Mulberry Cottage is a self-catering cottage situated on the Grootplaats Farm 28 km from Murraysburg, and 64 km from Graaff-Reinet. Mulberry Cottage was originally a labourer’s cottage that was upgraded to a manager’s cottage, after which it was unused for 20 years before being renovated into a cosy comfortable and private cottage nestled beside the Buffels River. There is a huge mulberry tree growing behind the cottage, hence its name.

Grootplaats is a working farm consisting of merino sheep, angora goats and cattle. Experience the wide open spaces of the Karoo by wandering around the farm or visit the game camps where springbok, kudu and blesbok roam.

Mulberry Cottage is a private, fully furnished, north-facing cottage that can accommodate up to 4 guests. The cottage comprises 2 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, and a kitchen, dining and lounge area. Each bedroom contains 2 single beds. The bathroom contains a shower, a bath, a toilet, and a washbasin.

The kitchen is well-equipped with a gas stove, microwave, fridge/freezer, kettle and a toaster. A unique low light ambience can be created at night, with the option of lighting paraffin lamps. The dining area contains a round 4-seater dining table and chairs. For chilly winter nights, the lounge has a cosy fireplace, giving all the warmth you may need. Outside, there is a paved, open patio area with a braai area on the one side. There is a grape vine creeping its way to cover most of the patio area for extra shade.

There is a swimming pool right next to the main homestead, which is an 8 minute slow walk away, should you want to cool off in the very hot summer days. Some guests even swim in the river, and there is a beautiful waterfall just upstream from the cottages.

Guests can go for walks, cycle with their own mountain bikes, drive a 4x4 track, and explore the farm. The star-studded skies are something to see, because when the nights are clear, it is simply spectacular. Your hosts, John and Judi Butterworth, consider it a great honour to be able to share the beauty of the Karoo with their guests.
