We offer 7 newly built, well isolated, open plan bathrooms each with a king-size bed, mini-safe and ceiling-vent. For the ladies hair-dryers are available. Two of our rooms can be converted into a 4 person family room.
Guests can explore the wine route in our chauffeur-driven Rolls Royce, Silver Shadow
The heated swimming pool and top deck of the Lodge overlooks the whole valley. The on-site Belgian Restaurant is offering Belgian classics and traditional South African dishes. Bar with a wide variety of Belgian-, Imported- & Local beers and a collection of carefully selected local wines.
To the South towards Cape Town (2 hours) you enter the Boland. To the North towards Barrydale (40 minutes), you enter the Fruit Pantry of South Africa of the Little Karoo. To the East towards the N1 (45 minutes) you will experience the vastness of the Great Karoo. Drive to Cape l'Agulhas (approximately 1 hour) the most Southern tip of Africa, and you can watch whales in the Overberg region.
Montagu lies nestled between the Langeberg and Riviersonderend mountain ranges. The village offer a perfect halfway stop between Cape Town and the Garden Route. Robertson Wine Route is on our doorstep, and might be the best kept secret in South Africa. The general perception is that the Wine Routes closer Cape Town offers the best Wine Route experience, but in this Wine Route one can taste wine on a barge, have sundowners on the river and even have dinner served while drifting soundlessly down stream. Visit our suggestions for a four day stay in Montagu and discover the magic of this historical village.
The climate is perfect ... Far enough South to escape the heat of the Karoo, far away North to get away from the long wet winters of the Cape. In winter, the days are warm and sunny, with the occasional hint of rainfall. Autumn brings on a kaleidoscope of colours. In October, Montagu becomes a picture perfect haven with the abundance of roses for which it is famous.

23 guests' feedbackThe 360-degree view from the deck. Comfortable accommodation. Nice breakfast and an especially great shower.
I guess that this establishment was once a bit more well-kept based on the pictures. Things seem a bit dated. It's nothing special, but fine for a quick one-night stay-over. The bar and restaurant that is advertised seem more like an "oh ok, if you really want to make use of it I guess we can accommodate you" kind of setup. I would have liked to try one of their imported beers, but the bar was abandoned with minimal stock and mostly empty fridges, with no indication of how to get service. I could have gone to ask the owner, but they were busy having a "braai" with their friends/family and I did not want to disturb them walking in on their gathering. The breakfast we had included with our stay was "fine", but not of a high standard by any means. A buffet was provided, which consisted of a kitchen plate with a few fruits and small cups of yoghurt placed on it. We could order a "free" omelet or egg breakfast with the "modest" buffet (as it is advertised). We ate, it tasted good, we thanked them and we left. The owners were never directly unprofessional, but my wife and I both got the idea that they were just "riding it out", and if there was once a bit of passion involved in the project, it seems to be missing in action at this point in time. Statements provided on informational booklets, that read: "Don't complain about "xxx", this is Africa after all", speak for itself as to their attitude towards having a go at being the best they can be. Africa has its problems, but business owners using this to "warrant" offering a lower class of service, instead of rising to the occasion and working around the problem, is not contributing anything constructive. No, I don't think I'll ever visit here again.
Very nice place, needs a bit stronger light on bedside tables and maybe a small fridge in the room. Pool and breakfast were great.
We felt that there was no enthusiastic desire to make our stay memorable. The dining room was understandably closed for dinner but our host, although he recommended restaurants in town, was very negative about them. The quality of the toilet paper in the lavatory was unacceptable as was the quality of the instant coffee in the room. Breakfast was acceptable but not outstanding. All in all it was a rather dull visit and we would not repeat it.
Beautifully located on the mountain, panoramic views, secure parking, customer friendly service. We would love to come back!
Reasons I wouldn't recommend: There are quite a few stairs to the rooms and we weren't aware of that. Important to indicate this on the website, especially if you have a lot of heavy luggage. Owner did help upon arrival. Although rooms are spacious, tidy, well-equipped and tasteful, there is no privacy as all rooms open onto corridors to pool, bar and rooftop. With only sliding doors, it was impractical to enjoy fresh air in the heat without giving up privacy.
Good place to stay. Breakfast was good especially the farm omelette. Just wish there was a common fridge and a microwave.
The location and area is ideal for tourists. The only negative would be that the bathroom doesn't have a door and the howling wind due to the location can be quite disturbing, but it is part of nature and out of the owners' control. Very friendly hosts who welcomed us warmly.
Mountain View advertises as a lodge with lodge rates. It is, however, nothing but a backpackers with an en suite bathroom and a big bed. There is no basic amenities such as a bar fridge, bottled water or TV. The WiFi's signal was very weak - mostly no signal - for which they blame the fact that they are in Africa. The host and hostess were very friendly and welcoming and there is a lovely heated pool and deck with great views, but rooms and cast iron animals in the garden, doesn't make it a lodge. If they halve their rates, it might justify the value of the type of accommodation. I blame myself for the error of judgement, since I have not read their reviews and made my decision based on the name and the pictures I saw.
Spacious and clean accommodation. The owner is very friendly and helpful. Beautiful views of Montagu!
There is a wonderful view from the top terrace over the city and the mountains. Both landlord and lady are very helpful and friendly. There are many small areas where you can relax, eg in the bar - If you like to drink beer then get there.
Friendly and helpful host and hostess. Clean accommodation and roof terrace with fantastic 360° views over the entire Montagu Valley. Excellent and large selection of Belgian beers available, which was very refreshing during the heat wave. Additional ventilation through the rooms (outside the front sliding door on the landing) would have helped a lot during the terribly hot Montagu days and nights. It is walking distance from the town centre, but the walk back is uphill. The pool next to the roof terrace was very welcome during the heat wave. For privacy it would be good if the curtains at the sliding door could be "block-outs".
I will recommend Mountain View Lodge anytime. The view over the valley and the mountains from the swimming pool is unbeatable. There is a lookout deck for when you just want to relax. There is also a nice chill area and you don't have to sit in your room the whole time. Breakfast is delicious. Rooms are comfortable with everything you could possibly need. Don't just stay there for a single night. It is possible to relax for a good couple days at MV Lodge.
Hospitality from owners was excellent and we had a good time with them and other guests over quite a few Belgian beers.
Pleasant people and a nice and peaceful atmosphere.
I would think for the price there should be a fridge and an air con in the room. The free WiFi did not work. The place has a very nice view of the town and the valley.
We had a nice stay, it wasn't a quick stop. I am writing the review after we have been to 2 other places. Photos can be deceiving. The room itself was simple. Oh I guess I just expected more. The owners are very nice. We then drove around and found a restaurant called van Kokkemans. It made our night!
Bedding old. Room not cleaned properly.
Nice view from the terrace. Friendly and helpful owners.
It was very funny to us that there was no bathroom door. My son came back from a walking tour and the next day we drove on to Hartenbos. He just slept in his sleeping bag with me on the king-size bed... at least mother and son didn't want to sleep completely together in the same bed.
Best breathtaking view in Montagu, peaceful, quiet and hospitable. Highly recommended.
The place is just breathtaking. The owners are very friendly and it's a lovely place to get a piece of mind. Would definitely go again.
We njoyed this venue very much and the host was on the ball all the time. we realy loved the tour and got to see ots of things that made it even more special thank you so much
