We had a wonderful stay. Well rested and ready for the rest of the year's hard work. The weekend feels like we rested for a week! We slept a lot and walked a lot. We have no complaints!
Beautiful place! Very well located; close enough to Bredasdorp, for groceries, and coastal towns like L'Agulhas for a quick visit. The cottage is well appointed, with everything you could need - including a nice big fridge/freezer. Canoes were a nice plus! Would definitely recommend this place.
We had such an amazing stay at Old Sam's Cottage. We enjoyed the peacefulness, watching the animals, especially the zebra who strolled in front of the house so peacefully. The cottage was so neat, and it takes you back to the olden days as there is no electricity and everything works with gas. Till this day, we are longing back to our stay at Old Sam's Cottage. I would definitely recommend Old Sam's Cottage if you want a break from the fast life in the city.
The weekend was memorable for several reasons. The house was so beautiful and nicely furnished, thank you very much! We felt so at home and took in and appreciated the beautiful surroundings. It was also the weekend of 25 September 2023 floods in the Western Cape. Where we could not see the river on arrival, we woke up on Monday morning 25 September to a river coming down with tremendous speed and pushing into the game camp. All way to get to us was with a tractor. All contact was via WA. Cecilia and Boeta looked after us so well, even sending us food with the tractor. This was next level hospitality. The customer service stars above are not enough, would give them a 10 out of 5. We will never forget it and we will return again for sure.
We enjoyed our time at Old Sam's Cottage. The host was available when required, and the setting was quiet and peaceful. Perfect rustic cottage with all the basics required.

The cottage exceeded our expectations. We were lucky enough to have one of the zebras grazing by the cottage for most of the weekend! We will definitely be back and would recommend Old Sam's Cottage to others.
Old Sam's Cottage is the ideal option for anyone looking to get away from the hustle and bustle. The cottage is beautifully and comfortably furnished for a short or longer stay. The view from the stoep and braai area is lovely, and great for hanging out until late at night. We walked long distances on the farm roads with the most beautiful views, and also went to cool off with the canoe by the river. Although the cottage has no electricity, it was well appointed with gas and cordless lights. Close to town and attractions, if one wants to go shopping or explore the area. The hostess, Cecilia, was available throughout and made an effort to make us feel at home.
Thank you very much for a lovely 3 nights - big surprise that there is now a gas geyser and no longer needed to make fire with donkey. We really enjoyed it and can recommend it anytime.
Absolutely amazing getaway. No signal, no electricity, no disturbances, the real way to unwind, relax and bond with your loved one. Was an honour to stay at a legend's cottage, the picture of Old Sam with a beaming smile is the perfect welcome and had me saying for 4 nights straight. "Dankie Oom Sam. jou legend!" The owners and staff are lovely people, real genuine hospitality shown by their eagerness to help when I left the car keys in the ignition and ran down the battery. This place is will see my wife and me again in future.

The stay was pleasant. The WiFi could be better, but the idea of being off the grid to relax was well achieved. There were games to play, stars to watch, and wildlife to see. There was a lot of braai to enjoy. It was possible to buy wood, but only cash was accepted.
Rest, beautiful views, beautiful nature. It's great to work for a few days without power and with a donkey. So you should not count on strong WiFi reception. Very warm and hospitable reception.
A break from the city noise. Where you wake up to birdsong and fresh air. A starry sky that leaves you gasping for breath. Crisp linen and tidy accommodation. Soft candlelight makes the evenings calm. If you want to switch off from everything and everyone this is the place to be.

We really enjoyed boiling our water again with a donkey. It is a very peaceful environment and we enjoyed and appreciated the tranquility.
Got extra lights. Also got flowers to say welcome. Hostess very friendly - makes you feel very at home. There one really rests the body and soul. Enjoy the donkey - really makes you feel like you are away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Lots to see in the area. We were through to De Hoop and saw a lot of wildlife, on top of the moose, zebras and springboks we saw at Old Sam's. The WiFi was easy to "log in" all the time on Friday, but struggled on Saturday - I still give it a 5 as it wasn't a necessity for us, it was just an extra - so this saw no need to mention for the Cecilia. Everything was very nice! On the contrary, we went for a total getaway. Will go again.
Perfect to just get quiet and enjoy nature. Perfect for romantic candlelight evenings on the porch by the fire. If you like to take pictures, in my case with my cell phone, take enough power banks with you as there is no power.

This "off-grid" cottage is quiet, tidy and private. The bedroom is very comfortable, with nice views. The owner provides plenty of wood for the donkey and the braai. There are nice excursions in the area and we saw many birds. The kitchen has everything we needed. We look forward to visiting again!

The place is clean, everything is there that one needs. And it's the perfect place for if you're looking for a peaceful getaway from busy society. This is the place to clear your head. I must say that there was even enough wood for the barbecue and for the donkey. Would definitely recommend it and you will definitely see me and my spouse check in there again. The people are very friendly there and also came to see if we were okay. Everything is great.

The location is close enough to the town for necessities, but far enough to forget about the hustle and bustle of the city. The mountain bike circular route was also a feast. I can definitely recommend this cottage and can't wait to visit again.
2 night stay. 1st night the hot water donkey and the braai chimney cowl were not functional, when I reported it the following day the owners repaired it immediately - excellent service.

