and DStv to make your stay a pleasant one. The views from the suites are that of a lush garden backed by forest. Guests staying in the suites leave their car in the car park.
We have refurbished our farmhouse into two separate family/group units. Farmhouse 1 accommodates five people and farmhouse 2 up to nine people. Both have fully equipped kitchens but there is only one bathroom in each unit. Because of their size, we set a minimum occupancy of three people or the rate equivalent. Set at the bottom of the garden, backed by forest, both enjoy lovely views and perfect tranquillity.
While a self-service establishment, long-stay guests have their units fully cleaned and their linen changed every three days. Long and short-stay guest can arrange daily servicing at an additional charge.
For entertainment, guests visit The Crafty Mole which is Balgowan’s local pub where neighbours rub shoulders with tourists and other Millgate Cottage’s guests. The Crafty Mole specialises in locally brewed craft beers, taken in the pub itself or al fresco, under the shade of a tree, in Millgate's lovely garden. Along with your drink you can try out a game of pool, challenge your friends at darts and have fun on the putt putt course. The Crafty Mole has a large screen DStv and is connected to WiFi for the use of Millgate Cottage guests.
Guest have use of the gardens and can climb into the forest where views are even more spectacular. Walkers can follow the farm roads surrounded by the sounds and smells of nature. There are trout dams in the vicinity and several golf courses.

60 guests' feedbackThe place is very neglected and overgrown. The kitchens' mugs, glasses and crockery do not match at all. In one residence there was a glass that was so dirty and sticky that it wouldn't come clean even after I soaked it in soapy water for 2 days. The heaters work.
Not value for money at all. The unit is very cold and no provision has been made with additional heaters or electric blankets. Kitchen utensils are minimal.
Mattress was hollow and the fitted sheet did not fit the mattress. A shower will help for people who cannot bathe. Definitely not 3 star accommodation.
We were at a hockey tournament at Michaelhouse and Millgate Cottage was conveniently close by. It is also conveniently close to many Midlands Meander hotspots. Millgate Cottage is old world and has a farm feel. Our unit has a lot of space, but guests should know that it is not modern.
Very clean and spacious accommodation with the most beautiful views.
Environment is very beautiful.
I thought the decor was very old-fashioned and could do with some updating, especially being situated where it is (on the Meander).
The place was very well kept and my stay was very relaxing.
The German Bistro and Bar on the premises is a gem. We did not have a wide view but compensated that by visiting places that have.
It was located in close proximity to the wedding we attended. It was very quiet and peaceful. The staff members that we did see were very helpful. My only issue was that we didn't meet our hostess who I believe to be 84 years old. I had to find someone to switch on our geyser at 6:30 in the morning so I could shower and we didn't have any washing up sponges/ cloths or any dishcloths. Other than that it was very nice.

Ons bespreking was in die Plaashuis. Foto’s gee nie die ware beeld. Onveilig gevoel. Sekuriteit swak (hek kon nie sluit). Ons het nie oorgeslaap, eerder ons goedjies gepak en verder gery. Erg teleurstellend.
The owners are selling and it appears that they have lost a lot of interest in the upkeep - was clean but needs attention and a lot of TLC. In an ideal location - very beautiful area.
The cottage was clean but the service provided needs attention as there was no one on hand to provide any feedback to.
TV was bad and the remotes didn't work. Linen wasn't good.
Main pic on site is of private house, not rental/s. Bathroom not nice. Decor was bad. Cobwebs about. We never saw the owners once! Oscar and his wife were lovely though. Chris as well, (pub owner).
Place is run down and not maintained at all, staff not very helpful.
Millgate is very central, set in a green and leafy area. We were made to feel very welcome, and accommodated in every way possible. Cottage was quaint, private and clean.
It's a prefect holiday location if you are look for a break away from city living.
Calm and quiet. However, quality of accommodation could be better.
Beautiful place, value for money, lots to do in the area.
This was the fourth time we've stayed at Millgate on our way to our annual holiday in KZN. With a group of 8 family members we booked two self-catering cottages and booked dinner at "The Kölsch Stube" where the hostess went out of her way to prepare and serve us dinner. The kids enjoyed the putt-putt (which could use some attention) while the rest of the family enjoyed a drink at The Crafty Mole Pub. We will definitely stay there again in the future.
The room was large and spacious, the bed creaky. The head bord and skirting plays havoc. The bath was nice and big and water hot. The electricity around the fridge is an issue
The advantage of the place - it is very peaceful and quiet. Accommodation (bed and TV) not up to standard. Curtains in bathroom missing.

