Swartberg Hotel
Swartberg Hotel
-
Established as a hotel in 1864, the Swartberg is now one of 19 national monuments in the village and is still the only hotel in Prince Albert today. It is the ideal place to enjoy the vast open expanses of the Karoo's breathtaking natural beauty and a night sky filled with stars so bright you’ll have to see them for yourself to believe it.
The Mont d’Or Swartberg Hotel offers guests a choice of rooms in the main building, as well as cottages set in the tranquil garden. Each of the spacious rooms is comfortably furnished with an elegant Victorian feel, and the cottages overlook the gardens.
The hotel features a large Victorian Dining Room where you can enjoy an a la carte menu of delicious local dishes. The on-site coffee shop serves both residents and guests breakfast and lunch. If you would like to relax after a long day, join us for a drink at our Ladies Bar, and when there’s a rugby game on, you’ll find it filled with plenty of locals.
The Karoo is known for its dry, hot summer days, which means the hotel would simply not be complete without a swimming pool to cool off in. Take a dip or lounge in the shade with a nice cold drink from the Ladies Bar. Guests will have access to the hotel’s in-house gym to get in your daily workout, or you can treat yourself to a massage at the Swartberg Hotel Spa.
Prince Albert is easily accessed from the N1 and is the perfect stopover if you are travelling between Cape Town and the interior of South Africa. The road to Prince Albert from the N2 is a little longer, however, the magnificent sights of Meiringspoort or the Swartberg Pass are truly breathtaking, and a chance to experience either should not be missed.

162 guests' feedbackIt was my son's birthday, and there was a present for him in the room. Enjoyed eating and hanging out. Staff are top notch.
Great stay as always. Good, friendly service.
And how. We were treated like 'royalty'. Thank you.
An absolute big treat. Nice stylish and clean room. Vehicle was safe. Breakfast was delicious. Highlight: Dinner in the Victoria Room. Will definitely use their hospitality again.
It's just great to be in Prince Albert and the Swartberg Hotel is a bonus. Thanks for keeping the vegetarian dish on the menu. The Victoria dining hall is beautiful and has a nice old world charm atmosphere.
Great hotel in the heart of Prince Albert. We enjoyed our overnight stay. The room was comfortable, and we loved looking out over the town and walking to the shops.
Pleasant stay in Swartberg Hotel.
Beautiful! Wonderful that history is so well preserved. Dinner in the Victoria Room was excellent. Friendly and competent staff. Well done!
Beautiful stay. Had a great time and plan to go back again.
Will definitely stay there again.
The staff were very friendly and helpful and the overall experience was fantastic.
We had a great stay and everything was nice and good.
Quick sleepover on the way back home. Everything is clean and working. Friendly staff and delicious food. Secure parking behind the hotel. Always nice here!
Had a nice stay and it is a very peaceful environment. Our room was somewhat on the small side without a balcony or a porch where we could sit and drink a little wine. Our duvet had a strange spot/stain and had to report it before it was replaced. However, the bed slept great and the bedding was otherwise great.
Always nice to stay at Swartberg Hotel. Perfectly located, clean, tidy and good food! Only complaint is the price compared to the previous few years. About the 40% increase.
Comfortable room and bathroom with secure parking.
We celebrated a special occasion and the Swartberg Hotel in Prince Albert was ideal for it. It is an old classic hotel but very clean and excellent, friendly staff. The rooms were clean and everything we needed was available.
Nice stay, thank you. Very disappointed in that the room given to us was indeed a luxury room but it did not look the same as in the photo.
Very nice. Beautiful old Karoo atmosphere and friendly staff.
Very clean and tidy.
Clean, nice accommodation with friendly people. Food is an absolute bonus.
Will definitely stop over again. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay.
What a pleasure to end our last night after a long vacation on the road. Lovely, spacious rooms with excellent service at all levels. Restaurant and gin bar were both great! They will see us again for sure!
We had a wonderful stay at Mont d'Or Swartberg Hotel. Friendly and helpful staff. Clean, beautiful, and comfortable rooms.
The rural hospitality and friendly service are truly part of the treasure of the Karoo!
Efficient and friendly staff, great pool, and tasty dinner all at a reasonable cost. Highly recommended.
Very quaint old hotel, great history. Very friendly staff.
Great spot and staff are very friendly and helpful.
Cute town. Loved the gin bar and the coffee shop. Breakfast was excellent. Staff really helpful.
Beautiful village in a beautiful setting. Lots of places to visit and nice coffee spots.
