The lodge is situated on a 22 hectare property, part of the Lower Breede River Conservancy and nestles on the river bank about 2 kilometers from the tiny coastal village of Infanta.
Our situation is unique in that no other habitation can be seen and the lodge has magnificent views up and down the estuary. The lodge faces north and is protected from the prevailing sea breezes, offering exclusivity to residing guests With five individually decorated en-suite rooms all with private decks overlooking the river.
Our menu is renowned for its excellence using products sourced fresh from the sea, river and surrounding farms.
This is one of the best whale watching areas in the South Africa, known as the" Whale nursery of South Africa" (130 whales during the 2009 census).
The Breede River is a fishing hot-spot with Kob, Spotted Grunter and Garrick regularly caught. De Hoop Marine Reserve a World Heritage Site is our neighbour.
An amazing 204 bird species can be found around the lodge, river bank, and coast. This area is also part of the Cape Floral Kingdom with hundreds of varieties of fynbos and renosterveld.
We have dinghies and canoes, easy walks, bird watching, fishing, guided fishing and cruises on the river. The river is also used by kite surfers.

Could not have found a better place for 5 friends to spend New Year. Food and friendliness superb.
Rustic in the best sense of the word.
Be prepared for many kilometers of dirt road. Parking is far from rooms and you carry your luggage quite a distance. Food is very pleasant. Rooms are slightly tired.
Mudlark is an excellent option for a family that enjoys the outdoors and fishing. It is much quieter than the Malgas area further up the Breede River. Mudlark is at the end of a long but good dirt road (about 67 km), which also adds to the peacefulness. The stay included breakfast and dinner, which was really excellent. Freshly baked, healthy muffins were served alongside the traditional bacon and egg options and dinner was usually freshly caught fish delicately prepared and served with a variety of vegetables. Even our fussy kids ate their plates clean. Our room wasn't big, but it was nice and clean with a veranda that looked directly onto the river. We will definitely go back again if we get the chance.

This place is incredible. We are on a road trip and unfortunately only had 2 nights here. Hilary (a brilliant cook) was an unbelievable host, she made us feel like family. I would suggest asking about fishing, R200 per hour for the boat, tackle and bait as well as visiting Bent Head Bar (a quirky salvage yard-style bar with a small spaza shop and take-away joint). A further recommendation would be to stay at an absolute minimum of 2 nights, but if you really want to relax then stay longer and just take in the view. We are already planning to return.
We had such a nice stay. Location by the river is good, rooms were neat and clean. The owner was always available and helpful and the dinner and breakfast were 5-star quality.
Very nice hosts. Beautiful walks on the riverbank. Very good supper and breakfast. Nice bird viewings. And a cat .
Hilary (the owner/hostess) and her staff made us feel very welcome and looked after us well. Hilary is also a top chef and the breakfasts and dinners were delicious. I don't know if I necessarily want to sit at the table with other guests at every meal - that's one aspect that will probably bother me if there are many people, but that's a personal preference.
Very nice place to stay. Basic amenities. No coffee in the room only in dining room. Dining room and bar locked not long after dinner. Nothing to drink later in the evening, no drinking water in room. Nice area and surroundings, but really overpriced.
Friendly welcome, comfortable rooms, delicious meals. Tim and Hillary both good sources of information about the area. The variety of birds and bird sounds create a special atmosphere. Paradise for fishermen and also for guests who just want to relax and rest.
Stayed for two nights. Enjoyed the scenery on the drive along the river to the lodge. Beautiful setting to watch the sunset. Dinner and breakfast the next day was delicious. In the morning, we enjoyed watching all the birds at the feeders. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. We enjoyed our stay at the lodge!
Rijdend over de dirt road krijg je steeds meer naar het einde van de wereld te rijden. En dat klopt want Mudlark ligt heerlijk verstopt in de natuur, met een schitterend uitzicht op de Breede Rivier. Een heerlijk ontspannend verblijf.
Here you as a person come to a standstill with nature and find yourself again!
Mudlark is a beautiful lodge in paradise. We had an amazing stay. Great food, fantastic fishing, and amazing service.