Some of the smaller cottages appear to be in fairly good nick. The house was dirty and unserviced for the duration of our four night stay. The furniture is old (hand-me-down items), the kitchen, cookware and basic utensils were in a sorry state (or simply lacking), the braai was rusted through and virtually unusable, the stoep furniture was decrepit etc. This made for a miserable stay and experience!
Wonderful place where you can just relax and take in the picturesque area.
Nice! Well equipped. Nice bar nearby. Peaceful, clean and quiet.
A peaceful farm experience with an "English country garden", chickens, monkeys, a plowing tractor and the occasional train whistling.
It was pleasant, but I myself would not stay there again.
Nice environment. The houses are pretty, but the ones we stayed in did not look nice from the outside. Flat roofs with prefab walls. Not soundproof - the neighbours snored really loudly.
Cold room because the heater was not turned on before our arrival. No cover on the matress. No electric blankes, thin duvet with only one extra blanket. Matress was not nice. No amenities to wash dishes.
When we arrived at Millgate the help was in the washroom so we had to look for her first. When we found her, she was terribly unfit. We then got into our room and realized that there were no shower facilities. We then asked if they could move us to a room with a shower if that would be possible. The manager then arrived with a terrible attitude, so we decided against it to take another room. We felt terribly unwelcome. The next day, the cleaners didn't even hang up our towels properly or wash out the bathtub. We drank coffee in the morning, but for our second day they did not come to put coffee or milk in the room again. I also just want to note that we were not in a self-catering room. The whole experience was unpleasant and distasteful. Would not recommend to anyone.
Didn't get a key the first night to lock the house with. The manager didn't even come to introduce himself. The sink was cracked and dirty. I myself was a manager of a Nature Reserve. That's not how I want to spend a weekend I paid money for, no.
Millgate Cottage is in a peaceful, safe and friendly setting. The staff members are friendly and respectful. You can just ask to get what you need. It is well located near Nottingham Road and Howick. The cottage has excellent direction booklets on valuable visits in the area.
Millgate is centrally located to visit all the places that are located there. It is also nice to walk through the shops on site and the eatery is very convenient for a meal. The tranquility of the big trees with the birds is very nice for us to enjoy.
I will be booking for a holiday because the environment is suitable for unwinding after a year of hectic work. I intend to make this a holiday destination for a retreat at least once a year. Thanks to Jean and company my brief stay there was very memorable.
I thought Millgate Cottage was supposed to be self-catering accommodation, but there were no facilities to cook or clean.
A swimming pool would have improved the stay. Little to do on site.
For the asking price, the buildings are in urgent need of renovation inside and out. Upon arrival we were upgraded to a unit with a kitchen for the same price. Although the unit, crockery and linen were clean, the whole complex needs urgent attention in terms of deterioration (large cracks, rust etc.). This put a damper on our expectations (I sent photos to LekkeSlaap). The photos that appear on Millgate's own information brochure were definitely taken at least 15 years ago judging by the age of the persons as well as the size of the plants.
Paid too much for the accommodation. We were only 7 adults and 2 children and paid for 11 people.
It had been good. Thank you very much!
We loved our stay, as well as the caring personality of our Host - Petra. Our Cottage was clean and nicely prepared. We were advised of availability of extra blankets should a need arise as it gets cold at night in autumn. Millgate is conveniently located close to the attractions of the Meander, be it Nottingham Road or closer to the Mandela Capture Site, even Howick. We plan to make a return trip which is even longer than 3 days.
See the stars.
We had a lovely stay at Millgate. Everything is beautiful and clean and the environment is simply fantastic. They will surely see us again.
We will definitely visit again. It is not far from the attractions in the area and there is a homely friendliness.
The place was clean and has everything people need to sleep over. The environment is beautiful. Dinner was delicious and value for money. Will definitely stay there again.
We really enjoyed our stay, the service and cleanliness were great! We just think that the garden need some attention and also the road leading to the cottage - noted as constructive criticism.
Ideally situated for a weekend retreat.
Millgate Cottage offers comfortable accommodation in a peaceful atmosphere with friendly people!
Staff very friendly. Enjoy a nice dinner, on short notice. Room needs some upgrading but is very clean.
Will spend the night there again if we come in the direction.
Peta was very helpful.
It was very peaceful.
Millgate Cottage is located in a very beautiful area, it is blissful to wake up to the sounds of nature and an incredible tranquility. There is also a lot to do in the area which makes the location of the Cottage very central. There were four of us in the unit and we arrived late at night. We wanted to have a cup of coffee each, but were disappointed when there were only two packets of instant coffee and two tea bags available. Granted, it's a self-catering unit, but for the price it would just be nice to have enough coffee and tea available. Rather, the unit may be more suitable for fewer guests at a time.
The photo on the website is slightly misleading. It is indeed Millgate Cottage, but our accommodation was in other units behind this Cottage which are not so vivid. A peaceful quiet setting with shade garden, but still within easy reach of all the interesting places on the Midlands route. Good standard accommodation equipped with everything needed.
See the stars below.
Lovely, neat and convenient cottage with a great local pub that serves good food and provides good company.