No rest and had to drive the next morning. Lovely rooms and nice beds and bedding, but this was useless due to the staff speaking at the top of their voice and laughing, etc. way past midnight.
Charming and friendly staff. Beautiful hotel. We will always make special plans to stay over.
Location can't be better. Secure parking. Clean. Nice food. Hotel has generator which is available 24 hours, so no problem with power cuts. Will stay there again.
The hotel management and staff are friendly and offer great customer service. There is also a delicious restaurant, which also offers gin tasting. The town offers a sense of security. Will definitely visit the hotel again.
The staff are friendly and keen to help. We enjoyed the substantial breakfasts. My one daughter was able to attend online classes in one of the work areas in the main part of the hotel which was very much appreciated.
Very well welcomed by friendly staff. Room is very neat, spotlessly clean with pure white cotton linen. Would recommend this hotel anytime for a getaway.
The room was spacious and well equipped and it was nice to be able to make a cup of tea in the room when we got there. Lovely quiet in the evening. We also ate very well at the hotel's restaurant. Our batteries are recharged.
Excellent hotel in a wonderful town! Excellent service and they go out of their way to make extra effort!
Had such a nice stay, and greatly appreciated their accommodation of our small children! Would stop by again anytime!
We had a great stay, room was fantastic, sitting on the veranda and people watching was so nice. Delicious breakfast and staff go out of their way to make you feel welcome and fulfill every wish.
Not only is Prince Albert a clean little gem, but the hotel was well situated, clean, the staff were jovial and helpful, the food was good, especially the breakfast. Will definitely be back.
Very comfortable and friendly.
Very relaxing after a long day in the car.
Prince Albert is beautiful and clean. Delicious Karoo hospitality. Hotel has power during load shedding.
We arrived very late in the evening, ate and had a good bed to sleep in. Our itinerary was such that we had to leave again very early the next morning after breakfast. If we come to that part of the country again, we will definitely want to stay longer.
Slept wonderfully in one of the most comfortable beds at any place to sleep. Expected the wooden floors and is part of the hotel's atmosphere - although we don't prefer hardwood floors, it fits the character. Delicious dinner and breakfast. Secure parking. Staff at every post in the hotel were great all weekend - without exception. At reception, restaurant, coffee shop, deli, gin bar - everywhere. Well done!
Mont d’Or Swartberg Hotel was able to shuffle our booking around when we had to cut our trip short and still provided a pleasant and memorable stay despite being fully booked. Great customer service!
Nice historic hotel on the main street, it's nice and close to everything. Room is a bit neat but comfortable and tidy. Staff are very friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay there again.
It has a restaurant and nice pool and garden and also a bar, library and coffee shop. Nice veranda to the main street.
Would have liked to stay longer to see and experience more of the town and surroundings. The Garden Cottage is cute and nice and cool, but needs some renovation. A light by the dressing table will help.
Lovely and clean bedroom with ample space. Beautiful garden.
Pleasant Karoo experience with hospitality and old-fashioned charm.
Will stay there again. Friendly and hospitable.
The staff is friendly and helpful, rooms clean and tidy.
Clean and tidy and the food was delicious. Staff very friendly and helpful. Will definitely stay there again. Could easily spend a week in this hotel. Will just remember to bring 2 prong power plug next time. Figured it would be available in room.
Hotel is in historical building. Building needs a lot of attention. Was busy with breeding work in portal and reception area. At least maintenance is done. Will definitely stay there again.
Staff, food and service were great.
The staff were very friendly and helpful from the receptionist, waitress and the person on duty at the bar. The pool area is beautiful. The double room was very clean and the decor very nice. There is even a hair dryer, I forgot mine. The food is of excellent quality and delicious. The whole hotel is spotless and tidy. Definitely value for money because a booking also includes breakfast. My husband and I would definitely book again.
Very impressed with the hotel, full facilities: WiFi, swimming pool, great restaurant and bar, private, neat and hospitable.
Lekker ontbyt en veilige verblyf met parkering.
Fantastic hotel in a fantastic town.
The hotel is very well maintained and the old world charm has been retained. We booked unit 2 which has a balcony overlooking the main street. What stood out most to us was the friendliness of the hotel staff. From the waiters to the receptionists, everyone was always friendly and polite.
I had a great stay at Swartberg Hotel! The food was of high quality, the room was spotless and the service was excellent! The owner and her team made sure that I enjoyed my stay. Well done!
Although the building is very old, it is very tastefully furnished and meets a high standard!
Neat, organized and value for money.
Old world charm, friendly reception, great service, good kitchen, room service with Covid was well done, pleasant people.