It's a cozy little cottage on a quiet farm. Birds and sheep were our alarm in the morning, just in time for us to catch the sunrise and see the mist disappear over the farm. It's beautiful and everyone is friendly.

It was a weekend I would definitely want to have over any time, seeing wildlife, canoeing and thoroughly enjoying a beautiful farm and going for walks too. Also experienced for the first time how a lightning bolt strikes a power pole, as well as where lightning strikes and splits in 2. Plekkie is really very beautiful and quiet which makes me sleep soundly in the evenings, as well as we spent 2 evenings sitting and talking on the stoep and where we were also a little spoiled with night stars.

The goat makieries at Old Sam gave us joy in the morning with their singing. The surroundings are picturesque. Even heating the donkey was no trouble - water quickly warmed up.
The house is clean, tidy and equipped with everything you need. The view from the porch, as well as the birdlife was amazing. We had a lot of fun rowing in the river and running over the bumps on the farm, our 2 scottie children enjoyed it just as much. The peace and quiet of the area was a bonus!
Gasteplaas creates a very peaceful atmosphere. Close to De Hoop nature reserve, Arniston and L'Aghulas. Bredasdorp is 15 minutes away for all shopping and refreshments.

Old Sam's Cottage offers excellent value for money is idyllically located on a farm with tranquility and unspoilt views, the unit is clean and well furnished. Management is very helpful and friendly and I would very much like to spend more time here. Can wholeheartedly recommend the accommodation.

We had a very calm and peaceful time. The environment was lovely to relax in and we the accommodation was more than what we bargained for. We really enjoyed our stay at Old Sam's cottage.
We were pleasantly surprised with how nice we stayed in this small but well equipped cottage. It was cold and rainy when we were there, but the bedding was lovely. There is a gas heater that we didn't even need to use. Be prepared for there being no cell phone reception at times, although there is free Wi-Fi. For half of the 3 days we were basically without signal. The donkey warms the water, you just have to be patient - can take up to 3 hours. So, if you love all the city facilities of electricity, this might not work for you, but for us it was great. Must be great if you can swim and row in the river in summer.
Will not recommend any other place in the Overberg for 2 people. The owners are friendly and helpful.

This is the most perfect place for peace and rest. Beautifully furnished.
The cottage is perfect for anyone who wants to relax. We were there on a cool weekend but would love to go again for longer so we could use the canoes. The house was nice, but we were left a bit in the dark. There were no directions or explanation of the gas stove and donkey (to heat shower water). And a shortage of candles and a warm blanket. There was also no tea or milk just an empty milk container. I did not get feedback on any emails prior to our booking. Fortunately, the tranquility, beautiful surroundings, neat house and nice bedding make up for the shortcomings. Will definitely go again!
We enjoyed our weekend at Old Sam's Cottage but unfortunately this place will never see me again. The shower was one too many for me! Boiling the donkey is easy and it makes the water deliciously warm. In the bathroom, the story is quite different! There is no pressure in the faucet, so the water just drip-drip through the shower head - making it virtually impossible to shower properly. We took a tin bucket from the kitchen, filled it with water at the sink and then used it to rinse ourselves. The hot water is brown and it feels dirty - there is sediment (or something else, I don't know) in the water that is left behind on your skin and your hair. It's horrible! The shower's water didn't drain either, so after one person "showered" the bathroom floor was soaking wet. We also missed a hand towel in the bathroom. The description of the place mentions that there is an indoor braai (i.e. fireplace), but this is incorrect. There is only an outdoor braai - at least it is covered and sheltered from the wind. At least I can say that the place was nice and clean and all the kitchen accessories we needed were there. I suggest future visitors take their own flashlights and lighters as the ones provided are not enough.

Your breath is taken away by the beautiful nature and silence. Sam's Cottage is the perfect getaway. The wildlife (goats, zebras, birds) and the river with the canoes and barbecue were an extra treat. Ideal for people who like to barbecue, walk and be quiet. Definitely worth a visit!

Cecelia, it was very nice to visit you. We really enjoyed it and will definitely try to visit Sam's house again. The Wheat and Canola fields were so beautiful. Sheep, a whole lot of cranes and partridges on the fields were vivid. Cecelia was a very pleasant hostess.
We We enjoyed every moment, the tranquility, the eland and zebra grazing right up to the doorstep, the beautiful and artistic interior decoration of the rooms. And then finally, the nostalgia - the smell of oil lamps took me back to my childhood.

The cottage is very nicely equipped and for those in need of a getaway from the city, power and TV, this place is ideal. I think it can be very nice between the game. Just want to recommend that the route to Old Sam's Cottage as well as the directions need to be better and sent with confirmation of the booking. The distances on the confirmation note is completely incorrect. From the Bredasdorp side it's approximately 6 km after the tracks and 600 m before the Kars river. From the Swellendam side it's approximately 600 m after the Kars river. Turn into the gravel road at coordinates S34º29'28.6" E020º05'24.4". As soon as you've turned off you keep straight until you get to the double windmill's gate on the right hand side. At the gate there are two signs with Old Sam's Cottage on. Coordinates of Old Sam's Cottage is S34º29'42.0" E020º07'07.7".