Service excellent. Everything is spotless and neat.
Definitely going to stay again and longer.
Just always a nice get away where time stands still.
Very good and friendly service. Stayed in a cottage and with the beautiful garden you don't feel confined to a room. Everything nice clean and tidy.
We had a great stay in the Swartberg Hotel. The area is picturesque. Staff were friendly and we received excellent service!
Enjoyed our 10th wedding anniversary here. Lovely garden cottage.
Neat and clean with all the facilities in the rooms. There were no extra blankets, but I am sure that if you requested some they would bring it.
We travelled with a small baby and the hotel kindly arranged a cot for us. It's one of the few that allow children in the area. We had dinner in our room which was excellent. The hotel is right in the centre of the village, so you can't get a better location. We will definitely consider staying here again if in the area - excellent service.
Restaurant food was delicious and breakfast too - old world romance.
Despite Covid, their service was great.
We were warmly welcomed and treated well the whole time.
A nice country setting.
Well located with pleasant staff and good food.
No hot water. Untrained staff. Her in the breakfast plate!
Friendly, well-trained staff. Food in restaurant nice and well priced.
Very clean, very cramped.
Everything was neat and clean at the Hotel and in the room. Tables were nicely set with meals. Peaceful staff and very helpful. Will definitely spend the night there again and use LekkeSlaap.
Beautiful hotel. The cottage's carpet was just very dirty under the sofa and bed. Furthermore, the service was good and the hotel beautiful. For the buffet breakfast, we would have liked a list of available options to tick off. The waiters get very confused and repeating your choices 3 times and still not getting the right order is frustrating.
The big disappointment was that the towels in the room were dirty. Furthermore, the luxury room also lacked luxury in the following respects: the curtains looked as if they had shrunk in the wash, the framed picture above the bed was poorly hung and no electric blanket.
Wooden floors were a bit of a problem with motorcyclists walking up and down the corridor (very) early in the morning. There were also slightly messy dining arrangements, but this could be sorted out.
The room is good. Also, breakfast was well cared for. We dined twice in the restaurant. That was also well taken care of. Unfortunately, upon arrival we were not well informed about the parking lot, the route from the parking lot to the hotel. We are also remiss to say that the luggage can best be brought in via the main entrance. For the rest, the staff was friendly.
I was very disappointed in the accommodation and breakfast. We were 2 couples and other 2 had to sleep in the garden rooms. Our room, no. 12, was outside the hotel on the top floor. Toilet leaked and entire floor was soaking wet. No kettle in the room but provided for coffee and tea. Breakfast was another problem. Probably waited 30 minutes just to be helped for coffee, after that we just had to wait for the rest. I know the hotel was fully booked, but I would think after the lockdown period they would be ready for such a challenge.
We come to Prince Albert quite often because my parents live in the nursing home there. We prefer to stay in Mont d'Or Swartberg Hotel. It's a comfortable, neat hotel with a homely atmosphere. We will go back every time. Thanks to the management and all the staff. You guys contribute to a wonderful experience every time.
We have already slept here and are trying to plan our route in such a way as to stay in Prince Albert if we drive from Limpopo to the Eastern Cape. It's always nice and clean with a good restaurant. The rooms are beautiful and large and well appointed. During the day it is nice to sit on the stoep for lunch or something to drink. The bar inside is also nice and nicely air-conditioned. We always have a great time.
Can definitely recommend the hotel. Service is excellent as are the meals.
My wife has a problem knee and can't climb stairs. When checking in, our room was on the first floor, but extremely friendly staff at reception found us another room on the ground level. Meals are great, staff extremely friendly yet professional. We have stayed at the hotel before, and the service that was provided then was again provided. The hotel will see us again next time we go to Prince Albert again.
We really enjoyed our stay at Swartberg Hotel and will definitely visit again. The room was clean and the staff were very friendly and helpful. The service in the Gin Bar was very good and brisk and the breakfast was top notch.
We really enjoyed our stay at Swartberg Hotel and will definitely visit again. The service at the restaurant was unfortunately not up to standard and everything on the menu was not available either. Breakfast was top notch and the service during breakfast was even better.
Excellent service and the staff were very helpful. The room we stayed in was excellent and definitely worth it. Restaurant and meals were great and the Gin Bar was a nice place to eat with snacks. Would definitely recommend staying here.
Guests in the hotel get no advantage over people who only book for meals because everything else is closed. With feedback a lot of excuses are made, but at the cost you expect more. Flies were a lot of trouble and waiters were definitely not enough for the amount of people. No management to see on request. Food was good and accommodation nice and quiet.
Rondavel was not clean and needs renovation. Rubbish lying around and air conditioning not working. Very expensive for a place to sleep in a beautiful town.
We enjoyed the stay very much. The staff are friendly and the meals are tasty and the gin bar is a winner!
Swartberg Hotel is really a fantastic place! Everything is neat, clean and tidy. The room is very spacious and comfortable! We enjoyed a good old Christmas Eve dinner of high quality! It really is the best place to stay! The customer service was of high quality. Thank you very much for a lovely short time with you - we would like to come again for a longer visit.
Beautiful hotel, great helpful staff, country atmosphere - great time.
Excellent stay in a beautiful hotel. The staff are friendly, helpful and professional. Very nice room we had. Fully recommended for staying in Prince Albert. We will definitely see the hotel again!
Wonderful to be able to stay in such a beautiful country town like Prince Albert. Accommodation, friendliness, delicious food. Everything was an experience! Will definitely visit again!
We are a family of 5 and the staff went out of their way to accommodate us.
Excellent service through friendly staff. Dinner in restaurant was excellent.
Enjoyed every moment. The Hotel is beautiful and the people are all very hospitable.
The Swartberg Hotel offers excellent accommodation in spacious and neat rooms with friendly and helpful service. It was a pleasure to stay here and it's a place that I will definitely visit again.
It was just a one night stay that we enjoyed in a friendly environment. It was nice to have a gym.
My experience was very positive which included the booking, booking confirmation, arrival, stay and departure. Quality of the meals was very good.
Except for the bad service at dinner, it is a place to be recommended and enjoyed.
Luxury rooms not really luxurious. We would go back but stay in chalets for self-catering. Main restaurant needs improvement re chefs.
The hotel is neat and the service is good.
My family and I had the most memorable trip from Cape Town through the Swartberg Pass to Prince Albert. Our stay at the Swartberg Hotel was amazing - the dinner in the restaurant was outstanding and we loved the new little Gin Bar. Hope one day I will get back to this magical destination!
Hotel that every person should visit.
We really enjoyed the hotel. Service very well.
It is wonderful that the original character of the hotel is preserved. It is a beautiful building with lovely old furniture. It is clean, neat and has the most wonderful staff.
Lovely dinner and great breakfast, we really enjoyed staying here.
Very neat hotel and friendly staff.
I would definitely go back if the occasion arises.
Friendly staff. Quaint experience in the Victorian dining room.
The food at the Victoria Room was fantastic and good value, and they had a children's menu, which had generous portions. The parking was very safe, and the facilities like the pool were enjoyed.
The food was delicious and stylishly prepared. Very central location. Wonderful to just relx on the patio when you're not up and about. The TV channels were on pont and the bar was always ready to serve. We really enjoyed our wedding anniversary there.
The reception was very friendly and helpful. The room was clean and very tidy. Dinner and breakfast are top notch. All staff were very friendly and pleasant. Definitely a stay to recommend.
We had a nice stay with helpful, friendly staff.
Will stay there permanently if I have to! Great everything! Well done, Swartberg Hotel and staff!
We had a beautifully decorated room with a very comfortable bed and lovely linen. Our room went out onto the balcony which was lovely to watch the sunrise the next morning. The meals were excellent.
We were received in a friendly and professional manner. This is truly a world class gem!
Wonderful accommodation, excellent food and perfect location!
Beautiful hotel with good facilities, excellent service and pleasant staff and management. Will definitely recommend the hotel to everyone.
Old hotel, yet nice accommodation. The bad/shower was not comfortable. Dinner and breakfast was delicious. I paid the full amount and they said we still owed R550 for accommodation. Luckily I was able to show on my phone that I have paid the full amount. Would appreciate it if you could also confirm this with them.
I have always wanted to stay in Prince Albert! The last three times we just drove through there or went to the coast or to Gauteng. I wanted to show the town to our teenage children and experience the atmosphere for a day. We stayed over two nights which gave us time to drive leisurely on day one through Calitzdorp and back around the Swartberge over the Swartberg Pass to Prince Albert. It was everything we expected, beautiful scenery, terribly hot 42°, but all worth it. The hotel was an escape after a day in the fields and mountains. The cool bar with cold Glenhoff Draught from Mossel Bay and the pool made up for it. The hotel is very neat, and the food in the restaurant and on the veranda was very nice and tasty. The rooms were spacious and tidy with decent beds and air conditioning that worked. The next day we spent the whole day exploring the town on foot, shopping, eating and drinking. Beautiful architecture and history seen and experienced. The people of the Karoodorp are, as is well known, beautiful, friendly people who care about their town. We can visit the town more and thus support the economy and the people better.
The booking, the reception, the service and the clean and comfortable accommodation make a stay in the Swartberg Hotel a must!
It suited us for staying in Prince Albert and was fairly good value for money. Cleanliness was an issue in that there was thick dust on light fittings and dust in the drawers. The antique furniture had seen better days in some instances but it was a large comfortable room. Staff were helpful and there was a nice area around the pool.
We didn't get the room we booked, but it was OK.
Was received very kindly and was very helpful when we started making inquiries about a rugby match. Stayed in the Meiringspoort chalet and everything was as expected. Food in restaurant was delicious!
The hotel has recently been upgraded with only the best decor for the rooms. It's comfortable, clean and the management is very friendly and helpful. The street-facing rooms on the first floor have a nice veranda where you can watch all the activity on the main street. It's definitely worth spending the night there!
Historic building, immaculately renovated, with friendly staff and good food.
The new managers are very helpful. The food in the restaurant is excellent, especially the lamb shank. The pool is big and lovely.
The friendliest people, very hospitable and the hotel's food is delicious.
Great Hotel with very helpful staff, an Oasis in the Karoo. On the downside, the food was dreadful. I saw another reviewer comment on the lamb shank (to be avoided).
Location is within walking distance of many places, linen was clean, rooms tidy and the food... top shelf, had a great time and also had a great time around the pool. Would highly recommend the Hotel. Staff were very friendly and helpful.
If I am able to get a good price, I plan to return there for a month next year so that I can unwind, again, and just enjoy this magical town in the comfort of this beautiful old building where my every need was taken care of. The rooms are gorgeous with beautiful old antiques and very comfortable beds, awesome showers and good heating in winter. The food was excellent, even though I am vegetarian and there was not a large selection available; however, there are plenty of places that the hotel recommends where you can find foods to suit your needs (vegetarian, light meals, etc). I visited during the coldest part of the year and never felt it as there are fires everywhere, plus feather duvets. The staff are incredibly friendly, always willing to chat, but also happy to give you as much privacy as you want. Free WiFi enabled me to stay in touch with my world. As I said above, I discovered my own personal piece of paradise, and I fully intend to return in the future, all being well. I cannot recommend it highly enough!
Slept here one night on the way deeper into the Karoo. Had a nice meal, stayed, slept, then walked around and explored the village. Hotel and town pleasantly surprised us.
It's great to get there.
The hotel takes you back in years. Very nicely renovated and has an atmosphere that makes you realize this is how the people lived many years ago. The food is top notch and HUGE portions. Also something different from the usual on the menu such as e.g. kudu steak. The service was prompt and very pleasant.
Beautiful old building that is well restored and well maintained. Safe parking and good food.
This hotel has a lot of old fashioned charm which makes you connect to the surrounding Karoo. Very friendly staff and they serve very good meals too. Their lovely garden and swimming pool is a great plus.
Staff service was very good. Room very good. Dinners very good. Breakfast next door good, but could do with more variety.
The visit was worth it. Swartberg Hotel offers good value for money. Corridors were a bit busy and noisy at times. I would prefer to spend the night in the garden rooms on a next occasion. Apart from the excellent service I received at the restaurant and coffee shop, I can't really give the rest of the staff full marks. There was no way to even offer to help with luggage.
Good stay, problem with bath in room 6, uncomfortable! Restaurant provides excellent food and service.
See the stars below.
Lovely place to stay overnight on the way to the Cape. Room was luxurious and town interesting to walk through! We were impressed with the facilities, staff and delicious food! We can definitely recommend the Swartberg Hotel as a destination and wished we could have stayed longer. We will definitely be happy to return there again.
Will return. Hospitality was excellent. Thank you!
The hotel is beautiful and child-friendly.
The personnel of the Hotel were very friendly. I dined in their Victoria Room and the food was excellent. I had a super stay. Can't wait to go back! Thanks to all concerned.
Thank you very much for the great treat! You feel welcome from your arrival to your departure! Neat and clean rooms.
Great service, delicious dinner, but the breakfast is a bit on the "bland side". Room offers a great view, neat and clean.
We would like a shelf or a table in the bathroom to unpack our things. The building is old, but beautiful!
Beautiful, comfortable hotel.
Will definitely use and recommend you guys again!
Very nice, cozy room with access to upper balcony. Very nice breakfast. Was able to relax by the pool. Very centrally located.
